We consider operator-valued Herglotz functions and their applications to self-adjoint perturbations of self-adjoint operators and self-adjoint extensions of densely defined closed symmetric operators. Our applications include model operators for both situations, linear fractional transformations for Herglotz operators, results on Friedrichs and Krein extensions, and realization theorems for classes of Herglotz operators. Moreover, we study the concrete case of Schrödinger operators on a half-line and provide two illustrations of Livsic's result [44] on quasi-hermitian extensions in the special case of densely defined symmetric operators with deficiency indices (1,1).
We describe several classes of holomorphic functions of positive real part on the unit ball; each is characterized by an operator-valued Herglotz formula. Motivated by results of J.E. McCarthy and M. Putinar, we define a family of weighted Cauchy-Fantappiè pairings on the ball and establish duality relations between certain pairs of classes, and in particular we identify the dual of the positive Schur class. We also establish the existence of self-dual classes with respect to this pairing, and identify some extreme points of the positive Schur class.
We provide a comprehensive analysis of matrix-valued Herglotz functions and illustrate their applications in the spectral theory of self-adjoint Hamiltonian systems including matrix-valued Schrödinger and Dirac-type operators. Special emphasis is devoted to appropriate matrix-valued extensions of the well-known Aronszajn-Donoghue theory concerning support properties of measures in their Nevanlinna-Riesz-Herglotz representation. In particular, we study a class of linear fractional transformations M_A(z) of a given n \times n Herglotz matrix M(z) and prove that the minimal support of the absolut…
We define and study Toeplitz operators in the space of Herglotz solutions of the Helmholtz equation in $R^d$. As the most traditional definition of Toeplitz operators via Bergman-type projection is not available here, we use an approach based upon the reproducing kernel nature of the Herglotz space and sesquilinear forms, which results in a meaningful theory. For two important patterns of sesquilinear forms we discuss a number of properties, including the uniqueness of determining the symbols from the operator, the finite rank property, the conditions for boundedness and compactness, spectral …
The Bessmertny\uı class consists of rational matrix-valued functions of $d$ complex variables representable as the Schur complement of a block of a linear pencil $A(z)=z_1A_1+\cdots+z_dA_d$ whose coefficients $A_k$ are positive semidefinite matrices. We show that it coincides with the subclass of rational functions in the Herglotz-Agler class over the right poly-halfplane which are homogeneous of degree one and which are Cayley inner. The latter means that such a function is holomorphic on the right poly-halfplane and takes skew-Hermitian matrix values on $(i\mathbb{R})^d$, or equivalently, is…
A complex function $f(z)$ is called a Herglotz-Nevanlinna function if it is holomorphic in the upper half-plane ${\mathbb C}_+$ and maps ${\mathbb C}_+$ into itself. By a maximum principle a Herglotz-Nevanlinna function which takes a real value $a$ in a single point $z_0\in {\mathbb C}_+$ should be identically equal to $a$. In the present note we prove similar invariance results both for the point and the continuous spectra of an operator-valued Herglotz-Nevanlinna function with values in the set of bounded or unbounded linear operators (or relations) in a Hilbert space. The proof of this inva…
New special types of stationary conservative impedance and scattering systems, the so-called non-canonical systems, involving triplets of Hilbert spaces and projection operators, are considered. It is established that every matrix-valued Herglotz-Nevanlinna function of the form V(z)=Q+Lz+\int_{\dR}(\frac{1}{t-z}-\frac{t}{1+t^2})dΣ(t) can be realized as a transfer function of such a new type of conservative impedance system. In this case it is shown that the realization can be chosen such that the main and the projection operators of the realizing system satisfy a certain commutativity conditio…
In this note I prove the following property of Herglotz functions, which to my knowledge is new: For a Herglotz function $h(z)$ and a real number $r \in \mathbb R$ define a Herglotz function $g_r(z) = (r - h(z))^{-1}.$ Let $μ_r^{(s)}$ be the singular part of the measure $μ_r$ which corresponds to $g_r(z)$ via the Herglotz representation theorem. Then the measure $\int_0^1 μ_r^{(s)}\,dr$ is absolutely continuous, its density is integer-valued a.e., and moreover the density takes values $0$ or $1$ a.e.
A classical theorem of Herglotz states that a function $n\mapsto r(n)$ from $\mathbb Z$ into $\mathbb C^{s\times s}$ is positive definite if and only there exists a $\mathbb C^{s\times s}$-valued positive measure $dμ$ on $[0,2π]$ such that $r(n)=\int_0^{2π}e^{int}dμ(t)$for $n\in \mathbb Z$. We prove a quaternionic analogue of this result when the function is allowed to have a number of negative squares. A key tool in the argument is the theory of slice hyperholomorphic functions, and the representation of such functions which have a positive real part in the unit ball of the quaternions. We st…
We discuss transfer-function realization for multivariable holomorphic functions mapping the unit polydisk or the right polyhalfplane into the operator analogue of either the unit disk or the right halfplane (Schur/Herglotz functions over either the unit polydisk or the right polyhalfplane) which satisfy the appropriate stronger contractive/positive real part condition for the values of these functions on commutative tuples of strict contractions/strictly accretive operators (Schur--Agler/Herglotz--Agler functions over either the unit polydisk or the right polyhalfplane). As originally shown b…
We consider a certain class of Herglotz-Nevanlinna matrix-valued functions which can be realized as the Weyl-Titchmarsh matrix-valued function of some symmetric operator and its self-adjoint extension. New properties of Weyl -Titchmarsh matrix-valued functions as well as a new version of the functional model in such realizations are presented. In the case of periodic Herglotz-Nevanlinna matrix-valued functions we provide a complete characterization of their realizations in terms of the corresponding functional model. We also obtain properties of a symmetric operator and its self-adjoint extens…
Given a purely contractive matrix-valued analytic function $Θ$ on the unit disc $\bm{D}$, we study the $\mc{U} (n)$-parameter family of unitary perturbations of the operator $Z_Θ$ of multiplication by $z$ in the Hilbert space $L^2_Θ$ of $n-$component vector-valued functions on the unit circle $\bm{T}$ which are square integrable with respect to the matrix-valued measure $\Om_Θ$ determined uniquely by $Θ$ and the matrix-valued Herglotz representation theorem. In the case where $Θ$ is an extreme point of the unit ball of bounded $\bm{M}_n$-valued functions we verify that the $\mc{U} (n)$-paramet…
We study Caratheodory-Herglotz functions whose values are continuous operators from a locally convex topological space which admits the factorization property into its conjugate dual space. We show how this case can be reduced to the case of functions whose values are bounded operators from a Hilbert space into itself.
The theory of symmetric, non-selfadjoint operators has several deep applications to the complex function theory of certain reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces of analytic functions, as well as to the study of ordinary differential operators such as Schrodinger operators in mathematical physics. Examples of simple symmetric operators include multiplication operators on various spaces of analytic functions such as model subspaces of Hardy spaces, deBranges-Rovnyak spaces and Herglotz spaces, ordinary differential operators (including Schrodinger operators from quantum mechanics), Toeplitz operator…
Here Lq-Lp boundedness of integral operator with operator-valued kernels is studied and the main result is applied to convolution operators. Using these results Besov space regularity for Fourier multiplier operator is established.
We study the impedance functions of conservative L-systems with the unbounded main operators. In addition to the generalized Donoghue class $\sM_κ$ of Herglotz-Nevanlinna functions considered by the authors earlier, we introduce "inverse" generalized Donoghue classes $\sM_κ^{-1}$ of functions satisfying a different normalization condition on the generating measure, with a criterion for the impedance function $V_Θ(z)$ of an L-system $Θ$ to belong to the class $\sM_κ^{-1}$ presented. In addition, we establish a connection between "geometrical" properties of two L-systems whose impedance function…
Operator-valued frames are natural generalization of frames that have been used in quantum computing, packets encoding, etc. In this paper, we focus on developing the theory about operator-valued frames for finite Hilbert spaces. Some results concerning dilation, alternate dual, and existence of operator-valued frames are given. Then we characterize the optimal operator-valued frames under the case which one packet of data is lost in transmission. At last we construct the operator-valued frames $\{V_j\}_{j=1}^m$ with given frame operator $S$ and satisfying $V_jV_j^*=α_jI$, where $α_j's$ are po…
In the signal-processing literature, a frame is a mechanism for performing analysis and reconstruction in a Hilbert space. By contrast, in quantum theory, a positive operator-valued measure (POVM) decomposes a Hilbert-space vector for the purpose of computing measurement probabilities. Frames and their most common generalizations can be seen to give rise to POVMs, but does every reasonable POVM arise from a type of frame? In this paper we answer this question using a Radon-Nikodym-type result.
Matrix valued truncated Toeplitz operators act on vector-valued model spaces. They represent a generalization of block Toeplitz matrices. A characterization of these operators analogue to the scalar case is obtained, as well as the determination of the symbols that produce the zero operator.
In this paper, we investigate operator-valued frames with the structure of group-like unitary system. We show the commutant of the group-like unitary system can be characterized in terms of analysis operators associated with all the operator-valued Bessel generators and give some sufficient and necessary conditions to describe when an operator-valued frame generator admits a Parseval dual.
We define a p-norm in the context of quantum random variables, measurable operator-valued functions with respect to a positive operator-valued measure. This norm leads to a operator-valued L^p space that is shown to be complete. Various other norm candidates are considered as well as generalizations of Hölder's inequality to this new context.
We discuss $\mathrm{L}^p$ fiber spaces which appear, e.g., as extrapolation spaces of unbounded multiplication operators which in turn are motivated, for instance, by non-autonomous evolution equations.
We systematically study various aspects of operator-valued multishifts. Beginning with basic properties, we show that the class of multishifts on the directed Cartesian product of rooted directed trees is contained in that of operator-valued multishifts. Further, we establish circularity, analyticity and wandering subspace property of these multishifts. In the rest part of the paper, we study the function theoretic behaviour of operator-valued multishifts. We determine the bounded point evaluation, reproducing kernel structure and the unitary equivalence of operator-valued multishifts with inv…
We establish a characterization of unitary equivalence of two bilateral operator valued weighted shifts with quasi-invertible weights by an operator of diagonal form. We also present an example of unitary equivalence between shifts defined on $\mathbb{C}^2$ which cannot be given by any unitary operator of diagonal form. The paper is concluded with investigation of unitary operators than can give unitary equivalence of bilateral operator valued weighted shifts.
This paper studies matrix-valued truncated Toeplitz operators, which are a vectorial generalisation of truncated Toeplitz operators. It is demonstrated that, although there exist matrix-valued truncated Toeplitz operators without a matrix symbol in $L^p$ for any $p \in (2, \infty ]$, there is a wide class of matrix-valued truncated Toeplitz operators which possess a matrix symbol in $L^p$ for some $p \in (2, \infty ]$. In the case when the matrix-valued truncated Toeplitz operator has a symbol in $L^p$ for some $p \in (2, \infty ]$, an approach is developed which bypasses some of the technical…
The present paper, is devoted to investigation of operator--valued Fourier multiplier theorems from $B_{q_{1},r}^{s}$ to $B_{q_{2},r}^{s}$, optimal embedding of Besov spaces, the separability and positivity of differential operators. Here, we show that these differential operators generate analytic semigroup.
In this paper we characterize Toeplitz matrices with entries in the space of bounded operators on Hilbert spaces $\mathcal{B}(H)$ which define bounded operators acting on $\ell^2(H)$ and use it to get the description of the right Schur multipliers acting on $\ell^2(H)$ in terms of certain operator-valued measures.
We consider weighted composition operators on spaces of analytic functions on the unit disc, which take values in some complex Banach space. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the boundedness and (weak) compactness of weighted composition operators on general function spaces, and in particular on weak vector-valued spaces. As an application, we characterize the weak compactness of these operators between two different vector-valued Bloch-type spaces. This result appears to be new also in the scalar-valued case.
In this paper we provide a unifying approach to the study of Banach ideals of linear and multilinear operators defined, or characterized, by the transformation of vector-valued sequences. We investigate and apply the linear and multilinear stabilities of some frequently used classes of vector-valued sequences.
Operator-valued frames (or g-frames) are generalizations of frames and fusion frames and have been used in packets encoding, quantum computing, theory of coherent states and more. In this paper, we give a new formula for operator-valued frames for finite dimensional Hilbert spaces. As an application, we derive in a simple manner a recent result of A. Najati concerning the approximation of g-frames by Parseval ones. We obtain also some results concerning the best approximation of operator-valued frames by its alternate duals, with optimal estimates.
The current research is devoted to find an affirmative answer to an open question related to $(s,r)-$contractive operators which have been introduced by Ovidiu Popescu.
The Egoroff theorem for measurable $\bold X$-valued functions and operator-valued measures $\bold m: Σ\to L(\bold X, \bold Y)$, where $Σ$ is a $σ$-algebra of subsets of $T \neq \emptyset$ and $\bold X$, $\bold Y$ are both locally convex spaces, is proved. The measure is supposed to be atomic and the convergence of functions is net.
We study small Hankel operators $h_b$ with operator-valued holomorphic symbol $b$ on a class of vector-valued Fock type spaces. We show that the boundedness / compactness of $h_b$ is equivalent to the membership of $b$ to a specific growth space, which is described via a Littlewood-Paley type condition and a Bergman type projection, and estimate the norm of $h_b$. We also establish some properties of duality and density for these Fock spaces.
Let ϕ be an analytic self-map of D and be an analytic operator-valued function on D, where D is the unit disk. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the boundedness and compactness of weighted composition operators W_{ψ,ϕ} on Lip_A(D;X;α) and lip_A(D;X;α), the spaces of analytic X-valued Lipschitz functions f, where X is a complex Banach space and α is in (0, 1].
In this paper, we investigate the nuclear trace of vector-valued Fourier multipliers on the torus and its applications to the index theory of periodic pseudo-differential operators. First, we characterise the nuclearity of pseudo-differential operators acting on Bochner integrable functions. In this regards, we consider the periodic and the discrete cases. We go on to address the problem of finding sharp sufficient conditions for the nuclearity of vector-valued Fourier multipliers on the torus. We end our investigation with two index formulae. First, we express the index of a vector-valued Fou…
Matrix valued asymmetric truncated Toeplitz operator are compression of multiplication operators acting between two model spaces. These are the generalization of matrix valued truncated Toeplitz operators. In this paper we use generalized Crofoot transform to characterize symbol of matrix valued asymmetric truncated Toeplitz operator equal to zero operator.
We show that some matrices are Schur multipliers and this is applied to obtain classes of operator-valued Foguel-Hankel operators similar to contractions. This provides partial answers to a problem of K. Davidson and the second author concerning CAR-valued Foguel-Hankel operators.
The purpose of this article is to study Bohr inequalities involving the absolute values of the coefficients of an operator valued function. To be more specific, we establish an operator valued analogue of a classical result regarding the Bohr phenomenon for scalar valued functions with fixed initial coefficient. Apart from that, operator valued versions of other related and well known results are obtained.
In this paper we extend dyadic shifts and the dyadic representation theorem to an operator-valued setting: We first define operator-valued dyadic shifts and prove that they are bounded. We then extend the dyadic representation theorem, which states that every scalar-valued Calderón-Zygmund operator can be represented as a series of dyadic shifts and paraproducts averaged over randomized dyadic systems, to operator-valued Calderón-Zygmund operators. As a corollary, we obtain another proof of the operator-valued, global T(1) theorem. We work in the setting of integral operators that have R-bound…
We introduce two kinds of operator-valued norms. One of them is an $L(H)$-valued norm. The other one is an $L(C(K))$-valued norm. We characterize the completeness with respect to a bounded $L(H)$-valued norm. Furthermore, for a given Banach space $\textbf{B}$, we provide an $L(C(K))$-valued norm on $\textbf{B}$. and we introduce an $L(C(K))$-valued norm on a Banach space satisfying special properties.
This paper is devoted to the study of operator-valued Triebel-Lizorkin spaces. We develop some Fourier multiplier theorems for square functions as our main tool, and then study the operator-valued Triebel-Lizorkin spaces on $\mathbb{R}^d$. As in the classical case, we connect these spaces with operator-valued local Hardy spaces via Bessel potentials. We show the lifting theorem, and get interpolation results for these spaces. We obtain Littlewood-Paley type, as well as the Lusin type square function characterizations in the general way. Finally, we establish smooth atomic decompositions for th…
We provide a short proof for the twisted multiplicativity property of the operator-valued S-transform. This is my contribution to the topical collection ''Multivariable Operator Theory. The Jörg Eschmeier Memorial'' of Complex Analysis and Operator Theory.
In this paper, we discuss some special properties of operator- valued semicircular random variables including representation of the Cauchy transform of a compactly supported probability measure in terms of their operator-valued Cauchy transforms and existence of nonzero discrete part of their associated distributions.
