We study the dynamics of renormalisation of an interval exchange transformation which features exact scaling (the cubic Arnoux-Yoccoz model). Using a symbolic space that describes both dynamics and scaling, we characterize the periodic points of the scaling map in terms of generalised decimal expansions, where the base is the reciprocal of a Pisot number and the digits are algebraic integers. We establish rigorously some basic facts, and use extensive numerical experimentation to formulate a conjecture.
We show that Sarnak's conjecture on Mobius disjointness holds for interval exchange transformations on three intervals (3-IETs) that satisfy a mild diophantine condition.
In this article we provide sufficient conditions on a self-similar interval exchange map, whose renormalization matrix has complex eigenvalues of modulus greater than one, for the existence of affine interval exchange maps with wandering intervals and semi-conjugate with it. These conditions are based on the algebraic properties of the complex eigenvalues and the complex fractals built from the natural substitution emerging from self-similarity. We show that the cubic Arnoux-Yoccoz interval exchange map satisfies these conditions.
Interval exchange transformations are typically uniquely ergodic maps and therefore have uniformly distributed orbits. Their degree of uniformity can be measured in terms of the star-discrepancy. Few examples of interval exchange transformations with low-discrepancy orbits are known so far and only for $n=2,3$ intervals, there are criteria to completely characterize those interval exchange transformations. In this paper, it is shown that having low-discrepancy orbits is a conjugacy class invariant under composition of maps. To a certain extent, this approach allows us to distinguish interval e…
For almost all interval exchange maps T_0, with combinatorics of genus g>=2, we construct affine interval exchange maps T which are semi-conjugate to T_0 and have a wandering interval.
We exhibit an explicit full measure class of minimal interval exchange maps T for which the cohomological equation $Ψ-Ψ\circ T=Φ$ has a bounded solution $Ψ$ provided that the datum $Φ$ belongs to a finite codimension subspace of the space of functions having on each interval a derivative of bounded variation. The class of interval exchange maps is characterized in terms of a diophantine condition of ``Roth type'' imposed to an acceleration of the Rauzy--Veech--Zorich continued fraction expansion associated to T. The languages generated by interval exchange transformations have been characterized by Ferenczi-Zamboni (2008) and Belov-Cernyatev (2010) under some extra conditions on the system. Lifting these conditions leads us to consider successively natural codings of standard interval exchange transformations, natural codings of affine interval exchange transformations, grouped codings of affine interval exchange transformations, and natural codings of generalized interval exchange transformations. We show that these four classes of languages are strictly increasing, and give necessary and/or sufficie…
There exist uniquely ergodic affine interval exchange transformations of [0,1] with flips having wandering intervals and such that the support of the invariant measure is a Cantor set.
We prove that irreducible, linearly recurrent, type W interval exchange transformations are always mild mixing. For every irreducible permutation the set of linearly recurrent interval exchange transformations has full Hausdorff dimension.
We consider suspension flows built over interval exchange transformations with the help of roof functions having an asymmetric logarithmic singularity. We prove that such flows are strongly mixing for a full measure set of interval exchange transformations.
The Three Gap Theorem states that for any $α\in (0,1)$ and any integer $N \geq 1$, the fractional parts of the sequence $0, α, 2α, \cdots, (N-1)α$ partition the unit interval into $N$ subintervals having at most \emph{three} distinct lengths. We here provide a new proof of this theorem using zippered rectangles, and present a new gaps theorem (along with two proofs) for sequences generated as orbits of general interval exchange transformations. We also derive a number of results on primitive points in lattices mirroring several properties of Farey fractions. This makes it possible to derive a …
We show that minimal shifts with zero topological entropy are topologically conjugate to interval exchange transformations, generally infinite. When these shifts have linear factor complexity (linear block growth), the conjugate interval exchanges are proved to satisfy strong finiteness properties.
We show some results about the Hausdorff dimension of particular minimal but not uniquely ergodic interval exchange transformations. There is an appendix which shows that typical points for two different ergodic measures of an interval exchange can approximate each other differently.
Let E denote the group of all interval exchange transformations on [0,1). Given a suitable topological group structure on E, it is possible to classify all one-parameter interval exchange actions (continuous homomorphisms from R to E). In particular, up to conjugacy in E, any one-parameter interval exchange action factors through a rotational torus action.
We prove linear upper and lower bounds for the Hausdorff dimension set of minimal interval exchange transformations with flips (in particular without periodic points), and a linear lower bound for the Hausdorff dimension of the set of non-uniquely ergodic minimal interval exchange transformations with flips.
A sharp bound on the number of invariant components of an interval exchange transformation is provided. More precisely, it is proved that the number of periodic components n_per and the number of minimal components n_min of an interval exchange transformation of n intervals satisfy n_per+2 n_min\le n. Besides, it is shown that almost all interval exchange transformations are typical, that is, have all the periodic components stable and all the minimal components robust (i.e. persistent under almost all small perturbations). Finally, we find all the possible values for the integer vector (n_per…
We provide a simple description of asymptotic pairs in the subshift associated with an interval exchange transformation and show that, under reasonably general conditions, doubly asymptotic pairs do not occur.
Irreducible interval exchange transformations are studied with regard to whirly property, a condition for non-trivial spatial factor. Uniformly whirly transformation is defined and to be further studied. An equivalent condition is introduced for whirly transformation. We will prove that almost all 3-interval exchange transformations are whirly, using a combinatorics approach with application of the Rauzy-Veech Induction. It is still an open question whether whirly property is a generic property for m-interval exchange transformations (m>=4).
We prove that for any compact connected Lie group G and a typical interval exchange transformation T, not isomorphic to a rotation, the skew product of T with a typical G-valued function, constant on the intervals, is weakly mixing.
The construction of affine interval exchange maps with wandering intervals that are semi-conjugate with a given self-similar interval exchange map is strongly related with the existence of the so called minimal sequences associated with local potentials, which are certain elements of the substitution subshift arising from the given interval exchange map. In this article, under the condition called unique representation property, we characterize such minimal sequences for potentials coming from non-real eigenvalues of the substitution matrix. We also give conditions on the slopes of the affine …
For irreducible interval exchange transformations, we study the relation between the powers of induced map and the induced maps of powers and raise a condition of equivalence between them. And skew production of Rauzy induction map is set up and verified to be ergodic regard to a product measure. Then we prove that almost all the interval exchange transformations are totally rank one (rank one for all powers of positive integers) by interval. As a corollary, for almost all interval exchange transformations, rank one transformations are dense $G_δ$ in the weak closure.
We show that for odd-valued piecewise-constant skew products over a certain two parameter family of interval exchanges, the skew product is ergodic for a full-measure choice of parameters.
For an interval exchange map, the number of discontinuities of its iterates either exhibits linear growth or is bounded. This dichotomy is used to prove that the group of interval exchanges does not contain distortion elements, giving examples of groups that do not act faithfully via interval exchanges. As a further application of this dichotomy, a classification of centralizers in the group of interval exchanges is given. This classification of centralizers is used to compute the automorphism group of the interval exchange group.
We prove that the solutions of the cohomological equation for Roth type interval exchange maps are Hölder continuous provided that the datum is of class $C^r$ with $r>1$ and belongs to a finite-codimension linear subspace.
We show that a typical interval exchange transformation is either weakly mixing or it is an irrational rotation. We also conclude that a typical translation flow on a surface of genus $g \geq 2$ (with prescribed singularity types) is weakly mixing.
Starting from any pseudo-Anosov map $φ$ on a surface of genus $g \geqslant 2$, we construct explicitly a family of Derived from pseudo-Anosov maps $f$ by adapting the construction of Smale's Derived from Anosov maps on the two-torus. This is done by perturbing $φ$ at some fixed points. We first consider perturbations at every conical fixed point and then at regular fixed points. We establish the existence of a measure $μ$, supported by the non-trivial unique minimal component of the stable foliation of $f$, with respect to which $f$ is mixing. In the process, we construct a uniquely ergodic Ge…
We look at interval exchange transformations defined as first return maps on the set of diagonals of a flow of direction $θ$ on a square-tiled surface: using a combinatorial approach, we show that, when the surface has at least one true singularity both the flow and the interval exchange are rigid if and only if tan $θ$ has bounded partial quotients. Moreover, if all vertices of the squares are singularities of the flat metric, and tan $θ$ has bounded partial quotients, the square-tiled interval exchange transformation T is not of rank one. Finally, for another class of surfaces, those defined…
We extend some results of Marmi--Moussa--Yoccoz on the cohomological equations and local conjugacy classes of interval exchange maps of restricted Roth type. In particular, we answer a question of Krikorian about the codimension of the local conjugacy class of self-similar interval exchange maps associated to the Eierlegende Wollmilchsau and the Ornithorynque.
We define a diophantine condition for interval exchange transformations (i.e.t.s). When the number of intervals is two, that is for rotations on the circle, our condition coincides with classical Khinchin condition. We prove for i.e.t.s the same dichotomy as in Khinchin Theorem. We also develop several results relating the Rauzy-Veech algorithm with homogeneous approximations for i.e.t.s.
The Arnoux-Rauzy systems are defined in \cite{ar}, both as symbolic systems on three letters and exchanges of six intervals on the circle. In connection with a conjecture of S.P. Novikov, we investigate the dynamical properties of the interval exchanges, and precise their relation with the symbolic systems, which was known only to be a semi-conjugacy; in order to do this, we define a new system which is an exchange of nine intervals on the line (it was described in \cite{abb} for a particular case). Our main result is that the semi-conjugacy determines a measure-theoretic isomorphism (between …
We prove a spatial limit theorem for generic interval exchange transformations (IETs): for a generic IET the normalized ergodic sums of a sufficiently regular (e.g., Lipschitz) function have the same asymptotic behavior of distributions as the behaviour of ergodic integrals for a generic translation flow on a flat surface, described by A. Bufetov.
In this article we study local rigidity properties of generalised interval exchange maps using renormalisation methods. We study the dynamics of the renormalisation operator $\mathcal{R}$ acting on the space of $\mathcal{C}^{3}$-generalised interval exchange transformations at fixed points (which are standard periodic type IETs). We show that $\mathcal{R}$ is hyperbolic and that the number of unstable direction is exactly that predicted by the ergodic theory of IETs and the work of Forni and Marmi-Moussa-Yoccoz. As a consequence we prove that the local $\mathcal{C}^1$-conjugacy class of a peri…
Irrational numbers of bounded type have several equivalent characterizations. They have bounded partial quotients in terms of arithmetic characterization and in the dynamics of the circle rotation, the rescaled recurrence time to $r$-ball of the initial point is bounded below. In this paper, we consider how the bounded type condition of irrational is generalized into interval exchange maps.
I show that there exist minimal interval exchange transformations with an ergodic measure whose Hausdorff dimension is arbitrarily small, even 0. I will also show that in particular cases one can bound the Hausdorff dimension between $\frac 1 {2r+4}$ and $\frac 1 r$ for any r greater than 1.
We study the group of interval exchange transformations. Let $T$ be an $m$-interval exchange transformation. By the rank of $T$ we mean the dimension of the $\mathbb{Q}$-vector space spanned by the lengths of the exchanged subintervals. We prove that if $T$ satisfies Keane's infinite distinct orbit condition and $\text{rank}(T)>1+\lfloor m/2 \rfloor$ then the only interval exchange transformations which commute with $T$ are its powers. In the case that $T$ is a minimal 3-interval exchange transformation, we prove a more precise result: $T$ has a trivial centralizer in the group of interval exc…
We give conditions for minimality of $\mathbb Z/N\mathbb Z$ extensions of a rotation of angle $α$ with one marked point, solving the problem for any prime $N$: for $N=2$, these correspond to the Veech 1969 examples, for which a necessary and sufficient condition was not known yet. We provide also a word combinatorial criterion of minimality valid for general interval exchange transformations, which applies to $\mathbb Z/N\mathbb Z$ extensions of any interval exchange transformation with any number of marked points. Then we give a condition for unique ergodicity of these extensions when the ini…
In this article we prove that given a self-similar interval exchange transformation T, whose associated matrix verifies a quite general algebraic condition, there exists an affine interval exchange transformation with wandering intervals that is semi-conjugated to it. That is, in this context the existence of Denjoy counterexamples occurs very often, generalizing the result of M. Cobo in [C].
This article provides optimal constants for two quantitative recurrence problems. First of all for recurrence of maps of the interval [0,1] that preserve the Lebesgue measure and on the other hand Lagrange spectrum of interval exchange transformations. Both results are based on a non-conventional packing problem in the plane with respect to the "pseudo-norm" N(x,y) = sqrt(|xy|).
A disjoint rotation map is an interval exchange transformation (IET) on the unit interval that acts by rotation on a finite number of invariant subintervals. It is currently unknown whether the group E of all IETs possesses any non-abelian free subgroups. It is shown that it is not possible for a disjoint rotation map to occur in a subgroup of E that is isomorphic to a non-abelian free group.
We consider the restriction of interval exchange transformations to algebraic number fields, which leads to maps on lattices. We characterize renormalizability arithmetically, and study its relationships with a geometrical quantity that we call the drift vector. We exhibit some examples of renormalizable interval exchange maps with zero and non-zero drift vector, and carry out some investigations of their properties. In particular, we look for evidence of the finite decomposition property: each lattice is the union of finitely many orbits.
We consider interval exchange transformations of periodic type and construct different classes of recurrent ergodic cocycles of dimension $\geq 1$ over this special class of IETs. Then using Poincaré sections we apply this construction to obtain recurrence and ergodicity for some smooth flows on non-compact manifolds which are extensions of multivalued Hamiltonian flows on compact surfaces.
Let $f\colon X\to X$, $X=[0,1)$, be an ergodic IET (interval exchange transformation) relative to the Lebesgue measure on $X$. Denote by $f_t\colon X_t\to X_t$ the IET obtained by inducing $f$ to the subinterval $X=[0,t)$, $0<t<1$. We show that \[ \{0<t<1\mid f_{t} \text{is weakly mixing}\} \] is a residual subset of $X$ of full Lebesgue measure. The result is proved by establishing a generic Diophantine sufficient condition on $t$ for $f_{t}$ to be weakly mixing.
We study the ergodic properties of compositions of interval exchange transformations and rotations. We show that for any interval exchange transformation T, there is a full measure set of αin [0, 1) so that T composed with R_α is uniquely ergodic, where R_α is rotation by α.
In \cite{B} Bourgain proves that Sarnak's disjointness conjecture holds for a certain class of Three-interval exchange maps. In the present paper we slightly improve the Diophantine condition of Bourgain and estimate the constants in the proof. We further show, that the new parameter set has positive, but not full Hausdorff dimension. This, in particular, implies that the Lebesgue measure of this set is zero.
This paper presents quantitative shrinking target results for rotations and interval exchange transformations. To do this a quantitative version of a unique ergodicity criterion of Boshernitzan is established.
We study the existence of transitive exchange maps with flips defined on the unit circle. We provide a complete answer to the question of whether there exists a transitive exchange map of the unit circle defined on n subintervals and having f flips.
We describe in this article the dynamics of a $1$-parameter family of affine interval exchange transformations. It amounts to studying the directional foliations of a particular affine surface, the Disco surface. We show that this family displays various dynamical behaviours: it is generically dynamically trivial, but for a Cantor set of parameters the leaves of the foliations accumulate to a (transversely) Cantor set. s study is achieved through the analysis the dynamics of the Veech group of this surface combined a modified version of Rauzy induction in the context of affine interval exchang…
The two-dimensional homogeneous Euclidean algorithm is the central motivation for the definition of the classical multidimensional continued fraction algorithms, as Jacobi-Perron, Poincaré, Brun and Selmer algorithms. The Rauzy induction, a generalization of the Euclidean algorithm, is a key tool in the study of interval exchange transformations. Both maps are known to be dissipative and ergodic with respect to Lebesgue measure. Here we prove that they are exact.
Let $T$ be an $m$-interval exchange transformation. By the rank of $T$ we mean the dimension of the $\mathbb{Q}$-vector space spanned by the lengths of the exchanged intervals. We prove that if $T$ is minimal and the rank of $T$ is greater than $1+\lfloor m/2 \rfloor$, then $T$ cannot be written as a power of another interval exchange. We also demonstrate that this estimate on the rank cannot be improved. In the case that $T$ is a minimal 3-interval exchange transformation, we prove a stronger result: $T$ cannot be written as a power of another interval exchange if and only if $T$ satisfies Ke…
We consider generalized interval exchange transformations, or briefly GIETs, that is bijections of the interval which are piecewise increasing homeomorphisms with finite branches. When all continuous branches are translations, such maps are classical interval exchange transformations, or briefly IETs. The well-known Rauzy renormalization procedure extends to a given GIET and a Rauzy renormalization path is defined, provided that the map is infinitely renormalizable. We define full families of GIETs, that is optimal finite dimensional parameter families of GIETs such that any prescribed Rauzy r…
It is proved that almost every interval exchange transformation given by the symmetric permutation 1->m, 2->m-1,..., m-1->2, m->1, where m>1 is an odd number, is disjoint from ELF systems. The notion of ELF systems was introduced to express the fact that a given system is of probabilistic origin; the following standard classes of systems of probabilistic origin enjoy the ELF property: mixing systems, ergodic Gaussian systems, Poisson suspensions, dynamical systems coming from stationary infinitely divisible processes. Some disjointness properties of special flows built over interval exchange t…
