The perturbative Chern-Simons theory for knots in Euclidean space is a linear combination of integrals on configuration spaces. This has been successively studied by Bott and Taubes, Altschuler and Freidel, and Yang. We study it again in terms of degree theory, with a new choice of compactification. This paper is self-contained and proves some old and new results, especially a rationality result with some information on the denominators.
We formulate a conjecture (already proven by A. Kricker) about the structure of Kontsevich integral of a knot. We describe its value in terms of the generating functions for the numbers of external edges attached to closed 3-valent diagrams. We conjecture that these functions are rational functions of the exponentials of their arguments, their denominators being the powers of the Alexander-Conway polynomial. This conjecture implies the existence of an expansion of a colored Jones (HOMFLY) polynomial in powers of q-1 whose coefficients are rational functions of q^color. We show how to derive th…
This work develops some technology for accessing the loop expansion of the Kontsevich integral of a knot. The setting is an application of the LMO invariant to certain surgery presentations of knots by framed links in the solid torus. A consequence of this technology is a certain recent conjecture of Rozansky's. Rozansky conjectured that the Kontsevich integral could be organised into a series of ``lines'' which could be represented by finite $\Qset$-linear combinations of diagrams whose edges were labelled, in an appropriate sense, with rational functions. Furthermore, the conjecture requires…
Suppose that a hyperbolic knot in $S^3$ admits a finite surgery, Boyer and Zhang proved that the surgery slope must be either integral or half-integral, and they conjectured that the latter case does not happen. Using the correction terms in Heegaard Floer homology, we prove that if a hyperbolic knot in $S^3$ admits a half-integral finite surgery, then the knot must have the same knot Floer homology as one of eight non-hyperbolic knots which are known to admit such surgeries, and the resulting manifold must be one of ten spherical space forms. As knot Floer homology carries a lot of informatio…
We show that on any hyperbolic knot in $S^3$ there is at most one non-integral Dehn surgery which yields a manifold containing an incompressible torus.
In this paper we propose {\it a region choice problem} for a knot projection. This problem is an integral extension of Shimizu's 'region crossing change unknotting operation.' We show that there exists a solution of the region choice problem for all knot projections.
Using the correction terms in Heegaard Floer homology, we prove that if a knot in $S^3$ admits a positive integral $\mathbf{T}$-, $\mathbf{O}$- or $\mathbf{I}$-type surgery, it must have the same knot Floer homology as one of the knots given in our complete list, and the resulting manifold is orientation-preservingly homeomorphic to the $p$-surgery on the corresponding knot.
Following the classification of genus one fibered knots in lens spaces by Baker, we determine hyperbolic genus one fibered knots in lens spaces on whose all integral Dehn surgeries yield closed 3-manifolds with left-orderable fundamental groups.
This article surveys the use of configuration space integrals in the study of the topology of knot and link spaces. The main focus is the exposition of how these integrals produce finite type invariants of classical knots and links. More generally, we also explain the construction of a chain map, given by configuration space integrals, between a certain diagram complex and the deRham complex of the space of knots in dimension four or more. A generalization to spaces of links, homotopy links, and braids is also treated, as are connections to Milnor invariants, manifold calculus of functors, and…
We prove that there are infinitely many non-homeomorphic hyperbolic knot complements $S^3\setminus K_i = \mathbb{H}^3/Γ_i$ for which $Γ_i$ contains elements whose trace is an algebraic non-integer.
We study the unwheeled rational Kontsevich integral of torus knots. We give a precise formula for these invariants up to loop degree 3 and show that they appear as colorings of simple diagrams. We show that they behave under cyclic branched coverings in a very simple way. Our proof is combinatorial: it uses the results of Wheels and Wheelings and new decorations of diagrams.
In this note we prove that for any finite quandle $X$ and any 2-cocycle $ϕ\in Z^2_{Q\pm}(X; \mathds{Z})$, the cocycle invariant $Φ^{\pm}_ϕ(K)$ is trivial for all knots $K$.
We study the rational Kontsevich integral of torus knots. We construct explicitely a series of diagrams made of circles joined together in a tree-like fashion and colored by some special rational functions. We show that this series codes exactly the unwheeled rational Kontsevich integral of torus knots, and that it behaves very simply under branched coverings. Our proof is combinatorial. It uses the results of Wheels and Wheeling and various spaces of diagrams.
In a previous article, we constructed an invariant Z for null-homologous knots in rational homology spheres, from equivariant intersections in configuration spaces. Here we present an equivalent definition of Z in terms of configuration space integrals, we prove that Z is multiplicative under connected sum, and we prove null Lagrangian-preserving surgery formulae for Z. Our formulae generalize similar formulae that are satisfied by the Kricker rational lift of the Kontsevich integral for null Borromean surgeries. They imply that Z is universal with respect to a natural filtration. According to…
There is a higher dimensional analogue of the perturbative Chern-Simons theory in the sense that a similar perturbative series as in 3-dimension, which is computed via configuration space integral, yields an invariant of higher dimensional knots (Bott-Cattaneo-Rossi invariant), which is constructed by Bott for degree 2 and by Cattaneo-Rossi for higher degrees. However, its feature is yet unknown. In this paper we restrict the study to long ribbon n-knots and characterize the Bott-Cattaneo-Rossi invariant as a finite type invariant of long ribbon n-knots in [HKS]. As a consequence, we obtain a …
We study the 2-loop part of the rational Kontsevich integral of a knot in an integer homology sphere. We give a general formula which explains how the 2-loop part of the Kontsevich integral of a knot changes after surgery on a single clasper whose leaves are not linked to the knot. As an application, we relate this formula with a conjecture of L. Rozansky about integrality of the 2-loop polynomial of a knot.
Which slopes can or cannot appear as Seifert fibered slopes for hyperbolic knots in the 3-sphere S^3? It is conjectured that if r-surgery on a hyperbolic knot in S^3 yields a Seifert fiber space, then r is an integer. We show that for each integer n, there exists a tunnel number one, hyperbolic knot K_n in S^3 such that n-surgery on K_n produces a small Seifert fiber space.
We give a formula of the Upsilon invariant of any L-space cable knot $K_{p,q}$ using $p,Υ_K$ and $Υ_{T_{p,q}}$. The integral value of the Upsilon invariant gives a ${\mathbb Q}$-valued knot concordance invariant. We compute the integral values for L-space iterated cable knots.
For a hyperbolic knot in the 3-sphere, at most finitely many Dehn surgeries yield non-hyperbolic 3-manifolds. As a typical case of such an exceptional surgery, a toroidal surgery is one that yields a closed 3-manifold containing an incompressible torus. The slope corresponding to a toroidal surgery, called a toroidal slope, is known to be integral or half-integral. We show that the distance between two integral toroidal slopes for a hyperbolic knot, except the figure-eight knot, is at most four. Hence any hyperbolic knot admits at most 5 toroidal surgeries.
I calculate optimistically asymptotic behaviors of the WRT SU(2) invariants for the three-manifolds obtained from the figure-eight knot by p-surgeries with p=0,1,2,...,10, from which one can extract volumes and the Chern-Simons invariants of these closed manifolds. I conjecture that this also holds for general closed three-manifolds.
We study a theory of finite type invariants for null-homologous knots in rational homology 3-spheres with respect to null Lagrangian-preserving surgeries. It is an analogue in the setting of the rational homology of the Goussarov-Rozansky theory for knots in integral homology 3-spheres. We give a partial combinatorial description of the graded space associated with our theory and determine some cases when this description is complete. For null-homologous knots in rational homology 3-spheres with a trivial Alexander polynomial, we show that the Kricker lift of the Kontsevich integral and the Le…
In this paper we define and investigate Z/2-homology cobordism invariants of Z/2-homology 3-spheres which turn out to be related to classical invariants of knots. As an application we show that many lens spaces have infinite order in the Z/2-homology cobordism group and we prove a lower bound for the slice genus of a knot on which integral surgery yields a given Z/2-homology sphere. We also give some new examples of 3-manifolds which cannot be obtained by integral surgery on a knot.
We describe Taylor towers for spaces of knots arising from Goodwillie-Weiss calculus of the embedding functor and extend the configuration space integrals of Bott and Taubes from spaces of knots to the stages of the towers. We show that certain combinations of integrals, indexed by trivalent diagrams, yield cohomology classes of the stages of the tower, just as they do for ordinary knots.
We examine surgery on a knot in $S^3$ to determine surgery obstructions to Seifert fibered integral homology spheres. We find such surgery obstructions using Heegaard Floer, Knot Floer homology and the mapping cone formula for computing Heegaard Floer homology of surgery on a knot. Here however, we take a different approach and use the number of singular fibers of a Seifert fibered integral homology sphere, which is the toroidal structure, to find obstructions. This approach allows us to show that genus one knots cannot yield Seifert fibered integral homology spheres with six or more singular …
Shimizu introduced a region crossing change unknotting operation for knot diagrams. As extensions, two integral region choice problems were proposed and the existences of solutions of the problems were shown for all non-trivial knot diagrams by Ahara and Suzuki, and Harada. We relate both integral region choice problems with an Alexander numbering for regions of a link diagram, and give alternative proofs of the existences of solutions for knot diagrams. We also discuss the problems on link diagrams. For each of the problems on the diagram of a two-component link, we give a necessary and suffi…
We classify which positive integral surgeries on positive torus knots bound rational homology balls. Additionally, for a given knot K we consider which cables K(p,q) admit integral surgeries that bound rational homology balls. For such cables, let S(K) be the set of corresponding rational numbers q/p. We show that S(K) is bounded for each K. Moreover, if n-surgery on K bounds a rational homology ball then n is an accumulation point for S(K).
We study which closed, connected, orientable three-manifolds $X$ containing a Klein bottle arise as integral Dehn surgery along a knot in $S^3$. Such $X$ are presentable as a gluing of the twisted $I$-bundle over the Klein bottle to a knot manifold, and we use a variety of Heegaard Floer type invariants to generate surgery obstructions. Suppose that $X$ is $8$-surgery along a genus two knot, and arises by gluing the twisted $I$-bundle over the Klein bottle to an $S^3$ knot complement. We show that $X$ is an L-space, it must be the dihedral manifold $\left(-1; \tfrac{1}{2}, \tfrac{1}{2}, \tfrac…
We construct an extension of the Kontsevich integral of knots to knotted trivalent graphs, which commutes with orientation switches, edge deletions, edge unzips, and connected sums. In 1997 Murakami and Ohtsuki [MO] first constructed such an extension, building on Drinfel'd's theory of associators. We construct a step by step definition, using elementary Kontsevich integral methods, to get a one-parameter family of corrections that all yield invariants well behaved under the graph operations above.
A `total Chern class' invariant of knots is defined. This is a universal Vassiliev invariant which is integral `on the level of Lie algebras' but it is not expressible as an integer sum of diagrams. The construction is motivated by similarities between the Kontsevich integral and the topological Chern character.
We consider the question of when a rational homology 3-sphere is rational homology cobordant to a connected sum of lens spaces. We prove that every rational homology cobordism class in the subgroup generated by lens spaces is represented by a unique connected sum of lens spaces whose first homology embeds in any other element in the same class. As a first consequence, we show that several natural maps to the rational homology cobordism group have infinite rank cokernels. Further consequences include a divisibility condition between the determinants of a connected sum of 2-bridge knots and any …
We will announce some results on the values of quantum sl_2 invariants of knots and integral homology spheres. Lawrence's universal sl_2 invariant of knots takes values in a fairly small subalgebra of the center of the h-adic version of the quantized enveloping algebra of sl_2. This implies an integrality result on the colored Jones polynomials of a knot. We define an invariant of integral homology spheres with values in a completion of the Laurent polynomial ring of one variable over the integers which specializes at roots of unity to the Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev invariants. The definition o…
We show that if a positive integral surgery on a knot K inside a homology sphere X with Seifert genus g(K) results in an induced knot K_n in X_n(K)=Y which has simple Floer homology, we should have n>=2g(K). Moreover, if X is the standard sphere, the three-manifold Y is a L-space and the Heegaard Floer homology groups of K are determined by its Alexander polynomial.
We construct cohomology classes in the space of knots by considering a bundle over this space and "integrating along the fiber" classes coming from the cohomology of configuration spaces using a Pontrjagin-Thom construction. The bundle we consider is essentially the one considered by Bott and Taubes, who integrated differential forms along the fiber to get knot invariants. By doing this "integration" homotopy-theoretically, we are able to produce integral cohomology classes. We then show how this integration is compatible with the homology operations on the space of long knots, as studied by B…
We define a Rasmussen $s$-invariant over the coefficient ring of the integers, and show how it is related to the $s$-invariants defined over a field. A lower bound for the slice genus of a knot arising from it is obtained, and we give examples of knots for which this lower bound is better than all lower bounds coming from the $s$-invariants over fields. We also compare it to the Lipshitz-Sarkar refinement related to the first Steenrod square.
Our main object of study is a certain degree-one cohomology class of the space K of long knots in R^3. We describe this class in terms of graphs and configuration space integrals, showing the vanishing of some anomalous obstructions. To show that this class is not zero, we integrate it over a cycle studied by Gramain. As a corollary, we establish a relation between this class and (R-valued) Casson's knot invariant. These are R-versions of the results which were previously proved by Teiblyum, Turchin and Vassiliev over Z/2 in a different way from ours.
We introduce a special class of knots, called global knots, in F^2 x R and we construct new isotopy invariants, called T-invariants, for global knots. Some T-invariants are of finite type but they cannot be extracted from the generalized Kontsevitch integral (which is consequently not the universal invariant of finite type for the restricted class of global knots). We prove that T-invariants separate all global knots of a certain type. As a corollary, we prove the non-invertibility of some links in S^3 without making any use of the link group.
This paper is part expository and part presentation of calculational results. The target space of the Kontsevich integral for knots is a space of diagrams; this space has various algebraic structures which are described here. These are utilized with Le's theorem on the behaviour of the Kontsevich integral under cabling and with the Melvin-Morton Theorem, to obtain, in the Kontsevich integral for torus knots, both an explicit expression up to degree five and the general coefficients of the wheel diagrams.
We review quantum field theory approach to the knot theory. Using holomorphic gauge we obtain the Kontsevich integral. It is explained how to calculate Vassiliev invariants and coefficients in Kontsevich integral in a combinatorial way which can be programmed on a computer. We discuss experimental results and temporal gauge considerations which lead to representation of Vassiliev invariants in terms of arrow diagrams. Explicit examples and computational results are presented.
This work continues the study of a homotopy-theoretic construction of the author inspired by the Bott-Taubes integrals. Bott and Taubes constructed knot invariants by integrating differential forms along the fiber of a bundle over the space of knots. Their techniques were later used by Cattaneo et al. to construct real "Vassiliev-type" cohomology classes in spaces of knots in higher-dimensional Euclidean space. By doing this integration via a Pontrjagin-Thom construction, we constructed cohomology classes in the knot space with arbitrary coefficients. We later showed that a refinement of this …
We establish a novel connection between algebraic number theory and knot theory. We show that the number of equivalence classes of integral binary quadratic forms of discriminant $t^2 - 4$ (for $t\neq \pm 2$) is equal to the number of isotopy classes of links in $\mathbb{S}^3$ with prescribed values (depending on $t$) of three classical link invariants. The equality arises from a natural algebraic correspondence between integral binary quadratic forms (of discriminant $t^2 - 4$ for $t\neq \pm 2$) and isotopy classes of links of braid index at most three. In particular, the class numbers of cer…
It is shown that a hyperbolic knot in the 3-sphere admits at most nine integral surgeries yielding 3-manifolds which are reducible or whose fundamental groups are not infinite word-hyperbolic.
Let $D$ be a diagram of an alternating knot with unknotting number one. The branched double cover of $S^3$ branched over $D$ is an L-space obtained by half integral surgery on a knot $K_D$. We denote the set of all such knots $K_D$ by $\mathcal D$. We characterize when $K_D\in \mathcal D$ is a torus knot, a satellite knot or a hyperbolic knot. In a different direction, we show that for a given $n>0$, there are only finitely many L-space knots in $\mathcal D$ with genus less than $n$.
The perturbative expression of Chern-Simons theory for links in Euclidean 3-space is a linear combination of integrals on configuration spaces. This has successively been studied by Guadagnini, Martellini and Mintchev, Bar-Natan, Kontsevich, Bott and Taubes, D. Thurston, Altschuler and Freidel, Yang and others. We give a self-contained version of this study with a new choice of compactification, and we formulate a rationality result.
We develop homological techniques for finding explicit combinatorial expressions of finite-type cohomology classes of spaces of knots in $R^n, n \ge 3,$ generalizing Polyak--Viro formulas for invariants (i.e. 0-dimensional cohomology classes) of knots in $R^3$. As the first applications we give such formulas for the (reduced mod 2) {\em generalized Teiblum--Turchin cocycle} of order 3 (which is the simplest cohomology class of {\em long knots} $R^1 \hookrightarrow R^n$ not reducible to knot invariants or their natural stabilizations), and for all integral cohomology classes of orders 1 and 2 o…
On the asymptotic expansion of various quantum invariants III: the Reshetikhin-Turaev invariants of closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds obtained by doing integral surgery along the twist knot
In a 3-manifold M, let K be a knot and R be an annulus which meets K transversely. We define the notion of the pair (R,K) being caught by a surface Q in the exterior of the link given by K and the boundary curves of R. For a caught pair (R,K), we consider the knot K^n gotten by twisting K n times along R and give a lower bound on the bridge number of K^n with respect to Heegaard splittings of M -- as a function of n, the genus of the splitting, and the catching surface Q. As a result, the bridge number of K^n tends to infinity with n. In application, we look at a family of knots K^n found by T…
The first part of this paper is a short review of the construction [dg-ga/9710001] of invariants of rational homology 3-spheres and knots in terms of configuration space integrals. The second part describes the relationship between the above construction and Kontsevich's proposal of removing one point from the rational homology sphere. Explicit formulae are computed. In the case of the "Theta" invariant, a comparison with Taubes's construction is briefly discussed.
We use the 2-loop term of the Kontsevich integral to show that there are (many) knots with trivial Alexander polynomial which don't have a Seifert surface whose genus equals the rank of the Seifert form. This is one of the first applications of the Kontsevich integral to intrinsically 3-dimensional questions in topology. Our examples contradict a lemma of Mike Freedman, and we explain what went wrong in his argument and why the mistake is irrelevant for topological knot concordance. References updated.
The Gauss self-linking integral of an unframed knot is not a knot invariant, but it can be turned into an invariant by adding a correction term which requires adding extra structure to the knot. We collect the different definitions/theorems/proofs concerning this correction term, most of which are well-known (at least as folklore) and put everything together in an accessible format. We then show simply and elegantly how these approaches coincide.
