The stable systolic category of a closed manifold M indicates the complexity in the sense of volume. This is a homotopy invariant, even though it is defined by some relations between homological volumes on M. We show an equality of the stable systolic category and the real cup-length for the product of arbitrary finite dimensional real homology spheres. Also we prove the invariance of the stable systolic category under the rational equivalences for orientable 0-universal manifolds.
It follows from a theorem of Gromov that the stable systolic category of a closed manifold is bounded from below by the rational cup-length of the manifold. In the paper we study the inequality in the opposite direction. In particular, combining our results with Gromov's theorem, we prove the equality of stable systolic category and rational cup-length for simply connected manifolds of dimension less than 8.
We show that the geometry of a Riemannian manifold (M,g) is sensitive to the apparently purely homotopy-theoretic invariant of M known as the Lusternik-Schnirelmann category, denoted cat_{LS}(M). Here we introduce a Riemannian analogue of cat_{LS}(M), called the systolic category of M. It is denoted cat_{sys}(M), and defined in terms of the existence of systolic inequalities satisfied by every metric g, as initiated by C. Loewner and later developed by M. Gromov. We compare the two categories. In all our examples, the inequality cat_{sys}(M) \le cat_{LS}(M) is satisfied, which typically turns …
We prove that manifolds of Lusternik-Schnirelmann category 2 necessarily have free fundamental group. We thus settle a 1992 conjecture of Gomez-Larranaga and Gonzalez-Acuna, by generalizing their result in dimension 3, to all higher dimensions. We examine its ramifications in systolic topology, and provide a sufficient condition for ensuring a lower bound of 3 for systolic category.
We prove a new systolic volume lower bound for non-orientable n-manifolds, involving the stable 1-systole and the codimension 1 systole with coefficients in Z_2. As an application, we prove that Lusternik-Schnirelmann category and systolic category agree for non-orientable closed manifolds of dimension 3, extending our earlier result in the orientable case. Finally, we prove the homotopy invariance of systolic category.
Given a closed manifold M, we prove the upper bound of (n+d)/2 for the length of a product of systoles that can form a curvature-free lower bound for the total volume of M, in the spirit of M. Gromov's systolic inequalities. Here n is the dimension of M, while d is the is the cohomological dimension of its fundamental group. We apply this upper bound to show that, in the case of a 4-manifold, the Lusternik--Schnirelmann category is an upper bound for such length. Furthermore we prove a systolic inequality on a manifold M with b_1(M)=2 in the presence of a nontrivial self-linking class of the t…
A criterion to determine the L-S category of a total space of a sphere-bundle over a sphere is given in terms of homotopy invariants of its characteristic map, and thus providing a complete answer to Ganea's Problem 4. As a result, we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for such a total space $N$ to have the same L-S category as its `once punctured submanifold' $N\smallsetminus\{P\}$, $P \in N$. Also a necessary condition for such a total space $M$ to satisfy Ganea's conjecture is obtained.
We also obtain some general results on the relations between the fundamental group of a closed manifold M, the dimension of M, and the Lusternik-Schnirelmann category of M, and relate the latter to the systolic category of M.
We describe the constructible derived category of sheaves on the $n$-sphere, stratified in a point and its complement, as a dg module category of a formal dg algebra. We prove formality by exploring two different methods: As a combinatorial approach, we reformulate the problem in terms of representations of quivers and prove formality for the 2-sphere, for coefficients in a principal ideal domain. We give a suitable generalization of this formality result for the 2-sphere stratified in several points and their complement. As a geometric approach, we give a description of the underlying dg alge…
In this paper we study the global structure of the stable homotopy theory of spectra. We establish criteria for when the homotopy theory associated to a given stable model category agrees with the classical stable homotopy theory of spectra. One sufficient condition is that the associated homotopy category is equivalent to the stable homotopy category as a triangulated category with an action of the ring of stable homotopy groups of spheres. In other words, the classical stable homotopy theory, with all of its higher order information, is determined by the homotopy category as a triangulated c…
If C=C_ϕdenotes the mapping cone of an essential phantom map ϕfrom the suspension of the Eilenberg-Mac Lane complex K=K(Z,5) to the 4-sphere S=S^4 we derive the following properties: (1) The LS category of the product of C with any n-sphere S^n is equal to 3; (2) The LS category of the product of C with itself is equal to 3, hence is strictly less than twice the LS category of C. These properties came to light in the course of an unsuccessful attempt to find, for each positive integer m, an example of a pair of 1-connected CW-complexes of finite type in the same Mislin (localization) genus wit…
We construct a lift of the $p$-complete sphere to the universal height $1$ higher semiadditive stable $\infty$-category tsade-$1$ of Carmeli--Schlank--Yanovski, providing a counterexample, at height $1$, to their conjecture that the natural functor from tsade-$n$ to $\mathrm{Sp}_{T(n)}$ is an equivalence. We then record some consequences of the construction, including an observation of T. Schlank that this gives a conceptual proof of a classical theorem of Lee on the stable cohomotopy of Eilenberg--MacLane spaces.
In this paper, we introduce a category of graded commutative rings with certain algebraic morphisms, to investigate the cobordism category of plumbed 3-manifolds. In particular, we define a non-associative distributive algebra that gives necessary conditions for an abstract morphism between the homologies of two plumbed 3-manifolds to be realized geometrically by a cobordism. Here we also consider the homology cobordism monoid, and give a necessary condition using w-invariants for the homology 3-spheres to belong to the inertia group associated to some homology 3-spheres.
We show that all coalgebras over the sphere spectrum are cocommutative in the category of symmetric spectra, orthogonal spectra, $Γ$-spaces, $\mathcal{W}$-spaces and EKMM $\mathbb{S}$-modules. Our result only applies to these strict monoidal categories of spectra and does not apply to the $\infty$-category setting.
For groups of prime order, equivariant stable maps between equivariant representation spheres are investigated using the Borel cohomology Adams spectral sequence. Features of the equivariant stable homotopy category, such as stability and duality, are shown to lift to the category of modules over the associated Steenrod algebra. The dependence on the dimension functions of the representations is clarified.
We define the derived category of a concrete category in a way which extends the usual definition of the derived category of a ring, and we prove that the bounded-below derived category of $\Spec \mathbb{M}_0$ (an approximation, used by e.g. Connes and Consani, to "$\Spec$ of the field with one element") is the stable homotopy category of connective spectra. We also describe some basic features of Grothendieck duality for the map from $\Spec \mathbb{Z}$ to $\Spec \mathbb{M}_0$, or, what comes to the same thing, the map from $\Spec \mathbb{Z}$ to $\Spec$ of the sphere spectrum; these basic feat…
In this paper we explore the isotropic stable motivic homotopy category constructed from the usual stable motivic homotopy category, following the work of Vishik on isotropic motives (see [29]), by killing anisotropic varieties. In particular, we focus on cohomology operations in the isotropic realm and study the structure of the isotropic Steenrod algebra. Then, we construct an isotropic version of the motivic Adams spectral sequence and apply it to find a complete description of the isotropic stable homotopy groups of the sphere spectrum, which happen to be isomorphic to the $Ext$-groups of …
Ananyevsky has recently computed the stable operations and cooperations of rational Witt theory. These computations enable us to show a motivic analog of Serre's finiteness result: Theorem: Let $k$ be a field. Then $π^{\mathbb{A}^1}_ n(\mathbb{S}^- _k )_*$ is torsion for $n > 0$. As an application we define a category of Witt motives over $k$ and show that rationally this category is equivalent to the minus part of $SH(k)_\mathbb{Q}$.
The level of a module over a differential graded algebra measures the number of steps required to build the module in an appropriate triangulated category. Based on this notion, we introduce a new homotopy invariant of spaces over a fixed space, called the level of a map. Moreover we provide a method to compute the invariant for spaces over a $\K$-formal space. This enables us to determine the level of the total space of a bundle over the 4-dimensional sphere with the aid of Auslander-Reiten theory for spaces due to Jørgensen. We also discuss the problem of realizing an indecomposable object i…
We describe the algebraic K-theory of the $K(1)$-local sphere and the category of type 2 finite spectra in terms of K-theory of discrete rings and topological cyclic homology. We find an infinite family of 2-torsion classes in the $K_0$ of type 2 spectra at the prime 2, and explain how to construct representatives of these $K_0$ classes.
Let G be a finite group. The unit sphere in a finite-dimensional orthogonal G-representation motivates the definition of homotopy representations, due to tom Dieck. We introduce an algebraic analogue, and establish its basic properties including the Borel-Smith conditions and realization by finite G-CW-complexes.
Waldhausen's $K$-theory of the sphere spectrum (closely related to the algebraic $K$-theory of the integers) is a naturally augmented $S^0$-algebra, and so has a Koszul dual. Classic work of Deligne and Goncharov implies an identification of the rationalization of this (covariant) dual with the Hopf algebra of functions on the motivic group for their category of mixed Tate motives over $\Z$. This paper argues that the rationalizations of categories of non-commutative motives defined recently by Blumberg, Gepner, and Tabuada consequently have natural enrichments, with morphism objects in the de…
For each prime $p$, we define a $t$-structure on the category $\widehat{S^{0,0}}/τ\text{-}\mathbf{Mod}_{harm}^b$ of harmonic $\mathbb{C}$-motivic left module spectra over $\widehat{S^{0,0}}/τ$, whose MGL-homology has bounded Chow-Novikov degree, such that its heart is equivalent to the abelian category of $p$-completed $BP_*BP$-comodules that are concentrated in even degrees. We prove that $\widehat{S^{0,0}}/τ\text{-}\mathbf{Mod}_{harm}^b$ is equivalent to $\mathcal{D}^b({{BP}_*{BP}\text{-}\mathbf{Comod}}^{ev})$ as stable $\infty$-categories equipped with $t$-structures. As an application, for…
A K(pi,1)-foliation is one for which the universal covers of all leaves are contractible (thus all leaves are K(pi,1)'s for some pi). In the first part of the paper we show that the tangential Lusternik--Schnirelmann category cat F of a K(pi,1)-foliation F on a manifold M is bounded from below by t-codim F for any t with H_t(M;A) nonzero for some coefficient group A. Since for any C^2-foliation F one has cat F <= dim F by our Theorem 5.2 of [Topology 42 (2003) 603-627], this implies that cat F = dim F for K(pi,1)-foliations of class C^2 on closed manifolds. For K(pi,1)-foliations on open manif…
Let k be an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. Let SH(k) denote the motivic stable homotopy category of T-spectra over k and SH the classical stable homotopy category. Let c:SH -> SH(k) be the functor induced by sending a space to the constant presheaf of spaces on Sm/k. We show that c is fully faithful. In particular, c induces an isomorphism π_n(E)-> π_{n,0}c(E) for all spectra E. Fix an embedding of k into the complex numbers and let Re:SH(k) -> SH be the associated Betti realization. We show that the slice tower for the motivic sphere spectrum has Betti realization which is…
Using the combinatorics of the underlying simplicial complex $K$, we give various upper and lower bounds for the Lusternik-Schnirelmann (LS) category of moment-angle complexes $\zk$. We describe families of simplicial complexes and combinatorial operations which allow for a systematic description of the LS category. In particular, we characterise the LS category of moment-angle complexes $\zk$ over triangulated $d$-manifolds $K$ for $d\leq 2$, as well as higher dimension spheres built up via connected sum, join, and vertex doubling operations. %This characterisation is given in terms of the co…
Recently, Tsai-Tseng-Yau constructed new invariants of symplectic manifolds: a sequence of Aoo-algebras built of differential forms on the symplectic manifold. We show that these symplectic Aoo-algebras have a simple topological interpretation. Namely, when the cohomology class of the symplectic form is integral, these Aoo-algebras are equivalent to the standard de Rham differential graded algebra on certain odd-dimensional sphere bundles over the symplectic manifold. From this equivalence, we deduce for a closed symplectic manifold that Tsai-Tseng-Yau's symplectic Aoo-algebras satisfy the Cal…
We introduce the notion of a bounded weight structure on a stable $\infty$-category and use this to prove the natural generalization of Waldhausen's sphere theorem: We show that the algebraic $K$-theory of a stable $\infty$-category with a bounded non-degenerate weight structure is equivalent to the algebraic $K$-theory of the heart of the weight structure.
Let X be a Noetherian scheme of finite dimension and denote by rho the (additive inverse of the) morphism in SH(X) from S to Gm corresponding to the unit -1. Here SH(X) denotes the motivic stable homotopy category. We show that the category obtained by inverting rho in SH(X) is canonically equivalent to the (simplicial) local stable homotopy category of the site X_ret, by which we mean the small real etale site of X, comprised of etale schemes over X with the real etale topology. One immediate application is that SH(RR)[rho^-1] is equivalent to the classical stable homotopy category. In partic…
Picard 2-categories are symmetric monoidal 2-categories with invertible 0-, 1-, and 2-cells. The classifying space of a Picard 2-category $\mathcal{D}$ is an infinite loop space, the zeroth space of the $K$-theory spectrum $K\mathcal{D}$. This spectrum has stable homotopy groups concentrated in levels 0, 1, and 2. In this paper, we describe part of the Postnikov data of $K\mathcal{D}$ in terms of categorical structure. We use this to show that there is no strict skeletal Picard 2-category whose $K$-theory realizes the 2-truncation of the sphere spectrum. As part of the proof, we construct a ca…
We consider mapping class groups Γ(M) = pi_0 Diff(M fix \partial M) of smooth compact simply connected oriented 4-manifolds M bounded by a collection of 3-spheres. We show that if M contains CP^2 (with either orientation) as a connected summand then Γ(M) is independent of the number of boundary components. By repackaging classical results of Wall, Kreck and Quinn, we show that the natural homomorphism from the mapping class group to the group of automorphisms of the intersection form becomes an isomorphism after stabilization with respect to connected sum with CP^2 # \bar{CP^2}. We next consid…
A localisation of the category of n-manifolds is introduced by formally inverting the connected sum construction with a chosen n-manifold Y. On the level of automorphism groups, this leads to the stable diffeomorphism groups of n-manifolds. In dimensions 0 and 2, this is connected to the stable homotopy groups of spheres and the stable mapping class groups of Riemann surfaces. In dimension 4 there are many essentially different candidates for the n-manifold Y to choose from. It is shown that the Bauer--Furuta invariants provide invariants in the case Y = CP^2, which is related to the birationa…
We construct and discuss new numerical homotopy invariants of topological spaces that are suitable for the study of functions on loop and sphere spaces. These invariants resemble the Lusternik-Schnirelmann category and provide lower bounds for the numbers of critical orbits of SO(n)-invariant functions on spaces of n-spheres in a manifold. Lower bounds on these invariants are derived using weights of cohomology classes. As an application, we prove new existence results for closed geodesics on Finsler manifolds of positive flag curvature satisfying a pinching condition.
