In this paper, I prove a splitting theorem for equifocal submanifolds with non-flat section in a simply connected symmetric space of compact type. Also, by using the splitting theorem, I prove that the sections of equifocal submanifolds with non-flat section in an irreducible simply connected symmetric space of compact type are isometric to a sphere or a real projective space.
First we show that a curvature-adapted proper complex equifocal submanifold is a principal orbit of a Hermann type action under certain condition. Next we show that a proper complex equifocal submanifold is curvature-adapted under certain condition.
In this paper, we investigate the mean curvature flow having equifocal submanifolds as initial data. The investigation are performed by investigating the mean curvature flow having the lifted submanifolds to a Hilbert space through a Riemannian submersion as initial data.
We investigate the homogeneity of certain kind of slices of the complete complexification of a proper complex equifocal submanifold in a symmetric space of non-compact type.
In this paper, we show that there exists no equifocal submanifold with non-flat section in four irreducible simply connected symmetric spaces of compact type and rank two. Also, we show a fact for the sections of equifocal submanifolds with non-flat section in other irreducible simply connected symmetric spaces of compact type and rank two.
In this paper, we show that an irreducible proper complex equifocal submanifold of codimension greater than one in a symmetric space of non-compact type. The proof is performed by showing the homogeneity of the lift of the complexification of the original submanifold to some infinite dimensional anti-Kahelerian space.
In this paper, we investigate the mean curvature flows for an equifocal submanifold in a symmetric space of compact type and its focal submanifolds as initial data. It is known that equifocal submanifolds of codimension greater than one in irreducible symmetric spaces of compact type occur as principal orbits of Hermann actions. However, we investigate the flows conceptionally without use of this fact. Concretely the investigation is performed by investigating the mean curvature flows having the lifts of the submanifolds to an (infinite deiminsional separable) Hilbert space through a Riemannia…
A relevant property of equifocal submanifolds is that their parallel sets are still immersed submanifolds, which makes them a natural generalization of the so-called isoparametric submanifolds. In this paper, we prove that the regular fibers of an analytic map $π:M^{m+k}\to B^{k}$ are equifocal whenever $M^{m+k}$ is endowed with a complete Finsler metric and there is a restriction of $π$ which is a Finsler submersion for a certain Finsler metric on the image. In addition, we prove that when the fibers provide a singular foliation on $M^{m+k}$, then this foliation is Finsler.
In this paper, we investigate a curvature-adapted and proper complex equifocal submanifold in a symmetric space of non-compact type. The class of these submanifolds contains principal orbits of Hermann type actions as homogeneous examples. In future, the results in this paper will be used to give a submanifold geometrical characterization of principal orbits of Hermann type actions.
An equifocal submanifold M of a symmetric space N of compact type induces a foliation with singular leaves on N. In this paper we will show how to reconstruct the equifocal foliation starting from one of the singular leaves, the so-called focal manifolds. To be more concrete: The equifocal submanifold is equal to a partial tube B around the focal manifold and we will show how to construct B in this paper. Moreover, we will find a geometrical characterization of focal manifolds.
From the Lytchak's result for polar foliations on an irreducible simply connected symmetric space $G/K$ of compact type and rank greater than one, we can derive that there exists no equifocal submanifold with non-flat section whose codimension is greater than two in the symmetric space $G/K$. In the first-half part of this paper, we give a new proof of this non-existence theorem. The recipi of our new proof is as follows. Suppose that there exists an equifocal submanifold $M$ with non-flat section whose codimension is greater than two in an irreducible symmertric space $G/K$ of compact type an…
We prove that a submanifold with parallel focal structure, which is a generalization of isoparametric and equifocal submanifolds, induces a singular Riemannian foliation of the ambient space by its parallel and focal manifolds.
Let $π:P\to B$ be a smooth $G$-bundle over a compact Riemannian manifold $B$ and $c$ a smooth loop in $B$ of constant seed $a(>0)$, where $G$ is compact semi-simple Lie group. In this paper, we prove that the holonomy map ${\rm hol}_c:\mathcal A_P^{H^s}\to G$ is a homothetic submersion of coefficient $a$, where $s$ is a non-negative integer, $\mathcal A_P^{H^s}$ is the Hilbert space of all $H^s$-connections of the bundle $P$. In particular, we prove that, if $s=0$, then ${\rm hol}_c$ has minimal regularizable fibres. From this fact, we can derive that each component of the inverse image of any…
In the current article our primary objects of study are compact complex submanifolds of quotient manifolds of irreducible bounded symmetric domains by torsion free discrete lattices of automorphisms. We are interested in the characterization of the totally geodesic submanifolds among compact splitting complex submanifolds, i.e. under the assumption that the tangent sequence splits holomorphically over the submanifold.
Let $(Z,ω)$ be a connected Kahler manifold with an holomorphic action of the complex reductive Lie group $U^{\mathbb C}$, where $U$ is a compact connected Lie group acting in a hamiltonian fashion. Let $G$ be a closed compatible Lie group of $U^{\mathbb C}$ and let $M$ be a $G$-invariant connected submanifold of $Z$. Let $x\in M$. If $G$ is a real form of $U^{\mathbb C}$, we investigate conditions such that $G\cdot x$ compact implies $U^{\mathbb C} \cdot x$ is compact as well. The vice-versa is also investigated. We also characterize $G$-invariant real submanifolds such that the norm square of…
We use techniques based on the splitting tensor to explicitly integrate the Codazzi equation along the relative nullity distribution and express the second fundamental form in terms of the Jacobi tensor of the ambient space. This approach allows us to easily recover several important results in the literature on complete submanifolds with relative nullity of the sphere as well as derive new strong consequences in hyperbolic and Euclidean spaces. Among the consequences of our main theorem are results on submanifolds with sufficiently high index of relative nullity, submanifolds with nonpositive…
Given a compact manifold $M$ and a Riemannian manifold $N$ of bounded geometry, we consider the manifold ${\rm Imm} (M,N)$ of immersions from $M$ to $N$ and its subset ${\rm Imm}_μ(M,N)$ of those immersions with the property that the volume-form of the pull-back metric equals $μ$. We first show that the non-minimal elements of ${\rm Imm}_μ(M,N) $ form a splitting submanifold. On this submanifold we consider the Levi-Civita connection for various natural Sobolev metrics write down the geodesic equation and show local well-posedness in many cases. The question is a natural generalization of the …
The notion of nonpositive curvature in Alexandrov's sense is extended to include p-uniformly convex Banach spaces. Infinite dimensional manifolds of semi-negative curvature with a p-uniformly convex tangent norm fall in this class on nonpositively curved spaces, and several well-known results, such as existence and uniqueness of best approximations from convex closed sets, or the Bruhat-Tits fixed point theorem, are shown to hold in this setting, without dimension restrictions. Homogeneous spaces G/K of Banach-Lie groups of semi-negative curvature are also studied, explicit estimates on the ge…
Let $X=G/K$ be a higher rank symmetric space of non-compact type, where $G$ is the connected component of the isometry group of $X$. We define the splitting rank of $X$, denoted by $\text{srk}(X)$, to be the maximal dimension of a totally geodesic submanifold $Y\subset X$ which splits off an isometric $\mathbb R$-factor. We compute explicitly the splitting rank for each irreducible symmetric space. For an arbitrary (not necessarily irreducible) symmetric space, we show that the comparison map $η:H^{*}_{c,b}(G,\mathbb{R})\rightarrow H^{*}_c(G,\mathbb{R})$ is surjective in degrees $*\geq \text{s…
In this note it is shown that Berwald spaces admitting the same norm-preserving torsion-free affine connection have the same (weighted) Ricci curvatures. Combing this with Szabó's Berwald metrization theorem one can apply the Cheeger-Gromoll splitting theorem in order to get a full structure theorem for Berwald spaces of non-negative Ricci curvature. Furthermore, if none of the factor is a symmetric space one obtains an explicit expression of Finsler norm of the resulting product. By the general structure theorem one can apply the soul theorem to the factor in case of non-negative flag curvatu…
We prove a normal form theorem for Poisson structures around Poisson transversals (also called cosymplectic submanifolds), which simultaneously generalizes Weinstein's symplectic neighborhood theorem from symplectic geometry and Weinstein's splitting theorem. Our approach turns out to be essentially canonical, and as a byproduct, we obtain an equivariant version of the latter theorem.
We consider a global, nonlinear version of the Whitney extension problem for manifold-valued smooth functions on closed domains $C$, with non-smooth boundary, in possibly non-compact manifolds. Assuming $C$ is a submanifold with corners, or is compact and locally convex with rough boundary, we prove that the restriction map from everywhere-defined functions is a submersion of locally convex manifolds and so admits local linear splittings on charts. This is achieved by considering the corresponding restriction map for locally convex spaces of compactly-supported sections of vector bundles, allo…
