In the current article our primary objects of study are compact complex submanifolds of quotient manifolds of irreducible bounded symmetric domains by torsion free discrete lattices of automorphisms. We are interested in the characterization of the totally geodesic submanifolds among compact splitting complex submanifolds, i.e. under the assumption that the tangent sequence splits holomorphically over the submanifold.
In this paper, I prove a splitting theorem for equifocal submanifolds with non-flat section in a simply connected symmetric space of compact type. Also, by using the splitting theorem, I prove that the sections of equifocal submanifolds with non-flat section in an irreducible simply connected symmetric space of compact type are isometric to a sphere or a real projective space.
Let $(Z,ω)$ be a connected Kahler manifold with an holomorphic action of the complex reductive Lie group $U^{\mathbb C}$, where $U$ is a compact connected Lie group acting in a hamiltonian fashion. Let $G$ be a closed compatible Lie group of $U^{\mathbb C}$ and let $M$ be a $G$-invariant connected submanifold of $Z$. Let $x\in M$. If $G$ is a real form of $U^{\mathbb C}$, we investigate conditions such that $G\cdot x$ compact implies $U^{\mathbb C} \cdot x$ is compact as well. The vice-versa is also investigated. We also characterize $G$-invariant real submanifolds such that the norm square of…
We give a new method for manufacturing complete minimal submanifolds of compact Lie groups and their homogeneous quotient spaces. For this we make use of harmonic morphisms and basic representation theory of Lie groups. We then apply our method to construct many examples of compact minimal submanifolds of the special unitary groups.
We prove that, given a certain isometric action of a two-dimensional Abelian group A on a quaternionic Kähler manifold M which preserves a submanifold N\subset M, the quotient M'=N/A has a natural Kähler structure. We verify that the assumptions on the group action and on the submanifold N\subset M are satisfied for a large class of examples obtained from the supergravity c-map. In particular, we find that all quaternionic Kähler manifolds M in the image of the c-map admit an integrable complex structure compatible with the quaternionic structure, such that N\subset M is a complex submanifold.…
We study forgetful maps between Deligne-Mostow moduli spaces of weighted points on P^1, and classify the forgetful maps that extend to a map of orbifolds between the stable completions. The cases where this happens include the Livné fibrations and the Mostow/Toledo maps between complex hyperbolic surfaces. They also include a retraction of a 3-dimensional ball quotient onto one of its 1-dimensional totally geodesic complex submanifolds.
Iwasawa manifold is a compact complex homogeneous manifold isomorphic to a quotient of the group of complex unipotent $3 \times 3$ matrices by a cocompact lattice. We prove that any compact complex curve in an Iwasawa manifold is contained in a holomorphic torus. We also prove that any Kähler surface in an Iwasawa manifold is either an abelian surface or a non-projective isotrivial elliptic surface of Kodaira dimension one. In the Appendix we show that any complex torus in an Iwasawa manifold carries complex multiplication.
In this paper we provide an extension to the Jellett-Minkowski's formula for immersed submanifolds into ambient manifolds which possesses a pole and radial curvatures bounded from above or below by the radial sectional curvatures of a rotationally symmetric model space. Using this Jellett-Minkowski's generalized formula we can focus on several isoperimetric problems. More precisely, on lower bounds for isoperimetric quotients of any precompact domain with smooth boundary, or on the isoperimetric profile of the submanifold and its modified volume. In the particular case of a model space with st…
Let $M$ be a compact nonnegatively curved Riemannian manifold admitting an isometric action by a compact Lie group $\mathsf G$ in a way that the quotient space $M/\mathsf G$ has nonempty boundary. Let $π: M \to M/\mathsf G$ denote the quotient map and $B$ be any boundary stratum of $M/\mathsf G$. Via a specific soul construction for $M/ \mathsf G$ we construct a smooth closed submanifold $N$ of $M$ such that $M \setminus π^{-1}(B)$ is diffeomorphic to the normal bundle of $N$. As an application we show that a simply connected torus manifold admitting an invariant metric of nonnegative curvatur…
Inspired by work of Borzellino and Brunsden, we generalize the notion of a submanifold identifying a natural and sufficiently general condition which guarantees that a subset of an (effective) orbifold carries itself a canonical induced orbifold structure. We illustrate the strength of this approach generalizing typical constructions of submanifolds to the orbifold setting using embeddings, proper group actions and the idea of transversality.
We study locally conformally Berwald metrics on closed manifolds which are not globally conformally Berwald. We prove that the characterization of such metrics is equivalent to characterizing incomplete, simply-connected, Riemannian manifolds with reducible holonomy group whose quotient by a group of homotheties is closed. We further prove a de Rham type splitting theorem which states that if such a manifold is analytic, it is isometric to the Riemannian product of a Euclidean space and an incomplete manifold.
We prove an equidistribution result for totally geodesic submanifolds in a compact locally symmetric space. In the case of Hermitian locally symmetric spaces, this gives a convergence theorem for currents of integration along totally geodesic subvarieties. As a corollary, we obtain that on a complex surface which is a compact quotient of the bidisc or of the 2-ball, there is at most a finite number of totally geodesic curves with negative self intersection. More generally, we prove that there are only finitely many exceptional totally geodesic divisors in a compact Hermitian locally symmetric …
Let $(M,g)$ be a complete non-compact Riemannian manifold together with a function $e^h$, which weights the Hausdorff measures associated to the Riemannian metric. In this work we assume lower or upper radial bounds on some weighted or unweighted curvatures of $M$ to deduce comparisons for the weighted isoperimetric quotient and the weighted capacity of metric balls in $M$ centered at a point $o\in M$. As a consequence, we obtain parabolicity and hyperbolicity criteria for weighted manifolds generalizing previous ones. A basic tool in our study is the analysis of the weighted Laplacian of the …
We introduce the process of symplectic reduction along a submanifold as a uniform approach to taking quotients in symplectic geometry. This construction holds in the categories of smooth manifolds, complex analytic spaces, and complex algebraic varieties, and has an interpretation in terms of derived stacks in shifted symplectic geometry. It also encompasses Marsden--Weinstein--Meyer reduction, Mikami--Weinstein reduction, the pre-images of Poisson transversals under moment maps, symplectic cutting, symplectic implosion, and the Ginzburg--Kazhdan construction of Moore--Tachikawa varieties in T…
Let $X=G/K$ be a higher rank symmetric space of non-compact type, where $G$ is the connected component of the isometry group of $X$. We define the splitting rank of $X$, denoted by $\text{srk}(X)$, to be the maximal dimension of a totally geodesic submanifold $Y\subset X$ which splits off an isometric $\mathbb R$-factor. We compute explicitly the splitting rank for each irreducible symmetric space. For an arbitrary (not necessarily irreducible) symmetric space, we show that the comparison map $η:H^{*}_{c,b}(G,\mathbb{R})\rightarrow H^{*}_c(G,\mathbb{R})$ is surjective in degrees $*\geq \text{s…
