We give a proof of the Gromov compactness theorem using the language of stable curves (i.e. cusp-curve of Gromov, or stable maps of Kontsevich and Manin) in general setting: An almost complex structure on a target manifold is only continuous and can vary; the curves are only assumed to have fixed ``topological type'', in particular they can be non-closed and the complex structures on them can vary arbitrarily.
In connection with this, we study in §2 moduli spaces of nodal curves with boundary and define a natural complex structure for such moduli spaces.
We obtain an apriori estimate for pseudoholomorphic maps of ``long cylinders'' (see §3), which gives a uniform description for degeneration of complex structure on the curves and for the ``bubbling'' phenomenon. It also implies the Hausdorff convergence of the curves.
We also prove in §5 the compactness theorem for curves with boundary on totally real submanifolds. For this ``boundary'' case we give appropriate generalizations of all ``inner'' constructions and estimates.
The goal of this work is to establish a proof of the Gromov convergence in Hoelder spaces for curves with a totally real boundary condition following the original geometric idea of Gromov. We use a local reflection principle in neighbourhoods of the totally real submanifold as developed by Ivashkovich and Shevchishin and existence results for special connections on spaces of jet bundles to obtain higher regularity and Gromov-Schwarz estimates along the boundary.
We prove a version of Gromov's compactness theorem for pseudo-holomorphic curves which holds locally in the target symplectic manifold. This result applies to sequences of curves with an unbounded number of free boundary components, and in families of degenerating target manifolds which have unbounded geometry (e.g. no uniform energy threshold). Core elements of the proof regard curves as submanifolds (rather than maps) and then adapt methods from the theory of minimal surfaces.
In this paper, we give both positive and negative answers to Gromov's compactness question regarding positive scalar curvature metrics on noncompact manifolds. First we construct examples that give a negative answer to Gromov's compactness question. These examples are based on the non-vanishing of certain index theoretic invariants that arise at the infinity of the given underlying manifold. This is a $ \sideset{}{^1}\varprojlim$ phenomenon and naturally leads one to conjecture that Gromov's compactness question has a positive answer provided that these $ \sideset{}{^1}\varprojlim$ invariants …
We present the Tetrahedral Compactness Theorem which states that sequences of Riemannian manifolds with a uniform upper bound on volume and diameter that satisfy a uniform tetrahedral property have a subsequence which converges in the Gromov-Hausdorff sense to a countably $\mathcal{H}^m$ rectifiable metric space of the same dimension. The tetrahedral property depends only on distances between points in spheres, yet we show it provides a lower bound on the volumes of balls. The proof is based upon intrinsic flat convergence and a new notion called the sliced filling volume of a ball.
We provide the details for Gromov's proof of Stallings' theorem on groups with infinitely many ends using harmonic functions. The main technical result of the paper is a compactness theorem for a certain family of harmonic functions.
In this paper, we mainly study the compactness and local structure of immersing surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with local uniform bounded area and small total curvature $\int_{Σ\cap B_1(0)} |A|^2$. A key ingredient is a new quantity which we call isothermal radius. Using the estimate of the isothermal radius we establish a compactness theorem of such surfaces in intrinsic $L^p$-topology and extrinsic $W^{2,2}$-weak topology. As applications, we can explain Leon Simon's decomposition theorem\cite{LS} in the viewpoint of convergence and prove a non-collapsing version of Hélein's convergence theorem\…
We introduce a natural definition of $L^p$-convergence of maps, $p \ge 1$, in the case where the domain is a convergent sequence of measured metric space with respect to the measured Gromov-Hausdorff topology and the target is a Gromov-Hausdorff convergent sequence. With the $L^p$-convergence, we establish a theory of variational convergences. We prove that the Poincaré inequality with some additional condition implies the asymptotic compactness. The asymptotic compactness is equivalent to the Gromov-Hausdorff compactness of the energy-sublevel sets. Supposing that the targets are $\CAT(0)$-sp…
This is one in a series of papers devoted to the foundations of Symplectic Field Theory sketched in [Y Eliashberg, A Givental and H Hofer, Introduction to Symplectic Field Theory, Geom. Funct. Anal. Special Volume, Part II (2000) 560--673]. We prove compactness results for moduli spaces of holomorphic curves arising in Symplectic Field Theory. The theorems generalize Gromov's compactness theorem in [M Gromov, Pseudo-holomorphic curves in symplectic manifolds, Invent. Math. 82 (1985) 307--347] as well as compactness theorems in Floer homology theory, [A Floer, The unregularized gradient flow of…
We prove a formula for the normal injectivity radius(thickness)i(K,M)for C^{1,1} compact submanifolds K^k of complete Riemannian manifolds M^n in terms of geometric focal distance and double critical points. We also prove the C^1 compactness of the set of all compact submanifolds K contained in a compact subset D of a fixed manifold M with i(K,M) bounded away from 0. This is an extrinsic and isometric embeddindg type theorem related to Gromov's compactness theorem. This yields the existence of thickest submanifolds in an isotopy class where K is not necessarily connected.
In this paper, we first prove the $f$-mean curvature comparison in a smooth metric measure space when the Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor is bounded from below and $|f|$ is bounded. Based on this, we define a Myers-type compactness theorem by generalizing the results of Cheeger, Gromov, and Taylor and of Wan for the Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor. Moreover, we improve a result from Soylu by using a weaker condition on a derivative $f'(t)$.
In arXiv:1005.3255 we proved an orbifold Cheeger-Gromov compactness theorem for complete 4d Ricci shrinkers with a lower bound for the entropy, an upper bound for the Euler characterisic, and a lower bound for the gradient of the potential at large distances. In this note, we show that the last two assumptions in fact can be removed. The key ingredient is a recent estimate of Cheeger-Naber arXiv:1406.6534.
Motivated by the Atiyah-Floer conjecture, we consider $SO(3)$ Santi-self-dual instantons on the product of the real line and a three-manifold with cylindrical end. We prove a Gromov-Uhlenbeck type compactness theorem, namely, any sequence of such instantons with uniform energy bound has a subsequence converging to a type of singular objects which may have both instanton and holomorphic curve components. This result is the first step towards constructing a natural bounding cochain proposed by Fukaya for the $SO(3)$ Atiyah-Floer conjecture.
A fundamental tool in the analysis of Ricci flow is a compactness result of Hamilton in the spirit of the work of Cheeger, Gromov and others. Roughly speaking it allows one to take a sequence of Ricci flows with uniformly bounded curvature and uniformly controlled injectivity radius, and extract a subsequence that converges to a complete limiting Ricci flow. A widely quoted extension of this result allows the curvature to be bounded uniformly only in a local sense. However, in this note we give a counterexample.
By Gromov's compactness theorem for metric spaces, every uniformly compact sequence of metric spaces admits an isometric embedding into a common compact metric space in which a subsequence converges with respect to the Hausdorff distance. Working in the class or oriented $k$-dimensional Riemannian manifolds (with boundary) and, more generally, integral currents in metric spaces in the sense of Ambrosio-Kirchheim and replacing the Hausdorff distance with the filling volume or flat distance, we prove an analogous compactness theorem in which we replace uniform compactness of the sequence with un…
We prove precompactness in an orbifold Cheeger-Gromov sense of complete gradient Ricci shrinkers with a lower bound on their entropy and a local integral Riemann bound. We do not need any pointwise curvature assumptions, volume or diameter bounds. In dimension four, under a technical assumption, we can replace the local integral Riemann bound by an upper bound for the Euler characteristic. The proof relies on a Gauss-Bonnet with cutoff argument.

Gromov and Sormani conjectured that sequences of compact Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative scalar curvature and area of minimal surfaces bounded below should have subsequences which converge in the intrinsic flat sense to limit spaces which have nonnegative generalized scalar curvature and Euclidean tangent cones almost everywhere. In this paper we prove this conjecture for sequences of rotationally symmetric warped product manifolds. We show that the limit spaces have $H^1$ warping function that has nonnegative scalar curvature in a weak sense, and have Euclidean tangent cones almost ever…
In this article, we produce infinite families of 4-manifolds with positive first betti numbers and meeting certain conditions on their homotopy and smooth types so as to conclude the non-vanishing of the stable cohomotopy Seiberg-Witten invariants of their connected sums. Elementary building blocks used in the earlier work of Ishida and Sasahira are shown to be included in our general construction scheme as well. We then use these families to construct the first examples of families of closed smooth 4-manifolds for which Gromov's simplicial volume is nontrivial, Perelman's lambda-bar invariant…
For a sequence $\{(M_i, g_i, x_i)\}$ of pointed Riemannian manifolds with boundary, the sequence $\{(M_i,\tilde g_i,x_i)\}$ is its conformal satellite if the metric $\tilde g_i$ is conformal to $g_i$, that is, $\tilde g_i=u^{\frac{4}{n-2}}_ig_i$. Assuming the manifolds $(M_i,g_i,x_i)$ have uniformly bounded geometry, we show that both sequences have smoothly Cheeger-Gromov convergent subsequences provided the conformal factors $u_i$ are principal eigenfunctions of an appropriate elliptic operator. Part of our result is a Cheeger-Gromov compactness for manifolds with boundary. We use stable ver…
We prove that a stable minimal hypersurface of an open ball having a singular set of locally finite codimension 2 Hausdorff measure which is weakly close to a multiplicity 2 hyperplane is a 2-valued C^{1, alpha} graph in the interior. Applications including a compactness theorem for a class of immersed stable minimal hypersurfaces and a pointwise curvature estimate for the hypersurfaces in this class in low dimensions are also discussed.
Let $Y$ be a closed $3$-manifold such that all flat $SU(2)$-connections on $Y$ are $non$-$degenerate$. In this article, we prove a Uhlenbeck-type compactness theorem on $Y$ for stable flat $SL(2,\mathbb{C})$ connections satisfying an $L^{2}$-bound for the real curvature. Combining the compactness theorem and a previous result in \cite{Huang}, we prove that the moduli space of the stable flat $SL(2,\mathbb{C})$ connections is disconnected under certain technical assumptions.
We exhibit the first non-trivial concrete examples of Gromov-Hausdorff compactifications of moduli spaces of Kähler-Einstein Fano manifolds in all complex dimensions bigger than two (Fano K-moduli spaces). We also discuss potential applications to explicit study of moduli spaces of K-stable Fano manifolds with large anti-canonical volume. Our arguments are based on recent progress about the geometry of metric tangent cones and on related ideas about the algebro-geometric study of singularities of K-stable Fano varieties.
In this note we reprove a theorem of Gromov using Ricci flow. The theorem states that a, possibly non-constant, lower bound on the scalar curvature is stable under $C^0$-convergence of the metric.
We introduce the stack of r-spin maps. These are stable maps into a variety V from n-pointed algebraic curves of genus g, with the additional data of an r-spin structure on the curve. We prove that this stack is a Deligne-Mumford stack, and we define analogs of the Gromov-Witten classes associated to these spaces. We show that these classes yield a cohomological field theory (CohFT) that is the tensor product of the CohFT associated to the usual Gromov-Witten invariants of V and the r-spin CohFT. When r=2, our construction gives the usual Gromov-Witten invariants of V. Restricting to genus zer…
We define relative Ruan invariants that count embedded connected symplectic submanifolds which contact a fixed stable symplectic hypersurface V in a symplectic 4-manifold (X,w) at prescribed points with prescribed contact orders (in addition to insertions on X\V) for stable V. We obtain invariants of the deformation class of (X,V,w). Two large issues must be tackled to define such invariants: (1) Curves lying in the hypersurface V and (2) genericity results for almost complex structures constrained to make V pseudo-holomorphic (or almost complex). Moreover, these invariants are refined to take…
We present an approach to Gromov-Witten invariants that works on arbitrary (closed) symplectic manifolds. We avoid genericity arguments and take into account singular curves in the very formulation. The method is by first endowing mapping spaces from (prestable) algebraic curves into the symplectic manifold with the structure of a Banach orbifold and then exhibiting the space of stable $J$-curves (``stable maps'') as zero set of a Fredholm section of a Banach orbibundle over this space. The invariants are constructed by pairing with a homology class on the locally compact topological space of …
We discuss a conjecture of Gromov and Lawson, later modified by Rosenberg, concerning the existence of metrics of positive scalar curvature. It says that a closed spin manifold $M$ of dimension $n\ge 5$ has such a metric if and only if the index of a suitable ``Dirac" operator in $KO_n(C^* (π_1(M)))$, the real $K$-theory of the group $C^*$-algebra of the fundamental group of $M$, vanishes. It is known that the vanishing of the index is necessary for existence of a positive scalar curvature metric on $M$, but this is known to be a sufficient condition only if $π_1(M)$ is the trivial group, $\Bb…
It follows from a theorem of Gromov that the stable systolic category of a closed manifold is bounded from below by the rational cup-length of the manifold. In the paper we study the inequality in the opposite direction. In particular, combining our results with Gromov's theorem, we prove the equality of stable systolic category and rational cup-length for simply connected manifolds of dimension less than 8.
I study Gromov-Hausdorff limits of complex curves endowed with singular flat metrics of constant diameter. I formulate a criterion that the limit is collapsed in terms of a certain piecewise affine weight function on the dual intersection complex of a semi-stable model of the degeneration introduced by Kontsevich and Soibelman. I describe the collapsed and non-collapsed limits, which are, respectively, metric graphs and finite collections of complex curves with flat metrics glued along finitely many points. I show that the collapsed limit of any positive genus can occur.
We prove an abstract compactness theorem for a family of generalized Seiberg-Witten equations in dimension three. This result recovers Taubes' compactness theorem for stable flat $\mathbf{P}\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbf{C})$-connections as well as the compactness theorem for Seiberg-Witten equations with multiple spinors. Furthermore, this result implies a compactness theorem for the ADHM$_{1,2}$ Seiberg-Witten equation, which partially verifies a conjecture by Doan and Walpuski.
Herein we present open problems and survey examples and theorems concerning sequences of Riemannian manifolds with uniform lower bounds on scalar curvature and their limit spaces. Examples of Gromov and of Ilmanen which naturally ought to have certain limit spaces do not converge with respect to smooth or Gromov-Hausdorff convergence. Thus we focus here on the notion of Intrinsic Flat convergence, developed jointly with Wenger. This notion has been applied successfully to study sequences that arise in General Relativity. Gromov has suggested it should be applied in other settings as well. We f…
In a previous paper we developed a regularity and compactness theory in Euclidean ambient spaces for codimension 1 weakly stable CMC integral varifolds satisfying two (necessary) structural conditions. Here we generalize this theory to the setting where the mean curvature (of the regular part of the varifold) is prescribed by a given $C^{1, α}$ ambient function $g$ and the ambient space is a general $(n+1)$-dimensional Riemannian manifold; we give general conditions that imply that the support of the varifold, away from a possible singular set of dimension $\leq n-7,$ is the image of a $C^{2}$…
We consider sequences of open Riemannian manifolds with boundary that have no regularity conditions on the boundary. To define a reasonable notion of a limit of such a sequence, we examine "$δ$ inner regions" which avoid the boundary by a distance $δ$. We prove Gromov-Hausdorff compactness theorems for sequences of these "$δ$ inner regions". We then build "glued limit spaces" out of the Gromov-Hausdorff limits of these $δ$ interior regions and study the properties of these glued limit spaces. Our main applications assume the sequence is noncollapsing and has nonnegative Ricci curvature. We inc…
Given a compact Riemannian manifold with umbilic boundary, the Yamabe boundary problem studies if there exist conformal scalar-flat metrics such that the boundary has constant mean curvature. In this paper we address to the stability of this problem with respect of perturbation of mean curvature of the boundary and scalar curvature of the manifold. In particular we prove that the Yamabe boundary problem is stable under perturbation of the mean curvature and the scalar curvature from below, while it is not stable if one of the two curvatures is perturbed from above.
Let $(M,\bar{g}, e^{-f}dμ)$ be a complete metric measure space with Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature bounded below by a positive constant. We prove that, in $M$, there is no complete two-sided $L_f$-stable immersed $f$-minimal hypersurface with finite weighted volume. Further, if $M$ is a 3-manifold, we prove a smooth compactness theorem for the space of complete embedded $f$-minimal surfaces in $M$ with the uniform upper bounds of genus and weighted volume, which generalizes the compactness theorem for complete self-shrinkers in $\mathbb{R}^3$ by Colding-Minicozzi.
