We investigate the ultradiscrete KdV equation with periodic boundary conditions where the two parameters (capacity of the boxes and that of the carrier) are arbitrary integers. We give a criterion to allow a periodic boundary condition when initial states take arbitrary integer values. Conserved quantities are constructed for the periodic systems. Construction of background solutions of the periodic ultradiscrete KdV equation from the Jacobi theta function is also presented.
We construct generalized solutions to the ultradiscrete KdV equation, including the so-called negative solition solutions. The method is based on the ultradiscretization of soliton solutions to the discrete KdV equation with gauge transformation. The conserved quantities of the ultradiscrete KdV equation are shown to be constructed in a similar way to those for the box-ball system.
We propose the functions defined by the maximum of a discrete quadratic form and satisfying the ultradiscrete KdV equation. These functions includes not only soliton solutions but also pseudo-periodic solutions. In the proof, we employ some facts of discrete convex analysis.
We solve the direct scattering problem for the ultradiscrete Korteweg de Vries (udKdV) equation, over $\mathbb R$ for any potential with compact (finite) support, by explicitly constructing bound state and non-bound state eigenfunctions. We then show how to reconstruct the potential in the scattering problem at any time, using an ultradiscrete analogue of a Darboux transformation. This is achieved by obtaining data uniquely characterising the soliton content and the `background' from the initial potential by Darboux transformation.
We propose an ultradiscrete analogue of the vertex operator in the case of the ultradiscrete KdV equation, which maps N-soliton solutions to N+1-soliton ones.
Ultradiscrete soliton equations and Bäcklund transformation for a generalized soliton solution are presented. The equations include the ultradiscrete KdV equation or the ultradiscrete Toda equation in a special case. We also express the solution by the ultradiscrete permanent, which is defined by ultradiscretizing the signature-free determinant, that is, the permanent. Moreover, we discuss a relation between Bäcklund transformations for discrete and ultradiscrete KdV equations.
Vertex models with quantum group symmetry give rise to integrable cellular automata at q=0. We study a prototype example known as the periodic box-ball system. The initial value problem is solved in terms of an ultradiscrete analogue of the Riemann theta function whose period matrix originates in the Bethe ansatz at q=0.
We propose new type of discrete and ultradiscrete soliton equations, which admit extended soliton solution called periodic phase soliton solution. The discrete equation is derived from the discrete DKP equation and the ultradiscrete one is obtained by applying the ultradiscrete limit. The soliton solutions have internal freedom and change their shape periodically during propagation. In particular, the ultradiscrete solution reduces into the solution to the ultradiscrete hungry Lotka-Volterra equation in a special case.
The U_q(\hat{sl}_2) vertex model at q=0 with periodic boundary condition is an integrable cellular automaton in one-dimension. By the combinatorial Bethe ansatz, the initial value problem is solved for arbitrary states in terms of an ultradiscrete analogue of the Riemann theta function with rational characteristics.
This is a review article on a tropical geometric realization of the ultradiscrete periodic Toda lattice (UD-pTL). Time evolution of the UD-pTL is translated into an addition on the Picard group of its spectral curve, which is a tropical hyperelliptic curve of arbitrary genus depending on the system size. The addition on the Picard group can be realized by using intersection of several tropical plane curves, one of which is the spectral curve. In addition, the tropical eigenvector map, which maps a point in the phase space of the UD-pTL into a set of points on the spectral curve, can also be re…
In this paper, we study periodic wave solutions of coupled KdV-type equations. We present a numerical process to calculate the $N$-periodic waves based on the direct method of calculating periodic wave solutions proposed by Akira Nakamura. Particularly, in the case of $N=1,2,3$, we give some detailed examples to show the N-periodic wave solutions to a coupled Ramani equation.
The tropical (ultradiscrete) periodic Toda lattice is a dynamical system derived from a time-discretized version of the periodic Toda lattice through a limiting procedure called tropicalization. We propose a new formulation for this dynamical system with a representation by two-colored strips. Based on this formulation, a family of its commuting time evolutions is constructed.
We study the singularities of a modified lattice Korteweg-deVries (KdV) equation and show that it admits three families of singularities, with analogous properties to those found in the lattice KdV equation. The first family consists of localised singularities which can occupy an arbitrarily large domain but which are, nevertheless, always confined. The second family consists of one or more lines extending all the way from the south-west to the north-east on the plane, involving a single finite value that depends on the parameter that appears in the equation. We argue that the infinite extent …
A complete algorithm is developed to deduce quasi-periodic solutions for the negative-order KdV (nKdV) hierarchy by using the backward Neumann systems. From the nonlinearization of Lax pair, the nKdV hierarchy is reduced to a family of backward Neumann systems via separating temporal and spatial variables. The backward Neumann systems are shown to be integrable in the Liouville sense, whose involutive solutions yield the finite parametric solutions of nKdV hierarchy. The negative-order Novikov equation is given, which specifies a finite-dimensional invariant subspace of nKdV flows. By the Abel…
This paper presents two new Weierstrass elliptic function solutions of the projective Riccati equations and four conversion formulas for converting the Weierstrass elliptic functions to the hyperbolic and trigonometric functions. The Weierstrass elliptic function solutions to the projective Riccati equations and the conversion formulas are used to propose the called Weierstrass type projective Riccati equation expansion method. The Weierstrass elliptic function solutions, the solitary wave and the periodic wave solutions of the KdV equation are constructed by using the proposed method. The sol…
We give a detailed study of the traveling wave solutions of $(\ell=2)$ Kaup-Boussinesq type of coupled KdV equations. Depending upon the zeros of a fourth degree polynomial, we have cases where there exist no nontrivial real solutions, cases where asymptotically decaying to a constant solitary wave solutions, and cases where there are periodic solutions. All such possible solutions are given explicitly in the form of Jacobi elliptic functions. Graphs of some exact solutions in solitary wave and periodic shapes are exhibited. Extension of our study to the cases $\ell=3$ and $\ell=4$ are also me…
We characterize the spectrum of one-dimensional Schrödinger operators H=-d^2/dx^2+V with quasi-periodic complex-valued algebro-geometric potentials V (i.e., potentials V which satisfy one (and hence infinitely many) equation(s) of the stationary Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) hierarchy) associated with nonsingular hyperelliptic curves. The corresponding problem appears to have been open since the mid-seventies. The spectrum of H coincides with the conditional stability set of H and can explicitly be described in terms of the mean value of the inverse of the diagonal Green's function of H. As a result…
We reformulate the Kerov-Kirillov-Reshetikhin (KKR) map in the combinatorial Bethe ansatz from paths to rigged configurations by introducing local energy distribution in crystal base theory. Combined with an earlier result on the inverse map, it completes the crystal interpretation of the KKR bijection for U_q(\hat{sl}_2). As an application, we solve an integrable cellular automaton, a higher spin generalization of the periodic box-ball system, by an inverse scattering method and obtain the solution of the initial value problem in terms of the ultradiscrete Riemann theta function.
It is revealed that there exist duality families of the KdV type equation. A duality family consists of an infinite number of generalized KdV (GKdV) equations. A duality transformation relates the GKdV equations in a duality family. Once a family member is solved, the duality transformation presents the solutions of all other family members. We show some dualities as examples, such as the soliton solution-soliton solution duality and the periodic solution-soliton solution duality.
Periodic waves of the modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equation are identified in the context of a new variational problem with two constraints. The advantage of this variational problem is that its non-degenerate local minimizers are stable in the time evolution of the mKdV equation, whereas the saddle points are unstable. We explore the analytical representation of periodic waves given by Jacobi elliptic functions and compute numerically critical points of the constrained variational problem. A broken pitchfork bifurcation of three smooth solution families is found. Two families represent (…
We address the most general periodic travelling wave of the modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equation written as a rational function of Jacobian elliptic functions. By applying an algebraic method which relates the periodic travelling waves and the squared periodic eigenfunctions of the Lax operators, we characterize explicitly the location of eigenvalues in the periodic spectral problem away from the imaginary axis. We show that Darboux transformations with the periodic eigenfunctions remain in the class of the same periodic travelling waves of the mKdV equation. In a general setting, there …
The dressing chain is derived by applying Darboux transformations to the spectral problem of the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation. It is also an auto-Bäcklund transformation for the modified KdV equation. We show that by applying Darboux transformations to the spectral problem of the dressing chain one obtains the lattice KdV equation as the dressing chain of the dressing chain and, that the lattice KdV equation also arises as an auto-Bäcklund transformation for a modified dressing chain. In analogy to the results obtained for the dressing chain (Veselov and Shabat proved complete integrabilit…
In this paper, the complex version KdV equation is discussed. The corresponding coupled equations is a integrable system in the sense of the bi-Hamiltonian structure, so the complex version KdV equation is integrable. A new spectral form is given, the periodic solution of the complex version KdV equation is obtained. It is showed that the periodic solution is the classical solution.
We present the discovery of a class of exact spatially localized as well as periodic wave solutions within the framework of the modified Korteweg-de Vries equation. This class comprises breather and interacting soliton solutions as well as interacting periodic wave solutions. The functional forms of these solutions include a joint parameter which can take both positive and negative values of unity. It is found that the existence of those closed form solutions depend strongly on whether the cubic nonlinearity parameter should be considered positive or negative. The derived wave structures show …
We prove the local well-posedness for the Cauchy problem of the Korteweg-de Vries equation in a quasi periodic function space. The function space contains functions such that f=f_1+f_2+...+f_N where f_j is in the Sobolev space of order s>-1/2N of a_j periodic functions. Note that f is not a periodic function when the ratio of periods a_i/a_j is irrational. The main tool of the proof is the Fourier restriction norm method introduced by Bourgain. We also prove an ill-posedness result in the sense that the flow map (if it exists) is not C^2, which is related to the Diophantine problem.
We study a chain of infinitely many particles coupled by nonlinear springs, obeying the equations of motion [\ddot{q}_n = V'(q_{n+1}-q_n) - V'(q_n-q_{n-1})] with generic nearest-neighbour potential $V$. We show that this chain carries exact spatially periodic travelling waves whose profile is asymptotic, in a small-amlitude long-wave regime, to the KdV cnoidal waves. The discrete waves have three interesting features: (1) being exact travelling waves they keep their shape for infinite time, rather than just up to a timescale of order wavelength$^{-3}$ suggested by formal asymptotic analysis, (…
The celebrated (1+1)-dimensional Korteweg de-Vries (KdV) equation and its (2+1)-dimensional extention, the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) equation, are two of the most important models in physical science. The KP hierarchy is explicitly written out by means of the linearized operator of the KP equation. A novel (2+1)-dimensional KdV extension, the cKP3-4 equation, is obtained by combining the third member (KP3, the usual KP equation) and the fourth member (KP4) of the KP hierarchy. The integrability of the cKP3-4 equation is guaranteed by the existence of the Lax pair and dual Lax pair. The cKP3-…
In this paper, we report an interesting integrable equation that has both solitons and kink solutions. The integrable equation we study is $(\frac{-u_{xx}}{u})_{t}=2uu_{x}$, which actually comes from the negative KdV hierarchy and could be transformed to the Camassa-Holm equation through a gauge transform. The Lax pair of the equation is derived to guarantee its integrability, and furthermore the equation is shown to have classical solitons, periodic soliton and kink solutions.
A nonlocal form of a two-layer fluid system is proposed by a simple symmetry reduction, then by applying multiple scale method to it a general nonlocal two place variable coefficient modified KdV (VCmKdV) equation with shifted space and delayed time reversal is derived. Various exact solutions of the VCmKdV equation, including elliptic periodic waves, solitary waves and interaction solutions between solitons and periodic waves are obtained and analyzed graphically. As an illustration, an approximate solution of the original nonlocal two-layer fluid system is also given.
The paper presents two results. First it is shown how the discrete potential modified KdV equation and its Lax pairs in matrix form arise from the Hirota-Miwa equation by a 2-periodic reduction. Then Darboux transformations and binary Darboux transformations are derived for the discrete potential modified KdV equation and it is shown how these may be used to construct exact solutions.
The work presented here emanates from questions arising from experimental observations of the propagation of surface water waves. The experiments in question featured a periodically moving wavemaker located at one end of a flume that generated unidirectional waves of relatively small amplitude and long wavelength when compared with the undisturbed depth. It was observed that the wave profile at any point down the channel very quickly became periodic in time with the same period as that of the wavemaker. One of the questions dealt with here is whether or not such a property holds for model equa…
In this paper, based on the regular KdV system, we study negative order KdV (NKdV) equations about their Hamiltonian structures, Lax pairs, infinitely many conservation laws, and explicit multi-soliton and multi-kink wave solutions thorough bilinear Bäcklund transformations. The NKdV equations studied in our paper are differential and actually derived from the first member in the negative order KdV hierarchy. The NKdV equations are not only gauge-equivalent to the Camassa-Holm equation through some hodograph transformations, but also closely related to the Ermakov-Pinney systems, and the Kuper…
We identify a periodic reduction of the non-autonomous lattice potential Korteweg-de Vries equation with the additive discrete Painlevé equation with $E^{(1)}_6$ symmetry. We present a description of a set of symmetries of the reduced equations and their relations to the symmetries of the discrete Painlevé equation. Finally, we exploit the simple symmetric form of the reduced equations to find rational and hypergeometric solutions of this discrete Painlevé equation.
Even though the KdV and modified KdV equations are nonlinear, we show that suitable linear combinations of known periodic solutions involving Jacobi elliptic functions yield a large class of additional solutions. This procedure works by virtue of some remarkable new identities satisfied by the elliptic functions.

We study the relation between the centro-affine geometry of star-shaped planar curves and the projective geometry of parametrized maps into $\RP^1$. We show that projectivization induces a map between differential invariants and a bi-Poisson map between Hamiltonian structures. We also show that a Hamiltonian evolution equation for closed star-shaped planar curves, discovered by Pinkall, has the Schwarzian KdV equation as its projectivization. (For both flows, the curvature evolves by the KdV equation.) Using algebro-geometric methods and the relation of group-based moving frames to AKNS-type r…
We formulate the inverse spectral theory of infinite gap Hill's operators with bounded periodic potential as a Riemann--Hilbert problem on a typically infinite collection of spectral bands and gaps. We establish a uniqueness theorem for this Riemann--Hilbert problem, which provides a new route to establishing unique determination of periodic potentials from spectral data. As the potential evolves according to the KdV equation, we use integrability to derive an associated Riemann--Hilbert problem with explicit time dependence. Basic principles from the theory of Riemann--Hilbert problems yield …
This paper aims to find new explicit solutions including multi-soliton, multi-positon, multi-negaton, and multi-periodic for a coupled Volterra lattice system which is an integrable discrete version of the coupled KdV equation. The dynamical properties of these new solutions are discussed in detail.
We consider the KdV equation on a circle and its Lie-Poisson reconstruction, which is reminiscent of an equation of motion for fluid particles. For periodic waves, the stroboscopic reconstructed motion is governed by an iterated map whose Poincaré rotation number yields the drift velocity. We show that this number has a geometric origin: it is the sum of a dynamical phase, a Berry phase, and an "anomalous phase". The last two quantities are universal: they are solely due to the underlying Virasoro group structure. The Berry phase, in particular, was previously described in [arXiv:1703.06142] f…
The KdV equation can be derived in the shallow water limit of the Euler equations. Over the last few decades, this equation has been extended to include higher order effects. Although this equation has only one conservation law, exact periodic and solitonic solutions exist. Khare and Saxena \cite{KhSa,KhSa14,KhSa15} demonstrated the possibility of generating new exact solutions by combining known ones for several fundamental equations (e.g., Korteweg - de Vries, Nonlinear Schrödinger). Here we find that this construction can be repeated for higher order, non-integrable extensions of these equa…
Ideal gas dynamics can develop shock-like singularities with discontinuous density. Viscosity typically regularizes such singularities and leads to a shock structure. On the other hand, in 1d, singularities in the Hopf equation can be non-dissipatively smoothed via KdV dispersion. Here, we develop a minimal conservative regularization of 3d ideal adiabatic flow of a gas with polytropic exponent $γ$. It is achieved by augmenting the Hamiltonian by a capillarity energy $β(ρ) (\nabla ρ)^2$. The simplest capillarity coefficient leading to local conservation laws for mass, momentum, energy and entr…
We devise a lucid and straightforward way for explicitly constructing quasi-periodic wave solutions (also called multi-periodic wave solutions) of supersymmetric equations in superspace $\mathbb{R}_Λ^{2,1}$ over two-dimensional Grassmann algebra $G_1(σ)$. Once a nonlinear equation is written in a bilinear form, its quasi-periodic wave solutions can be directly obtained by using a formula. Moreover, properties of these solutions are investigated in detail by analyzing their structures, plots and asymptotic behaviors. The relations between the quasi-periodic wave solutions and soliton solutions …
The nanopteron, which is a permanent but weakly nonlocal soliton, has been an interesting topic in numerical study for many decades. However, analytical solution of such a special soliton is rarely considered. In this Letter, we study the explicit nanopteron solution of the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation. Starting from the soliton-cnoidal wave solution of the KdV equation, the nanopteron structure is shown to exist. It is found that for the suitable choice of the wave parameters, the soliton core of the soliton-cnoidal wave trends to be a classical soliton of the KdV equation and the surroun…
We give a systematic classification and a detailed discussion of the structure, motion and scattering of the recently discovered negaton and positon solutions of the Korteweg-de Vries equation. There are two distinct types of negaton solutions which we label $[S^{n}]$ and $[C^{n}]$, where $(n+1)$ is the order of the Wronskian used in the derivation. For negatons, the number of singularities and zeros is finite and they show very interesting time dependence. The general motion is in the positive $x$ direction, except for certain negatons which exhibit one oscillation around the origin. In contr…
Based on a Riemann theta function and Hirota's bilinear form, a lucid and straightforward way is presented to explicitly construct double periodic wave solutions for both nonlinear differential and difference equations. Once such a equation is written in a bilinear form, its periodic wave solutions can be directly obtained by using an unified theta function formula. The relations between the periodic wave solutions and soliton solutions are rigorously established. The efficiency of our proposed method can be demonstrated on a class variety of nonlinear equations such as those considered in thi…
