Motivated by the work of Douady, Ghys, Herman and Shishikura on Siegel quadratic polynomials, we study the one-dimensional slice of the cubic polynomials which have a fixed Siegel disk of rotation number theta, with theta being a given irrational number of Brjuno type. Our main goal is to prove that when theta is of bounded type, the boundary of the Siegel disk is a quasicircle which contains one or both critical points of the cubic polynomial. We also prove that the locus of all cubics with both critical points on the boundary of their Siegel disk is a Jordan curve, which is in some sense parametrized by the angle between the two critical points. A main tool in the bounded type case is a related space of degree 5 Blaschke products which serve as models for our cubics. Along the way, we prove several results about the connectedness locus of these cubic polynomials.
A cubic polynomial $f$ with a periodic Siegel disk containing an eventual image of a critical point is said to be a \emph{Siegel capture polynomial}. If the Siegel disk is invariant, we call $f$ a \emph{IS-capture polynomial} (or just an IS-capture; IS stands for Invariant Siegel). We study the location of IS-capture polynomials in the parameter space of all cubic polynomials and show that any IS-capture is on the boundary of a unique hyperbolic component determined by the rational lamination of the map. We also relate IS-captures to the cubic Principal Hyperbolic Domain and its closure (by de…
We show the existence of a rational surface automorphism of positive entropy with a given number of Siegel disks. Moreover, among automorphisms obtained from quadratic birational maps on the projective plane fixing irreducible cubic curves, we find out an automorphism of positive entropy with multiple Siegel disks.
We study the slices of the parameter space of cubic polynomials where we fix the multiplier of a fixed point to some value $λ$. The main object of interest here is the radius of convergence of the linearizing parametrization. The opposite of its logarithm turns out to be a sub-harmonic function of the parameter whose Laplacian $μ_λ$ is of particular interest. We relate its support to the Zakeri curve in the case the multiplier is neutral with a bounded type irrational rotation number. In the attracting case, we define and study an analogue of the Zakeri curve, using work of Petersen and Tan. I…
Consider a quadratic polynomial with a fixed Siegel disc of bounded type. Using an adaptation of complex a priori bounds for critical circle maps, we prove that this Siegel polynomial is conformally mateable with the basilica polynomial.
Let F be a quadratic rational map of the sphere which has two fixed Siegel disks with bounded type rotation numbers theta and nu. Using a new degree 3 Blaschke product model for the dynamics of F and an adaptation of complex a priori bounds for renormalization of critical circle maps, we prove that F can be realized as the mating of two Siegel quadratic polynomials with the corresponding rotation numbers theta and nu.
We extend a theorem of Herman from the case of unicritical polynomials to the case of polynomials with two finite critical values. This theorem states that Siegel disks of such polynomials, under a diophantine condition (called Herman's condition) on the rotation number, must have a critical point on their boundaries.
Let $f$ be a quadratic polynomial which has an irrationally indifferent fixed point $α$. Let $z$ be a biaccessible point in the Julia set of $f$. Then: 1. In the Siegel case, the orbit of $z$ must eventually hit the critical point of $f$. 2. In the Cremer case, the orbit of $z$ must eventually hit the fixed point $α$. Siegel polynomials with biaccessible critical point certainly exist, but in the Cremer case it is possible that biaccessible points can never exist. As a corollary, we conclude that the set of biaccessible points in the Julia set of a Siegel or Cremer quadratic polynomial has Bro…
We transfer the lower semi-continuity of Siegel disks with fixed Brjuno type rotation numbers to geometric limits. Here, we restrict to Lavaurs maps associated to quadratic polynomials with a parabolic fixed point.
In the paper we describe basin of attraction of the $p$-adic dynamical system $f(x)=x^3+ax^2$. Moreover, we also describe the Siegel discs of the system, since the structure of the orbits of the system is related to the geometry of the $p$-adic Siegel discs.
We study the closure of the cubic Principal Hyperbolic Domain and its intersection $\mathcal{P}_λ$ with the slice $\mathcal{F}_λ$ of the space of all cubic polynomials with fixed point $0$ defined by the multiplier $λ$ at $0$. We show that any bounded domain $\mathcal{W}$ of $\mathcal{F}_λ\setminus\mathcal{P}_λ$ consists of $J$-stable polynomials $f$ with connected Julia sets $J(f)$ and is either of \emph{Siegel capture} type (then $f\in \mathcal{W}$ has an invariant Siegel domain $U$ around $0$ and another Fatou domain $V$ such that $f|_V$ is two-to-one and $f^k(V)=U$ for some $k>0$) or of \e…
Let $f$ be a polynomial map of the Riemann sphere of degree at least two. We prove that if $f$ has a Siegel disk $G$ on which the rotation number satisfies a diophantine condition, then the boundary of $G$ contains a critical point.
The boundary of the Siegel disk of a quadratic polynomial with an irrationally indifferent fixed point and the rotation number whose continued fraction expansion is preperiodic has been observed to be self-similar with a certain scaling ratio. The restriction of the dynamics of the quadratic polynomial to the boundary of the Siegel disk is known to be quasisymmetrically conjugate to the rigid rotation with the same rotation number. The geometry of this self-similarity is universal for a large class of holomorphic maps. A renormalization explanation of this universality has been proposed in the…
In the quadratic family (the set of polynomials of degree 2), Petersen and Zakeri proved the existence of Siegel disks whose boundaries are Jordan curves, but not quasicircles. In their examples, the critical point is contained in the curve. In the first part, we prove the existence of quadratic examples that do not contain the critical point. In the second part, using a more abstract point of view (suggested by Avila), we show that we can control quite precisely the degree of regularity of the boundary of the quadratic Siegel disks we create by perturbations. For instance there exists example…
X. Buff and A. Cheritat proved that there are quadratic polynomials having Siegel disks with smooth boundaries. Based on a simplification of A. Avila, we give yet another simplification of their proof. The main tool used is a harmonic function introduced by Yoccoz whose boundary values are the sizes of the Siegel disks. The proof also applies to some other families of polynomials, entire and meromorphic functions.
We study the class of entire transcendental maps of finite order with one critical point and one asymptotic value, which has exactly one finite pre-image, and having a persistent Siegel disc. After normalisation this is a one parameter family $f_a$ with $a\in\mathbb{C}^*$ which includes the semi-standard map $λze^z$ at $a=1$, approaches the exponential map when $a\to0$ and a quadratic polynomial when $a\to\infty$. We investigate the stable components of the parameter plane (capture components and semi-hyperbolic components) and also some topological properties of the Siegel disc in terms of th…
It has been previously shown by two of the authors that some polynomial Julia sets are algorithmically impossible to draw with arbitrary magnification. On the other hand, for a large class of examples the problem of drawing a picture has polynomial complexity. In this paper we demonstrate the existence of computable quadratic Julia sets whose computational complexity is arbitrarily high.
For quadratic polynomials of one complex variable, the boundary of the golden-mean Siegel disk must be a quasicircle. We show that the analogous statement is not true for quadratic Hénon maps of two complex variables.
If $\a$ is an irrational number, we let $\{p_n/q_n\}_{n\geq 0}$, be the approximants given by its continued fraction expansion. The Bruno series $B(\a)$ is defined as $$B(\a)=\sum_{n\geq 0} \frac{\log q_{n+1}}{q_n}.$$ The quadratic polynomial $P_\a:z\mapsto e^{2iπ\a}z+z^2$ has an indifferent fixed point at the origin. If $P_\a$ is linearizable, we let $r(\a)$ be the conformal radius of the Siegel disk and we set $r(\a)=0$ otherwise. Yoccoz proved that if $B(\a)=\infty$, then $r(\a)=0$ and $P_\a$ is not linearizable. In this article, we present a different proof and we show that there exists a …
In this paper we prove existence of matings between a large class of renormalizable cubic polynomials with one fixed critical point and another cubic polynomial having two fixed critical points. The resulting mating is a Newton map. Our result is the first part towards a conjecture by Tan Lei, stating that all (cubic) Newton maps can be described as matings or captures.
We study polynomials with coefficients in a field L as dynamical systems where L is any algebraically closed and complete ultrametric field with dense valuation group and characteristic zero residual field. We give a complete description of the dynamical and parameter space of cubic polynomials. In particular we characterize cubic polynomials with compact Julia sets. Also, we prove that any infraconnected connected component of a filled Julia set (of a cubic polynomial) is either a point or eventually periodic. A smallest field S with the above properties is, up to isomorphism, the completion …
We consider the family of cubic polynomials with a simple parabolic fixed point. We prove that the boundary of the immediate basin of attraction of the parabolic point is a Jordan curve and give a description of the dynamics.
We construct new examples of cubic polynomials with a parabolic fixed point that cannot be approximated by Misiurewicz polynomials. In particular, such parameters admit maximal bifurcations, but do not belong to the support of the bifurcation measure.
We study the dynamics of cubic polynomials restricted to their basins of infinity, and we enumerate topological conjugacy classes with given combinatorics.
In this paper we discuss two different existing algorithms for computing topological entropy and we perform one of them in order to compute the isentropes for cubic polynomials.
In the moduli space of complex cubic polynomials with a marked critical point, given any p>=1, we prove that the loci formed by polynomials with the marked critical point periodic of period p is an irreducible curve. Thus answering a question posed by Milnor in the 90's.
In this paper, we study slices of the parameter space of cubic polynomials, up to affine conjugacy, given by a fixed value of the multiplier at a non-repelling fixed point. In particular, we study the location of the $main\, cubioid$ in this parameter space. The $main\, cubioid$ is the set of affine conjugacy classes of complex cubic polynomials that have certain dynamical properties generalizing those of polynomials $z^2+c$ for $c$ in the filled main cardioid.
We study the geometric structure of the boundary of Herman rings in a model family of Blaschke products of degree 3. Shishikura's quasiconformal surgery relates the Herman ring to the Siegel disk of a quadratic polynomial. By studying the regularity properties of the maps involved, we can transfer McMullen's results on the fine local geometry of Siegel disks to the Herman ring setting.
We describe a topological relationship between slices of the parameter space of cubic maps. In the paper \cite{CP1}, Milnor defined the curves $\mathcal{S}_n$ as the set of all cubic polynomials with a marked critical point of period $p$. In this paper, we will describe a relationship between the boundaries of the connectedness loci in the curves $\mathcal{S}_1$ and $\mathcal{S}_2$.
We prove that the boundary of every parabolic component in the cubic polynomial slice $Per_1(1)$ is a Jordan curve by adapting the technique of para-puzzles presented in \cite{Roesch1}. We also give a global description of the connected locus $\mathcal{C}_1$: it is the union of two main parabolic components and the limbs attached on their boundaries.
We provide an algorithm for computing the Euler characteristic of the curves $S_p$ in the space of cubic polynomials, consisting of all polynomials with a periodic critical point of period $p$. The curves were introduced in [Milnor, Bonifant-Kiwi-Milnor], and the algorithm applies the main results of [DeMarco-Pilgrim]. The output is shown for periods $p \leq 26$.
We apply the averaging theory of high order for computing the limit cycles of discontinuous piecewise quadratic and cubic polynomial perturbations of a linear center. These discontinuous piecewise differential systems are formed by two either quadratic, or cubic polynomial differential systems separated by a straight line. We compute the maximum number of limit cycles of these discontinuous piecewise polynomial perturbations of the linear center, which can be obtained by using the averaging theory of order $n$ for $n=1,2,3,4,5$. Of course these limit cycles bifurcate from the periodic orbits o…
If alpha is an irrational number, we define Yoccoz's Brjuno function Phi by Phi(alpha)=sum_{n geq 0} alpha_0*alpha_1*...*alpha_{n-1}*log(1/alpha_n), where alpha_0 is the fractional part of alpha and alpha_{n+1} is the fractional part of 1/alpha_n. The numbers alpha such that Phi(alpha)<infty are called the Brjuno numbers. The quadratic polynomial P_alpha:z -> e^{2i pi alpha}z+z^2 has an indifferent fixed point at the origin. If P_alpha is linearizable, we let r(alpha) be the conformal radius of the Siegel disk and we set r(alpha)=0 otherwise. Yoccoz proved that Phi(alpha)=infty if and only if …
The long-standing problem of existence of nowhere dense rational Julia set with positive area has been solved by an example in quadratic polynomials by Buff and Chéritat. Since then many efforts have been devoted to finding out new classes of rational maps with nowhere dense Julia sets having positive area. So far, all known examples of this kind are renormalizable with only one exception which is a quadratic polynomial. In this paper, by developing a new approach, we prove that there exists a non-renormalizable cubic polynomial having a Julia set with positive area.
A small perturbation of a quadratic polynomial with a non-repelling fixed point gives a polynomial with an attracting fixed point and a Jordan curve Julia set, on which the perturbed polynomial acts like angle doubling. However, there are cubic polynomials with a non-repelling fixed point, for which no perturbation results into a polynomial with Jordan curve Julia set. Motivated by the study of the closure of the Cubic Principal Hyperbolic Domain, we describe such polynomials in terms of their quadratic-like restrictions.
We classify all cubic systems possessing the maximum number of invariant straight lines (real or complex) taking into account their multiplicities. We prove that there are exactly 23 topological different classes of such systems. For every class we provide the configuration of its invariant straight lines in the Poincare disc. Moreover, every class is characterized by a set of affine invariant conditions.
We prove that if $F$ is a degree $3$ Thurston map with two fixed critical points, then any irreducible obstruction for $F$ contains a Levy cycle. As a corollary, it will be shown that if $f$ and $g$ are two postcritically finite cubic polynomials each having a fixed critical point, then any obstruction to the mating $f \mate g$ contains a Levy cycle. We end with an appendix to show examples of the obstructions described in the paper.
The space of monic centered cubic polynomials with marked critical points is isomorphic to C^2. For each n>0, the locus Sn formed by all polynomials with a specified critical point periodic of exact period n forms an affine algebraic set. We prove that Sn is irreducible, thus giving an affirmative answer to a question posed by Milnor. (This manuscript has been withdrawn)
In this paper, we study the number of limit cycles which bifurcate from the periodic orbits of cubic polynomial vector fields of Lotka-Volterra type having a rational first integral of degree 2, under polynomial perturbations of degree $n$. The analysis is carried out by estimating the number of zeros of the corresponding Abelian integrals. Moreover, using \emph{Chebyshev criterion}, we show that the sharp upper bound for the number of zeros of the Abelian integrals defined on each period annulus is 3 for $n=3$. The simultaneous bifurcation and distribution of limit cycles for the system with …
This article focus on the connected locus of the cubic polynomial slice $Per_1(λ)$ with a parabolic fixed point of multiplier $λ=e^{2πi\frac{p}{q}}$. We first show that any parabolic component, which is a parallel notion of hyperbolic component, is a Jordan domain. Moreover, a continuum $\mathcal{K}_λ$ called the central part in the connected locus is defined. This is the natural analogue to the closure of the main hyperbolic component of $Per_1(0)$. We prove that $\mathcal{K}_λ$ is almost a double covering of the filled-in Julia set of the quadratic polynomial $P_λ(z) = λz+z^2$.
A model for the Mandelbrot set is due to Thurston and is stated in the language of geodesic laminations. The conjecture that the Mandelbrot set is actually homeomorphic to this model is equivalent to the celebrated MLC conjecture stating that the Mandelbrot set is locally connected. For parameter spaces of higher degree polynomials, even conjectural models are missing, one possible reason being that the higher degree analog of the MLC conjecture is known to be false. We provide a combinatorial model for an essential part of the parameter space of complex cubic polynomials, namely, for the spac…
The parameter space $\mathcal{S}_p$ for monic centered cubic polynomial maps with a marked critical point of period $p$ is a smooth affine algebraic curve whose genus increases rapidly with $p$. Each $\mathcal{S}_p$ consists of a compact connectedness locus together with finitely many escape regions, each of which is biholomorphic to a punctured disk and is characterized by an essentially unique Puiseux series. This note will describe the topology of $\mathcal{S}_p$, and of its smooth compactification, in terms of these escape regions. It concludes with a discussion of the real sub-locus of $\…
