It follows from a theorem of Gromov that the stable systolic category of a closed manifold is bounded from below by the rational cup-length of the manifold. In the paper we study the inequality in the opposite direction. In particular, combining our results with Gromov's theorem, we prove the equality of stable systolic category and rational cup-length for simply connected manifolds of dimension less than 8.
We extend a systolic inequality of Guth for Riemannian manifolds of maximal $\mathbb{Z}_2$ cup-length to piecewise Riemannian complexes of dimension 2. As a consequence we improve the previous best universal lower bound for the systolic area of groups for a large class of groups, including free abelian and surface groups, most of irreducible 3-manifold groups, non-free Artin groups and Coxeter groups (or more generally), groups containing an element of order 2.
We prove that manifolds of Lusternik-Schnirelmann category 2 necessarily have free fundamental group. We thus settle a 1992 conjecture of Gomez-Larranaga and Gonzalez-Acuna, by generalizing their result in dimension 3, to all higher dimensions. We examine its ramifications in systolic topology, and provide a sufficient condition for ensuring a lower bound of 3 for systolic category.
The stable systolic category of a closed manifold M indicates the complexity in the sense of volume. This is a homotopy invariant, even though it is defined by some relations between homological volumes on M. We show an equality of the stable systolic category and the real cup-length for the product of arbitrary finite dimensional real homology spheres. Also we prove the invariance of the stable systolic category under the rational equivalences for orientable 0-universal manifolds.
We show that the geometry of a Riemannian manifold (M,g) is sensitive to the apparently purely homotopy-theoretic invariant of M known as the Lusternik-Schnirelmann category, denoted cat_{LS}(M). Here we introduce a Riemannian analogue of cat_{LS}(M), called the systolic category of M. It is denoted cat_{sys}(M), and defined in terms of the existence of systolic inequalities satisfied by every metric g, as initiated by C. Loewner and later developed by M. Gromov. We compare the two categories. In all our examples, the inequality cat_{sys}(M) \le cat_{LS}(M) is satisfied, which typically turns …
We prove a new systolic volume lower bound for non-orientable n-manifolds, involving the stable 1-systole and the codimension 1 systole with coefficients in Z_2. As an application, we prove that Lusternik-Schnirelmann category and systolic category agree for non-orientable closed manifolds of dimension 3, extending our earlier result in the orientable case. Finally, we prove the homotopy invariance of systolic category.
We show that the existence of a nontrivial Massey product in the cohomology ring H^*(X) imposes global constraints upon the Riemannian geometry of a manifold X. Namely, we exhibit a suitable systolic inequality, associated to such a product. This generalizes an inequality proved in collaboration with Y. Rudyak, in the case when X has unit Betti numbers, and realizes the next step in M. Gromov's program for obtaining geometric inequalities associated with nontrivial Massey products. The inequality is a volume lower bound, and depends on the metric via a suitable isoperimetric quotient. The proo…
Given a closed manifold M, we prove the upper bound of (n+d)/2 for the length of a product of systoles that can form a curvature-free lower bound for the total volume of M, in the spirit of M. Gromov's systolic inequalities. Here n is the dimension of M, while d is the is the cohomological dimension of its fundamental group. We apply this upper bound to show that, in the case of a 4-manifold, the Lusternik--Schnirelmann category is an upper bound for such length. Furthermore we prove a systolic inequality on a manifold M with b_1(M)=2 in the presence of a nontrivial self-linking class of the t…
Our main result offers a new (quite systematic) way of deriving bounds for the cup-length of Poincare spaces over fields; we outline a general research program based on this result. For the oriented Grassmann manifolds, already a limited realization of the program leads, in many cases, to the exact values of the cup-length and to interesting information on the Lyusternik-Shnirel'man category.
We also obtain some general results on the relations between the fundamental group of a closed manifold M, the dimension of M, and the Lusternik-Schnirelmann category of M, and relate the latter to the systolic category of M.
Let $\mathcal{F}$ be a compact Hausdorff foliation on a compact manifold. Let ${E_2^{>0,\bullet}}=\oplus\{E_2^{p,q}\colon p>0,q\geq 0\}$ be the subalgebra of cohomology classes with positive transverse degree in the $E_2$ term of the spectral sequence of the foliation. We prove that the saturated transverse Lusternik-Schnirelmann category of $\mathcal{F}$ is bounded below by the length of the cup product in ${E_2^{>0,\bullet}}$. Other cohomological bounds are discussed.
We determine the cup-length of some oriented Grassmann manifolds by finding a Groebner basis associated with a certain subring of the cohomology of them. As its applications, we provide not only a lower but also an upper bound for the LS-category of some oriented Grassmann manifolds. We also study the immersion problem of them.
We describe a fully faithful embedding of the category of (reflexive) globular sets into the category of counital cosymmetric $R$-coalgebras when $R$ is an integral domain. This embedding is a lift of the usual functor of $R$-chains and the extra structure consists of a derived form of cup coproduct. Additionally, we construct a functor from group-like counital cosymmetric \mbox{$R$-coalgebras} to $ω$-categories and use it to connect two fundamental constructions associated to oriented simplices: Steenrod's cup-$i$ coproducts and Street's orientals. The first defines the square operations in t…
Using the combinatorics of the underlying simplicial complex $K$, we give various upper and lower bounds for the Lusternik-Schnirelmann (LS) category of moment-angle complexes $\zk$. We describe families of simplicial complexes and combinatorial operations which allow for a systematic description of the LS category. In particular, we characterise the LS category of moment-angle complexes $\zk$ over triangulated $d$-manifolds $K$ for $d\leq 2$, as well as higher dimension spheres built up via connected sum, join, and vertex doubling operations. %This characterisation is given in terms of the co…
The "simplicial complexes" and "join" (*) today used within combinatorics aren't the classical concepts, cf. Spanier (1966) p. 108-9, but, exept for \emptyset, complexes having {\emptyset} as a subcomplex resp. \Sigma1 * \Sigma2 := {\sigma1 \cup \sigma2 | \sigmai \in \Sigmai} implying a tacit change of unit element w.r.t. the join operation, from \emptyset to {\emptyset}. Extending the classical realization functor to this category of simplicial complexes we end up with a "restricted" category of topological spaces, "containing" the classical and where the classical (co)homology theory, as wel…
We describe stable cup-i products on the cochain complex with $F^2$ coefficients of any augmented semi-simplicial object in the Burnside category. An example of such an object is the Khovanov functor of Lawson, Lipshitz and Sarkar. Thus we obtain explicit formulas for cohomology operations on the Khovanov homology of any link.
We define a simplicial category called the category of derived manifolds. It contains the category of smooth manifolds as a full discrete subcategory, and it is closed under taking arbitrary intersections in a manifold. A derived manifold is a space together with a sheaf of local $C^\infty$-rings that is obtained by patching together homotopy zero-sets of smooth functions on Euclidean spaces. We show that derived manifolds come equipped with a stable normal bundle and can be imbedded into Euclidean space. We define a cohomology theory called derived cobordism, and use a Pontrjagin-Thom argumen…
We investigate the existence of an H-space structure on the function space, F_*(X,Y,*), of based maps in the component of the trivial map between two pointed connected CW-complexes X and Y. For that, we introduce the notion of H(n)-space and prove that we have an H-space structure on F_*(X,Y,*) if Y is an H(n)-space and X is of Lusternik-Schnirelmann category less than or equal to n. When we consider the rational homotopy type of nilpotent finite type CW-complexes, the existence of an H(n)-space structure can be easily detected on the minimal model and coincides with the differential length co…
