In this article, we consider a bounded pseudoconvex domain in ${\bf C}^2$ satifying:
(a) it admits a proper holomorphic mapping $f$ onto the unit ball $B^2$, and
(b) it is simply connected and has a real analytic boundary.
According to [Barletta-Bedford, Indiana U. Math. J, 39(1985), 315-338], the strong pseudconvexity of $B^2$ alone yields that such a domain is "weakly spherical" at the boundary points that are at the same time a smooth point of the branch locus $Z_{df} = \{\det(J_{\bf C} f) = 0\}$. (Notice that [Diederich-Fornaess, Math. Ann., 282 (1988), 681-700] implies that $f$ as well as $Z_{df}$ extends holomorphically across the boundaries.)
Our main contribution in this paper is that we have discovered a stronger rigidity (both local and global) in case the target domain is the unit ball. The main results are:
THEOREM ("Local Rigidity"): Let $(M,o)$ be a real analytic normalized weakly spherical pointed CR hypersurface in ${\bf C}^2$ of order $k_0 > 1$. Let $(Σ, o)$ be the pointed Siegel hypersurface given by the defining equation $Re w - |z|^2 = 0$. If there is a holomorphic mapping $F:(M,o) \to (Σ,o)$ for which $o$ is a regular branch point, then
(1) $(M,o)$ is defined by the equation $Re w - |z|^{2k_0} = 0$, and
(2) $F(z,w)$ is equivalent to $(z,w) \mapsto (z^{k_0},w)$ up to a composition with elements in $Aut (M,o)$ and $Aut (Σ,o)$.
THEOREM ("Global Rigidity"): Let $D$ and $f:D \to B^2$ be as above, and let $f$ be generically $m$-to-1. Assume that its branch locus $Z_{df}$ admits an analytic component $V$ with the following properties:
(1) $f$ is locally a $m$-to-1 branched covering with branch locus $V$ at every point of $V \cap \partial D$;
(2) $V \cap \partial D$ is connected and contains no singular point of the variety $Z_{df}$.
Then $D$ is biholomorphic to $E_m = \{|z|^{2m} + |w|^2 < 1\}$.
Cartan-Thullen theorem is a basic one in the theory of analytic functions of several complex variables. It states that for any open set $U$ of ${\mathbb C}^k$, the following conditions are equivalent: (a) $U$ is a domain of existence, (b) $U$ is a domain of holomorphy and (c) $U$ is holomorphically convex. On the other hand, when $f \, (\, =(f_1,f_2,\cdots,f_n)\, )$ is a $\mathbb C^n$-valued function on an open set $U$ of $\mathbb C^{k_1}\times\mathbb C^{k_2}\times\cdots\times\mathbb C^{k_n}$, $f$ is said to be $\mathbb C^n$-analytic, if $f$ is complex analytic and for any $i$ and $j$, $i\not=…
We show that several spaces of holomorphic functions on a Riemann domain over a Banach space, including the nuclear and Hilbert-Schmidt bounded type, are locally $m$-convex Fréchet algebras. We prove that the spectrum of these algebras has a natural analytic structure, which we use to characterize the envelope of holomorphy. We also show a Cartan-Thullen type theorem.
In this article we deduce some algebraic properties for the group $\mathrm{Sp}_{2n} (\mathcal{O}(X))$ of holomorphic symplectic matrices on a Stein space $X$: holomorphic factorization, exponential factorization, and Kazhdan's property (T). In holomorphic factorization we combine a recent result of the third author and K-theory tools to give explicit bounds for the case when $X$ is one-dimensional or two-dimensional. Next we use them to find bounds for exponential factorization. As a further application, we show that the elementary symplectic group $\mathrm{Ep}_{2n}(\mathcal{O}(X))$ admits Kaz…
We solve Gromov's Vaserstein problem. Namely, we show that a null-homotopic holomorphic mapping from a finite dimensional reduced Stein space into SL_n(C) can be factored into a finite product of unipotent matrices with holomorphic entries.
We estimate the number of unipotent elements needed to factor a null-homotopic holomorphic map from a finite dimensional reduced Stein spaces $X$ into $\text{SL}_2(\mathbb{C})$.
We show that any element of the special linear group $SL_2(R)$ is a product of two exponentials if the ring $R$ is either the ring of holomorphic functions on an open Riemann surface or the disc algebra. This is sharp: one exponential factor is not enough since the exponential map corresponding to $SL_2(\mathbb{C})$ is not surjective. Our result extends to the linear group $GL_2(R)$.
For a quasi-Fuchsian group $\Ga$ with ordinary set $Ω$, and $Δ_{n}$ the Laplacian on \n differentials on $\Ga\bkΩ$, we define a notion of a Bers dual basis $ϕ_{1},...c,ϕ_{2d}$ for $\kerΔ_{n}$. We prove that $\detΔ_{n}/\det <ϕ_{j},ϕ_{k}>$, is, up to an anomaly computed by Takhtajan and the second author in \cite{TT1}, the modulus squared of a holomorphic function F(n), where F(n) is a quasi-Fuchsian analogue of the Selberg zeta Z(n). This generalizes the D'Hoker-Phong formula $\detΔ_{n}=c_{g,n}Z(n)$, and is a quasi-Fuchsian counterpart of the result for Schottky groups proved by Takhtajan and t…
This paper considers some work done by the author and Catlin [CD1,CD2,CD3] concerning positivity conditions for bihomogeneous polynomials and metrics on bundles over certain complex manifolds. It presents a simpler proof of a special case of the main result in [CD3], providing also a self-contained proof of a generalization of the main result from [CD1]. Some new examples and applications appear here as well. The idea is to use the Bergman kernel function and some operator theory to prove purely algebraic theorems about matrices of polynomials. Theorem 1. [Catlin-D'Angelo]. Suppose that $f$ is…
We prove that the pointwise product of two holomorphic functions of the upper half-plane, one in the Hardy space $\mathcal H^1$, the other one in its dual, belongs to a Hardy type space. Conversely, every holomorphic function in this space can be written as such a product. This generalizes previous characterization in the context of the unit disc.
It is shown that any symplectic $2n\times 2n$-matrix, whose entries are complex holomorphic functions on a reduced Stein space, can be decomposed into a finite product of elementary symplectic matrices if and only if it is null-homotopic. Moreover, if this is the case, the number of factors can be bounded by a constant depending only on $n$ and the dimension of the space.
For a family of compact Riemann surfaces X_t of genus g>1 parametrized by the Schottky space S_g, we define a natural basis for the holomorphic n-differentials on X_t which varies holomorphically with t and generalizes the basis of normalized abelian differentials of the first kind for n=1. We introduce a holomorphic function F(n) on S_g which generalizes the classical product \prod(1-q^m)^2 appearing in the Dedekind eta function for n=1 and g=1. We prove a holomorphic factorization formula expressing the regularized determinant of the Laplacian as a product of |F(n)|^2, a holomorphic anomaly …
Let $f$ be a harmonic map from a Riemann surface to a Riemannian $n$-manifold. We prove that if there is a holomorphic diffeomorphism $h$ between open subsets of the surface such that $f\circ h = f$, then $f$ factors through a holomorphic map onto another Riemann surface. If such $h$ is anti-holomorphic, we obtain an analogous statement. For minimal maps, this result is well known and is a consequence of the theory of branched immersions of surfaces due to Gulliver-Osserman-Royden. Our proof relies on various geometric properties of the Hopf differential.
Applying a linearization theorem due to J. Mujica, we study the ideals of bounded holomorphic mappings $\mathcal{H}^\infty\circ\mathcal{I}$ generated by composition with an operator ideal $\mathcal{I}$. The bounded-holomorphic dual ideal of $\mathcal{I}$ is introduced and its elements are characterized as those that admit a factorization through $\mathcal{I}^\mathrm{dual}$. For complex Banach spaces $E$ and $F$, we also analyze new ideals of bounded holomorphic mappings from an open subset $U\subseteq E$ to $F$ such as $p$-integral holomorphic mappings and $p$-nuclear holomorphic mappings with…
We study the holomorphic Hardy-Orlicz spaces H^Φ(Ω), where Ωis the unit ball or, more generally, a convex domain of finite type or a strictly pseudoconvex domain in Cn . The function Φis in particular such that H ^1(Ω) \subset H^Φ(Ω) \subset H ^p (Ω) for some p > 0. We develop for them maximal characterizations, atomic and molecular decompositions. We then prove weak factorization theorems involving the space BMOA(Omega). As a consequence, we characterize those Hankel operators which are bounded from H ^Φ(Ω) into H^1 (Ω).
Let $R$ be a commutative unital ring. A well-known factorization problem is whether any matrix in $\mathrm{SL}_n(R)$ is a product of elementary matrices with entries in $R$. To solve the problem, we use two approaches based on the notion of the Bass stable rank and on construction of a null-homotopy. Special attention is given to the case, where $R$ is a ring or Banach algebra of holomorphic functions. Also, we consider a related problem on representation of a matrix in $\mathrm{GL}_n(R)$ as a product of exponentials.
We apply concepts and tools from abstract homotopy theory to complex analysis and geometry, continuing our development of the idea that the Oka Principle is about fibrancy in suitable model structures. We explicitly factor a holomorphic map between Stein manifolds through mapping cylinders in three different model structures and use these factorizations to prove implications between ostensibly different Oka properties of complex manifolds and holomorphic maps. We show that for Stein manifolds, several Oka properties coincide and are characterized by the geometric condition of ellipticity. Goin…
