In the moduli space of complex cubic polynomials with a marked critical point, given any p>=1, we prove that the loci formed by polynomials with the marked critical point periodic of period p is an irreducible curve. Thus answering a question posed by Milnor in the 90's.

Irreducibility of the set of cubic polynomials with one periodic critical point

The space of monic centered cubic polynomials with marked critical points is isomorphic to C^2. For each n>0, the locus Sn formed by all polynomials with a specified critical point periodic of exact period n forms an affine algebraic set. We prove that Sn is irreducible, thus giving an affirmative answer to a question posed by Milnor. (This manuscript has been withdrawn)

Moduli of surface diffeomorphisms with cubic tangencies

In this paper, we study conjugacy invariants for 2-dimensional diffeomorphisms with homoclinic cubic tangencies (two-sided tangencies of the lowest order) under certain open conditions. Ordinary arguments used in past studies of conjugacy invariants associated with one-sided tangencies do not work in the two-sided case. We present a new method which is applicable to the two-sided case.

Moduli space of cubic Newton maps

In this article, we study the topology and bifurcations of the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_3$ of cubic Newton maps. It's a subspace of the moduli space of cubic rational maps, carrying the Riemann orbifold structure $(\mathbb{\widehat{C}}, (2,3,\infty))$. We prove two results: (1). The boundary of the unique unbounded hyperbolic component is a Jordan arc and the boundaries of all other hyperbolic components are Jordan curves. (2).The Head's angle map is surjective and monotone. The Moduli Space of Cubic Rational Maps

We construct the moduli space, $M_d$, of degree $d$ rational maps on $\mathbb{P}^1$ in terms of invariants of binary forms. We apply this construction to give explicit invariants and equations for $M_3$. Using classical invariant theory, we give solutions to the following problems: (1) explicitly construct, from a moduli point $P\in M_d(k)$, a rational map $ϕ$ with the given moduli; (2) find a model for $ϕ$ over the field of definition (i.e. explicit descent). We work out the method in detail for the cases $d=2,3$.

The Dynamical Andre-Oort Conjecture for cubic polynomials

In the moduli space of degree d polynomials, the special subvarieties are those cut out by critical orbit relations, and then the special points are the post-critically finite polynomials. It was conjectured that in the moduli space of degree d polynomials, the subvarieties containing a Zariski-dense set of special points are exactly these special subvarieties. In this article, we prove the first non-trivial case for this conjecture: the case of cubic polynomials.
