This paper considers some work done by the author and Catlin [CD1,CD2,CD3] concerning positivity conditions for bihomogeneous polynomials and metrics on bundles over certain complex manifolds. It presents a simpler proof of a special case of the main result in [CD3], providing also a self-contained proof of a generalization of the main result from [CD1]. Some new examples and applications appear here as well. The idea is to use the Bergman kernel function and some operator theory to prove purely algebraic theorems about matrices of polynomials.
Theorem 1. [Catlin-D'Angelo]. Suppose that $f$ is a bihomogeneous real-valued polynomial on ${\bf C^n}$ of degree $2m$. Then $f$ is positive away from the origin if and only there is an integer $d$ and a holomorphic homogeneous polynomial mapping $A$, whose components span the space of homogeneous polynomials of degree $m+d$, such that $$ ||z||^{2d} f(z,{\overline z}) = ||A(z)||^2.$$ Suppose that $F(z,{\overline z})$ is an $r$ by $r$ matrix whose entries are bihomogeneous polynomials of degree $2m$. Then $F(z,{\overline z})$ is positive-definite at each point $z \ne 0$ if and only if there is an integer $d$ and a holomorphic homogeneous polynomial matrix $A$, whose row vectors span the space of $r$-tuples of homogeneous polynomials of degree $m+d$, such that
$$||z||^{2d} F(z,{\overline z}) = A(z)^* A(z).$$
In this article we deduce some algebraic properties for the group $\mathrm{Sp}_{2n} (\mathcal{O}(X))$ of holomorphic symplectic matrices on a Stein space $X$: holomorphic factorization, exponential factorization, and Kazhdan's property (T). In holomorphic factorization we combine a recent result of the third author and K-theory tools to give explicit bounds for the case when $X$ is one-dimensional or two-dimensional. Next we use them to find bounds for exponential factorization. As a further application, we show that the elementary symplectic group $\mathrm{Ep}_{2n}(\mathcal{O}(X))$ admits Kaz…
We solve Gromov's Vaserstein problem. Namely, we show that a null-homotopic holomorphic mapping from a finite dimensional reduced Stein space into SL_n(C) can be factored into a finite product of unipotent matrices with holomorphic entries.
We estimate the number of unipotent elements needed to factor a null-homotopic holomorphic map from a finite dimensional reduced Stein spaces $X$ into $\text{SL}_2(\mathbb{C})$.
We show that any element of the special linear group $SL_2(R)$ is a product of two exponentials if the ring $R$ is either the ring of holomorphic functions on an open Riemann surface or the disc algebra. This is sharp: one exponential factor is not enough since the exponential map corresponding to $SL_2(\mathbb{C})$ is not surjective. Our result extends to the linear group $GL_2(R)$.
For a quasi-Fuchsian group $\Ga$ with ordinary set $Ω$, and $Δ_{n}$ the Laplacian on \n differentials on $\Ga\bkΩ$, we define a notion of a Bers dual basis $ϕ_{1},...c,ϕ_{2d}$ for $\kerΔ_{n}$. We prove that $\detΔ_{n}/\det <ϕ_{j},ϕ_{k}>$, is, up to an anomaly computed by Takhtajan and the second author in \cite{TT1}, the modulus squared of a holomorphic function F(n), where F(n) is a quasi-Fuchsian analogue of the Selberg zeta Z(n). This generalizes the D'Hoker-Phong formula $\detΔ_{n}=c_{g,n}Z(n)$, and is a quasi-Fuchsian counterpart of the result for Schottky groups proved by Takhtajan and t…
R. Guralnick (Linear Algebra Appl. 99, 85-96, 1988) proved that two holomorphic matrices on a noncompact connected Riemann surface, which are locally holomorphically similar, are globally holomorphically similar. We generalize this to (possibly, non-smooth) one-dimensional Stein spaces. For Stein spaces of arbitrary dimension, we prove that global $\mathcal C^\infty$ similarity implies global holomorphic similarity, whereas global continuous similarity is not sufficient.
We prove that the pointwise product of two holomorphic functions of the upper half-plane, one in the Hardy space $\mathcal H^1$, the other one in its dual, belongs to a Hardy type space. Conversely, every holomorphic function in this space can be written as such a product. This generalizes previous characterization in the context of the unit disc.

It is shown that any symplectic $2n\times 2n$-matrix, whose entries are complex holomorphic functions on a reduced Stein space, can be decomposed into a finite product of elementary symplectic matrices if and only if it is null-homotopic. Moreover, if this is the case, the number of factors can be bounded by a constant depending only on $n$ and the dimension of the space.
Let $\D$ be the unit disk. Kutzschebauch and Studer \cite{KS} recently proved that, for each continuous map $A:\overline D\to \mathrm{SL}(2,\C)$, which is holomorphic in $\D$, there exist continuous maps $E,F:\overline \D\to \mathfrak{sl}(2,\C)$, which are holomorphic in $\D$, such that $A=e^Ee^F$. Also they asked if this extends to arbitrary compact bordered Riemann surfaces. We prove that this is possible.
For a family of compact Riemann surfaces X_t of genus g>1 parametrized by the Schottky space S_g, we define a natural basis for the holomorphic n-differentials on X_t which varies holomorphically with t and generalizes the basis of normalized abelian differentials of the first kind for n=1. We introduce a holomorphic function F(n) on S_g which generalizes the classical product \prod(1-q^m)^2 appearing in the Dedekind eta function for n=1 and g=1. We prove a holomorphic factorization formula expressing the regularized determinant of the Laplacian as a product of |F(n)|^2, a holomorphic anomaly …
R. Guralnick [Linear Algebra Appl. 99, 85-96 (1988)] proved that two holomorphic matrices on a noncompact connected Riemann surface, which are locally holomorphically similar, are globally holomorphically similar. In the preprints [arXiv:1703.09524] and [arXiv:1703.09530], a generalization of this to arbitrary (possibly, nonsmooth) 1-dimensional Stein spaces was obtained. The present paper contains a revised version of the proof from [arXiv:1703.09524]. The method of this revised proof can be used also in the higher dimensional case, which will be the subject of a forthcoming paper.
Let $f$ be a harmonic map from a Riemann surface to a Riemannian $n$-manifold. We prove that if there is a holomorphic diffeomorphism $h$ between open subsets of the surface such that $f\circ h = f$, then $f$ factors through a holomorphic map onto another Riemann surface. If such $h$ is anti-holomorphic, we obtain an analogous statement. For minimal maps, this result is well known and is a consequence of the theory of branched immersions of surfaces due to Gulliver-Osserman-Royden. Our proof relies on various geometric properties of the Hopf differential.
Let $X$ be an open subset of $\Bbb C^N$, and let $A$ be an $n\times n$ matrix of holomorphic functions on $X$. We call a point $ξ\in X$ $\mathbf{Jordan}$ $\mathbf{stable}$ for $A$ if $ξ$ is not a splitting point of the eigenvalues of $A$ and, moreover, there is a neighborhood $U$ of $ξ$ such that, for each $1\le k\le n$, the number of Jordan blocks of size $k$ in the Jordan normal forms of $A(ζ)$ is the same for all $ζ\in U$. H. Baumgärtel (Analytic perturbation theory for matrices and operators, Birkhäuser, 1985) proved that there is a nowhere dense closed analytic subset of $X$, which contai…
In this article, we consider a bounded pseudoconvex domain in ${\bf C}^2$ satifying: (a) it admits a proper holomorphic mapping $f$ onto the unit ball $B^2$, and (b) it is simply connected and has a real analytic boundary. According to [Barletta-Bedford, Indiana U. Math. J, 39(1985), 315-338], the strong pseudconvexity of $B^2$ alone yields that such a domain is "weakly spherical" at the boundary points that are at the same time a smooth point of the branch locus $Z_{df} = \{\det(J_{\bf C} f) = 0\}$. (Notice that [Diederich-Fornaess, Math. Ann., 282 (1988), 681-700] implies that $f$ as well as…
The problem of matrix factorization motivated by diffraction or elasticity is studied. A powerful tool for analyzing its solutions is introduced, namely analytical continuation formulae are derived. Necessary condition for commutative factorization is found for a class of "balanced" matrices. Together with Moiseyev's method and Hurd's idea, this gives a description of the class of commutatively solvable matrices. As a result, a simple analytical procedure is described, providing an answer, whether a given matrix is commutatively factorizable or not.
Let $R$ be a commutative unital ring. A well-known factorization problem is whether any matrix in $\mathrm{SL}_n(R)$ is a product of elementary matrices with entries in $R$. To solve the problem, we use two approaches based on the notion of the Bass stable rank and on construction of a null-homotopy. Special attention is given to the case, where $R$ is a ring or Banach algebra of holomorphic functions. Also, we consider a related problem on representation of a matrix in $\mathrm{GL}_n(R)$ as a product of exponentials.
We prove that a symplectic matrix with entries in a ring with Bass stable rank one can be factored as a product of elementary symplectic matrices. This also holds for null-homotopic symplectic matrices with entries in a Banach algebra or in the ring of complex valued continuous functions on a finite dimensional normal topological space.
Let $R$ be the polydisc algebra or the Wiener algebra. It is shown that the group $SL_n(R)$ is generated by the subgroup of elementary matrices with all diagonal entries $1$ and at most one nonzero off-diagonal entry. The result an easy consequence of the deep result due to Ivarsson and Kutzschebauch (Ann. of Math. 2012).
Analytical solutions to two axisymmetric problems of a penny-shaped crack when an annulus-shaped (model 1) or a disc-shaped (model 2) rigid inclusion of arbitrary profile are embedded into the crack are derived. The problems are governed by integral equations with the Weber--Sonin kernel on two segments. By the Mellin convolution theorem the integral equations associated with the models 1 and 2 reduce to vector Riemann-Hilbert problems with and 3x3 and 2x2 triangular matrix coefficients whose entries consist of meromorphic and of infinite indices exponential functions. Canonical matrices of fa…
We consider matrix functions with certain invariance under inversion in the unit circle. If such a function satisfies a positivity assumption on the unit circle, then only zero partial indices appear in its Riemann-Hilbert (Wiener-Hopf) factorization. It implies the unique solvability of a certain class of Riemann-Hilbert boundary value problems. It includes the ones associated with the inverse scattering transform of the focusing/defocusing integrable discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equations.
We study the holomorphic Hardy-Orlicz spaces H^Φ(Ω), where Ωis the unit ball or, more generally, a convex domain of finite type or a strictly pseudoconvex domain in Cn . The function Φis in particular such that H ^1(Ω) \subset H^Φ(Ω) \subset H ^p (Ω) for some p > 0. We develop for them maximal characterizations, atomic and molecular decompositions. We then prove weak factorization theorems involving the space BMOA(Omega). As a consequence, we characterize those Hankel operators which are bounded from H ^Φ(Ω) into H^1 (Ω).
A new concept of meromorphic $Σ$-factorization, for Hölder continuous functions defined on a contour $Γ$ that is the pullback of $\dot{\mathbb{R}}$ (or the unit circle) in a Riemann surface $Σ$ of genus 1, is introduced and studied, and its relations with holomorphic $Σ$-factorization are discussed. It is applied to study and solve some scalar Riemann-Hilbert problems in $Σ$ and vectorial Riemann-Hilbert problems in $\mathbb{C}$, including Wiener-Hopf matrix factorization, as well as to study some properties of a class of Toeplitz operators with $2 \times 2$ matrix symbols.
