Let Y be an infinite covering space of a projective manifold M in P^N of dimension n geq 2. Let C be the intersection with M of at most n-1 generic hypersurfaces of degree d in P^N. The preimage X of C in Y is a connected submanifold. Let phi be the smoothed distance from a fixed point in Y in a metric pulled up from M. Let O_phi(X) be the Hilbert space of holomorphic functions f on X such that f^2 e^(-phi) is integrable on X, and define O_phi(Y) similarly. Our main result is that (under more general hypotheses than described here) the restriction O_phi(Y) to O_phi(X) is an isomorphism for d large enough.
This yields new examples of Riemann surfaces and domains of holomorphy in C^n with corona. We consider the important special case when Y is the unit ball B in C^n, and show that for d large enough, every bounded holomorphic function on X extends to a unique function in the intersection of all the nontrivial weighted Bergman spaces on B. Finally, assuming that the covering group is arithmetic, we establish three dichotomies concerning the extension of bounded holomorphic and harmonic functions from X to B.
In this paper we prove an extension of a result of Gromov, Henkin and Shubin [GHS] on holomorphic L_{2} functions on coverings of strongly pseudoconvex manifolds.
We apply the methods developed in [Br1] to study holomorphic functions of slow growth on coverings of pseudoconvex domains in Stein manifolds. In particular, we extend and strengthen certain results of Gromov, Henkin and Shubin [GHS] on holomorphic L^{2} functions on coverings of pseudoconvex manifolds in the case of coverings of Stein manifolds.
In this paper we will show how to construct holomorphic L^{p}-functions on unbranched coverings of strongly pseudoconvex manifolds. Also, we prove some extension and approximation theorems for such functions.
This article generalizes the result of Katzarkov and Ramachandran from algebraic surfaces to Kähler surfaces. We follow their argument to prove the holomorphic convexity of a reductive Galois covering over a compact Kähler surface which does not have two ends, except that we replace the $p$-adic factorization theorem by an analysis of the singularities of the continuous subanalytic plurisubharmonic exhaustion function.
Let M be a projective manifold, p:M_{G} --> M a regular covering over M with a free abelian transformation group G. We describe holomorphic functions on M_{G} of an exponential growth with respect to the distance defined by a metric pulled back from M. As a corollary we obtain for such functions Cartwright and Liouville type theorems. Our approach brings together L_{2} cohomology technique for holomorphic vector bundles on complete Kähler manifolds and geometric properties of projective manifolds.
The classical integral representation formulas for holomorphic functions defined on pseudoconvex domains in Stein manifolds play an important role in the constructive theory of functions of several complex variables. In this paper we construct similar formulas for cetain classes of holomorphic functions defined on coverings of such domains.
We establish basic results of complex function theory within certain algebras of holomorphic functions on coverings of Stein manifolds (such as algebras of Bohr's holomorphic almost periodic functions on tube domains or algebras of all fibrewise bounded holomorphic functions arising, e.g., in the corona problem for $H^\infty$). In particular, in this context we obtain results on holomorphic extension from complex submanifolds, properties of divisors, corona type theorems, holomorphic analogues of the Peter-Weyl approximation theorem, Hartogs type theorems, characterizations of uniqueness sets,…
We develop complex function theory within certain algebras of holomorphic functions on coverings of Stein manifolds. This, in particular, includes the results on holomorphic extension from complex submanifolds, corona type theorems, properties of divisors, holomorphic analogs of the Peter-Weyl approximation theorem, Hartogs type theorems, characterization of uniqueness sets. The model examples of these algebras are: (1) Bohr's algebra of holomorphic almost periodic functions on tube domains; (2) algebra of all fibrewise bounded holomorphic functions (e.g., arising in the corona problem for $H^…
The goal of this paper is to generalize Demailly's asymptotic holomorphic Morse inequalities to the case of a covering manifold of a compact manifold. We shall obtain estimates which involve Atiyah's ``normalized dimension'' of the square integrable harmonic spaces. The techniques used are those of Shubin who gave a proof for the usual Morse inequalities in the presence of a group action relying on Witten ideas. As a consequence we obtain estimates for the dimension of the square integrable holomorphic sections of the pull-back of a line bundle on the base manifold under some mild hypothesis f…
We study a tower of normal coverings over a compact Kähler manifold with holomorphic line bundles. When the line bundle is sufficiently positive, we obtain an effective estimate, which implies the Bergman stability. As a consequence, we deduce the equidistribution for zero currents of random holomorphic sections. Furthermore, we obtain a variance estimate for those random zero currents, which yields the almost sure convergence under some geometric condition.
A manifold $M$ is locally conformally Kahler (LCK) if it admits a Kahler covering with monodromy acting by holomorphic homotheties. Let $M$ be an LCK manifold admitting a holomorphic conformal flow of diffeomorphisms, lifted to a non-isometric homothetic flow on its covering. We show that $M$ admits an automorphic potential. This version was added 10 years after publication to correct some errors in the original.
A vector bundle $E$ over a projective variety $M$ is called finite if it satisfies a nontrivial polynomial equation with nonnegative integral coefficients. Introducing finite bundles, Nori proved that $E$ is finite if and only if the pullback of $E$ to some finite étale covering of $M$ is trivializable \cite{No1}. The definition of finite bundles extends naturally to holomorphic vector bundles over compact complex manifolds. We prove that a holomorphic vector bundle over a compact complex manifold $M$ is finite if and only if the pullback of $E$ to some finite étale covering of $M$ is holomorp…
We prove that the Bass stable rank of the algebra of bounded holomorphic functions on an unbranched covering of a finite bordered Riemann surface is equal to one.
It is well known that a ramified holomorphic covering of a closed unitary disc by another such a disc is given by a finite Blaschke product. The inverse is also true. In this note we give an explicit description of holomorphic ramified coverings of a disc by other bordered Riemann surfaces. The problem of covering a disc by an annulus arises e.g. in multidimensional complex analysis; we show that it may be effectively solved in terms of elliptic theta functions. The covering of a disc by a flat domain is discussed in a monograph by Goluzin. The machinery used here strongly resembles the descri…
We exhibit an example of covering surface of C*, arising from analytical continuation of a holomorphic germ and failing to be a topological covering, due to singular points and regular ones being projected over the same slits in C*.
For a holomorphic one-form $\mathbfξ$ on a weakly 1-complete manifold $X$ with certain properties, we discussed the connectivity of the pair $(\hat{X}, F^{-1}(z))$, where $π: \hat{X} \to X$ is a covering map and $dF=π^*\mathbfξ$. We also discussed the criteria about when such a manifold $X$ admits a proper holomorphic mapping onto a Riemann surface.
In this paper, we generalize the Kobayashi pseudo-distance to complex manifolds which admit holomorphic bracket generating distributions. The generalization is based on Chow's theorem in sub-Riemannian geometry. Let G be a linear semisimple Lie group. For a complex $G$-homogeneous manifold M with a G-invariant holomorphic bracket generating distribution D, we prove that (M,D) is Kobayashi hyperbolic if and only if the universal covering of M is a canonical flag domain and the induced distribution is the superhorizontal distribution.
We prove an analog of the classical Hartogs extension theorem for CR $L^{2}$ functions defined on boundaries of certain (possibly unbounded) domains on coverings of strongly pseudoconvex manifolds. Our result is related to a problem posed in the paper of Gromov, Henkin and Shubin [GHS] on holomorphic $L_{2}$ functions on coverings of pseudoconvex manifolds.
Let X be a compact connected Kaehler manifold such that the holomorphic tangent bundle TX is numerically effective. A theorem of Demailly, Peternell and Schenider says that there is a finite unramified Galois covering M --> X, a complex torus T, and a holomorphic surjective submersion f: M --> T, such that the fibers of f are Fano manifolds with numerically effective tangent bundle. A conjecture of Campana and Peternell says that the fibers of f are rational and homogeneous. Assume that X admits a holomorphic Cartan geometry. We prove that the fibers of f are rational homogeneous varieties. We…
Let $X$ be an elliptic curve and $\mathbb{P}$ the Riemann sphere. Since $X$ is compact, it is a deep theorem of Douady that the set $\mathcal{O}(X,\mathbb{P})$ consisting of holomorphic maps $X\to \mathbb{P}$ admits a complex structure. If $R_n$ denotes the set of maps of degree $n$, then Namba has shown for $n\geq2$ that $R_n$ is a $2n$-dimensional complex manifold. We study holomorphic flexibility properties of the spaces $R_2$ and $R_3$. Firstly, we show that $R_2$ is homogeneous and hence an Oka manifold. Secondly, we present our main theorem, that there is a $6$-sheeted branched covering …
Metrics of constant negative curvature on a compact Riemann surface are critical points of the Liouville action functional, which in recent constructions is rigorously defined as a class in a Cech-de Rham complex with respect to a suitable covering of the surface. We show that this class is the square of the metrized holomorphic tangent bundle in hermitian-holomorphic Deligne cohomology. We achieve this by introducing a different version of the hermitian-holomorphic Deligne complex which is nevertheless quasi-isomorphic to the one introduced by Brylinski in his construction of Quillen line bun…
Let f_1, f_2 be holomorphic endomorphisms of P^k, of degrees d_1\geq 2, d_2\geq 2. Assume that f_1\circ f_2=f_2\circ f_1 and that d_1^{n_1}\not =d_2^{n_2} for all integers n_1, n_2. We then show that f_j are critically finite. Moreover there is an orbifold (P^k,n) such that f_1, f_2 are coverings of (P^k,n). In the P^2 case we give the list of commuting pairs satisfying the above conditions.
Let $M$ be a non-compact connected Riemann surface of finite type, and $R\subset\subset M$ be a relatively compact domain such that $H_{1}(M,\Z)=H_{1}(R,\Z)$. Let $\tilde R\longrightarrow R$ be a covering. We study the algebra $H^{\infty}(U)$ of bounded holomorphic functions defined in some domains $U\subset\tilde R$. Our main result is a Forelli type theorem on projections in $H^{\infty}(\Di)$.
Holomorphic (nondegenerate) mappings between complex manifolds of the same dimension are of special interest. For example, they appear as coverings of complex manifolds. At the same time they have very strong "extra" extension properties in compare with mappings in different dimensions. The aim of this paper is to put together the known results on this subject, give some perspective on the general strategy for future progress, prove some new results and formulate open questions.
A manifold M is locally conformally Kahler (LCK) if it admits a Kahler covering with monodromy acting by holomorphic homotheties. For a compact connected group G acting on an LCK manifold by holomorphic automorphisms, an averaging procedure gives a G-invariant LCK metric. Suppose that U(1) acts on an LCK manifold M by holomorphic isometries, and the lifting of this action to the Kahler cover of M is not isometric. We show that the cover admits an automorphic Kahler potential, and hence can be embedded to a Hopf manifold.
The density property for a Stein manifold X implies that the group of holomorphic diffeomorphisms of X is infinite-dimensional and, in a certain well-defined sense, as large as possible. We prove that if G is a complex semisimple Lie group of adjoint type and K is a reductive subgroup, then G/K has the density property. This theorem is a non-trivial extension of an earlier result of ours, which handles the case of complex semi-simple Lie groups. We also establish the density property for some other complex homogeneous spaces by ad hoc methods. Finally, we introduce a lifting method that extend…
The algebra $H^\infty(D)$ of bounded holomorphic functions on $D\subset\mathbb C$ is projective free for a wide class of infinitely connected domains. In particular, for such $D$ every rectangular left-invertible matrix with entries in $H^\infty(D)$ can be extended in this class of matrices to an invertible square matrix (the generalization of the corona theorem for $H^\infty(D)$). This follows from a new result on the structure of the maximal ideal space of $H^\infty(D)$ asserting that its covering dimension is $2$ and the second Čech cohomology group is trivial.
In this report we construct a family of holomorphic functions $β_{λ,μ} (s)$ which behave asymptotically like iterated exponentials as $|s| \to \infty$ in the right half plane. Each $β_{λ,μ}$ satisfies a convenient functional relationship with nested exponentials; and has a series expansion that converges in a half-plane. They provide a nearness to the dynamics of the map $e^{μz} : \mathbb{C}\to\mathbb{C}$ and behave asymptotically as a fractional iteration would behave. These objects are used to describe the various orbits of the exponential function. We describe where Abel equations are feasi…
Beauville asked if a compact Kähler manifold with split tangent bundle has a universal covering that is a product of manifolds. We use Mori theory and elementary results about holomorphic foliations to study this problem for projective uniruled varieties. In particular we obtain an affirmative answer for rationally connected varieties in any dimension and uniruled varieties in dimension 4.
In Ahlfors' covering surface theory, it is well known that there exists a positive constant $h$ such that for any nonconstant holomorphic mapping $f:% \barΔ\to S,$ if $f(Δ)\cap \{0,1,\infty \}=\emptyset ,$ then% A(f,Δ)\leq hL(f,\partial Δ),% where $Δ$ is the disk $|z|<1$ in $\mathbb{C},$ $S$ is the unit Riemann sphere, $A(f,Δ)$ is the area of the image of $Δ$ and $% L(f,\partial Δ)$ is the length of the image of $\partial Δ$, both counting multiplicities. In this paper, we will show that the best lower bound for $h$ is the number h_{0}=\max_{τ\in \lbrack 0,1]}[ \frac{\sqrt{1+τ^{2}}(π+\arcsin τ…
Let Y be a regular covering of a complex projective manifold M\hookrightarrow CP^{N} of dimension n\geq 2. Let C be intersection with M of at most n-1 generic hypersurfaces of degree d in CP^{N}. The preimage X of C in Y is a connected submanifold. Let H^{\infty}(Y) and H^{\infty}(X) be the Banach spaces of bounded holomorphic functions on Y and X in the corresponding supremum norms. We prove that the restriction H^{\infty}(Y)\longrightarrow H^{\infty}(X) is an isometry for d large enough. This answers the question posed in [L] by F. Larusson and strengthen his example of the Riemann surface w…
We study the harmonic space of line bundle valued forms over a covering manifold with a discrete group action $Γ$, and obtain an asymptotic estimate for the $Γ$-dimension of the harmonic space with respect to the tensor times $k$ in the holomorphic line bundle $L^{k}\otimes E$ and the type $(n,q)$ of the differential form, when $L$ is semipositive. In particular, we estimate the $Γ$-dimension of the corresponding reduced $L^2$-Dolbeault cohomology group. Essentially, we obtain a local estimate of the pointwise norm of harmonic forms with valued in semipositive line bundles over Hermitian manif…
A locally conformally Kaehler (LCK) manifold is a complex manifold admitting a Kaehler covering M, with monodromy acting on M by Kaehler homotheties. A compact LCK manifold is Vaisman if it admits a holomorphic flow acting by non-trivial homotheties on M. We prove a non-Kaehler analogue of Kodaira embedding theorem: any compact Vaisman manifold admits a natural holomorphic immersion to a Hopf manifold. As an application, we obtain that any Sasakian manifold has a contact immersion to an odd-dimensional sphere.
We study the Kähler geometry of the classical Hurwitz space $\mathcal{H}^{n,b}$ of simple branched coverings of the Riemann sphere $\mathbb{P}^1$ by compact hyperbolic Riemann surfaces. A generalized Weil-Petersson metric on the Hurwitz space was recently introduced. Deformations of simple branched coverings fit into the more general framework of Horikawa's deformation theory of holomorphic maps, which we equip with distinguished representatives in the presence of hermitian metrics. In the article we will investigate the curvature of the generalized Weil-Petersson Kähler metric on the Hurwitz …
In this paper we prove results on the existence and homotopy classification of holomorphic submersions from Stein manifolds to other complex manifolds. We say that a complex manifold Y satisfies Property S_n for some integer n bigger or equal the dimension of Y if every holomorphic submersion from a compact convex set in C^n of a certain special type to Y can be uniformly approximated by holomorphic submersions from C^n to Y. Assuming this condition we prove the following. A continuous map f from an n-dimensional Stein manifold X to Y is homotopic to a holomorphic submersions of X to Y if and …
The classical result of J.J. Kohn asserts that over a relatively compact subdomain $D$ with $C^\infty$ boundary of a Hermitian manifold whose Levi form has at least $n-q$ positive eigenvalues or at least $q+1$ negative eigenvalues at each boundary point, there are natural isomorphisms between the $(p,q)$ Dolbeault cohomology groups defined by means of $C^\infty$ up to the boundary differential forms on $D$ and the (finite-dimensional) spaces of harmonic $(p,q)$-forms on $D$ determined by the corresponding complex Laplace operator. In the present paper, using Kohn's technique, we give a similar…
In the paper we prove a factorization theorem for representations of fundamental groups of compact Kähler manifolds ({\em Kähler groups}) into solvable matrix groups. We apply this result to prove that the universal covering of a compact Kähler manifold with a residually solvable fundamental group is holomorphically convex.
We prove that every Kaehler solvmanifold has a finite covering whose holomorphic reduction is a principal bundle. An example is given that illustrates the necessity, in general, of passing to a proper covering. We also answer a stronger version of a question posed by Akhiezer for homogeneous spaces of nonsolvable algebraic groups in the case where the isotropy has the property that its intersection with the radical is Zariski dense in the radical.
The logarithmic Riemann surface Sigma_{log} is a classical holomorphic 1-manifold. It lives into R^4 and induces a covering space of C - 0 defined by exp. This paper suggests a geometric construction of it, derived as the limit of a sequence of vector fields extending exp suitably to embeddings of C into R^3, which turn to be helicoid surfaces living into C x R. In the limit we obtain a bijective complex exponential on the covering space in question, and thus a well-defined complex logarithm. In addition, the helicoids are diffeomorphic (not bi-holomorphic) copies of Sigma_{log} as smooth real…
Let G/K be a non-compact, rank-one, Riemannian symmetric space and let G^C be the universal complexification of G. We prove that a holomorphically separable, G-equivariant Riemann domain over G^C / K^C is necessarily univalent, provided that G is not a covering of SL(2, R). As a consequence of the above statement one obtains a univalence result for holomorphically separable, G x K -equivariant Riemann domains over G^C. Here G x K acts on G^C by left and right translations. The proof of such results involves a detailed study of the G-invariant complex geometry of the quotient G^C / K^C, includi…
In this article, we consider a bounded pseudoconvex domain in ${\bf C}^2$ satifying: (a) it admits a proper holomorphic mapping $f$ onto the unit ball $B^2$, and (b) it is simply connected and has a real analytic boundary. According to [Barletta-Bedford, Indiana U. Math. J, 39(1985), 315-338], the strong pseudconvexity of $B^2$ alone yields that such a domain is "weakly spherical" at the boundary points that are at the same time a smooth point of the branch locus $Z_{df} = \{\det(J_{\bf C} f) = 0\}$. (Notice that [Diederich-Fornaess, Math. Ann., 282 (1988), 681-700] implies that $f$ as well as…
We study nonlinear resolvents of holomorphic generators of one-parameter semigroups acting in the open unit disk. The class of nonlinear resolvents can be studied in the framework of geometric function theory because it consists of univalent functions. In this paper we establish distortion and covering results, find order of starlikeness and of strong starlikeness of resolvents. This provides that any resolvent admits quasiconformal extension to the complex plane $\C$. In addition, we obtain some characteristics of semigroups generated by these resolvents.
This is a course of lectures given for students of the Regional Mathematical Center of the Novosibirsk State University from October 20 to November 3, 2017. The course is devoted to some geometric problems of ramified coverings of the Riemann sphere. A special attention is payed to compact surfaces of genus one (complex tori). In the first section we give a short introduction to the theory of elliptic functions. Section 2 is devoted to one-parametric families of holomorphic and meromorphic functions. We recall the role of such families on Loewner's equation in solving some problems of the theo…
Let C be a curve in a compact Kahler surface Y. Assume that the self-intersection of C is vanishing, and the image of the fundamental group of C in Y is of infinite index in the fundamental group of Y. Does it follow that C is a fiber of a holomorphic map from Y to a curve ? We give, in some cases, a positive answer to the question. Our strategy is to solve a Poincare-Lelong equation on some infinite covering of Y.
