We construct a new class of complete constant mean curvature surfaces in R^3. These are geometrically different than the surfaces constructed by Kapouleas' gluing technique. These are obtained by piecing together half-Delaunay surfaces to the truncations of minimal k-noids. The gluing techniques are new: the surfaces are obtained by matching Cauchy data from the infinite dimensional family of exact solutions of the problem on each of the component pieces. These surfaces are also proved to be nondegenerate in the CMC moduli space.
We construct constant mean curvature surfaces in euclidean space by gluing n half Delaunay surfaces to a non-degenerate minimal n-noid, using the DPW method.
The generalized Weierstrass representation is used to analyze the asymptotic behavior of a constant mean curvature surface that arises locally from an ordinary differential equation with a regular singularity. We prove that a holomorphic perturbation of an ODE that represents a Delaunay surface generates a constant mean curvature surface which has a properly immersed end that is asymptotically Delaunay. Furthermore, that end is embedded if the Delaunay surface is unduloidal.
We consider constant mean curvature 1 surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$ arising via the DPW method from a holomorphic perturbation of the standard Delaunay potential on the punctured disk. Kilian, Rossman and Schmitt have proven that such a surface is asymptotic to a Delaunay surface. We consider families of such potentials parametrised by the necksize of the model Delaunay surface and prove the existence of a uniform disk on which the surfaces are close to the model Delaunay surface and are embedded in the unduloid case.
For all $m \in \mathbb N - \{0\}$, we prove the existence of a one dimensional family of genus $m$, constant mean curvature (equal to 1) surfaces which are complete, immersed in $\mathbb R^3$ and have two Delaunay ends asymptotic to nodo\"ıdal ends. Moreover, these surfaces are invariant under the group of isometries of $\mathbb R^3$ leaving a horizontal regular polygon with $m+1$ sides fixed.
In this paper we produce families of complete non compact Riemannian metrics with positive constant $σ_k$-curvature by performing the connected sum of a finite number of given $n$-dimensional Delaunay type solutions, provided $2 \leq 2k < n$. The problem is equivalent to solve a second order fully nonlinear elliptic equation.
In this paper, we construct Delaunay type constant mean curvature surfaces along a nondegenerate closed geodesic in a 3-dimensional Riemannian manifold.
It has been showed by Byde that it is possible to attach a Delaunay-type end to a compact nondegenerate manifold of positive constant scalar curvature, provided it is locally conformally flat in a neighborhood of the attaching point. The resulting manifold is noncompact with the same constant scalar curvature. The main goal of this paper is to generalize this result. We will construct a one-parameter family of solutions to the positive singular Yamabe problem for any compact non-degenerate manifold with Weyl tensor vanishing to sufficiently high order at the singular point. If the dimension is…
We obtain a classification result for rotational surfaces in the Heisenberg space and the universal cover of the special linear group, whose mean curvature is given as a prescribed $C^1$ function depending on their angle function. We show that these surfaces behave like the Delaunay surfaces of constant mean curvature, under some assumptions on the prescribed function. In contrast with the constant mean curvature case, we exhibit the existence of rotational, embedded tori, providing counterexamples of the Alexandrov problem for this class of immersed surfaces.
The purpose of this paper is to study immersed surfaces in the product spaces $\mathbb{M}^2(κ)\times\mathbb{R}$, whose mean curvature is given as a $C^1$ function depending on their angle function. This class of surfaces extends widely, among others, the well-known theory of surfaces with constant mean curvature. In this paper we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of prescribed mean curvature spheres, and we describe complete surfaces of revolution proving that they behave as the Delaunay surfaces of CMC type.
We construct large families of initial data sets for the vacuum Einstein equations with positive cosmological constant which contain exactly Delaunay ends; these are non-trivial initial data sets which coincide with those for the Kottler-Schwarzschild-de Sitter metrics in regions of infinite extent. From the purely Riemannian geometric point of view, this produces complete, constant positive scalar curvature metrics with exact Delaunay ends which are not globally Delaunay. The ends can be used to construct new compact initial data sets via gluing constructions. The construction provided applie…
We combine the DPW method and Opening Nodes to construct embedded surfaces of positive constant mean curvature with Delaunay ends in euclidean space, with no limitation to the genus or number of ends.
We combine the DPW method and opening nodes to construct embedded surfaces of positive constant mean curvature with Delaunay ends in euclidean space, with no limitation to the genus or number of ends.
We prove that Delaunay surfaces, except the plane and the catenoid, are the only surfaces in Euclidean space with nonzero constant mean curvature that can be expressed as an implicit equation of type $f(x)+g(y)+h(z)=0$, where $f$, $g$ and $h$ are smooth real functions of one variable.
This paper constructs a family of constant mean curvature immersions of the thrice-punctured Riemann sphere into Euclidean 3-space with asymptotically Delaunay ends via loop group methods.
We study hypersurfaces of $\mathbb{R}^N$ with constant nonlocal (or fractional) mean curvature. This is the equation associated to critical points of the fractional perimeter functional under a volume constraint. We establish the existence of a smooth branch of periodic cylinders in $\mathbb{R}^N$, $N\geq 2$, all of them with the same constant nonlocal mean curvature, and bifurcating from a straight cylinder. These are Delaunay type cylinders in the nonlocal setting. The proof uses the Crandall-Rabinowitz theorem applied to a quasilinear type fractional elliptic equation.
Classical Delaunay surfaces are highly symmetric constant mean curvature (CMC) submanifolds of space forms. We prove the existence of Delaunay-type hypersurfaces in a large class of compact manifolds, using the geometry of cohomogeneity one group actions and variational bifurcation techniques. Our construction specializes to the classical examples in round spheres, and allows to obtain Delaunay-type hypersurfaces in many other ambient spaces, ranging from complex and quaternionic projective spaces to Kervaire exotic spheres.
We are concerned with hypersurfaces of $\mathbb{R}^N$ with constant nonlocal (or fractional) mean curvature. This is the equation associated to critical points of the fractional perimeter under a volume constraint. Our results are twofold. First we prove the nonlocal analogue of the Alexandrov result characterizing spheres as the only closed embedded hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^N$ with constant mean curvature. Here we use the moving planes method. Our second result establishes the existence of periodic bands or "cylinders" in $\mathbb{R}^2$ with constant nonlocal mean curvature and bifurcatin…
Using the DPW method, we construct genus zero Alexandrov-embedded constant mean curvature (greater than one) surfaces with any number of Delaunay ends in hyperbolic space.
In 1841, Delaunay constructed the embedded surfaces of revolution with constant mean curvature (CMC); these unduloids have genus zero and are now known to be the only embedded CMC surfaces with two ends and finite genus. Here, we construct the complete family of embedded CMC surfaces with three ends and genus zero; they are classified using their asymptotic necksizes. We work in a class slightly more general than embedded surfaces, namely immersed surfaces which bound an immersed three-manifold, as introduced by Alexandrov.
We present a gluing construction which adds, via a localized deformation, exactly Delaunay ends to generic metrics with constant positive scalar curvature. This provides time-symmetric initial data sets for the vacuum Einstein equations with positive cosmological constant with exactly Kottler-Schwarzschild-de Sitter ends, extending the results in arXiv:0710.3365 [gr-qc].
We derive parametrizations of the Delaunay constant mean curvature surfaces of revolution that follow directly from parametrizations of the conics that generate these surfaces via the corresponding roulette. This uniform treatment exploits the natural geometry of the conic (parabolic, elliptic or hyperbolic) and leads to simple expressions for the mean and Gaussian curvatures of the surfaces as well as the construction of new surfaces.
Four constructions of constant mean curvature (CMC) hypersurfaces in the (n+1)-sphere are given, which should be considered analogues of `classical' constructions that are possible for CMC hypersurfaces in Euclidean space. First, Delaunay-like hypersurfaces, consisting roughly of a chain of hyperspheres winding multiple times around an equator, are shown to exist for all values of the mean curvature. Second, a hypersurface is constructed which consists of two chains of spheres winding around a pair of orthogonal equators, showing that Delaunay-like hypersurfaces can be fused together in a symm…
We announce the classification of complete, almost embedded surfaces of constant mean curvature, with three ends and genus zero: they are classified by triples of points on the sphere whose distances are the asymptotic necksizes of the three ends.
We show that any complete, immersed self-expander to the inverse mean curvature flow, which has one end asymptotic to a cylinder, or has two ends asymptotic to two coaxial cylinders, must be rotationally symmetric.
We study graphs with nonnegative Bakry-Émery curvature or Ollivier curvature outside a finite subset. For such a graph, via introducing the discrete Gromov-Hausdorff convergence we prove that the space of bounded harmonic functions is finite dimensional, and as a corollary the number of non-parabolic ends is finite.
In this paper, we consider complete non-catenoidal minimal surfaces of finite total curvature with two ends. A family of such minimal surfaces with least total absolute curvature is given. Moreover, we obtain a uniqueness theorem for this family from its symmetries.
All complete, axially symmetric surfaces of constant mean curvature in R^3 lie in the one-parameter family D_tau of Delaunay surfaces. The elements of this family which are embedded are called unduloids; all other elements, which correspond to parameter value tau element in R^-, are immersed and are called nodoids. The unduloids are stable in the sense that the only global constant mean curvature deformations of them are to other elements of this Delaunay family. We prove here that this same property is true for nodoids only when tau is sufficiently close to zero (this corresponds to these sur…
In Euclidean 3-space endowed with a Cartesian reference system we consider a class of surfaces, called Delaunay tori, constructed by bending segments of Delaunay cylinders with neck-size $a$ and $n$ lobes along circumferences centered at the origin. Such surfaces are complete and compact, have genus one and almost constant, say 1, mean curvature, when $n$ is large. Considering a class of mappings $H\colon\mathbb{R}^{3}\to\mathbb{R}$ such that $H(X)\to 1$ as $|X|\to\infty$ with some decay of inverse-power type, we show that for $n$ large and $|a|$ small, in a suitable neighborhood of any Delaun…
We give a mathematical foundation for, and numerical demonstration of, the existence of mean curvature 1 surfaces of genus 1 with either two elliptic ends or two hyperbolic ends in de Sitter 3-space. An end of a mean curvature 1 surface is an ``elliptic end'' (resp. a ``hyperbolic end'') if the monodromy matrix at the end is diagonalizable with eigenvalues in the unit circle (resp. in the reals). Although the existence of the surfaces is numerical, the types of ends are mathematically determined.
We prove the existence of a new class of constant mean curvature cylinders with an arbitrary number of umbilics by unitarizing the monodromy of Hill's equation.
We compute the flux of Killing fields through ends of constant mean curvature 1 in hyperbolic space, and we prove a result conjectured by Rossman, Umehara and Yamada : the flux matrix they have defined is equivalent to the flux of Killing fields. We next give a geometric description of embedded ends of finite total curvature. In particular, we show that we can define an axis for these ends that are asymptotic to a catenoid cousin. We also compute the flux of Killing fields through these ends, and we deduce some geometric properties and some analogies with minimal surfaces in Euclidean space.
In this paper we consider the conformal type (parabolicity or non-parabolicity) of complete ends of revolution immersed in simply connected space forms of constant sectional curvature. We show that any complete end of revolution in the $3$-dimensional Euclidean space or in the $3$-dimensional sphere is parabolic. In the case of ends of revolution in the hyperbolic $3$-dimensional space, we find sufficient conditions to attain parabolicity for complete ends of revolution using their relative position to the complete flat surfaces of revolution.
In this paper we extend Efimov's Theorem by proving that any complete surface in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with Gauss curvature bounded above by a negative constant outside a compact set has finite total curvature, finite area and is properly immersed. Moreover, its ends must be asymptotic to half-lines. We also give a partial solution to Milnor's conjecture by studying isometric immersions in a space form of complete surfaces which satisfy that outside a compact set they have non positive Gauss curvature and the square of a principal curvature function is bounded from below by a positive constant.
With the developments of the last decade on complete constant mean curvature 1 (CMC 1) surfaces in the hyperbolic 3-space $H^3$, many examples of such surfaces are now known. However, most of the known examples have regular ends. (An end is irregular, resp. regular, if the hyperbolic Gauss map of the surface has an essential singularity, resp. at most a pole, there.) There are some known surfaces with irregular ends, but they are all either reducible or of infinite total curvature. (The surface is reducible if and only if the monodromy of the secondary Gauss map can be simultaneously diagonali…
We show the existence of several new families of non-compact constant mean curvature surfaces: (i) singly-punctured surfaces of arbitrary genus $g \geq 1$, (ii) doubly-punctured tori, and (iii) doubly periodic surfaces with Delaunay ends.
We study constant mean curvature 1/2 surfaces in H2xR that admit a compactification of the mean curvature operator. We show that a particular family of complete entire graphs over H2 admits a structure of infinite dimensional manifold with local control on the behaviors at infinity. These graphs also appear to have a half-space property and we deduce a uniqueness result at infinity. Deforming non degenerate constant mean curvature 1/2 annuli, we provide a large class of (non rotational) examples and construct (possibly embedded) annuli without axis, i.e. with two vertical, asymptotically rotat…
We investigate the close relationship between minimal surfaces in Euclidean 3-space and constant mean curvature 1 surfaces in hyperbolic 3-space. Just as in the case of minimal surfaces in Euclidean 3-space, the only complete connected embedded constant mean curvature 1 surfaces with two ends in hyperbolic space are well-understood surfaces of revolution -- the catenoid cousins. In contrast to this, we show that, unlike the case of minimal surfaces in Euclidean 3-space, there do exist complete connected immersed constant mean curvature 1 surfaces with two ends in hyperbolic space that are not …
In this article we provide a general construction when $n\ge3$ for immersed in Euclidean $(n+1)$-space, complete, smooth, constant mean curvature hypersurfaces of finite topological type (in short CMC $n$-hypersurfaces). More precisely our construction converts certain graphs in Euclidean $(n+1)$-space to CMC $n$-hypersurfaces with asymptotically Delaunay ends in two steps: First appropriate small perturbations of the given graph have their vertices replaced by round spherical regions and their edges and rays by Delaunay pieces so that a family of initial smooth hypersurfaces is constructed. O…
We show that two smooth nearby Riemannian metrics can be glued interpolating their scalar curvature. The resulting smooth metric is the same as the starting ones outside the gluing region and has scalar curvature interpolating between the original ones. One can then glue metrics while maintaining inequalities satisfied by the scalar curvature. We also glue asymptotically Euclidean metrics to Schwarzschild ones and the same for asymptotically Delaunay metrics, keeping bounds on the scalar curvature, if any. This extend the Corvino gluing near infinity to non-constant scalar curvature metrics.
The ends of a complete embedded minimal surface of {\em finite total curvature} are well understood (every such end is asymptotic to a catenoid or to a plane). We give a similar characterization for a large class of ends of {\em infinite total curvature}, showing that each such end is asymptotic to a helicoid. The result applies, in particular, to the genus one helicoid and implies that it is embedded outside of a compact set in ${\mathbb R}^3$.
We consider constant mean curvature surfaces of finite topology, properly embedded in three-space in the sense of Alexandrov. Such surfaces with three ends and genus zero were constructed and completely classified by the authors in arXiv:math.DG/0102183. Here we extend the arguments to the case of an arbitrary number of ends, under the assumption that the asymptotic axes of the ends lie in a common plane: we construct and classify the entire family of these genus-zero coplanar constant mean curvature surfaces.
We classify constant mean curvature surfaces invariant by a 1-parameter group of isometries in the Berger spheres and in the special linear group Sl(2, R). In particular, all constant mean curvature spheres in those spaces are described explicitly, proving that they are not always embedded. Besides new examples of Delaunay-type surfaces are obtained. Finally the relation between the area and volume of these spheres in the Berger spheres is studied, showing that, in some cases, they are not solution to the isoperimetric problem.
We present a theorem on the unitarizability of loop group valued monodromy representations and apply this to show the existence of new families of constant mean curvature surfaces homeomorphic to a thrice-punctured sphere in the simply-connected 3-dimensional space forms $\R^3$, $\bbS^3 $ and $\bbH^3$. Additionally, we compute the extended frame for any associated family of Delaunay surfaces.
A Ricci surface is defined as a Riemannian surface $(M,g_M)$ whose Gauss curvature satisfies the differential equation $KΔK + g_M(dK,dK) + 4K^3=0$. Andrei Moroianu and Sergiu Moroianu proved that a Ricci surface with non-positive Gauss curvature admits locally a minimal immersion into $\mathbb{R}^3$. In this paper, we are interested in studying non-compact orientable Ricci surfaces with catenoidal ends. We use an analogue of the Weierstrass data to obtain some classification results for such Ricci surfaces. We also give an existence result for positive genus Ricci surfaces with catenoidal ends…
Embedded minimal surfaces of finite total curvature in $\mathbb{R}^3$ are reasonably well understood: From far away, they look like intersecting catenoids and planes, suitably desingularized. We consider the larger class of harmonic embeddings in $\mathbb{R}^{3}$ of compact Riemann surfaces with finitely many punctures where the harmonic coordinate functions are given as real parts of meromorphic functions. This paper is motivated by two outstanding features of such surfaces: They can have highly complicated ends, and they still have total Gauss curvature being a multiple of $2π$. This poses t…
We show $ 10/8$-type inequalities for some end-periodic $4$-manifolds which have positive scalar curvature metrics on the ends. As an application, we construct a new family of closed $4$-manifolds which do not admit positive scalar curvature metrics.
We consider a general theory of curvatures of discrete surfaces equipped with edgewise parallel Gauss images, and where mean and Gaussian curvatures of faces are derived from the faces' areas and mixed areas. Remarkably these notions are capable of unifying notable previously defined classes of surfaces, such as discrete isothermic minimal surfaces and surfaces of constant mean curvature. We discuss various types of natural Gauss images, the existence of principal curvatures, constant curvature surfaces, Christoffel duality, Koenigs nets, contact element nets, s-isothermic nets, and interestin…
This paper extends, in a sharp way, the famous Efimov's Theorem to immersed ends in $\real^3$. More precisely, let $M$ be a non-compact connected surface with compact boundary. Then there is no complete isometric immersion of $M$ into $\Bbb R^3$ satisfying that $\int_M |K|=+\infty$ and $K\le-κ<0$, where $κ$ is a positive constant and $K$ is the Gaussian curvature of $M$. In particular Efimov's Theorem holds for complete Hadamard immersed surfaces, whose Gaussian curvature $K$ is bounded away from zero outside a compact set.
In this paper we prove that a complete minimal surface immersed in H^2xR, with finite total curvature and two ends, each one asymptotic to a vertical geodesic plane, must be a horizontal catenoid. Moreover, we give a geometric description of minimal ends of finite total curvature in H^2xR. We also prove that a minimal complete end E with finite total curvature is properly immersed and that the Gaussian curvature of E is locally bounded in terms of the geodesic distance to its boundary.
We classify all rotational surfaces in Euclidean space whose principal curvatures $κ_1$ and $κ_2$ satisfy the linear relation $κ_1=aκ_2+b$, where $a$ and $b$ are two constants. We give a variational characterization of these surfaces in terms of its generating curve. As a consequence of our classification, we find closed (embedded and not embedded) surfaces and periodic (embedded and not embedded) surfaces with a geometric behaviour similar to Delaunay surfaces.
We prove the existence of nonperiodic, properly embedded minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^2\times\mathbb{S}^1$ with genus zero, infinitely many ends and one limit end (in particular, they have infinite total curvature).
