We consider the semiclassical asymptotic behaviour of the number of eigenvalues smaller than $E$ for elliptic operators in $L\sp 2 ({\bf R}\sp d)$. We describe a method of finding remainder estimates related to the volume of the region of the phase space in which the principal symbol takes values belonging to the interval $[E'-h; E'+h]$, where $E'$ is close to $E$. This method allows to derive remainder estimates $O(h\sp {1-d})$ for a class of symbols with critical points and non-smooth coefficients.
In this article, we consider the semiclassical Schrödinger operator $P = - h^{2} Δ+ V$ in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ with confining non-negative potential $V$ which vanishes, and study its low-lying eigenvalues $λ_{k} ( P )$ as $h \to 0$. First, we give a necessary and sufficient criterion upon $V^{-1} ( 0 )$ for $λ_{1} ( P ) h^{- 2}$ to be bounded. When $d = 1$ and $V^{-1} ( 0 ) = \{ 0 \}$, we are able to control the eigenvalues $λ_{k} ( P )$ for monotonous potentials by a quantity linked to an interval $I_{h}$, determined by an implicit relation involving $V$ and $h$. Next, we consider the case where …
This paper is concerned with the asymptotics of resonances in the semiclassical limit $h\to 0^+$ for $2\times 2$ matrix Schrödinger operators in one dimension. We study the case where the two underlying classical Hamiltonian trajectories cross tangentially in the phase space. In the setting that one of the classical trajectories is a simple closed curve whereas the other one is non-trapping, we show that the imaginary part of the resonances is of order $h^{(m_0+3)/(m_0+1)}$, where $m_0$ is the maximal contact order of the crossings. This principal order comes from the subprincipal terms of the…
We continue our study of a magnetic Schrödinger operator on a two-dimensional compact Riemannian manifold in the case when the minimal value of the module of the magnetic field is strictly positive. We analyze the case when the magnetic field has degenerate magnetic wells. The main result of the paper is an asymptotics of the groundstate energy of the operator in the semiclassical limit. The upper bounds are improved in the case when we have a localization by a miniwell effect of lowest order. These results are applied to prove the existence of an arbitrary large number of spectral gaps in the…
We study the spectra of quantum graphs with the method of trace identities (sum rules), which are used to derive inequalities of Lieb-Thirring, Payne-Pólya-Weinberger, and Yang types, among others. We show that the sharp constants of these inequalities and even their forms depend on the topology of the graph. Conditions are identified under which the sharp constants are the same as for the classical inequalities; in particular, this is true in the case of trees. We also provide some counterexamples where the classical form of the inequalities is false.
We consider the Dirichlet Laplace operator on open, quasi-bounded domains of infinite volume. For such domains semiclassical spectral estimates based on the phase-space volume - and therefore on the volume of the domain - must fail. Here we present a method how one can nevertheless prove uniform bounds on eigenvalues and eigenvalue means which are sharp in the semiclassical limit. We give examples in horn-shaped regions and so-called spiny urchins. Some results are extended to Schrödinger operators defined on quasi-bounded domains with Dirichlet boundary conditions.
We consider the Bochner Laplacian on high tensor powers of a positive line bundle on a closed symplectic manifold (or, equivalently, the semiclassical magnetic Schrödinger operator with the non-degenerate magnetic field). We assume that the operator has discrete wells. The main result of the paper states asymptotic expansions for its low-lying eigenvalues.
We consider the stochastic quantization of a quartic double-well energy functional in the semiclassical regime and derive optimal asymptotics for the exponentially small splitting of the ground state energy. Our result provides an infinite-dimensional version of some sharp tunneling estimates known in finite dimensions for semiclassical Witten Laplacians in degree zero. From a stochastic point of view it proves that the $L^2$ spectral gap of the stochastic one-dimensional Allen-Cahn equation in finite volume satisifies a Kramers-type formula in the limit of vanishing noise. We work with finite…
This article gives a simple treatment of the quantum Birkhoff normal form for semiclassical pseudo-differential operators with smooth coefficients. The normal form is applied to describe the discrete spectrum in a generalised non-degenerate potential well, yielding uniform estimates in the energy $E$. This permits a detailed study of the spectrum in various asymptotic regions of the parameters $(E,\h)$, and gives improvements and new proofs for many of the results in the field. In the completely resonant case we show that the pseudo-differential operator can be reduced to a Toeplitz operator o…
We revisit the problem of semiclassical spectral asymptotics for a pure magnetic Schrödinger operator on a two-dimensional Riemannian manifold. We suppose that the minimal value $b_0$ of the intensity of the magnetic field is strictly positive, and the corresponding minimum is unique and non-degenerate. The purpose is to get the control on the spectrum in an interval $(hb_0, h(b_0 +γ_0)]$ for some $γ_0>0$ independent of the semiclassical parameter $h$. The previous papers by Helffer-Mohamed and by Helffer-Kordyukov were only treating the ground-state energy or a finite (independent of $h$) num…
We present asymptotically sharp inequalities for the eigenvalues $μ_k$ of the Laplacian on a domain with Neumann boundary conditions, using the averaged variational principle introduced in \cite{HaSt14}. For the Riesz mean $R_1(z)$ of the eigenvalues we improve the known sharp semiclassical bound in terms of the volume of the domain with a second term with the best possible expected power of $z$. In addition, we obtain two-sided bounds for individual $μ_k$, which are semiclassically sharp. In a final section, we remark upon the Dirichlet case with the same methods.
We obtain sharp uniform bounds on the low lying eigenfunctions for a class of semiclassical pseudodifferential operators with double characteristics and complex valued symbols, under the assumption that the quadratic approximations along the double characteristics are elliptic.
We consider a compact Riemannian manifold with a Hermitian line bundle whose curvature is non-degenerate. The Laplacian acting on high tensor powers (the semiclassical regime) of the bundle exhibits a cluster of low-energy states. We demonstrate that the orthogonal projectors onto these states are the Fourier components of an operator with the structure of the Szegö projector, i.e. a Fourier integral operator of Hermite type. This result yields semiclassical asymptotics for the low-energy eigenstates.
We provide complementary semiclassical bounds for the Riesz means $R_1(z)$ of the eigenvalues of various biharmonic operators, with a second term in the expected power of $z$. The method we discuss makes use of the averaged variational principle (AVP), and yields two-sided bounds for individual eigenvalues, which are semiclassically sharp. The AVP also yields comparisons with Riesz means of different operators, in particular Laplacians.
We compute three-term semiclassical asymptotic expansions of counting functions and Riesz-means of the eigenvalues of the Laplacian on spheres and hemispheres, for both Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. Specifically for Riesz-means we prove upper and lower bounds involving asymptotically sharp shift terms, and we extend them to domains of $\mathbb S^d$. We also prove a Berezin-Li-Yau inequality for domains contained in the hemisphere $\mathbb S^2_+$. Moreover, we consider polyharmonic operators for which we prove analogous results that highlight the role of dimension for Pólya-type in…
We consider semiclassical self-adjoint operators whose symbol, defined on a two-dimensional symplectic manifold, reaches a non-degenerate minimum $b_0$ on a closed curve. We derive a classical and quantum normal form which allows us, in addition to the complete integrability of the system, to obtain eigenvalue asymptotics in a window $(-\infty,b_0+ε]$ for $ε> 0$ independent on the semiclassical parameter. These asymptotics are obtained in two complementary settings: either a symmetry of the system under translation along the curve, or a Morse hypothesis reminiscent of Helffer-Sjöstrand's "mini…
This paper deals with semiclassical asymptotics of the three-dimensional magnetic Laplacian in presence of magnetic confinement. Using generic assumptions on the geometry of the confinement, we exhibit three semiclassical scales and their corresponding effective quantum Hamiltonians, by means of three microlocal normal forms à la Birkhoff. As a consequence, when the magnetic field admits a unique and non degenerate minimum, we are able to reduce the spectral analysis of the low-lying eigenvalues to a one-dimensional $\hbar$-pseudo-differential operator whose Weyl's symbol admits an asymptotic …
We consider a magnetic Schrödinger operator $H^h$, depending on the semiclassical parameter $h>0$, on a two-dimensional Riemannian manifold. We assume that there is no electric field. We suppose that the minimal value $b_0$ of the magnetic field $b$ is strictly positive, and there exists a unique minimum point of $b$, which is non-degenerate. The main result of the paper is a complete asymptotic expansion for the low-lying eigenvalues of the operator $H^h$ in the semiclassical limit. We also apply these results to prove the existence of an arbitrary large number of spectral gaps in the semicla…
In this note, we consider semiclassical scattering on a manifold which is Euclidean near infinity or asymptotically hyperbolic. We show that, if the cut-off resolvent satisfies polynomial estimates in a strip of size $O(h |\log h|^{-α})$ below the real axis, for some $α\geq 0$, then the cut-off resolvent is actually bounded by $O(|\log h|^{α+1} h^{-1})$ in this strip. As an application, we improve slightly the estimates on the real axis given by Bourgain and Dyatlov in the case of convex co-compact surfaces.
I derive sharp semiclassical asymptotics of $\int |e_h(x,y,0)|^2ω(x,y) dx dy$ where $e_h(x,y,τ)$ is the Schwartz kernel of the spectral projector and $ω(x,y)$ is singular as $x=y$. I also consider asymptotics of more general expressions.
We consider semiclassical Schrödinger operators on the real line of the form $$H(\hbar)=-\hbar^2 \frac{d^2}{dx^2}+V(\cdot;\hbar)$$ with $\hbar>0$ small. The potential $V$ is assumed to be smooth, positive and exponentially decaying towards infinity. We establish semiclassical global representations of Jost solutions $f_\pm(\cdot,E;\hbar)$ with error terms that are uniformly controlled for small $E$ and $\hbar$, and construct the scattering matrix as well as the semiclassical spectral measure associated to $H(\hbar)$. This is crucial in order to obtain decay bounds for the corresponding wave an…
I derive sharp semiclassical asymptotics of \int |e_h(x,y,0)|^2ω(x,y)dxdy where e_h(x,y,τ) is the Schwartz kernel of the spectral projector of Magnetic Schroedinger operator and ω(x,y) is singular as x=y. I also consider asymptotics of more general expressions.
We study the spectrum of the semiclassical Witten Laplacian $Δ_{f}$ associated to a smooth function $f$ on ${\mathbb R}^d$. We assume that $f$ is a confining Morse--Bott function. Under this assumption we show that $Δ_{f}$ admits exponentially small eigenvalues separated from the rest of the spectrum. Moreover, we establish Eyring-Kramers formula for these eigenvalues. Our approach is based on microlocal constructions of quasimodes near the critical submanifolds.
In this article we study the semiclassical resolvent estimate for the non-selfadjoint Baouendi-Grushin operator on the two-dimensional torus $\mathbb{T}^2=\mathbb{R}^2/(2π\mathbb{Z})^2$ with Hölder dampings. The operator is subelliptic degenerating along the vertical direction at $x=0$. We exhibit three different situations: (i) the damping region verifies the geometric control condition with respect to both the non-degenerate Hamiltonian flow and the vertical subelliptic flow; (ii) the undamped region contains a horizontal strip; (iii) the undamped part is a line. In all of these situations, …
Survey: In this paper I consider sharp spectral asymptotics for multidimensional magnetic Schrödinger operator with irregular coefficients with respect to two parameters -- semiclassical parameter $h$ and coupling parameter $μ$. There are few principally different cases, depending on dimension, rank of magnetic intensity matrix, relation between $h$ and $μ$ and some extra assumptions.
We consider a semiclassical linear Boltzmann model with a non local collision operator. We provide sharp spectral asymptotics for the small spectrum in the low temperature regime from which we deduce the rate of return to equilibrium as well as a metastability result. The main ingredients are resolvent estimates obtained via hypocoercive techniques and the construction of sharp Gaussian quasimodes through an adaptation of the WKB method.
Let M be a compact manifold and P = P(h) a semiclassical pseudodifferential operator on M . Suppose that u(h) is a L^2 normalised family of functions such that P(h)u(h) is O(h) in L^2, as h goes to 0. Then, for any compact submanifold Y contained in M, we obtain estimates on the L^p norm of u(h) restricted to Y, with exponents that are sharp for h goes to 0. As part of the technical development we prove some extensions of the abstract Strichartz estimates of Keel and Tao.
We prove trace inequalities for a self-adjoint operator on an abstract Hilbert space. These inequalities lead to universal bounds on spectral gaps and on moments of eigenvalues lambda_k that are analogous to those known for Schroedinger operators and the Dirichlet Laplacian, on which the operators of interest are modeled. In addition we produce inequalities that are new even in the model case. These include a family of differential inequalities for generalized Riesz means and theorems stating that arithmetic means of lambda_k^p for p <= 3 are universally bounded from above by multiples of the …
Sharp resolvent bounds for non-selfadjoint semiclassical elliptic quadratic differential operators are established, in the interior of the range of the associated quadratic symbol.
The pseudospectra (or spectral instability) of non-selfadjoint operators is a topic of current interest in applied mathematics. In fact, for non-selfadjoint operators the resolvent could be very large outside the spectrum, making the numerical computation of the complex eigenvalues very hard. This has importance, for example, in quantum mechanics, random matrix theory and fluid dynamics. The occurence of pseudospectra for non-selfadjoint semiclassical differential operators is due to the existence of quasimodes, i.e., approximate local solutions to the eigenvalue problem. For scalar operators,…
