The Gauss self-linking integral of an unframed knot is not a knot invariant, but it can be turned into an invariant by adding a correction term which requires adding extra structure to the knot. We collect the different definitions/theorems/proofs concerning this correction term, most of which are well-known (at least as folklore) and put everything together in an accessible format. We then show simply and elegantly how these approaches coincide.
For an integral homology 3-sphere embedded asymptotically flatly in an Euclidean space, we find a natural framing extending the standard trivialization on the asymptotically flat part.
In view of the self-linking invariant, the number $|K|$ of framed knots in $S^3$ with given underlying knot $K$ is infinite. In fact, the second author previously defined affine self-linking invariants and used them to show that $|K|$ is infinite for every knot in an orientable manifold unless the manifold contains a connected sum factor of $S^1\times S^2$; the knot $K$ need not be zero-homologous and the manifold is not required to be compact. We show that when $M$ is orientable, the number $|K|$ is infinite unless $K$ intersects a non-separating sphere at exactly one point, in which case $|K…
It is known that every oriented integral homology 3-sphere can be obtained from S^3 by a finite sequence of Borromean surgeries. We give an explicit formula for the variation of the Casson invariant under such a surgery move. The formula involves simple classical invariants, namely the framing, linking number and Milnor's triple linking number. A more general statement, for n independent Borromean surgeries, is also provided, which involves an additional cubic expression in some linking numbers of the surgery link.
Let K and L be disjoint closed oriented submanifolds of the n-sphere, with dimensions adding up to n-1. We define a map from their join K*L to the n-sphere whose degree up to sign equals their linking number, and then use this to find the desired linking integral.
We derive an integral formula for the linking number of two submanifolds of the n-sphere S^n, of the product S^n x R^m, and of other manifolds which appear as "nice" hypersurfaces in Euclidean space. The formulas are geometrically meaningful in that they are invariant under the action of the special orthogonal group on the ambient space.
We investigate the properties of knots in S^3 which bound Klein bottles, such that a pushoff of the knot has zero linking number with the knot, i.e. has zero framing. This is motivated by the many results in the literature regarding slice knots of genus one, for example, the existence of homologically essential zero self-linking simple closed curves on genus one Seifert surfaces for algebraically slice knots. Given a knot K bounding a Klein bottle F with zero framing, we show that J, the core of the orientation-preserving band in any disk-band form of F, has zero self-linking. We prove that su…
To each three-component link in the 3-sphere, we associate a geometrically natural characteristic map from the 3-torus to the 2-sphere, and show that the pairwise linking numbers and Milnor triple linking number that classify the link up to link homotopy correspond to the Pontryagin invariants that classify its characteristic map up to homotopy. This can be viewed as a natural extension of the familiar fact that the linking number of a two-component link in 3-space is the degree of its associated Gauss map from the 2-torus to the 2-sphere. When the pairwise linking numbers are all zero, we giv…
We introduce here explicit integral formulas for linking, twisting, writhing and helicity on the 3-sphere and in hyperbolic 3-space. These formulas, like their prototypes in Euclidean 3-space, are geometric rather than just topological, in the sense that their integrands are invariant under orientation-preserving isometries of the ambient space. They are obtained by developing and then applying a steady-state version of classical electrodynamics in these two spaces, including an explicit Biot-Savart formula for the magnetic field and a corresponding Ampere's law contained in Maxwell's equation…
We study the open string integrality invariants (LMOV invariants) for toric Calabi-Yau 3-folds with Aganagic-Vafa brane (AV-brane). In this paper, we focus on the case of the resolved conifold with one out AV-brane in any integer framing $τ$, which is the large $N$ duality of the Chern-Simons theory for a framed unknot with integer framing $τ$ in $S^3$. We compute the explicit formulas for the LMOV invariants in genus $g=0$ with any number of holes, and prove their integrality. For the higher genus LMOV invariants with one hole, they are reformulated into a generating function $g_{m}(q,a)$, an…
In this first of two papers, we develop a steady-state version of classical electrodynamics on the 3-sphere and in hyperbolic 3-space, including an explicit formula for the vector-valued Green's operator, an explicit formula of Biot-Savart type for the magnetic field, and a corresponding Ampere's Law contained in Maxwell's equations. We then use this to obtain explicit integral formulas for the linking number of two disjoint closed curves in these spaces. All the formulas, like their prototypes in Euclidean 3-space, are geometric rather than just topological, in the sense that their integrands…
Let M be a closed oriented 3-manifold with first Betti number one. Its equivariant linking pairing may be seen as a two-dimensional cohomology class in an appropriate infinite cyclic covering of the space of ordered pairs of distinct points of M. We show how to define the equivariant cube Q(K) of this Blanchfield pairing with respect to a framed knot K that generates H_1(M)/Torsion. This article is devoted to the study of the invariant Q. We prove many properties for this invariant including two surgery formulae. Via surgery, the invariant Q is equivalent to an invariant of null-homologous kno…
We describe a new approach to triple linking invariants and integrals, aiming for a simpler, wider and more natural applicability to the search for higher order helicities of fluid flows and magnetic fields. To each three-component link in Euclidean 3-space, we associate a geometrically natural generalized Gauss map from the 3-torus to the 2-sphere, and show that the pairwise linking numbers and Milnor triple linking number that classify the link up to link homotopy correspond to the Pontryagin invariants that classify its generalized Gauss map up to homotopy. This can be viewed as a natural e…
In this manuscript we define Vassiliev measures of complexity for open curves in 3-space. These are related to the coefficients of the enhanced Jones polynomial of open curves in 3-space. These Vassiliev measures are continuous functions of the curve coordinates and as the ends of the curve tend to coincide, they converge to the corresponding Vassiliev invariants of the resulting knot. We focus on the second Vassiliev measure from the enhanced Jones polynomial for closed and open curves in 3-space. For closed curves, this second Vassiliev measure can be computed by a Gauss code diagram and it …
We obtain explicit, isometry-invariant integral formulas for twisting, writhing and helicity, and prove the theorem LINK = TWIST + WRITHE on the 3-sphere and in hyperbolic 3-space. We then use these results to derive upper bounds for the helicity of vector fields and lower bounds for the first eigenvalue of the curl operator on subdomains of these two spaces.
Three-component links in the 3-dimensional sphere were classified up to link homotopy by John Milnor in his senior thesis, published in 1954. A complete set of invariants is given by the pairwise linking numbers p, q and r of the components, and by the residue class of one further integer mu, the "triple linking number" of the title, which is well-defined modulo the greatest common divisor of p, q and r. To each such link L we associate a geometrically natural characteristic map g_L from the 3-torus to the 2-sphere in such a way that link homotopies of L become homotopies of g_L. Maps of the 3…
The Thurston-Bennequin invariant provides one notion of self-linking for any homologically-trivial Legendrian curve in a contact three-manifold. Here we discuss related analytic notions of self-linking for Legendrian knots in Euclidean space. Our definition is based upon a reformulation of the elementary Gauss linking integral and is motivated by ideas from supersymmetric gauge theory. We recover the Thurston-Bennequin invariant as a special case.
Let M be a closed oriented 3-manifold with first Betti number one. Its equivariant linking pairing may be seen as a two-dimensional cohomology class in an appropriate infinite cyclic covering of the configuration space of ordered pairs of distinct points of M. We show how to define the equivariant cube Q(M,K) of this Blanchfield pairing with respect to a framed knot K that generates H_1(M;Z)/Torsion. We present the invariant Q(M,K) and some of its properties including a surgery formula. Via surgery, the invariant Q is equivalent to an invariant Q' of null-homologous knots in rational homology …
Assume that Γ_{v_0} is a tree with vertex set Vert(Γ_{v_0})={v_0, v_1,..., v_n}, and with an integral framing (weight) attached to each vertex except v_0. Assume furthermore that the intersection matrix of G=Γ_{v_0}-{v_0} is negative definite. We define a filtration on the chain complex computing the lattice homology of G and show how to use this information in computing lattice homology groups of a negative definite graph we get by attaching some framing to v_0. As a simple application we produce families of graphs which have arbitrarily many bad vertices for which the lattice homology groups…
In 1833 Gauss defined the linking number of two disjoint curves in 3-space. For open curves this double integral over the parameterised curves is real-valued and invariant modulo rigid motions or isometries that preserve distances between points, and has been recently used in the elucidation of molecular structures. In 1976 Banchoff geometrically interpreted the linking number between two line segments. An explicit analytic formula based on this interpretation was given in 2000 without proof in terms of 6 isometry invariants: the distance and angle between the segments and 4 coordinates specif…
Bott and Taubes constructed knot invariants by integrating differential forms along the fiber of a bundle over the space of knots, generalizing the Gauss linking integral. Their techniques were later used to construct real cohomology classes in spaces of knots and links in higher-dimensional Euclidean spaces. In previous work, we constructed cohomology classes in knot spaces with arbitrary coefficients by integrating via a Pontrjagin--Thom construction. We carry out a similar construction over the space of string links, but with a refinement in which configuration spaces are glued together acc…
We study Heegaard Floer homology and various related invariants (such as the $h$-function) for two-component L-space links with linking number zero. For such links, we explicitly describe the relationship between the $h$-function, the Sato-Levine invariant and the Casson invariant. We give a formula for the Heegaard Floer $d$-invariants of integral surgeries on two-component L-space links of linking number zero in terms of the $h$-function, generalizing a formula of Ni and Wu. As a consequence, for such links with unknotted components, we characterize L-space surgery slopes in terms of the $ν^…
We introduce and study so-called self-indexed graphs. These are (oriented) finite graphs endowed with a map from the set of edges to the set of vertices. Such graphs naturally arise from classical knot and link diagrams. In fact, the graphs resulting from link diagrams have an additional structure, an integral flow. We call a self-indexed graph with integral flow a comte. The analogy with links allows us to define transformations of comtes generalizing the Reidemeister moves on link diagrams. We show that many invariants of links can be generalized to comtes, most notably the linking number, t…
We develop new algebraic methods refining the Witt group of linking forms and Ranicki's torsion algebraic L-groups into double Witt groups and double L-groups. At each prime ideal of the underlying ring, our double Witt groups capture infinitely many more integral signatures of the linking form than the single Witt groups. The double L-groups are an algebraic theory of `double cobordism', refining L-theory analogously. We exhibit an exact sequence relating the double L-groups to classical projective L-theory via a double homology surgery obstruction group. The algebraic techniques are applied …
A holonomic knot is a knot in 3-space which arises as the 2-jet extension of a smooth function on the circle. A holonomic knot associated to a generic function is naturally framed by the blackboard framing of the knot diagram associated to the 1-jet extension of the function. There are two classical invariants of framed knot diagrams: the Whitney index (rotation number) W and the self linking number S. For a framed holonomic knot we show that W is bounded above by the negative of the braid index of the knot, and that the sum of W and |S| is bounded by the negative of the Euler characteristic o…
This work continues the study of a homotopy-theoretic construction of the author inspired by the Bott-Taubes integrals. Bott and Taubes constructed knot invariants by integrating differential forms along the fiber of a bundle over the space of knots. Their techniques were later used by Cattaneo et al. to construct real "Vassiliev-type" cohomology classes in spaces of knots in higher-dimensional Euclidean space. By doing this integration via a Pontrjagin-Thom construction, we constructed cohomology classes in the knot space with arbitrary coefficients. We later showed that a refinement of this …
We consider the general nonvanishing, divergence-free vector fields defined on a domain in three space and tangent to its boundary. Based on the theory of finite type invariants, we define a family of invariants for such fields, in the style of Arnold's asymptotic linking number. Our approach is based on the configuration space integrals due to Bott and Taubes.
The Bott-Cattaneo-Rossi invariant $(Z_k)_{k\in \mathbb N\setminus\{0,1\}}$ is an invariant of long knots $\mathbb R^n\hookrightarrow\mathbb R^{n+2}$ for odd $n$, which reads as a combination of integrals over configuration spaces. In this article, we compute such integrals and prove explicit formulas for (generalized) $Z_k$ in terms of Alexander polynomials, or in terms of linking numbers of some cycles of a hypersurface bounded by the knot. Our formulas, which hold for all null-homologous long knots in homology $\mathbb R^{n+2}$ at least when $n\equiv 1\mod 4$, conversely express the Reidemei…
