We show that for any weakly reflective submanifold of a compact isotropy irreducible Riemannian homogeneous space its inverse image under the parallel transport map is an infinite dimensional weakly reflective PF submanifold of a Hilbert space. This is an extension of the author's previous result in the case of compact irreducible Riemannian symmetric spaces. We also give a characterization of so obtained weakly reflective PF submanifolds.
We introduce the notion of a weakly reflective submanifold, which is an austere submanifold with a certain global condition, and study its fundamental properties. Using these, we determine weakly reflective orbits and austere orbits of s-representations.
A weakly reflective submanifold is a minimal submanifold of a Riemannian manifold which has a certain symmetry at each point. In this paper we introduce this notion into a class of proper Fredholm (PF) submanifolds in Hilbert spaces and show that there exist so many infinite dimensional weakly reflective PF submanifolds in Hilbert spaces. In particular each fiber of the parallel transport map is shown to be weakly reflective. These imply that in infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces there exist so many homogeneous minimal submanifolds which are not totally geodesic, unlike in the finite dimensio…
In this paper, we assume that all isoparametric submanifolds have flat section. The main purpose of this paper is to prove that, if a full irreducible complete isoparametric submanifold of codimension greater than one in a symmetric space of non-compact type admits a reflective focal submanifold and if it of real analytic, then it is a principal orbit of a Hermann type action on the symmetric space. A hyperpolar action on a symmetric space of non-compact type admits a reflective singular orbit if and only if it is a Hermann type action. Hence is not extra the assumption that the isoparametric …
In this paper, we give a necessarly and sufficient condition for orbits of linear isotropy representations of Riemannian symmetric spaces are biharmonic submanifolds in hyperspheres in Euclidean spaces. In particular, we obtain examples of biharmonic submanifolds in hyperspheres whose co-dimension is greater than one.
Let U be a real form of a complex semisimple Lie group, and tau, sigma, a pair of commuting involutions on U. This data corresponds to a reflective submanifold of a symmetric space, U/K. We define an associated integrable system, and describe how to produce solutions from curved flats. The solutions are shown to correspond to various special submanifolds, depending on which homogeneous space U/L one projects to. We apply the construction to a question which generalizes, to the context of reflective submanifolds of arbitrary symmetric spaces, the problem of isometric immersions of space forms w…
Harvey-Lawson and Anciaux introduced the notion of austere submanifolds in pseudo-Riemannian geometry. We give an equivalent condition for an orbit of the isotropy representations for semisimple pseudo-Riemannian symmetric space to be an austere submanifold in a pseudo-sphere in terms of restricted root system theory with respect to Cartan subspaces. By using the condition we give examples of austere orbits.
First we investigate the evolutions of the radius function and its gradient along the volume-preserving mean curvature flow starting from a tube (of nonconstant radius) over a compact closed domain of a reflective submanifold in a symmetric space under certain condition for the radius function. Next, we prove that the tubeness is preserved along the flow in the case where the ambient space is a rank one symmetric space of non-compact type (other than a (real) hyperbolic space) and the reflective submanifold is an invariant submanifold and the radius function of the initial tube is radial. Furt…
The object of this article is to compute the holonomy group of the normal connection of complex parallel submanifolds of the complex projective space. We also give a new proof of the classification of complex parallel submanifolds by using a normal holonomy approach. Indeed, we explain how these submanifolds can be regarded as the unique complex orbits of the (projectivized) isotropy representation of an irreducible Hermitian symmetric space. Moreover, we show how these important submanifolds are related to other areas of mathematics and theoretical physics. Finally, we state a conjecture abou…
Let $M$ be a most singular orbit of the isotropy representation of a simple symmetric space. Let $(ν_i, Φ_i)$ be an irreducible factor of the normal holonomy representation $(ν_pM, Φ(p))$. We prove that there exists a basis of a section $Σ_i\subset ν_i$ of $Φ_i$ such that the corresponding shape operators have rational eigenvalues (this is not in general true for other isotropy orbits). Conversely, this property, if referred to some non-transitive irreducible normal holonomy factor, characterizes the isotropy orbits. We also prove that the definition of a submanifold with constant principal cu…
We prove a Berger type theorem for the normal holonomy group (i.e., the holonomy group of the normal connection) of a full complete complex submanifold of the complex projective space. Namely, if the normal holonomy does not act transitively, then the submanifold is the complex orbit, in the complex projective space, of the isotropy representation of an irreducible Hermitian symmetric space of rank greater or equal to 3. Moreover, we show that for complete irreducible complex submanifolds of the complex Euclidean space the normal holonomy is generic, i.e., it acts transitively on the unit sphe…
We construct the symplectic resolution of a symplectic orbifold whose isotropy locus consists of disjoint submanifolds with homogeneous isotropy, that is, all its points have the same isotropy groups.
After establishing the uniqueness of the continuation of local Cauchy data for harmonic maps between two Riemannian manifolds M and N, we prove (i) a reflection principle for a smooth minimal submanifold Y of a Riemannian manifold M that contains a reflective submanifold of M as a hypersurface and (ii) the reflection principle of for a class of smooth harmonic maps between Riemannian manifolds that admit reflective submanifolds. A reflection principle for harmonic functions on M with respect to a reflective hypersurface of M follows easily from the above reflection principle. To consider refle…
Riemannian geodesic orbit spaces (G/H,g) are natural generalizations of symmetric spaces, defined by the property that their geodesics are orbits of one-parameter subgroups of G. We study the geodesic orbit spaces of the form (G/S,g), where G is a compact, connected, semisimple Lie group and S is abelian. We give a simple geometric characterization of those spaces, namely that they are naturally reductive. In turn, this yields the classification of the invariant geodesic orbit (and also the naturally reductive) metrics on any space of the form G/S. Our approach involves simplifying the intrica…
Real flag manifolds are the isotropy orbits of noncompact symmetric spaces $G/K$. Any such manifold $M$ enjoys two very peculiar geometric properties: It carries a transitive action of the (noncompact) Lie group $G$, and it is embedded in euclidean space as a taut submanifold. The aim of the paper is to link these two properties by showing that the gradient flow of any height function is a one-parameter subgroup of $G$, where the gradient is defined with respect to a suitable homogeneous metric $s$ on $M$; this generalizes the Kaehler metric on adjoint orbits (the so-called complex flag manifo…
It was conjectured, twenty years ago, the following result that would generalize the so-called rank rigidity theorem for homogeneous Euclidean submanifolds: let M^n, n>=2, be a full and irreducible homogeneous submanifold of the sphere $S^{N-1}\subset R^N$ and such that the normal holonomy group is not transitive (on the unit sphere of the normal space to the sphere). Then M^n must be an orbit of an irreducible s-representation (i.e. the isotropy representation of a semisimple Riemannian symmetric space). If n=2, then the normal holonomy is always transitive, unless M is a homogeneous isoparam…
The paper is devoted to the study of geodesic orbit Riemannian spaces that could be characterize by the property that any geodesic is an orbit of a 1-parameter group of isometries. In particular, we discuss some important totally geodesic submanifolds that inherit the property to be geodesic orbit. For a given geodesic orbit Riemannian space, we describe the structure of the nilradical and the radical of the Lie algebra of the isometry group. In the final part, we discuss some new tools to study geodesic orbit Riemannian spaces, related to compact Lie group representations with non-trivial pri…
We give a Riemannian structure to the set $Σ$ of positive invertible unitized Hilbert-Schmidt operators, by means of the trace inner product. This metric makes of $Σ$ a nonpositively curved, simply connected and metrically complete Hilbert manifold. The manifold $Σ$ is a universal model for symmetric spaces of the noncompact type: any such space can be isometrically embedded into $Σ$. We give an intrinsic algebraic characterization of convex closed submanifolds $M$. We study the group of isometries of such submanifolds: we prove that $G_M$, the Banach-Lie group generated by $M$, acts isometric…
We discuss generalizations of the well-known theorem of Hilbert that there is no complete isometric immersion of the hyperbolic plane into Euclidean 3-space. We show that this problem is expressed very naturally as the question of the existence of certain homotheties of reflective submanifolds of a symmetric space. As such, we conclude that the only other (non-compact) cases to which this theorem could generalize are the problem of isometric immersions with flat normal bundle of the hyperbolic space $H^n$ into a Euclidean space $E^{n+k}$, $n \geq 2$, and the problem of Lagrangian isometric imm…
Given a compact Lie subgroup $G$ of the isometry group of a compact Riemannian manifold $M$ with a Riemannian connection $\nabla,$ it is introduced a $G-$symmetrization process of a vector field of $M$ and it is proved that the critical points of the energy functional \[ F(X):=\frac{\int_{M}\left\Vert \nabla X\right\Vert ^{2}dM}{\int_{M}\left\Vert X\right\Vert ^{2}dM}% \] on the space of $\ G-$invariant vector fields are critical points of $F$ on the space of all vector fields of $M,$ and that this inclusion may be strict in general. One proves that the infimum of $F$ on $\mathbb{S}^{3}$ is no…
