In this paper, we introduce (local and) global non-abelian zeta functions for general curves. As an example, we compute the so-called rank two zeta functions for genus two curves by studying non-abelian Brill-Noether loci and their infinitesimal structures.
In this paper, we introduce a geometrically stylized arithmetic cohomology for number fields. Based on such a cohomology, we define and study new yet genuine non-abelian zeta functions for number fields, using an intersection stability.
In this paper, it is demonstrated that derived equivalence between smooth, projective, connected schemes that are either surfaces or abelian implies equality of zeta functions.
In this paper, we introduce and study two new types of non-abelian zeta functions for curves over finite fields, which are defined by using (moduli spaces of) semi-stable vector bundles and non-stable bundles. A Riemann-Weil type hypothesis is formulated for zeta functions associated to semi-stable bundles, which we think is more canonical than the other one. All this is motivated by (and hence explains in a certain sense) our work on non-abelian zeta functions for number fields.
This is a survey on motivic zeta functions associated to abelian varieties and Calabi-Yau varieties over a discretely valued field. We explain how they are related to Denef and Loeser's motivic zeta function associated to a complex hypersurface singularity and we investigate the relation between the poles of the zeta function and the eigenvalues of the monodromy action on the tame $\ell$-adic cohomology of the variety. The motivic zeta function allows to generalize many interesting arithmetic invariants from abelian varieties to Calabi-Yau varieties and to compute them explicitly on a model wi…
New local and global non-abelian zeta functions for elliptic curves are studied using certain refined Brill-Noether loci in moduli spaces of semi-stable bundles. Examples of these zeta functions and a justification of using only semi-stable bundles are given too. We end this paper with an appendix on the so-called Weierstrass Groups for general curves, which is motivated by a construction of Euler systems from torsion points (of elliptic curves).
In this paper we study and relate the non-abelian zeta functions introduced by Weng and invariants of the moduli spaces of arbitrary rank stable pairs over curves. We prove a wall-crossing formula for the latter invariants and obtain an explicit formula for these invariants in terms of the motive of a curve. Previously, formulas for these invariants were known only for rank 2 due to Thaddeus and for rank 3 due to Muñoz. Using these results we obtain an explicit formula for the non-abelian zeta functions, we check the uniformity conjecture by Weng for the ranks 2 and 3, and we prove the countin…
Let $\mathfrak{Var}_k^G$ denote the category of pairs $(X,σ)$, where $X$ is a variety over $k$ and $σ$ is a group action on $X$. We define the Grothendieck ring for varieties with group actions as the free abelian group of isomorphism classes in the category $\mathfrak{Var}_k^G$ modulo a cutting and pasting relation. The multiplication in this ring is defined by the fiber product of varieties. This allows for motivic zeta-functions for varieties with group actions to be defined. This is a formal power series $\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}[\text{Sym}^n (X,σ)]t^n$ with coefficients in the Grothendieck rin…
We introduce new non-abelian zeta functions for curves defined over finite fields. There are two types, i.e., pure non-abelian zetas defined using semi-stable bundles, and group zetas defined for pairs consisting of (reductive group, maximal parabolic subgroup). Basic properties such as rationality and functional equation are obtained. Moreover, conjectures on their zeros and uniformity are given. We end this paper with an explanation on why these zetas are non-abelian in nature, using our up-coming works on 'parabolic reduction, stability and the mass'. The constructions and results were anno…
In this paper, we first reveal an intrinsic relation between non-abelian zeta functions and Epstein zeta functions for algebraic number fields. Then, we expose a fundamental relation between stability of lattices and distance to cusps. Next, using these two relations, we explicitly express rank two zeta functions in terms of the well-known Dedekind zeta functions. Finally, based on such an expression, we show that all zeros of rank two non-abelian zeta functions are entirely sitting on the critical line whose real part equals to 1/2. This is an integrated part of our Geo-Arithmetic Program.
In this paper, we develop some basic techniques towards the Riemann hypothesis for higher rank non-abelian zeta functions of an integral regular projective curve of genus $g$ over a finite field $\mathbb F_q$. As an application of the Riemann hypothesis for these genuine zeta functions, we obtain some explicit bounds on the fundamental non-abelian $α$- and $β$-invariants of $X/\mathbb F_q$ in terms of $X$ and $n,\, q$ and $g$: $$α_{X,\mathbb F_q;n}(mn) = \sum_{V}\frac{q^{h^0(X,V)}-1}{\#\mathrm{Aut}(V)} \qquad{\rm and}\qquad β_{X,\mathbb F_q;n}(mn ):= \sum_{V}\frac{1}{\#{\mathrm Aut}(V)}\qquad(…
We define a divisorial motivic zeta function for stable curves with marked points which agrees with Kapranov's motivic zeta function when the curve is smooth and unmarked. We show that this zeta function is rational, and give a formula in terms of the dual graph of the curve.
We prove for abelian varieties a global form of Denef and Loeser's motivic monodromy conjecture, in arbitrary characteristic. More precisely, we prove that for every tamely ramified abelian variety $A$ over a complete discretely valued field, its motivic zeta function has a unique pole at Chai's base change conductor $c(A)$ of $A$, and that the order of this pole equals one plus the potential toric rank of $A$. Moreover, we show that for every embedding of $\Q_\ell$ in $\C$, the value $\exp(2πi c(A))$ is an $\ell$-adic tame monodromy eigenvalue of $A$. The main tool in the paper is Edixhoven's…
We study topological zeta functions of complex plane curve singularities using toric modifications and further developments. As applications of the research method, we prove that the topological zeta function is a topological invariant for complex plane curve singularities, we give a short and new proof of the monodromy conjecture for plane curves.
The purpose of this note is to give a brief overview on zeta functions of curve singularities and to provide some evidences on how these and global zeta functions associated to singular algebraic curves over perfect fields relate to each other.
To count bundles on curves, we study zetas of elliptic curves and their zeros. There are two types, i.e., the pure non-abelian zetas defined using moduli spaces of semi-stable bundles, and the group zetas defined for special linear groups. In lower ranks, we show that these two types of zetas coincide and satisfy the Riemann Hypothesis. For general cases, exposed is an intrinsic relation on automorphism groups of semi-stable bundles over elliptic curves, the so-called counting miracle. All this, together with Harder-Narasimhan, Desale-Ramanan and Zagier's result, gives an effective way to coun…
The Poincare series of an irreducible plane curve singularity equals the zeta function of its monodromy, by a result of Campillo, Delgado and Gusein-Zade. We derive this fact from a formula of Ebeling and Gusein-Zade relating the Poincare series of a quasi-homogeneous complete intersection singularity to the Saito dual of a product of zeta functions.
In general, the L-polynomial of a curve of genus $g$ is determined by $g$ coefficients. We show that the L-polynomial of a supersingular curve of genus $g$ is determined by fewer than $g$ coefficients.
Using analytic torsion associated to stable bundles, we introduce zeta functions for compact Riemann surfaces. To justify the well-definedness, we analyze the degenerations of analytic torsions at the boundaries of the moduli spaces, the singularities of analytic torsions at Brill-Noether loci, and the asymptotic behaviors of analytic torsions with respect to the degree. These new yet intrinsic zetas, both abelian and non-abelian, are expected to play key roles to understand global analysis and geometry of Riemann surfaces, such as the Tamagawa number conjecture for Riemann surfaces, searched …
In this article, we compute the motivic Igusa zeta function of a space monomial curve that appears as the special fiber of an equisingular family whose generic fiber is a complex plane branch. To this end, we determine the irreducible components of the jet schemes of such a space monomial curve. This approach does not only yield a closed formula for the motivic zeta function, but also allows to determine its poles. We show that, while the family of the jet schemes of the fibers is not flat, the number of poles of the motivic zeta function associated with the space monomial curve is equal to th…
The motivic Hilbert zeta function of a variety is the generating function for classes in the Grothendieck ring of varieties of Hilbert schemes of points of the variety. In this paper, the motivic Hilbert zeta function of a reduced curve is shown to be rational.
We consider zeta functions with values in the Grothendieck ring of Chow motives. Investigating the lambda-structure of this ring, we deduce a functional equation for the zeta function of abelian varieties. Furthermore, we show that the property of having a rational zeta function satisfying a functional equation is preserved under products.
The local topological zeta function is a rational function associated to a germ of a complex holomorphic function. This function can be computed from an embedded resolution of singularities of the germ. For nondegenerate functions it is also possible to compute it from the Newton polyhedron. Both ways give rise to a set of candidate poles of the topological zeta function, containing all poles. For plane curves, Veys showed how to filter the actual poles out of the candidate poles induced by the resolution graph. In this note we show how to determine from the Newton polyhedron of a nondegenerat…
In earlier work, the authors described a relation between the Poincaré series and the classical monodromy zeta function corresponding to a quasihomogeneous polynomial. Here we formulate an equivariant version of this relation in terms of the Burnside rings of finite abelian groups and their analogues.
In this paper, we construct an object of the abelian category of mixed Tate motive associated to multiple zeta values. as a consequence, we prove the inequality of the dimension of the vector space generated by multiple zeta values, which is conjectured by Zagier. (Some errors was corrected from the first version. Namely, we changed the definition of the boundary $\bold B^0$.)
In a previous work we have introduced the notion of embedded $\Q$-resolution, which essentially consists in allowing the final ambient space to contain abelian quotient singularities. Here we give a generalization of N. A'Campo's formula for the monodromy zeta function of a singularity in this setting. Some examples of its applications are shown.
Combining the idea of motivic zeta function, due to Kapranov, and Pellikaan's definition of a two- variable zeta function for curves over finite fields in the present note we introduce a motivic two- variable zeta function for curves over arbitrary fields and prove the generalizations of Pellikaan's results in this context.
This is an integrated part of our Geo-Arithmetic Program. In this paper we initiate a geometrically oriented construction of non-abelian zeta functions for curves defined over finite fields by a weighted count of semi-stable bundles. Basic properties such as rationality and functional equation are established. Examples of rank two zetas over genus two curves are given as well. Based on this and motivated by our study for non-abelian zetas of number fields, general non-abelian $L$ functions for function fields are defined and studied using Langlands and Morris' theory of Eisenstein series.
In one of his papers, using arguments about l-adic representations, Taniyama expresses the zeta function of an abelian variety over a number field as an infinite product of modified Artin L-functions. The latter can be further decomposed as products of modified Dedekind zeta functions. After recalling Taniyama's work, we give a simple geometric proof of the resulting product formula for abelian and more general group schemes.
This is an integrated part of our Geo-Arithmetic Program. In this paper we introduce and hence study non-abelian zeta functions and more generally non-abelian $L$-functions for number fields, based on geo-arithmetical cohomology, geo-arithmetical truncation and Langlands' theory of Eisenstein series.
We determine the zeta functions of trinomial curves in terms of Gauss sums and Jacobi sums, and we obtain an explicit formula of the genus of a trinomial curve over a finite field, then we study the conditions for a trinomial curve to be a maximal curve over a finite field.
We introduce new genuine zetas. There are two types, i.e., the pure non- abelian zetas defined using semi-stable bundles, and the group zetas defined for reductive groups. Basic properties such as rationality and functional equation are obtained. Moreover, conjectures on their zeros and uniformity are given.
In this paper we prove trace formulae for the Reidemeister number of a group endomorphism. This result implies the rationality of the Reidemeister zeta function in the following cases: the group is a direct product of a finite group and a finitely generated Abelian group; the group is finitely generated, nilpotent and torsion free. We continue to study analytical properties of the Nielsen zeta function. We connect the Reidemeister zeta function of an endomorphism of a direct product of a finite group and a finitely generated free Abelian group with the Lefschetz zeta function of the induced ma…
We determine what isogeny classes of supersingular abelian surfaces over a finite field k of characteristic 2 contain jacobians. We deal with this problem in a direct way by computing explicitly the zeta function of all supersingular curves of genus 2. Our procedure is constructive, so that we are able to exhibit curves with prescribed zeta function and to count the number of curves, up to k-isomorphism, leading to the same zeta function.
The special uniformity of zeta functions claims that pure non-abelian zeta functions coincide with group zeta functions associated to the special linear groups. Naturally associated are three aspects, namely, the analytic, arithmetic, and geometric aspects. In the first paper of this series, we expose intrinsic geometric structures of our zetas by counting semi-stable bundles on curves defined over finite fields in terms of their automorphism groups and global sections. We show that such a counting maybe read from Artin zetas which are abelian in nature. This paper also contains an appendix wr…
Over the moduli space of rank $n$ semi-stable lattices is a universal family of tori. Along the fibers, there are natural differential operators and differential equations, particularly, the heat equations and the Fokker-Planck equations in statistical mechanics. In this paper, we explain why, by taking averages over the moduli spaces, all these are connected with the zeros of rank $n$ non-abelian zeta functions of the field of rationals, which are known lie on the central line except a finitely many if $n\geq 2$. Certainly, when $n=1$, our current work recovers that of Armitage, which from th…
For $p$ an odd prime number, $q_{0}=p^{t}$, and $q=p^{2t-1}$, let $\mathcal{X}_{\mathcal{G}_{\mathcal{S}}}$ be the nonsingular model of $$ Y^{q}-Y=X^{q_{0}}(X^{q}-X). $$ In the present work, the number of $\mathbb{F}_{q^{n}}$-rational points and the full automorphism group of $\mathcal{X}_{\mathcal{G}_{\mathcal{S}}}$ are determined. In addition, the L-polynomial of this curve is provided, and the number of $\mathbb{F}_{q^{n}}$-rational points on the Jacobian $J_{\mathcal{X}_{\mathcal{G}_{\mathcal{S}}}}$ is used to construct étale covers of $\mathcal{X}_{\mathcal{G}_{\mathcal{S}}}$, some with m…
In [P] R. Pellikaan introduced a two variable zeta-function for a curve over a finite field and proved that it is a rational function. Here we show that its denominator is absolutely irreducible. This is motivated by work of J. Lagarias and E. Rains on an analogous two variable zeta-funtion for number fields.
We show some examples of topological zeta functions associated to an isolated plane curve singular point and an allowed, in the sense of Némethi and Veys, differential form that have several poles of order two. This is in contrast to the case of the standard differential form where, as showed by Veys for plane curves and by Nicaise and Xu in general, there is always at most one pole of order two.
The numerical data of an embedded resolution determine the candidate poles of Igusa's p-adic zeta function. We determine in complete generality which real candidate poles are actual poles in the curve case.
We prove a large sieve statement for the average distribution of Frobenius conjugacy classes in arithmetic monodromy groups over finite fields. As a first application we prove a stronger version of a result of Chavdarov on the ``generic'' irreducibility of the numerator of the zeta functions in a family of curves with large monodromy.
We show that the motivic zeta functions of smooth, geometrically connected curves with no rational points are rational functions. This was previously known only for curves whose smooth projective models have a rational point on each connected component. In the course of the proof we study the class of a Severi-Brauer scheme over a general base in the Grothendieck ring of varieties.
Let X be a complete, geometrically irreducible, singular, algebraic curve defined over a field of characteristic p big enough. Given a local ring O_{P,X} at a rational singular point P of X, we attached a universal zeta function which is a rational function and admits a functional equation if O_{P,X} is Gorenstein. This universal zeta function specializes to other known zeta functions and Poincare series attached to singular points of algebraic curves. In particular, for the local ring attached to a complex analytic function in two variables, our universal zeta function specializes to the gene…
This paper describes a class of Artin-Schreier curves, generalizing results of Van der Geer and Van der Vlugt to odd characteristic. The automorphism group of these curves contains a large extraspecial group as a subgroup. Precise knowledge of this subgroup makes it possible to compute the zeta functions of the curves in the class over the field of definition of all automorphisms in the subgroup. As a consequence, we obtain new examples of maximal curves.
Proposed is a program for what we call Geometric Arithmetic, based on our works on non-abelian zeta functions and non-abelian class field theory. Key words are stability and adelic intersection-cohomology theory.
To an ideal in $\mathbb{C}[x,y]$ one can associate a topological zeta function. This is an extension of the topological zeta function associated to one polynomial. But in this case we use a principalization of the ideal instead of an embedded resolution of the curve. In this paper we will study two questions about the poles of this zeta function. First, we will give a criterion to determine whether or not a candidate pole is a pole. It turns out that we can know this immediately by looking at the intersection diagram of the principalization, together with the numerical data of the exceptional …
We study endomorphisms of complete Noetherian local rings in the context of motivic integration. Using the notion of an auto-arc space, we introduce the (reduced) auto-Igusa zeta series at a point, which appears to measure the degree to which a variety is not smooth that point. We conjecture a closed formula in the case of curves with one singular point, and we provide explicit formulas for this series in the case of the cusp and the node. Using the work of Denef and Loeser, one can show that this series will often be rational. These ideas were obtained through extensive calculations in Sage. …
In this paper we present a p-adic algorithm to compute the zeta function of a nondegenerate curve over a finite field using Monsky-Washnitzer cohomology. The paper vastly generalizes previous work since all known cases, e.g. hyperelliptic, superelliptic and C_{ab} curves, can be transformed to fit the nondegenerate case. For curves with a fixed Newton polytope, the property of being nondegenerate is generic, so that the algorithm works for almost all curves with given Newton polytope. For a genus g curve over F_{p^n}, the expected running time is O(n^3g^6 + n^2g^{6.5}), whereas the space compl…
An invertible polynomial in $n$ variables is a quasihomogeneous polynomial consisting of $n$ monomials so that the weights of the variables and the quasi-degree are well defined. In the framework of the construction of mirror symmetric orbifold Landau--Ginzburg models, P.~Berg\-lund, T.~Hübsch and M.~Henningson considered a pair $(f,G)$ consisting of an invertible polynomial $f$ and an abelian group $G$ of its symmetries together with a dual pair $(\widetilde{f}, \widetilde{G})$. Here we study the reduced orbifold zeta functions of dual pairs $(f,G)$ and $(\widetilde{f}, \widetilde{G})$ and sh…
This article investigates the monodromy conjecture for a space monomial curve that appears as the special fiber of an equisingular family of curves with a plane branch as generic fiber. Roughly speaking, the monodromy conjecture states that every pole of the motivic, or related, Igusa zeta function induces an eigenvalue of monodromy. As the poles of the motivic zeta function associated with such a space monomial curve have been determined in earlier work, it remains to study the eigenvalues of monodromy. After reducing the problem to the curve seen as a Cartier divisor on a generic embedding s…
We will investigate the relationship between Ihara's zeta functions of Ramanujan graphs and Hasse-Weil's congruent zeta functions of modular curves. As an application we will describe the limit value of Hasse-Weil's congruent zeta functions in terms of the corresponding Ramanujan graphs. Moreover we will show a congruence relation of the Fourier coefficients of a normalized Hecke eigenform of weight 2.
