Let X be an Abelian surface and C a holomorphic curve in X representing a primitive homology class. The space of genus g curves in the class of C is g dimensional. We count the number of such curves that pass through g generic points and we also count the number of curves in the fixed linear system |C| passing through g-2 generic points. These two numbers, (defined appropriately) only depend on n and g where 2n=C^2+2-2g and not on the particular X or C (n is the number of nodes when a curve is nodal and reduced).
Gottsche conjectured that certain quasi-modular forms are the generating functions for the number of curves in a fixed linear system. Our theorem proves his formulas and shows that (a different) modular form also arises in the problem of counting curves without fixing a linear system. We use techniques that were developed in our earlier paper for similar questions on K3 surfaces. The techniques include Gromov-Witten invariants for families and a degeneration to an elliptic fibration. One new feature of the Abelian surface case is the presence of non-trivial Pic^0(X). We show that for any surface S the cycle in the moduli space of stable maps defined by requiring that the image of the map lies in a fixed linear system is homologous to the cycle defined by requiring the image of the map meets b_1 generic loops in S representing the generators of the first integral homology group (mod torsion).
Given a very general abelian fivefold $A$ and a principal polarization $Θ\subset A$, we construct surfaces generating the algebraic part of the middle cohomology $H^4(Θ, {\mathbb Q})$, and determine the intersection pairing between these surfaces. In particular, we obtain a new proof of the Hodge conjecture for $H^4(Θ, {\mathbb Q})$ and show that it contains a copy of the root lattice of $E_6$.
In this paper, we introduce (local and) global non-abelian zeta functions for general curves. As an example, we compute the so-called rank two zeta functions for genus two curves by studying non-abelian Brill-Noether loci and their infinitesimal structures.
Inspired by a theorem of Gruson-Lazarsfeld-Peskine bounding the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of curves in projective spaces, we bound the Theta-regularity of curves in polarized abelian varieties.
We study smooth curves on abelian surfaces, especially for genus 4, when the complementary subvariety in the Jacobian is also a surface. We show that up to translation there is exactly one genus 4 hyperelliptic curve on a general (1, 3)-polarised abelian surface. We investigate these curves and show that their Jacobians contain a surface and its dual as complementary abelian subvarieties.
We construct and study curves with low H-constants on abelian and K3 surfaces. Using the Kummer $(16_{6})$-configurations on Jacobian surfaces and some $(16_{10})$-configurations of curves on $(1,3)$-polarized Abelian surfaces, we obtain examples of configurations of curves of genus $>1$ on a generic Jacobian K3 surface with H-constants $<-4$.
This article shows that on a generic principally polarized abelian variety of dimension five the $\mathbb{Q}$-vector space of algebraic equivalences among the 27 Abel-Prym curves has dimension 20.
We construct the universal Mumford curve of given genus as a family of Mumford curves over the deformation space of degenerate curves in the category of arithmetic formal geometry. Furthermore, we give explicit formulas of abelian differentials and their periods of the universal Mumford curve.
Given a principally polarized abelian variety $(A,Θ)$, we give a characterization of all elliptic curves that lie on $A$ in terms of intersection numbers of divisor classes in its Néron-Severi group.
In this paper, second installment in a series of three, we give a correspondence theorem to relate the count of genus $g$ curves in a fixed linear system in an abelian surface to a tropical count. To do this, we relate the linear system defined by a complex curve to certain integrals of 1-forms over cycles in the curve. We then give an expression for the tropical multiplicity provided by the correspondence theorem, and prove the invariance for the associated refined multiplicity, thus introducing refined invariants of Block-Göttsche type in abelian surfaces.
We investigate the problem of counting tropical genus g curves in g-dimensional tropical abelian varieties. For g = 2, 3, we prove that the tropical count matches the count provided by Göttsche, Bryan-Leung, and Lange-Sernesi in the complex setting.
We prove constancy of Newton polygons of all convergent $F$-isocrystals on Abelian varieties over finite fields. Applying the constancy, we prove the isotriviality of projective smooth families of curves over Abelian varieties. We also study the isotriviality over simply connected projective smooth varieties.
Necessary and sufficient conditions are given (in terms of monodromy) for extending a family of smooth curves over an open subset U of S to a family of stable curves over S. More precisely, we introduce the abelian monodromy extension (AME) property and show that the standard Deligne-Mumford compactification is the unique, maximal AME compactification of the moduli space of curves. We also show that the Baily-Borel compactification is the unique, maximal projective AME compactification of the moduli space of abelian varieties.
We give an example of a regular dessin d'enfant whose field of moduli is not an abelian extension of the rational numbers, namely it is the field generated by a cubic root of 2. This answers a previous question. We also prove that the underlying curve has non-abelian field of moduli itself, giving an explicit example of a quasiplatonic curve with non-abelian field of moduli. In the last section, we note that two examples in previous literature can be used to find other examples of regular dessins d'enfants with non-abelian field of moduli.
In this note we investigate the connection between polylogarithms on curves and abelian schemes. The main result shows that the polylogarithm on the abelian scheme can be obtained as the push-forward of the polylogarithm on a suitable sub-curve. If the abelian scheme is the Jacobian of a smooth projective curve, this push-forward can also be written as a cup-product with the fundamental class of the curve.
We construct new examples of singular projective plane curves whose complements have finite and non-abelian fundamental groups, by generalizing the classical three cuspidal quartic curve discovered by Zariski.
New local and global non-abelian zeta functions for elliptic curves are studied using certain refined Brill-Noether loci in moduli spaces of semi-stable bundles. Examples of these zeta functions and a justification of using only semi-stable bundles are given too. We end this paper with an appendix on the so-called Weierstrass Groups for general curves, which is motivated by a construction of Euler systems from torsion points (of elliptic curves).
In this paper we prove a general theorem concerning the number of translation classes of curves of genus $g$ belonging to a fixed cohomology class in a polarized abelian variety of dimension $g$. For $g = 2$ we recover results of Göttsche and Bryan-Leung. For $g = 3$ we deduce explicit numbers for these classes.
In this paper, we study principally polarized abelian varieties $X$ of dimension $g$ that contain a curve $ν:C\to X$ such that the class of $C$ is $m$ times the minimal class. Welters introduced the formalism of stable pairs to handle this problem in the case $m=2$. We generalize the results of Welters and construct families of principally polarized abelian varieties for any $m$ and compute the dimension of the locus of these abelian varieties.
This survey article discusses some results on the structure of families f:V-->U of n-dimensional manifolds over quasi-projective curves U, with semistable reduction over a compactification Y of U. We improve the Arakelov inequality for the direct images of powers of the dualizing sheaf. For families of Abelian varieties we recall the characterization of Shimura curves by Arakelov equalities. For families of curves we recall the characterization of Teichmueller curves in terms of the existence of certain sub variation of Hodge structures. We sketch the proof that the moduli scheme of curves of …
We investigate the number and the geometry of smooth hyperelliptic curves on a general complex abelian surface. We show that the only possibilities of genera of such curves are $2,3,4$ and $5$. We focus on the genus 5 case. We prove that up to translation, there is a unique hyperelliptic curve in the linear system of a general $(1,4)$ polarised abelian surface. Moreover, the curve is invariant with respect to a subgroup of translations isomorphic to the Klein group. We give the decomposition of the Jacobian of such a curve into abelian subvarieties displaying Jacobians of quotient curves and P…
In [3], it is proved that the quotient of an abelian variety $A$ by a finite order automorphism $g$ is uniruled if and only if some power of $g$ satisfies a numerical condition $0<\age(g^k)<1$. In this paper, we show that $\age(g^k)=1$ is enough to guarantee that $A/\langle g\rangle$ has at least one rational curve.
A uniform bound of intersection multiplicities of curves and divisors on abelian varieties is proved by algebraic geometric methods. It extends and improves a result obtained by A. Buium with a different method based on Kolchin's differential algebra. The problem is modeled after the abc-Conjecture of Masser-Oesterle for abelian varieties over the function field of a curve. As an application a finiteness theorem is proved for maps from a curve into an abelian variety omitting an ample divisor.
In this paper, we introduce and study two new types of non-abelian zeta functions for curves over finite fields, which are defined by using (moduli spaces of) semi-stable vector bundles and non-stable bundles. A Riemann-Weil type hypothesis is formulated for zeta functions associated to semi-stable bundles, which we think is more canonical than the other one. All this is motivated by (and hence explains in a certain sense) our work on non-abelian zeta functions for number fields.
This paper gives a natural extension of Frobenius-Stickelberger formula and Kiepert formula to Abelian functions for "Purely Trigonal Curves", especially, of degree four. A description on the theory of Abelian functions for general trigonal curves of degree four is also included.
We use rigid analytic uniformization by Schottky groups to give a bound for the order of the abelian subgroups of the automorphism group of a Mumford curve in terms of its genus.
We relate a part of the abelian etale fundamental group of curves over local fields to the component group of the Neron model of the jacobian. We apply the result to the modular curve X_0(p)/Q_p to show that the unramified abelian covering X_1(p) over X_0(p) (Shimura covering) uses up all the possible ramification over the special fiber of X_0(p).
For a Grothendieck category C which, via a Z-generating sequence (O(n))_{n in Z}, is equivalent to the category of "quasi-coherent modules" over an associated Z-algebra A, we show that under suitable cohomological conditions "taking quasi-coherent modules" defines an equivalence between linear deformations of A and abelian deformations of C. If (O(n))_{n in Z} is at the same time a geometric helix in the derived category, we show that restricting a (deformed) Z-algebra to a "thread" of objects defines a further equivalence with linear deformations of the associated matrix algebra.
Following Deligne and Mumford we construct a coarse moduli space of smooth curves with non-abelian level structure, involving higher order commutators. We prove that its Deligne-Mumford compactification is smooth over an open part of Spec(${\msy Z}$).
We prove a non-archimedean analogue of the fact that a closed subvariety of a semi-abelian variety is hyperbolic modulo its special locus, and thereby generalize a result of Cherry.
Let G be a reductive group over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic. Let C be a smooth projective curve over k. We give a description of the moduli space of flat G-bundles in terms of the moduli space of G-Higgs bundles over the Frobenius twist C' of C. This description can be regarded as the non-abelian Hodge theory for curves in positive characteristic.
We compare flat cohomology with crystalline syntomic complexes in two cases: 1) $p$-divisible groups over a separated $\mathbb F_p$-scheme with local finite $p$-bases, 2) semi-abelian schemes over a separated irreducible smooth curve.
Let (A,L) be a principally polarized abelian surface of type (1,3). The linear system |L| defines a 6:1 covering of A onto P2, branched along a curve B of degree 18 in P2. The main result of the paper is that for general (A,L) the curve B irreducible, admits 72 cusps, 36 nodes or tacnodes, each tacnode counting as two nodes, 72 flexes and 36 bitangents. The main idea of the proof is to use the fact that for a general (A,L) of type (1,3) the closure of the Severi variety V in |L| is dual to the curve B in the sense of projective geometry. We investigate V and B via degeneration to a special abe…

Let K denote the quadratic field $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d})$ where d=$-1$ or $-3$. Let E be an elliptic curve defined over K. In this paper, we analyze the torsion subgroups of E in the maximal elementary abelian $2$-extension of $K$.
(1,d)-polarized abelian surfaces in P^(d-1) with two plane cubic curve fibrations lie in two elliptic P^2-scrolls. The union of these scrolls form a reducible Calabi-Yau 3-fold. In this paper we show that this occurs when d<10 and analyse the family of such surfaces and 3-folds in detail when d=6. In particular, the reducible Calabi-Yau 3-folds deform in that case to irreducible ones with non-normal singularities.
In this paper we study and relate the non-abelian zeta functions introduced by Weng and invariants of the moduli spaces of arbitrary rank stable pairs over curves. We prove a wall-crossing formula for the latter invariants and obtain an explicit formula for these invariants in terms of the motive of a curve. Previously, formulas for these invariants were known only for rank 2 due to Thaddeus and for rank 3 due to Muñoz. Using these results we obtain an explicit formula for the non-abelian zeta functions, we check the uniformity conjecture by Weng for the ranks 2 and 3, and we prove the countin…
We compare and contrast three different methods for the construction of the differential relations satisfied by the fundamental Abelian functions associated with an algebraic curve. We realize these Abelian functions as logarithmic derivatives of the associated sigma function. In two of the methods, the use of the tau function, expressed in terms of the sigma function, is central to the construction of differential relations between the Abelian functions.
We show how to calculate the Euler characteristic of a local system associated to an irreducible representation of the symplectic group of genus 3 on the moduli space of curves of genus 3 and the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension 3.
For every fibration $f : X \to B$ with $X$ a compact Kähler manifold, $B$ a smooth projective curve, and a general fiber of $f$ an abelian variety, we prove that $f$ has an algebraic approximation.
This paper is an expository survey of results about the effective divisors on moduli spaces, with a focus on what is known about the effective cones of moduli spaces of stable curves and of principally polarized abelian varieties. This version incorporates clarifications and suggestions of Ana-Maria Castravet and the referee, both of whom we thank. To appear in the proceedings of the conference, "Joe at 60:A Celebration of Algebraic Geometry" edited by Brendan Hassett, James McKernan, Jason Starr and Ravi Vakil.
Let f:C -> A be an entire holomorphic curve into a semi-Abelian variety A. Then the Zariski closure of f(C) is a translate of a semi-Abelian subvariety of A (logarithmic Bloch-Ochiai's theorem). The purpose of the present paper is to establish a quantitative version of the above result for such f i.e., the second main theorem and the defect relation.
This paper deals with singularities of genus 2 curves on a general (d_1,d_2)-polarized abelian surface (S,L). In analogy with Chen's results concerning rational curves on K3 surfaces [Ch1,Ch2], it is natural to ask whether all such curves are nodal. We prove that this holds true if and only if d_2 is not divisible by 4. In the cases where d_2 is a multiple of 4, we exhibit genus 2 curves in |L| that have a triple, 4-tuple or 6-tuple point. We show that these are the only possible types of unnodal singularities of a genus 2 curve in |L|. Furthermore, with no assumption on d_1 and d_2, we prove …
In this paper we produce a generating function for the number of hyperelliptic curves (up to translation) on a polarized Abelian surfaces using the crepant resolution conjecture and the Yau-Zaslow formula. We present a formula to compute these in terms of MacMahon's generalized sum-of-divisors functions, and prove that they are quasi-modular forms.
We study the set of isomorphism classes of principal polarizations on abelian varieties of GL2-type. As applications of our results, we construct examples of curves C, C'/\Q of genus two which are nonisomorphic over \bar \Q and share isomorphic unpolarized modular Jacobian varieties over \Q ; we also show a method to obtain genus two curves over \Q whose Jacobian varieties are isomorphic to Weil's restriction of quadratic \Q-curves, and present examples.
Severi varieties and Brill-Noether theory of curves on K3 surfaces are well understood. Yet, quite little is known for curves on abelian surfaces. Given a general abelian surface $S$ with polarization $L$ of type $(1,n)$, we prove nonemptiness and regularity of the Severi variety parametrizing $δ$-nodal curves in the linear system $|L|$ for $0\leq δ\leq n-1=p-2$ (here $p$ is the arithmetic genus of any curve in $|L|$). We also show that a general genus $g$ curve having as nodal model a hyperplane section of some $(1,n)$-polarized abelian surface admits only finitely many such models up to tran…
We develop the theory of Abelian functions associated with cyclic trigonal curves by considering two new cases. We investigate curves of genus six and seven and consider whether it is the trigonal nature or the genus which dictates certain areas of the theory. We present solutions to the Jacobi inversion problem, sets of relations between the Abelian function, links to the Boussinesq equation and a new addition formula.
We provide a theoretical study of Algebraic Geometry codes constructed from abelian surfaces defined over finite fields. We give a general bound on their minimum distance and we investigate how this estimation can be sharpened under the assumption that the abelian surface does not contain low genus curves. This approach naturally leads us to consider Weil restrictions of elliptic curves and abelian surfaces which do not admit a principal polarization.
We study the question of whether algebraic curves of a given genus g defined over a field K must have points rational over the maximal abelian extension K^{ab} of K. We give: (i) an explicit family of diagonal plane cubic curves with Q^{ab}-points, (ii) for every number field K, a genus one curve C_{/Q} with no K^{ab}-points, and (iii) for every g \geq 4 an algebraic curve C_{/Q} of genus g with no Q^{ab}-points. In an appendix, we discuss varieties over Q((t)), obtaining in particular a curve of genus 3 without (Q((t)))^{ab}-points.
We consider normal covers of CP^1 with abelian deck group, branched over at most four points. Families of such covers yield arithmetic Teichmüller curves, whose period mapping may be described geometrically in terms of Schwarz triangle mappings. These Teichmüller curves are generated by abelian square-tiled surfaces. We compute all individual Lyapunov exponents for abelian square-tiled surfaces, and demonstrate a direct and transparent dependence on the geometry of the period mapping. For this we develop a result of independent interest, which, for certain rank two bundles, expresses Lyapunov …
