Let $X$ be a Banach space and $(Ω,Σ)$ be a measure space. We provide a characterization of sequences in the space of $X$-valued countably additive measures on $Ω,Σ)$ of bounded variation that generate complemented copies of $\ell_1$. As application, we prove that if a dual Banach space $E^*$ has Pełczyński's property (V*) then so does the space of $E^*$-valued countably additive measures with bounded variation. Another application, we show that for a Banach space $X$, the space $\ell_\infty(X)$ contains a complemented copy of $\ell_1$ if and only if $X$ contains all $\ell_1^n$ uniformly complemented.
The present paper contributes to the ongoing programme of quantification of isomorphic Banach space theory focusing on Pełczyński's classical work on dual Banach spaces containing $L_{1}$ ($=L_{1}[0,1]$) and the Hagler--Stegall characterisation of dual spaces containing complemented copies of $L_{1}$. We prove the following quantitative version of the Hagler--Stegall theorem asserting that for a Banach space $X$ the following statements are equivalent: $\bullet$ $X$ contains almost isometric copies of $(\bigoplus_{n=1}^{\infty} \ell_{\infty}^{n})_{\ell_1}$, $\bullet$ for all $\varepsilon>0$, $…
Let $X$ be a Banach space and $(f_n)_n$ be a bounded sequence in $L^1(X)$. We prove a complemented version of the celebrated Talagrand's dichotomy i.e we show that if $(e_n)_n$ denotes the unit vector basis of $c_0$, there exists a sequence $g_n \in \text{conv}(f_n,f_{n+1},\dots)$ such that for almost every $ω$, either the sequence $(g_n(ω) \otimes e_n)$ is weakly Cauchy in $X \widehat{\otimes}_πc_0$ or it is equivalent to the unit vector basis of $\ell^1$. We then get a criterion for a bounded sequence to contain a subsequence equivalent to a complemented copy of $\ell^1$ in $L^1(X)$. As an a…
Nonreflexive Banach spaces that are complemented in their bidual by an L-projection - like preduals of von Neumann algebras or the Hardy space $H^1$ - contain, roughly speaking, many copies of $l^1$ which are very close to isometric copies. Such $l^1$-copies are known to fail the fixed point property. Similar dual results hold for $c_0$.
Suppose $X$ is a real or complexified Banach space containing a complemented copy of $\ell_p$, $p\in(1,2)$, and a copy (not necessarily complemented) of either $\ell_q$, $q\in(p,\infty)$, or $c_0$. Then $\mathcal{L}(X)$ and $\mathcal{L}(X^*)$ each admit continuum many closed ideals. If in addition $q\geq p'$, $\frac{1}{p}+\frac{1}{p'}=1$, then the closed ideals of $\mathcal{L}(X)$ and $\mathcal{L}(X^*)$ each fail to be linearly ordered. We obtain additional results in the special cases of $\mathcal{L}(\ell_1\oplus\ell_q)$ and $\mathcal{L}(\ell_p\oplus c_0)$, $1<p<2<q<\infty$.
We introduce and study the notion of space of almost universal complemented disposition (a.u.c.d.) as a generalization of Kadec space. We show that every Banach space with separable dual is isometrically contained as a $1$-complemented subspace of a separable a.u.c.d. space and that all a.u.c.d. spaces with $1$-FDD are isometric and contain isometric $1$-complemented copies of every separable Banach space with $1$-FDD. We then study spaces of universal complemented disposition (u.c.d.) and provide different constructions for such spaces. We also consider spaces of u.c.d. with respect to separa…
An isomorphic (\ell_1)-predual space (X) is constructed such that neither (X) is isomorphic to a subspace of (c_0), nor (C(ω^ω)) is isomorphic to a subspace of (X). It follows that (X) is not isomorphic to a complemented subspace of a (C(K)) space.
Given a compact Hausdorff space $K$ we consider the Banach space of real continuous functions $C(K^n)$ or equivalently the $n$-fold injective tensor product $\hat\bigotimes_{\varepsilon}C(K)$ or the Banach space of vector valued continuous functions $C(K, C(K, C(K ..., C(K)...)$. We address the question of the existence of complemented copies of $c_0(ω_1)$ in $\hat\bigotimes_{\varepsilon}C(K)$ under the hypothesis that $C(K)$ contains an isomorphic copy of $c_0(ω_1)$. This is related to the results of E. Saab and P. Saab that $X\hat\otimes_\varepsilon Y$ contains a complemented copy of $c_0$, …
In this paper we prove some results related to the problem of isomorphically classifying the complemented subspaces of $X_{p}$. We characterize the complemented subspaces of $X_{p}$ which are isomorphic to $X_{p}$ by showing that such a space must contain a canonical complemented subspace isomorphic to $X_{p}.$ We also give some characterizations of complemented subspaces of $X_{p}$ isomorphic to $\ell_{p}\oplus \ell_{2}.$
We show that every Lorentz sequence space $d(\textbf{w},p)$ admits a 1-complemented subspace $Y$ distinct from $\ell_p$ and containing no isomorph of $d(\textbf{w},p)$. In the general case, this is only the second nontrivial complemented subspace in $d(\textbf{w},p)$ yet known. We also give an explicit representation of $Y$ in the special case $\textbf{w}=(n^{-θ})_{n=1}^\infty$ ($0<θ<1$) as the $\ell_p$-sum of finite-dimensional copies of $d(\textbf{w},p)$. As an application, we find a sixth distinct element in the lattice of closed ideals of $\mathcal{L}(d(\textbf{w},p))$, of which only five …
We show that a complemented subspace of a locally convex direct sum of an uncountable collection of Banach spaces is a locally convex direct sum of complemented subspaces of countable subsums. As a corollary we prove that a complemented subspace of a locally convex direct sum of arbitrary collection of $\ell_{1}(Γ)$-spaces is isomorphic to a locally convex direct sum of $\ell_{1}(Γ)$-spaces.
We prove that if $X$ is a complex strictly monotone sequence space with $1$-unconditional basis, $Y \subseteq X$ has no bands isometric to $\ell_2^2$ and $Y$ is the range of norm-one projection from $X$, then $Y$ is a closed linear span a family of mutually disjoint vectors in $X$. We completely characterize $1$-complemented subspaces and norm-one projections in complex spaces $\ell_p(\ell_q)$ for $1 \leq p, q < \infty$. Finally we give a full description of the subspaces that are spanned by a family of disjointly supported vectors and which are $1$-complemented in (real or complex) Orlicz or …
In this article we prove that every isometric copy of C(L) in C(K) is complemented if L is compact Hausdorff of finite height and K is a compact Hausdorff space satisfying the extension property, i.e., every closed subset of K admits an extension operator. The space C(L) can be replaced by its subspace C(L|F) consisting of functions that vanish on a closed subset F of L. We also study the class of spaces having the extension property, establishing some closure results for this class and relating it to other classes of compact spaces.
Let $λ$ be an infinite cardinal number and let $\ell_\infty^c(λ)$ denote the subspace of $\ell_\infty(λ)$ consisting of all functions that assume at most countably many non-zero values. We classify all infinite dimensional complemented subspaces of $\ell_\infty^c(λ)$, proving that they are isomorphic to $\ell_\infty^c(κ)$ for some cardinal number $κ$. Then we show that the Banach algebra of all bounded linear operators on $\ell_\infty^c(λ)$ or $\ell_\infty(λ)$ has the unique maximal ideal consisting of operators through which the identity operator does not factor. Using similar techniques, we …
Cembranos and Freniche proved that for every two infinite compact Hausdorff spaces $X$ and $Y$ the Banach space $C(X\times Y)$ of continuous real-valued functions on $X\times Y$ endowed with the supremum norm contains a complemented copy of the Banach space $c_{0}$. We extend this theorem to the class of $C_p$-spaces, that is, we prove that for all infinite Tychonoff spaces $X$ and $Y$ the space $C_{p}(X\times Y)$ of continuous functions on $X\times Y$ endowed with the pointwise topology contains either a complemented copy of $\mathbb{R}^ω$ or a complemented copy of the space $(c_{0})_{p}=\{(x…
We investigate for which compactifications $γω$ of the discrete space of natural numbers $ω$, the natural copy of the Banach space $c_0$ is complemented in $C(γω)$. We show, in particular, that the separability of the remainder of $γω$ is neither sufficient nor necessary for $c_0$ being complemented in $C(γω)$ (for the latter our result is proved under the continuum hypothesis). We analyse, in this context, compactifications of $ω$ related to embeddings of the measure algebra into $P(ω)/fin$. We also prove that a Banach space $C(K)$ contains a rich family of complemented copies of $c_0$ whenev…
We consider 1-complemented subspaces (ranges of contractive projections) of vector-valued spaces $\ell_p(X)$, where $X$ is a Banach space with a 1-unconditional basis and $p \in (1,2)\cup (2,\infty)$. If the norm of $X$ is twice continuously differentiable and satisfies certain conditions connecting the norm and the notion of disjointness with respect to the basis, then we prove that every 1-complemented subspace of $\ell_p(X)$ admits a basis of mutually disjoint elements. Moreover, we show that every contractive projection is then an averaging operator. We apply our results to the space $\ell…

Main results: (a) If a metric space contains $2n$ elements, the transportation cost space on it contains a $1$-complemented isometric copy of $\ell_1^n$. (b) An example of a finite metric space whose transportation cost space contains an isometric copy of $\ell_\infty^4$. Transportation cost spaces are also known as Arens-Eells, Lipschitz-free, or Wasserstein $1$ spaces.
This work aims to establish new results pertaining to the structure of transportation cost spaces. Due to the fact that those spaces were studied and applied in various contexts, they have also become known under different names such as Arens-Eells spaces, Lipschitz-free spaces, and Wasserstein spaces. The main outcome of this paper states that if a metric space $X$ is such that the transportation cost space on $X$ contains an isometric copy of $\ell_1$, then it contains a $1$-complemented isometric copy of $\ell_1$.
We investigate the geometry of $C(K,X)$ and $\ell_{\infty}(X)$ spaces through complemented subspaces of the form $\left(\bigoplus_{i\in \varGamma}X_i\right)_{c_0}$. Concerning the geometry of $C(K,X)$ spaces we extend some results of D. Alspach and E. M. Galego from \cite{AlspachGalego}. On $\ell_{\infty}$-sums of Banach spaces we prove that if $\ell_{\infty}(X)$ has a complemented subspace isomorphic to $c_0(Y)$, then, for some $n \in \mathbb{N}$, $X^n$ has a subspace isomorphic to $c_0(Y)$. We further prove the following: (1) If $C(K)\sim c_0(C(K))$ and $C(L)\sim c_0(C(L))$ and $\ell_{\infty…
We prove that a WLD subspace of the space $\ell_\infty^c(Γ)$ consisting of all bounded, countably supported functions on a set $Γ$ embeds isomorphically into $\ell_\infty$ if and only if it does not contain isometric copies of $c_0(ω_1)$. Moreover, a subspace of $\ell_\infty^c(ω_1)$ is constructed that has an unconditional basis, does not embed into $\ell_\infty$, and whose every weakly compact subset is separable (in particular, it cannot contain any isomorphic copies of $c_0(ω_1)$).
See title. (A Banach space is said to be L-embedded if it is complemented in its bidual such that the norm between the two complementary subspaces is additive.)
Two normal functionals on a JBW$^*$-triple are known to be orthogonal if and only if they are $L$-orthogonal (meaning that they span an isometric copy of $\ell_1(2)$). This is shown to be stable under small norm perturbations in the following sense: if the linear span of the two functionals is isometric up to $δ>0$ to $\ell_1(2)$, then the functionals are less far (in norm) than $\eps>0$ from two orthogonal functionals, where $\eps\to0$ as $δ\to0$. Analogous statements for finitely and even infinitely many functionals hold as well. And so does a corresponding statement for non-normal functiona…
We give several structural results concerning the Lipschitz-free spaces $\mathcal F(M)$, where $M$ is a metric space. We show that $\mathcal F(M)$ contains a complemented copy of $\ell_1(Γ)$, where $Γ=\text{dens}(M)$. If $\mathcal N$ is the net in a finite dimensional Banach space $X$, we show that $\mathcal F(\mathcal N)$ is isomorphic to its square. If $X$ contains a complemented copy of $\ell_p, c_0$ then $\mathcal F(\mathcal N)$ is isomorphic to its $\ell_1$-sum. Finally, we prove that for all $X\cong C(K)$ spaces $\mathcal F(\mathcal N)$ are mutually isomorphic spaces with a Schauder basi…
We will show that an unconditional basis in a Banach space is equivalent to the unit vector basis of $c_0$ or $\ell_p$ for $1\le p < \infty$ if and only if all finitely supported blocks of the basis generated by a unit vector and its dual basis are uniformly equivalent to the basis or all such blocks are uniformly complemented.
Suppose $Π_1(E, F)$ is the space of all absolutely 1-summing operators between two Banach spaces $E$ and $F$. We show that if $F$ has a copy of $c_0$, then $Π_1(E, F)$ will have a copy of $c_0$, and under some conditions if $E$ has a copy of $\ell_1$ then $Π_1(E, F)$ would have a complemented copy of $\ell_1$.
We introduce the class of slicely countably determined Banach spaces which contains in particular all spaces with the RNP and all spaces without copies of $\ell_1$. We present many examples and several properties of this class. We give some applications to Banach spaces with the Daugavet and the alternative Daugavet properties, lush spaces and Banach spaces with numerical index 1. In particular, we show that the dual of a real infinite-dimensional Banach with the alternative Daugavet property contains $\ell_1$ and that operators which do not fix copies of $\ell_1$ on a space with the alternati…
We prove a number of results concerning the embedding of a Banach lattice $X$ into an r.i. space $Y$. For example we show that if $Y$ is an r.i. space on $[0,\infty)$ which is $p$-convex for some $p>2$ and has nontrivial concavity then any Banach lattice $X$ which is $r$-convex for some $r>2$ and embeds into $Y$ must embed as a sublattice. Similar conclusions can be drawn under a variety of hypotheses on $Y$; if $X$ is an r.i. space on $[0,1]$ one can replace the hypotheses of $r$-convexity for some $r>2$ by $X\neq L_2.$ We also show that if $Y$ is an order-continuous Banach lattice which cont…
By a result of Johnson, the Banach space $F=(\bigoplus_{n=1}^\infty \ell_1^n)_{\ell_\infty}$ contains a complemented copy of $\ell_1$. We identify $F$ with a complemented subspace of the space of (bounded, linear) operators on the reflexive space $(\bigoplus_{n=1}^\infty \ell_1^n)_{\ell_p}$ ($p\in (1,\infty))$, thus giving a negative answer to the problem posed in the monograph of Diestel and Uhl which asks whether the space of operators on a reflexive Banach space is Grothendieck.
We show that a subspace of of $\ell_\infty^N$ of dimension $n>(\log N\log \log N)^2$ contains $2$-isomorphic copies of $\ell_\infty^k$ where $k$ tends to infinity with $n/(\log N\log \log N)^2$. More precisely, for every $η>0$, we show that any subspace of $\ell_\infty^N$ of dimension $n$ contains a subspace of dimension $m=c(η)\sqrt{n}/(\log N\log \log N)$ of distance at most $1+η$ from $\ell_\infty^m$.
We show that the dual of every infinite-dimensional Lipschitz-free Banach space contains an isometric copy of $\ell_\infty$ and that it is often the case that a Lipschitz-free Banach space contains a $1$-complemented subspace isometric to $\ell_1$. Even though we do not know whether the latter is true for every infinite-dimensional Lipschitz-free Banach space, we show that the space is never rotund. Further, in the last section we survey the relations between "isometric embedding of~$\ell_\infty$ into the dual" and "containing as good copy of~$\ell_1$ as possible" in a general Banach space.
We calculate ordinal $L_p$ index defined in "An ordinal L_p index for Banach spaces with an application to complemented subspaces of L_p" authored by J. Bourgain, H. P. Rosenthal and G. Schechtman, for Rosenthal's space $X_p$, $\ell_p$ and $\ell_2$. We show a subspace of $L_p$ $(2 < p < \infty)$ non isomorphic to $\ell_2$ embeds in $\ell_p$ if and only if its ordinal index is minimum possible. We also give a sufficient condition for a $\mathcal{L}_p$ subspace of $\ell_p\oplus\ell_2$ to be isomorphic to $X_p$.
The main aim of the present paper is to investigate various structural properties of hyperplanes of $c$, the Banach space of the convergent sequences. In particular, we give an explicit formula for the projection constants and we prove that an hyperplane of $c$ is isometric to the whole space if and only if it is $1$-complemented. Moreover, we obtain the classification of those hyperplanes for which their duals are isometric to $\ell_{1}$ and we give a complete description of the preduals of $\ell_{1}$ under the assumption that the standard basis of $\ell_{1}$ is weak$^{*}$-convergent.
The spaces $W_α$ are the Banach spaces whose duals are isometric to $\ell_1$ and such that the standard basis of $\ell_1$ is $w^*$-convergent to $α\in \ell_1$. The core result of our paper proves that an $\ell_1$-predual $X$ contains isometric copies of all $W_α$, where the norm of $α$ is controlled by the supremum of the norms of the $w^*$-cluster points of the extreme points of the closed unit ball in $\ell_1$. More precisely, for every $\ell_1$-predual $X$ we have $$ r^*(X)=\sup\left\lbrace \left\|g^*\right\|: g^*\in \left(\mathrm{ext}\, B_{\ell_1}\right)'\right\rbrace =\sup \left\lbrace \l…
While the classic separable quotient problem remains open, we survey general results related to this problem and examine the existence of a particular infinitedimensional separable quotient in some Banach spaces of vector-valued functions, linear operators and vector measures. Most of the results presented are consequence of known facts, some of them relative to the presence of complemented copies of the classic sequence spaces c_0 and l_p, for 1 <= p <= \infty. Also recent results of Argyros - Dodos - Kanellopoulos, and Sliwa are provided. This makes our presentation supplementary to a previo…
The Kalton-Peck $Z_2$ space is the derived space obtained from the scale of $\ell_p$ spaces by complex interpolation at $1/2$. If we denote by by $Z_2^{real}$ the derived space obtained from the scale of $\ell_p$ spaces by real interpolation at $(1/2, 1/2)$, we show that $Z_2$ is the complexification of $Z_2^{real}$. We also show that $Z_2^{real}$ shares the most important properties of $Z_2$: it is isomorphic to its dual, it is singular and contains no complemented copies of $\ell_2$.
We show that Rochberg's generalizared interpolation spaces $\mathscr Z^{(n)}$ arising from analytic families of Banach spaces form exact sequences $0\to \mathscr Z^{(n)} \to \mathscr Z^{(n+k)} \to \mathscr Z^{(k)} \to 0$. We study some structural properties of those sequences; in particular, we show that nontriviality, having strictly singular quotient map, or having strictly cosingular embedding depend only on the basic case $n=k=1$. If we focus on the case of Hilbert spaces obtained from the interpolation scale of $\ell_p$ spaces, then $\mathscr Z^{(2)}$ becomes the well-known Kalton-Peck $Z…
Motivated by a problem stated by S.A.Argyros and Th. Raikoftsalis, we introduce a new class of Banach spaces. Namely, for a sequence of separable Banach spaces $(X_n,\|\cdot\|_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$, we define the Bourgain Delbaen $\mathcal{L}^{\infty}$-sum of the sequence $(X_n,\|\cdot\|_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ which is a Banach space $\mathcal{Z}$ constructed with the Bourgain-Delbaen method. In particular, for every $1\leq p<\infty$, taking $X_n=\ell_p$ for every $n\in\mathbb{N}$ the aforementioned space $\mathcal{Z}_p$ is strictly quasi prime and admits $\ell_p$ as a complemented subspace. We s…
We prove that Schlumprecht space $S$ is isomorphic to $(\sum_{k=1}^\infty \oplus \ell_infty ^{n_k})_S $ for any sequence of integers $(n_k)$. We also show that every complemented subspace of $S$ which has some subsymmetric basis, is isomorphic to $S$.
Leonetti proved that whenever $\mathcal I$ is an ideal on $\mathbb N$ such that there exists an~uncountable family of sets that are not in $\mathcal I$ with the property that the intersection of any two distinct members of that family is in $\mathcal I$, then the space $c_{0,\mathcal I}$ of sequences in $\ell_\infty$ that converge to 0 along $\mathcal I$ is not complemented. We provide a shorter proof of a more general fact that the quotient space $\ell_\infty / c_{0,\mathcal I}$ does not even embed into $\ell_\infty$.
We characterize norm one complemented subspaces of Orlicz sequence spaces $\ell_M$ equipped with either Luxemburg or Orlicz norm, provided that the Orlicz function $M$ is sufficiently smooth and sufficiently different from the square function. This paper concentrates on the more difficult real case, the complex case follows from previously known results.
We improve the known results about the complexity of the relation of isomorphism between separable Banach spaces up to Borel reducibility, and we achieve this using the classical spaces $c_0$, $\ell_p$ and $L_p$, $1 \leq p <2$. More precisely, we show that the relation $E_{K_σ}$ is Borel reducible to isomorphism and complemented biembeddability between subspaces of $c_0$ or $\ell_p, 1 \leq p <2$. We show that the relation $E_{K_σ} \otimes =^+$ is Borel reducible to isomorphism, complemented biembeddability, and Lipschitz equivalence between subspaces of $L_p, 1 \leq p <2$.
Krivine and Maurey proved in 1981 that every stable Banach space contains almost isometric copies of $\ell_p$, for some $p\in[1,\infty)$. In 1983, Raynaud showed that if a Banach space uniformly embeds into a superstable Banach space, then $X$ must contain an isomorphic copy of $\ell_p$, for some $p\in[1,\infty)$. In these notes, we show that if a Banach space coarsely embeds into a superstable Banach space, then $X$ has a spreading model isomorphic to $\ell_p$, for some $p\in[1,\infty)$. In particular, we obtain that there exist reflexive Banach spaces which do not coarsely embed into any sup…
We examine some structural properties of (injective and projective) tensor products of $\ell_p$-spaces (projections, complemented subspaces, reflexivity, isomorphisms, etc.). We combine these results with combinatorial arguments to address the question of primarity for these spaces and their duals. Our main results are: \medbreak \item{(1)} If $1<p<\infty$, then $B(\ell_p)\approx B(L_p)$ ($B(X)$ consists of the bounded linear operators on $X$). \medbreak \item{(2)} If ${1\over p_i}+{1\over p_j}\leq1$ for every $i\neq j$, or if all of the $p_i$'s are equal, then $\ell_{p_1}\hat{\otimes}\cdots \…
Let $X^*$ denote a Banach space with a subsymmetric weak$^*$ Schauder basis satisfying condition~\eqref{eq:condition-c}. We show that for any operator $T : X^*\to X^*$, either $T(X^*)$ or $(I-T)(X^*)$ contains a subspace that is isomorphic to $X^*$ and complemented in $X^*$. Moreover, we prove that $\ell^p(X^*)$, $1\leq p \leq \infty$ is primary.
A Banach space is said to have the ball-covering property (abbreviated BCP) if its unit sphere can be covered by countably many closed, or equivalently, open balls off the origin. Let $K$ be a locally compact Hausdorff space and $X$ be a Banach space. In this paper, we give a topological characterization of BCP, that is, the continuous function space $C_0(K)$ has the (uniform) BCP if and only if $K$ has a countable $π$-basis. Moreover, we give the stability theorem: the vector-valued continuous function space $C_0(K,X)$ has the (strong or uniform) BCP if and only if $K$ has a countable $π$-bas…
Our goal in this paper is to continue the study initiated by the authors in [Lipschitz free $p$-spaces for $0<p<1$; arXiv:1811.01265 [math.FA]] of the geometry of the Lipschitz free $p$-spaces over quasimetric spaces for $0<p\le1$, denoted $\mathcal F_{p}(\mathcal M)$. Here we develop new techniques to show that, by analogy with the case $p=1$, the space $\ell_{p}$ embeds isomorphically in $\mathcal F_{p}(\mathcal M)$ for $0<p<1$. Going further we see that despite the fact that, unlike the case $p=1$, this embedding need not be complemented in general, complementability of $\ell_{p}$ in a Lips…
We study different aspects of the connections between local theory of Banach spaces and the problem of the extension of bilinear forms from subspaces of Banach spaces. Among other results, we prove that if $X$ is not a Hilbert space then one may find a subspace of $X$ for which there is no Aron-Berner extension. We also obtain that the extension of bilinear forms from all the subspaces of a given $X$ forces such $X$ to contain no uniform copies of $\ell_p^n$ for $p\in[1,2)$. In particular, $X$ must have type $2-ε$ for every $ε>0$. Also, we show that the bilinear version of the Lindenstrauss-Pe…
