Our main result offers a new (quite systematic) way of deriving bounds for the cup-length of Poincare spaces over fields; we outline a general research program based on this result. For the oriented Grassmann manifolds, already a limited realization of the program leads, in many cases, to the exact values of the cup-length and to interesting information on the Lyusternik-Shnirel'man category.

Stable Systolic Category of Manifolds and the Cup-length

It follows from a theorem of Gromov that the stable systolic category of a closed manifold is bounded from below by the rational cup-length of the manifold. In the paper we study the inequality in the opposite direction. In particular, combining our results with Gromov's theorem, we prove the equality of stable systolic category and rational cup-length for simply connected manifolds of dimension less than 8.

Polynomial solving algorithms are essential to applied mathematics and the sciences. As such, reduction of their complexity has become an incredibly important field of topological research. We present a topological approach to constructing a lower bound for the complexity of a polynomial-solving algorithm, and give a concrete algorithm to do this in the case that $\mathrm{deg}(f) = 2,3,4$.

On the zero-divisor-cup-length of spaces of oriented isometry classes of planar polygons

Using information about the rational cohomology ring of the space of oriented isometry classes of planar n-gons with specified side lengths, we obtain bounds for the zero-divisor-cup-length (zcl) of these spaces, which provide lower bounds for their topological complexity (TC). In many cases our result about the cohomology ring is complete and we determine the precise zcl. We find that there will usually be a significant gap between the bounds for TC implied by zcl and dimensional considerations.

A systolic inequality for 2-complexes of maximal cup-length and systolic area of groups

We extend a systolic inequality of Guth for Riemannian manifolds of maximal $\mathbb{Z}_2$ cup-length to piecewise Riemannian complexes of dimension 2. As a consequence we improve the previous best universal lower bound for the systolic area of groups for a large class of groups, including free abelian and surface groups, most of irreducible 3-manifold groups, non-free Artin groups and Coxeter groups (or more generally), groups containing an element of order 2.

The characteristic rank and cup-length in oriented Grassmann manifolds

In the first part, this paper studies the characteristic rank of the canonical oriented $k$-plane bundle over the Grassmann manifold $SO(n)/(SO(k) \times SO(n-k))$ of oriented $k$-planes in Euclidean $n$-space. Biequivariant Maps on Spheres and Topological Complexity of Lens Spaces

Weighted cup-length calculations in singular cohomology led Farber and Grant in 2008 to general lower bounds for the topological complexity of lens spaces. We replace singular cohomology by K-theory, and weighted cup-length arguments by considerations with biequivariant maps on spheres to improve on Farber-Grant's bounds by arbitrarily large amounts. Our calculations are based on the identification of key elements conjectured to generate the annihilator ideal of the toral bottom class in the ku-homology of the classifying space of a rank-2 abelian 2-group.
