Based on a Riemann theta function and Hirota's bilinear form, a lucid and straightforward way is presented to explicitly construct double periodic wave solutions for both nonlinear differential and difference equations. Once such a equation is written in a bilinear form, its periodic wave solutions can be directly obtained by using an unified theta function formula. The relations between the periodic wave solutions and soliton solutions are rigorously established. The efficiency of our proposed method can be demonstrated on a class variety of nonlinear equations such as those considered in this paper, shall water wave equation, (2+1)-dimensional Bogoyavlenskii-Schiff equation and differential-difference KdV equation.
The Riemann theta function is a complex-valued function of g complex variables. It appears in the construction of many (quasi-) periodic solutions of various equations of mathematical physics. In this paper, algorithms for its computation are given. First, a formula is derived allowing the pointwise approximation of Riemann theta functions, with arbitrary, user-specified precision. This formula is used to construct a uniform approximation formula, again with arbitrary precision.
We collect some classical results related to analysis on the Riemann surfaces. The notes may serve as an introduction to the field: we suppose that the reader is familiar only with the basic facts from topology and complex analysis. the treatment is organized to give a background for further applications to non-linear differential equations.
Vertex models with quantum group symmetry give rise to integrable cellular automata at q=0. We study a prototype example known as the periodic box-ball system. The initial value problem is solved in terms of an ultradiscrete analogue of the Riemann theta function whose period matrix originates in the Bethe ansatz at q=0.
The U_q(\hat{sl}_2) vertex model at q=0 with periodic boundary condition is an integrable cellular automaton in one-dimension. By the combinatorial Bethe ansatz, the initial value problem is solved for arbitrary states in terms of an ultradiscrete analogue of the Riemann theta function with rational characteristics.
The goal of this paper is to propose a new way to generalize the Weierstrass sigma-function to higher genus Riemann surfaces. Our definition of the odd higher genus sigma-function is based on a generalization of the classical representation of the elliptic sigma-function via Jacobi theta-function. Namely, the odd higher genus sigma-function $σ_χ(u)$ (for $u\in \C^g$) is defined as a product of the theta-function with odd half-integer characteristic $β^χ$, associated with a spin line bundle $χ$, an exponent of a certain bilinear form, the determinant of a period matrix and a power of the produc…
A code for the numerical evaluation of hyperelliptic theta-functions is presented. Characteristic quantities of the underlying Riemann surface such as its periods are determined with the help of spectral methods. The code is optimized for solutions of the Ernst equation where the branch points of the Riemann surface are parameterized by the physical coordinates. An exploration of the whole parameter space of the solution is thus only possible with an efficient code. The use of spectral approximations allows for an efficient calculation of all quantities in the solution with high precision. The…
An important step in the efficient computation of multi-dimensional theta functions is the construction of appropriate symplectic transformations for a given Riemann matrix assuring a rapid convergence of the theta series. An algorithm is presented to approximately map the Riemann matrix to the Siegel fundamental domain. The shortest vector of the lattice generated by the Riemann matrix is identified exactly, and the algorithm ensures that its length is larger than $\sqrt{3}/2$. The approach is based on a previous algorithm by Deconinck et al. using the LLL algorithm for lattice reductions. He…
We study theta functions of a Riemann surface of genus g from the view point of tau function of a hierarchy of soliton equations. We study two kinds of series expansions. One is the Taylor expansion at any point of the theta divisor. We describe the initial term of the expansion by the Schur function corresponding to the partition determined by the gap sequence of a certain flat line bundle. The other is the expansion of the theta function and its certain derivatives in one of the variables on the Abel-Jacobi images of k points on a Riemann surface with k less than or equal to g. We determine …
This is the second in a series of papers on the numerical treatment of hyperelliptic theta-functions with spectral methods. A code for the numerical evaluation of solutions to the Ernst equation on hyperelliptic surfaces of genus 2 is extended to arbitrary genus and general position of the branch points. The use of spectral approximations allows for an efficient calculation of all characteristic quantities of the Riemann surface with high precision even in almost degenerate situations as in the solitonic limit where the branch points coincide pairwise. As an example we consider hyperelliptic s…
The existence of theta function solutions of genus two for the ILW equation is established. A numerical example is also presented. The method basically goes along with the Krichever's construction of theta function solutions for soliton equations, such as the KP equation. This idea leads us to a question whether a Riemann surface exists which allows a peculiar Abelian integral of the third kind. The answer is affirmative at least for genus-two curves.
The finite-genus solutions for the Hirota's bilinear difference equation are constructed using the Fay's identities for the theta-functions of compact Riemann surfaces.
We study an integrable vertex model with a periodic boundary condition associated with U_q(A_n^{(1)}) at the crystallizing point q=0. It is an (n+1)-state cellular automaton describing the factorized scattering of solitons. The dynamics originates in the commuting family of fusion transfer matrices and generalizes the ultradiscrete Toda/KP flow corresponding to the periodic box-ball system. Combining Bethe ansatz and crystal theory in quantum group, we develop an inverse scattering/spectral formalism and solve the initial value problem based on several conjectures. The action-angle variables a…
In this paper, we aim for the theta function representation of quasi-periodic solution and related crucial quantities for a two-component generalization of Burgers equation. Our tools include the theory of algebraic curve, the meromorphic function, Baker-Akhiezer functions, the Dubrovin-type equations for auxiliary divisor, with these tools, the explicit representa- tions for above quantities are obtained.
We consider the quantum Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov-Bernard equation for a face model with elliptic weights, the SOS model. We provide explicit solutions as theta functions. On the so-called combinatorial line, in which the model is equivalent to the three-colour model, these solutions are shown to be eigenvectors of the transfer matrix with periodic boundary conditions.
We formulate the inverse spectral theory of infinite gap Hill's operators with bounded periodic potential as a Riemann--Hilbert problem on a typically infinite collection of spectral bands and gaps. We establish a uniqueness theorem for this Riemann--Hilbert problem, which provides a new route to establishing unique determination of periodic potentials from spectral data. As the potential evolves according to the KdV equation, we use integrability to derive an associated Riemann--Hilbert problem with explicit time dependence. Basic principles from the theory of Riemann--Hilbert problems yield …
The zero divisor of the theta function of a compact Riemann surface $X$ of genus $g$ is the canonical theta divisor of Pic${}^{(g-1)}$ up to translation by the Riemann constant $Δ$ for a base point $P$ of $X$. The complement of the Weierstrass gaps at the base point $P$ given as a numerical semigroup plays an important role, which is called the Weierstrass semigroup. It is classically known that the Riemann constant $Δ$ is a half period $\frac{1}{2}Γ_τ$ for the Jacobi variety $\mathcal{J}(X)=\mathbb{C}^g/Γ_τ$ of $X$ if and only if the Weierstrass semigroup at $P$ is symmetric. In this article,…
We investigate correlation functions in a periodic box-ball system. For the two point functions of short distance, we give explicit formulae obtained by combinatorial methods. We give expressions for general N-point functions in terms of ultradiscrete theta functions.
The KP equation has a large family of quasiperiodic multiphase solutions. These solutions can be expressed in terms of Riemann-theta functions. In this paper, a finite-dimensional canonical Hamiltonian system depending on a finite number of parameters is given for the description of each such solution. The Hamiltonian systems are completely integrable in the sense of Liouville. In effect, this provides a solution of the initial-value problem for the theta-function solutions. Some consequences of this approach are discussed.
To the spectral curves of smooth periodic solutions of the $n$-wave equation the points with infinite energy are added. The resulting spaces are considered as generalized Riemann surfcae. In general the genus is equal to infinity, nethertheless these Riemann surfaces are similar to compact Riemann surfaces. After proving a Riemann Roch Theorem we can carry over most of the constructions of the finite gap potentials to all smooth periodic potentials. The symplectic form turns out to be closely related to Serre duality. Finally we prove that all non-linear PDE's, which belong to the focussing ca…
It is known that the moments of the maximum value of a one-dimensional conditional Brownian motion, the three-dimensional Bessel bridge with duration 1 started from the origin, are expressed using the Riemann zeta function. We consider a system of two Bessel bridges, in which noncolliding condition is imposed. We show that the moments of the maximum value is then expressed using the double Dirichlet series, or using the integrals of products of the Jacobi theta functions and its derivatives. Since the present system will be provided as a diffusion scaling limit of a version of vicious walker m…
