New special types of stationary conservative impedance and scattering systems, the so-called non-canonical systems, involving triplets of Hilbert spaces and projection operators, are considered. It is established that every matrix-valued Herglotz-Nevanlinna function of the form V(z)=Q+Lz+\int_{\dR}(\frac{1}{t-z}-\frac{t}{1+t^2})dΣ(t) can be realized as a transfer function of such a new type of conservative impedance system. In this case it is shown that the realization can be chosen such that the main and the projection operators of the realizing system satisfy a certain commutativity condition if and only if L=0. It is also shown that $V(z)$ with an additional condition (namely, $L$ is invertible or L=0), can be realized as a linear fractional transformation of the transfer function of a non-canonical scattering $F_+$-system. In particular, this means that every scalar Herglotz-Nevanlinna function can be realized in the above sense.
Moreover, the classical Livsic systems (Brodskii-Livsic operator colligations) can be derived from $F_+$-systems as a special case when $F_+=I$ and the spectral measure $dΣ(t)$ is compactly supported. The realization theorems proved in this paper are strongly connected with, and complement the recent results by Ball and Staffans.
In this note I prove the following property of Herglotz functions, which to my knowledge is new: For a Herglotz function $h(z)$ and a real number $r \in \mathbb R$ define a Herglotz function $g_r(z) = (r - h(z))^{-1}.$ Let $μ_r^{(s)}$ be the singular part of the measure $μ_r$ which corresponds to $g_r(z)$ via the Herglotz representation theorem. Then the measure $\int_0^1 μ_r^{(s)}\,dr$ is absolutely continuous, its density is integer-valued a.e., and moreover the density takes values $0$ or $1$ a.e.
We consider a certain class of Herglotz-Nevanlinna matrix-valued functions which can be realized as the Weyl-Titchmarsh matrix-valued function of some symmetric operator and its self-adjoint extension. New properties of Weyl -Titchmarsh matrix-valued functions as well as a new version of the functional model in such realizations are presented. In the case of periodic Herglotz-Nevanlinna matrix-valued functions we provide a complete characterization of their realizations in terms of the corresponding functional model. We also obtain properties of a symmetric operator and its self-adjoint extens…
We study linear perturbations of Donoghue classes of scalar Herglotz-Nevanlinna functions by a real parameter $Q$ and their representations as impedance of conservative L-systems. Perturbation classes $\mathfrak M^Q$, $\mathfrak M^Q_κ$, $\mathfrak M^{-1,Q}_κ$ are introduced and for each class the realization theorem is stated and proved. We use a new approach that leads to explicit new formulas describing the von Neumann parameter of the main operator of a realizing L-system and the unimodular one corresponding to a self-adjoint extension of the symmetric part of the main operator. The dynamic…
We construct a class of matrix-valued Schrödinger operators with prescribed finite-band spectra of maximum spectral multiplicity. The corresponding matrix potentials are shown to be stationary solutions of the KdV hierarchy. The methods employed in this paper rely on matrix-valued Herglotz functions, Weyl--Titchmarsh theory, pencils of matrices, and basic inverse spectral theory for matrix-valued Schrödinger operators.
A Borg-type uniqueness theorem for matrix-valued Schrödinger operators is proved. More precisely, assuming a reflectionless potential matrix and spectrum a half-line $[0,\infty)$, we derive triviality of the potential matrix. Our approach is based on trace formulas and matrix-valued Herglotz representation theorems. As a by-product of our techniques, we obtain an extension of Borg's classical result from the class of periodic scalar potentials to the class of reflectionless matrix-valued potentials.
We prove a general Borg-type inverse spectral result for a reflectionless unitary CMV operator (CMV for Cantero, Moral, and Velázquez) associated with matrix-valued Verblunsky coefficients. More precisely, we find an explicit formula for the Verblunsky coefficients of a reflectionless CMV matrix whose spectrum consists of a connected arc on the unit circle. This extends a recent result on CMV operators with scalar-valued coefficients. In the course of deriving the Borg-type result we also use exponential Herglotz representations of Caratheodory matrix-valued functions to prove an infinite sequ…
We introduce the concept of a spectral shift operator and use it to derive Krein's spectral shift function for pairs of self-adjoint operators. Our principal tools are operator-valued Herglotz functions and their logarithms. Applications to Krein's trace formula and to the Birman-Solomyak spectral averaging formula are discussed.
We prove a generalization of the well-known theorems by Borg and Hochstadt for periodic self-adjoint Schrödinger operators without a spectral gap, respectively, one gap in their spectrum, in the matrix-valued context. Our extension of the theorems of Borg and Hochstadt replaces the periodicity condition of the potential by the more general property of being reflectionless (the resulting potentials then automatically turn out to be periodic and we recover Després' matrix version of Borg's result). In addition, we assume the spectra to have uniform maximum multiplicity (a condition automatically…
We examine two kinds of spectral theoretic situations: First, we recall the case of self-adjoint half-line Schrödinger operators on $[a,\infty)$, $a\in\mathbb{R}$, with a regular finite end point $a$ and the case of Schrödinger operators on the real line with locally integrable potentials, which naturally lead to Herglotz functions and $2\times 2$ matrix-valued Herglotz functions representing the associated Weyl-Titchmarsh coefficients. Second, we contrast this with the case of self-adjoint half-line Schrödinger operators on $(a,\infty)$ with a potential strongly singular at the end point $a$.…
The theory of finite-rank perturbations allows for the determination of spectral information for broad classes of operators using the tools of analytic function theory. In this work, finite-rank perturbations are applied to powers of the derivative operator, providing a full account from self-adjoint boundary conditions to computing aspects of the operators' matrix-valued spectral measures. In particular, the support and weights of the Clark (spectral) measures are computed via the connection between matrix-valued contractive analytic functions and matrix-valued nonnegative measures through th…
We study unimodular transformations of conservative $L$-systems. Classes $\sM^Q$, $\sM^Q_κ$, $\sM^{-1,Q}_κ$ that are impedance functions of the corresponding $L$-systems are introduced. A unique unimodular transformation of a given $L$-system with impedance function from the mentioned above classes is found such that the impedance function of a new $L$-system belongs to $\sM^{(-Q)}$, $\sM^{(-Q)}_κ$, $\sM^{-1,(-Q)}_κ$, respectively. As a result we get that considered classes (that are perturbations of the Donoghue classes of Herglotz-Nevanlinna functions with an arbitrary real constant $Q$) are…
The main object of the paper is a symmetric system $J y'-B(t)y=ł\D(t) y$ defined on an interval $\cI=[a,b) $ with the regular endpoint $a$. Let $\f(\cd,ł)$ be a matrix solution of this system of an arbitrary dimension and let $(Vf)(s)=\int\limits_\cI \f^*(t,s)\D(t)f(t)\,dt$ be the Fourier transform of the function $f(\cd)\in L_\D^2(\cI)$. We define a pseudospectral function of the system as a matrix-valued distribution function $\s(\cd)$ of the dimension $n_\s$ such that $V$ is a partial isometry from $L_\D^2(\cI)$ to $L^2(\s;\bC^{n_\s})$ with the minimally possible kernel. Moreover, we find t…
Given a complex, separable Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$, we consider self-adjoint $L^2$-realizations of differential expressions $τ= - (d^2/dx^2) I_{\mathcal{H}} + V(x)$, on half-lines and on the real line (assuming the limit-point property of $τ$ at $\pm \infty$). Here $V$ denotes a bounded operator-valued potential $V(\cdot) \in \mathcal{B}(\mathcal{H})$ such that $V(\cdot)$ is weakly measurable, the operator norm $\|V(\cdot)\|_{\mathcal{B}(\mathcal{H})}$ is locally integrable, and $V(\cdot) = V(\cdot)^*$ a.e. In a nutshell, a Donoghue-type $m$-function $M_{A,\mathcal{N}_i}^{Do}(\cdot)$ assoc…
We provide a systematic study of boundary data maps, that is, 2 \times 2 matrix-valued Dirichlet-to-Neumann and more generally, Robin-to-Robin maps, associated with one-dimensional Schrodinger operators on a compact interval [0,R] with separated boundary conditions at 0 and R. Most of our results are formulated in the non-self-adjoint context. Our principal results include explicit representations of these boundary data maps in terms of the resolvent of the underlying Schrodinger operator and the associated boundary trace maps, Krein-type resolvent formulas relating Schrodinger operators corre…
We develop Weyl-Titchmarsh theory for self-adjoint Schrödinger operators $H_α$ in $L^2((a,b);dx;\cH)$ associated with the operator-valued differential expression $τ=-(d^2/dx^2)+V(\cdot)$, with $V:(a,b)\to\cB(\cH)$, and $\cH$ a complex, separable Hilbert space. We assume regularity of the left endpoint $a$ and the limit point case at the right endpoint $b$. In addition, the bounded self-adjoint operator $α= α^* \in \cB(\cH)$ is used to parametrize the self-adjoint boundary condition at the left endpoint $a$ of the type $$ \sin(α)u'(a)+\cos(α)u(a)=0, $$ with $u$ lying in the domain of the underl…
Let $A_{Q}$ be the self-adjoint operator defined by the $Q$-function $Q:z\mapsto Q_{z}$ through the Krein-like resolvent formula $$(-A_{Q}+z)^{-1}= (-A_{0}+z)^{-1}+G_{z}WQ_{z}^{-1}VG_{\bar z}^{*}\,,\quad z\in Z_{Q}\,,$$ where $V$ and $W$ are bounded operators and $$Z_{Q}:=\{z\inρ(A_{0}):\text{$Q_{z}$ and $Q_{\bar z }$ have a bounded inverse}\}\,.$$ We show that $$Z_{Q}\not=\emptyset\quad\Longrightarrow\quad Z_{Q}=ρ(A_{0})\cap ρ(A_{Q})\,.$$ We do not suppose that $Q$ is represented in terms of a uniformly strict, operator-valued Nevanlinna function (equivalently, we do not assume that $Q$ is as…
A complete analysis of the essential spectrum of matrix-differential operators $\mathcal A$ of the form \begin{align} \begin{pmatrix} -\displaystyle{\frac{\rm d}{\rm d t}} p \displaystyle{\frac{\rm d}{\rm d t}} + q & -\displaystyle{\frac{\rm d}{\rm d t}} b^* \! + c^* \\[2mm] \hspace{6mm} b \displaystyle{\frac{\rm d}{\rm d t}} + c & \hspace{4mm} D \end{pmatrix} \quad \text{in } \ L^2((α, β)) \oplus \bigl(L^2((α, β))\bigr)^n \label{mo} \end{align} singular at $β\in\mathbb R\cup\{\infty\}$ is given; the coefficient functions $p$, $q$ are scalar real-valued with $p>0$, $b$, $c$ are vector-valued, …
Given a self-adjoint operator $H_0$ and a relatively $H_0$-compact self-adjoint operator $V,$ the functions $r_j(z) = - σ_j^{-1}(z),$ where $σ_j(z)$ are eigenvalues of the compact operator $(H_0-z)^{-1}V,$ bear a lot of important information about the pair $H_0$ and $V.$ We call them coupling resonances. In case of rank one (and positive) perturbation $V,$ there is only one coupling resonance function, which is a Herglotz function. This case has been studied in depth in the literature, and appears in different situations, such as Sturm-Liouville theory, random Schrödinger operators, harnomic a…
We explore connections between Krein's spectral shift function $ξ(λ,H_0,H)$ associated with the pair of self-adjoint operators $(H_0,H)$, $H=H_0+V$ in a Hilbert space $\calH$ and the recently introduced concept of a spectral shift operator $Ξ(J+K^*(H_0-λ-i0)^{-1}K)$ associated with the operator-valued Herglotz function $J+K^*(H_0-z)^{-1}K$, $\Im(z)>0$ in $\calH$, where $V=KJK^*$ and $J=\sgn(V)$. Our principal results include a new representation for $ξ(λ,H_0,H)$ in terms of an averaged index for the Fredholm pair of self-adjoint spectral projections $(E_{J+A(λ)+tB(λ)}((-\infty,0)),E_J((-\infty…
