We construct algebraic curves in abelian surfaces by utilizing tropical curves in real tori. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a tropical curve in a real torus to be realizable by an algebraic curve in an abelian surface. When this condition is satisfied, the number of algebraic curves can be computed by a combinatorial formula. This provides the algebraic-tropical correspondence theorem for abelian surfaces analogous to Mikhalkin's correspondence theorem for toric surfaces. Thus, the number of algebraic curves passing through generic points in an abelian surface can be computed purely combinatorially via tropical curves.
We show that the space of theta functions on tropical tori is identified with a convex polyhedron. We also show a Riemann-Roch inequality for tropical abelian surfaces by calculating the self-intersection numbers of divisors.
We investigate the problem of counting tropical genus g curves in g-dimensional tropical abelian varieties. For g = 2, 3, we prove that the tropical count matches the count provided by Göttsche, Bryan-Leung, and Lange-Sernesi in the complex setting.
Tropicalization is a procedure that assigns polyhedral complexes to algebraic subvarieties of a torus. If one fixes a weighted polyhedral complex, one may study the set of all subvarieties of a toric variety that have that complex as their tropicalization. This gives a "tropical realization" moduli functor. We use rigid analytic geometry and the combinatorics of Chow complexes as studied by Alex Fink to prove that when the ambient toric variety is quasiprojective, the moduli functor is represented by a rigid space. As an application, we show that if a polyhedral complex is the tropicalization …
In this paper, second installment in a series of three, we give a correspondence theorem to relate the count of genus $g$ curves in a fixed linear system in an abelian surface to a tropical count. To do this, we relate the linear system defined by a complex curve to certain integrals of 1-forms over cycles in the curve. We then give an expression for the tropical multiplicity provided by the correspondence theorem, and prove the invariance for the associated refined multiplicity, thus introducing refined invariants of Block-Göttsche type in abelian surfaces.
We introduce a moduli functor for varieties whose tropicalization realizes a given weighted fan and show that this functor is an algebraic space in general, and is represented by a scheme of finite type when the associated toric variety is quasiprojective. We study the geometry of these tropical realization spaces for the matroid fans studied by Ardila and Klivans, and show that the tropical realization space of a matroid fan is a torus torsor over the realization space of the matroid. As a consequence, we deduce that these tropical realization spaces satisfy Murphy's Law.
We define a tropicalization procedure for theta functions on abelian varieties over a non-Archimedean field. We show that the tropicalization of a non-Archimedean theta function is a tropical theta function, and that the tropicalization of a non-Archimedean Riemann theta function is a tropical Riemann theta function, up to scaling and an additive constant. We apply these results to the construction of rational functions with prescribed behavior on the skeleton of a principally polarized abelian variety. We work with the Raynaud--Bosch--Lütkebohmert theory of non-Archimedean theta functions for…
Given a tropical fan curve $Σ$ and a family of algebraic curves $X \rightarrow \mathbb{A}^k$ we define the realization locus $\mathop{Real}_Σ\subseteq \mathbb{A}^k$ as the set of fibers $X_a$ whose tropicalization is $Σ$. We produce an algorithm that describes the Zariski closure of $\mathop{Real}_Σ$ by imposing algebraic conditions for each ray of $Σ$.
We construct the logarithmic and tropical Picard groups of a family of logarithmic curves and realize the latter as the quotient of the former by the algebraic Jacobian. We show that the logarithmic Jacobian is a proper family of logarithmic abelian varieties over the moduli space of Deligne-Mumford stable curves, but does not possess an underlying algebraic stack. However, the logarithmic Picard group does have logarithmic modifications that are representable by logarithmic schemes, all of which are obtained by pullback from subdivisions of the tropical Picard group.
For a rational map $ϕ$ from a metric graph $\varGamma$ to a tropical projective space $\boldsymbol{TP^n}$ defined by a ratio of rational functions $f_1, \ldots, f_{n + 1}$, an automorphism $σ$ of $\varGamma$ induces a permutation of the coordinates of $\boldsymbol{TP^n}$ if $\{ f_1, \ldots, f_{n + 1} \}$ is $\langle σ\rangle$-invariant. Through this description, we can realize the automorphism group of $Γ$ as ambient automorphism group such as tropical projective general linear group, tropical general linear group and $\boldsymbol{Z}$-linear transformation group of Euclidean space.
We introduce the notion of tropical curves of hyperelliptic type. These are tropical curves whose Jacobian is isomorphic to that of a hyperelliptic tropical curve, as polarized tropical abelian varieties. We show that this property depends only on the underlying graph of a tropical curve and is preserved when passing to genus $\geq 2$ connected minors. The main result is an excluded minors characterization of tropical curves of hyperelliptic type.
In this thesis, we study the Berkovich skeleton of an algebraic curve over a discretely valued field $K$. We do this using coverings $C\rightarrow{\mathbb{P}^{1}}$ of the projective line. To study these coverings, we take the Galois closure of the corresponding injection of function fields $K(\mathbb{P}^{1})\rightarrow{K(C)}$, giving a Galois morphism $\overline{C}\rightarrow{\mathbb{P}^{1}}$. A theorem by Liu and Lorenzini tells us how to associate to this morphism a Galois morphism of semistable models $\mathcal{C}\rightarrow{\mathcal{D}}$. That is, we make the branch locus disjoint in the s…
We show that the l-adic realization functor is conservative when restricted to the Chow motives of abelian type over a finite field. A weak version of this conservativity result extends to mixed motives of abelian type.
We use Burgos theory of arithmetic Chow groups to exhibit a realization of the degree zero part of the polylogarithm on abelian schemes in Deligne-Beilinson cohomology.
Bordifications of the moduli spaces of tropical curves and abelian varieties, and unstable cohomology of $\mathrm{GL}_g(\mathbb{Z})$ and $\mathrm{SL}_g(\mathbb{Z})$
We construct the moduli spaces of tropical curves and tropical principally polarized abelian varieties, working in the category of (what we call) stacky fans. We define the tropical Torelli map between these two moduli spaces and we study the fibers (tropical Torelli theorem) and the image of this map (tropical Schottky problem). Finally we determine the image of the planar tropical curves via the tropical Torelli map and we use it to give a positive answer to a question raised by Namikawa on the compactified classical Torelli map.
We compactify the classical moduli variety $A_g$ of principally polarized abelian varieties of complex dimension $g$ by attaching the moduli of flat tori of real dimensions at most $g$ in an explicit manner. Equivalently, we explicitly determine the Gromov-Hausdorff limits of principally polarized abelian varieties. This work is analogous to the first of our series (available at arXiv:1406.7772v2), which compactified the moduli of curves by attaching the moduli of metrized graphs. Then, we also explicitly specify the Gromov-Hausdorff limits along holomorphic family of abelian varieties and sho…
Each metric graph has canonically associated to it a polarized real torus called its tropical Jacobian. A fundamental real-valued invariant associated to each polarized real torus is its tropical moment. We give an explicit and efficiently computable formula for the tropical moment of a tropical Jacobian in terms of potential theory on the underlying metric graph. We show that there exists a universal linear relation between the tropical moment, the tau invariant, and the total length of a metric graph. We argue that this linear relation is a non-archimedean analogue of a recent remarkable ide…
The tropical semifield, i.e., the real numbers enhanced by the operations of addition and maximum, serves as a base of tropical mathematics. Addition is an abelian group operation, whereas the maximum defines an idempotent semigroup structure. We address the question of the geometry of idempotent semigroups, in particular, tropical algebraic sets carrying the structure of a commutative idempotent semigroup. We show that commutative idempotent semigroups are contractible, that systems of tropical polynomials, formed from univariate monomials, define subsemigroups with respect to coordinate-wise…
We use recent results by Bainbridge-Chen-Gendron-Grushevsky-Moeller on compactifications of strata of abelian differentials to give a comprehensive solution to the realizability problem for effective tropical canonical divisors in equicharacteristic zero. Given a pair $(Γ, D)$ consisting of a stable tropical curve $Γ$ and a divisor $D$ in the canonical linear system on $Γ$, we give a purely combinatorial condition to decide whether there is a smooth curve $X$ over a non-Archimedean field whose stable reduction has $Γ$ as its dual tropical curve together with a effective canonical divisor $K_X$…
Consider a finite connected graph possibly with multiple edges and loops. In discrete geometric analysis, Kotani and Sunada constructed the crystal associated to the graph as a standard realization of the maximal abelian covering of the graph. As an application of what the author showed in an earlier paper with Seshadri as a by-product of Geometric Invariant Theory, he shows that the Voronoi tiling (also known as the Wigner-Seitz tiling) is hidden in the crystal, that is, the crystal does not intrude the interiors of the top-dimensional Voronoi cells. The result turns out to be closely related…
We study the topology of the tropical moduli space parametrizing stable tropical curves of genus g with n marked points in which the bounded edges have total length 1, and prove that it is highly connected. Using the identification of this space with the dual complex of the boundary in the moduli space of stable algebraic curves, we give a simple expression for the top weight cohomology of M_{1,n} as a representation of the symmetric group and describe an explicit dual basis in homology consisting of abelian cycles for the pure mapping class group.
Let K be an algebraically closed field which is complete with respect to a nontrivial, non-Archimedean valuation and let Λbe its value group. Given a smooth, proper, connected K-curve X and a skeleton Γof the Berkovich analytification X^\an, there are two natural real tori which one can consider: the tropical Jacobian Jac(Γ) and the skeleton of the Berkovich analytification Jac(X)^\an. We show that the skeleton of the Jacobian is canonically isomorphic to the Jacobian of the skeleton as principally polarized tropical abelian varieties. In addition, we show that the tropicalization of a classic…
We show that the non-Archimedean skeleton of the Prym variety associated to an unramified double cover of an algebraic curve is naturally isomorphic (as a principally polarized tropical abelian variety) to the tropical Prym variety of the associated tropical double cover. This confirms a conjecture by Jensen and the first author. We prove a new upper bound on the dimension of the Prym-Brill-Noether locus for generic unramified double covers of curves with fixed even gonality on the base. Our methods also give a new proof of the classical Prym-Brill-Noether Theorem for generic unramified double…
We show that the $\mathbb{Q}$-descents of the canonical $\mathbb{R}$-variation of Hodge structure of Calabi-Yau type over a tube domain of type $A$ can be realized as sub-variations of Hodge structure of certain $\mathbb{Q}$-variations of Hodge structure which are naturally associated to abelian varieties of (generalized) Weil type.
Laman graphs model planar frameworks that are rigid for a general choice of distances between the vertices. There are finitely many ways, up to isometries, to realize a Laman graph in the plane. Such realizations can be seen as solutions of systems of quadratic equations prescribing the distances between pairs of points. Using ideas from algebraic and tropical geometry, we provide a recursive formula for the number of complex solutions of such systems.
The goal of this paper is to construct a category of motivic "sheaves" on an algebraic variety defined over a subfield of C, using Nori's method. This categoryis abelian and it possesses faithful exact realization functors to the categoriesof constructible sheaves for the classical and etale topologies. Moreover, there is a tannakian subcategory of motivic local systems with a realization functor into the category of variations of mixed Hodge structures. Conversely, all basic geometric examples of the latter come from this motivic category.
This thesis establishes a geometric approach to the de Rham realization of the polylogarithm. As a central result we construct the logarithm sheaves of rational abelian schemes in terms of the birigidified Poincaré bundle with universal integrable connection on the product of the abelian scheme and the universal vectorial extension of its dual. This is achieved essentially by restricting the mentioned data of the Poincaré bundle along the infinitesimal neighborhoods of the zero section of the universal extension. We also clarify how these constructions naturally express within the language of …
