We define a C^1 distance between submanifolds of a riemannian manifold M and show that, if a compact submanifold N is not moved too much under the isometric action of a compact group G, there is a G-invariant submanifold C^1-close to N. The proof involves a procedure of averaging nearby submanifolds of riemannian manifolds in a symmetric way. The procedure combines averaging techniques of Cartan, Grove/Karcher, and de la Harpe/Karoubi with Whitney's idea of realizing submanifolds as zeros of sections of extended normal bundles.
We introduce a class of half lightlike submanifolds of almost contact B-metric manifolds and prove that such submanifolds are semi-Riemannian with respect to the associated B-metric. Object of investigations are also minimal of the considered submanifolds and a non-trivial example for them is given.
We give some fundamental properties of the induced structures on submanifolds immersed in almost product or locally product Riemannian manifolds. We study the induced structure by the composition of two isometric immersions on submanifolds in an almost product Riemannian manifold. We give an effective construction for some induced structures on submanifolds of codimension 1 or 2 in Euclidean space.
We introduce the notions of pointwise almost h-slant submanifolds and pointwise almost h-semi-slant submanifolds as a generalization of slant submanifolds, pointwise slant submanifolds, semi-slant submanifolds, and pointwise semi-slant submanifolds. We have characterizations and investigate the integrability of distributions, the conditions for such distributions to be totally geodesic foliations, the mean curvature vector fields on totally umbilic submanifolds, the properties of h-slant functions and h-semi-slant functions, the properties of non-trivial warped product proper pointwise h-semi-…
In this paper we describe the algebra of differential invariants for GL(n,C)-structures. This leads to classification of almost complex structures of general positions. The invariants are applied to the existence problem of higher-dimensional pseudoholomorphic submanifolds.
In this paper we study submanifolds of an almost complex manifold with Norden metric which are non-degenerate with respect to the one Norden metric and lightlike with respect to the other Norden metric on the manifold. Relations between the induced geometric objects of some of these submanifolds are given. Examples of the considered submanifolds are constructed.
In this paper we define and study the slant and semi-slant submanifolds of a Lorentzian almost paracontact manifold. Some necessary and sufficient conditions for a submanifold of a Lorentzian almost paracontact manifold to be slant are obtained. We give some examples for the slant and semi-slant submanifolds of a Lorentzian almost paracontact manifold. We also investigate the integrability conditions for the distributions involved in the definition of a semi-slant submanifold when the ambient manifold is a Lorentzian paracosymplectic and a Lorentzian para-Sasakian manifold, respectively.
Recently, B.-Y. Chen and O. J. Garay studied pointwise slant submanifolds of almost Hermitian manifolds. By using the notion of pointwise slant submanifolds, we investigate the geometry of pointwise semi-slant submanifolds and their warped products in Sasakian and cosymplectic manifolds. We prove that there exist no proper pointwise semi-slant warped product submanifold other than contact CR-warped products in Sasakian manifolds. We give non-trivial examples of such submanifolds in cosypmlectic manifolds and obtain several fundamental results, including a characterization for warped product po…
The present paper is a continuation of our previous work, where a class of half lightlike submanifolds of almost contact B-metric manifolds was introduced. We study curvature properties of totally and screen totally umbilical such submanifolds as well as of the corresponding semi-Riemannian submanifolds with respect to the associated B-metric.
In the present paper, we introduce screen almost semi-invariant (SASI) lightlike submanifolds of indefinite Keahler manifolds. We obtain the neccesary and sufficient condition for the induced connection to be a metric connection on SASI-lightlike submanifolds and construct an example for this manifold. Also we find some conditions for integrability of distributions and investigate certain characterizations.
In this paper, we present the invalidities of the results in [3], because of their definition of a semi-invariant submanifold of an almost complex contact metric manifold is not true .
In this paper we present not only some properties related to bi-warped product submanifolds of locally conformal almost cosymplectic manifolds, but also we show how the squared norm of the second fundamental form and the bi-warped product's warping functions are related when the bi-warped product submanifold has a proper slant submanifold as a base or fiber.
In this paper we generalize examples of Hamiltonian stationary Lagrangian submanifolds constructed by Lee and Wang in $\mathbb{C}^m$ to toric almost Calabi-Yau manifolds. We construct examples of weighted Hamiltonian stationary Lagrangian submanifolds in toric almost Calabi-Yau manifolds and solutions of generalized Lagrangian mean curvature flows starting from these examples. We allow these flows to have some singularities and topological changes.
In this paper we study submanifolds of almost contact manifolds with Norden metric of codimension two with totally real normal spaces. Examples of such submanifolds as a Lie subgroups are constructed.
As a generalization of slant submanifolds and semi-slant submanifolds, we introduce the notions of pointwise slant submanifolds and pointwise semi-slant sunmanifolds of an almost contact metric manifold. We obtain a characterization at each notion, investigate the topological properties of pointwise slant submanifolds, and give some examples of them. We also consider some distributions on cosymplectic, Sasakian, Kenmotsu manifolds and deal with some properties of warped product pointwise semi-slant submanifolds. Finally, we give some inequalities for the squared norm of the second fundamental …
We introduce higher order mean curvatures of screen almost conformal (SAC) half-lightlike submanifolds of indefinite contact manifolds, admitting a semi-symmetric non-metric connection, and use them to generalize some known results of [6]. Also, we derive a new set of integration formulae via the divergence of some special vector fields tangent to this submanifold. Several examples are also included to illustrate the main concepts.
This paper has two goals; the first is to generalize results for the existence and nonexistence of warped product submanifolds of almost contact manifolds, accordingly a self-contained reference of such submanifolds is offered to save efforts of potential research. Most of the results of this paper are general and decisive enough to generalize both discovered and not discovered results. Moreover, a discrete example of contact CR-warped product submanifold in Kenmotsu manifold is constructed. For further research direction, we addressed a couple of open problems arose from the results of this p…
In a previous paper, the authors together with L. Vrancken initiated the study of $3$-dimensional CR submanifolds of the nearly K\" ahler homogeneous $\mathbb S^3\times \mathbb S^3$. As is shown by Butruille this is one of only four homogeneous $6$-dimensional nearly Kähler manifolds. Besides its almost complex structure $J$ it also admits a canonical almost product structure $P$. Along a $3$-dimensional CR submanifold the tangent space of $\mathbb S^3\times\mathbb S^3$ can be naturally split as the orthogonal sum of three $2$-dimensional vector bundles $\mathcal D_1$, $\mathcal D_2$ and $\mat…
We introduce a generalization of structured manifolds as the most general Riemannian metric g associated to an affinor (tensor field of (1,1)-type) F and initiate a study of their semi-invariant submanifolds. These submanifolds are generalization of CR-submanifolds of almost complex geometry and semi-invariant submanifolds of several interesting geometries (almost product, almost contact and others). We characterize the integrability of both invariant and anti-invariant distribution; the special case when F is covariant constant with respect to g gives major simplifications in computations.
In the current article our primary objects of study are compact complex submanifolds of quotient manifolds of irreducible bounded symmetric domains by torsion free discrete lattices of automorphisms. We are interested in the characterization of the totally geodesic submanifolds among compact splitting complex submanifolds, i.e. under the assumption that the tangent sequence splits holomorphically over the submanifold.
In an earlier paper we discussed soldered forms, multivector fields and Riemannian metrics. In particular, we showed that a Riemannian submanifold is totally geodesic iff the metric is soldered to the submanifold. In the present note we discuss general, soldered tensor fields. In particular, we prove that the almost complex structure of an almost Kähler manifold is soldered to a submanifold iff the latter is an invariant, totally geodesic submanifold.
We give a new method for manufacturing complete minimal submanifolds of compact Lie groups and their homogeneous quotient spaces. For this we make use of harmonic morphisms and basic representation theory of Lie groups. We then apply our method to construct many examples of compact minimal submanifolds of the special unitary groups.
We show that for any weakly reflective submanifold of a compact isotropy irreducible Riemannian homogeneous space its inverse image under the parallel transport map is an infinite dimensional weakly reflective PF submanifold of a Hilbert space. This is an extension of the author's previous result in the case of compact irreducible Riemannian symmetric spaces. We also give a characterization of so obtained weakly reflective PF submanifolds.
In this paper we study slant submanifolds of Lorentzian almost contact manifolds. We have taken the submanifold as a space like and then defined the slant angle on a submanifold and thus we extended the results of A. Lotta (Slant submanifolds in contact geometry [8]) and M. A. Khan et. al. (Slant submanifolds of Lorentzian Paracontact manifolds [7]) in this new setting.
Stable compact minimal submanifolds of the product of a sphere and any Riemannian manifold are classified whenever the dimension of the sphere is at least three. The complete classification of the stable compact minimal submanifolds of the product of two spheres is obtained. Also, it is proved that the only stable compact minimal surfaces of the product of a 2-sphere and any Riemann surface are the complex ones.
We use Donaldson's approximately holomorphic techniques to build embeddings of a closed symplectic manifold with symplectic form of integer class in the grassmannians Gr(r,N). We assure that these embeddings are asymptotically holomorphic in a precise sense. We study first the particular case of embeddings in the projective space $CP^N$ obtaining control on N. The main reason of our study is the construction of singular determinantal submanifolds as the intersection of the embedding with certain ``generalized Schur cycles'' defined on a product of grassmannians. It is shown that the symplectic…
We construct smooth families of compact special Lagrangian submanifolds embedded in some toric hyper-K\"ahler manifolds, which never become holomorphic Lagrangian submanifolds via any hyper-Kähler rotations. These families converge to special Lagrangian immersions with self-intersection points in the sense of current. To construct them, we apply the desingularization method developed by Joyce.
In this paper, we assume that all isoparametric submanifolds have flat section. The main purpose of this paper is to prove that, if a full irreducible complete isoparametric submanifold of codimension greater than one in a symmetric space of non-compact type admits a reflective focal submanifold and if it of real analytic, then it is a principal orbit of a Hermann type action on the symmetric space. A hyperpolar action on a symmetric space of non-compact type admits a reflective singular orbit if and only if it is a Hermann type action. Hence is not extra the assumption that the isoparametric …
In this paper, we prove that full irreducible curvature-adapted isoparametric submanifolds of codimension greater than one in a symmetric space of non-compact type are principal orbits of Hermann actions on the symmetric spaces under certain conditions.
We show that every area-minimizing hypercone and every oriented Lawlor cone in [Law91] can be realized as a tangent cone at a point of some homologically area-minimizing singular compact submanifold. In particular this generalizes the result of N. Smale [Sma99].
A classical result of Milman roughly states that every Lipschitz function on $\mathbb{S}^n$ is almost constant on a sufficiently high-dimensional sphere $\mathbb{S}^m\subset \mathbb{S}^n$. In this paper we extend the result by proving that any Lipschitz function on a positively curved homogeneous space is almost constant on a high dimensional submanifold.

It is known that principal orbits of Hermann actions on a symmetric space of non-compact type are curvature-adapted isoparametric submanifolds having no focal point of non-Euclidean type on the ideal boundary of the ambient symmetric space. In this paper, we investigate the mean curvature flows for such a curvature-adapted isoparametric submanifold and its focal submanifold. Concretely the investigation is performed by investigating the mean curvature flows for the lift of the submanifold to an infinite dimensional pseudo-Hilbert space through a pseudo-Riemannian submersion.
Let M be an 8-manifold with a Spin(7)-structure. We first show that closed Cayley submanifolds of M form a smooth moduli space for a generic Spin(7)-structure. Then we study the deformations of a compact, connected Cayley submanifold X of M with non-empty boundary contained in a given submanifold W of M such that X and W meet orthogonally. We show that they are rigid for a generic Spin(7)-structure. We further show that they are also rigid for a generic deformation of W.
The stability and the index of compact minimal submanifolds of the Berger spheres $\mathbb{S}^{2n+1}_τ,\, 0<τ\leq 1$, are studied. Unlike the case of the standard sphere ($τ=1$), where there are no stable compact minimal submanifolds, the Berger spheres have stable ones if and only if $τ^2\leq 1/2$. Moreover, there are no stable compact minimal $d$-dimensional submanifolds of $\mathbb{S}^{2n+1}_τ$ when $1 / (d+1) < τ^2 \leq 1$ and the stable ones are classified for $τ^2=1 / (d+1)$ when the submanifold is embedded. Finally, the compact orientable minimal surfaces of $\mathbb{S}^3_τ$ with index …
By means of a family of counter-examples, it is shown that the Reilly upper bound for the first eigenvalue of the Laplace operator for a compact submanifold in Euclidean space does not work for $n$-dimensional compact spacelike submanifolds of Lorentz-Minkowski spacetime $\mathbb{L}^m$, $m\geq n+2$. We develop a new suitable technique, based on an integral formula on compact spacelike sections of the light cone in $\mathbb{L}^m$. Then, a family of extrinsic upper bounds for the first eigenvalue of the Laplace operator for a compact spacelike submanifold in $\mathbb{L}^m$ is proved. For each on…
Warped product manifolds have been studied for a long period of time. In contrast, the study of warped product submanifolds from extrinsic point of view was initiated by the first author around the beginning of this century in [7, 8]. Since then the study of warped product submanifolds has been investigated by many geometers. The notion of slant submanifolds of almost Hermitian manifolds was introduced in [5]. Bi-slant submanifolds in almost contact metric manifolds were defined in [4] by J. L. Cabrerizo et al. In [26], we studied bi-slant submanifolds and warped product bi-slant submanifolds …
We give a necessary and sufficient condition for orbits of commutative Hermann actions and actions of the direct product of two symmetric subgroups on compact Lie groups to be biharmonic in terms of symmetric triad with multiplicities. By this criterion, we determine all the proper biharmonic submanifolds in irreducible symmetric spaces of compact type which are singular orbits of commutative Hermann actions of cohomogeneity two. Also, in compact simple Lie groups, we determine all the biharmonic hypersurfaces which are regular orbits of actions of the direct product of two symmetric subgroups…
We introduce the notion of Kähler manifolds that are almost Einstein and we define a generalized mean curvature vector field along submanifolds in them. We prove that Lagrangian submanifolds remain Lagrangian, when deformed in direction of the generalized mean curvature vector field. For a Kähler manifold that is almost Einstein, and which in addition has a trivial canonical bundle, we show that the generalized mean curvature vector field of a Lagrangian submanifold is the dual vector field associated to the Lagrangian angle.
We provide uniqueness results for compact minimal submanifolds in a large class of Riemannian manifolds of arbitrary dimension. In the case compact and Cartan-Hadamard manifolds we obtain general results for these submanifolds. Several applications to Geometric Analysis are also showed.
On a para-quaternionic Kähler manifold $(\widetilde M^{4n},Q,\widetilde g)$, which is first of all a pseudo-Riemannian manifold, a natural definition of (almost) Kähler and (almost) para-Kähler submanifold $(M^{2m},\mathcal{J},g)$ can be given where $\mathcal{J}=J_1|_M$ is a (para-)complex structure on $M$ which is the restriction of a section $J_1$ of the para-quaternionic bundle $Q$. In this paper, we extend to such a submanifold $M$ most of the results proved by Alekseevsky and Marchiafava, 2001, where Hermitian and Kähler submanifolds of a quaternionic Kähler manifold have been studied. Co…
In this paper, we prove a classification theorem for the stable compact minimal submanifolds of the Riemannian product of an $m_1$-dimensional ($m_1\geq3$) hypersurface $M_1$ in the Euclidean space and any Riemannian manifold $M_2$, when the sectional curvature $K_{M_1}$ of $M_1$ satisfies $\frac{1}{\sqrt{m_1-1}}\leq K_{M_1}\leq 1.$ This gives a generalization to the results of F. Torralbo and F. Urbano [9], where they obtained a classification theorem for the stable minimal submanifolds of the Riemannian product of a sphere and any Riemannian manifold. In particular, when the ambient space is…
Inspired by the concepts of slant distribution and slant submanifold, with their variants of hemi-slant, semi-slant, bi-slant, or almost bi-slant, we introduce the more general concepts of $k$-slant distribution and $k$-slant submanifold in the settings of an almost Hermitian, an almost product Riemannian, an almost contact metric, and an almost paracontact metric manifold and study some of their properties. We prove that, for any proper $k$-slant distribution in the tangent bundle of a Riemannian manifold, there exists another one in its orthogonal complement, and we establish basic relations…
We review some results concerning the deformations of calibrated minimal submanifolds which occur in Riemannian manifolds with special holonomy. The calibrated submanifolds are assumed compact with a non-empty boundary which is constrained to move in a particular fixed submanifold. The results extend McLean's deformation theory previously developed for closed compact submanifolds.
