A limit theorem for a sequence of diffusion processes on graphs is proved in a case when vary both parameters of the processes (the drift and diffusion coefficients on every edge and the asymmetry coefficients in every vertex), and configuration of graphs, where the processes are set on. The explicit formulae for the parameters of asymmetry for the vertices of the limiting graph are given in the case, when, in the pre-limiting graphs, some groups of vertices form knots contracting into a points.
In the present paper, we prove that with probability one, the Stratonovich signatures of a multidimensional diffusion process (possibly degenerate) over [0,1], which is the collection of all iterated Stratonovich's integrals of the diffusion process over [0,1], determine the diffusion sample paths.
We consider a positive recurrent one-dimensional diffusion process with continuous coefficients and we establish stable central limit theorems for a certain type of additive functionals of this diffusion. In other words we find some explicit conditions on the additive functional so that its fluctuations behave like some $α$-stable process in large time for $α\in(0,2]$.
Central limit theorems play an important role in the study of statistical inference for stochastic processes. However, when the nonparametric local polynomial threshold estimator, especially local linear case, is employed to estimate the diffusion coefficients of diffusion processes, the adaptive and predictable structure of the estimator conditionally on the $σ-$field generated by diffusion processes is destroyed, the classical central limit theorem for martingale difference sequences can not work. In this paper, we proved the central limit theorems of local polynomial threshold estimators fo…
In this paper, we study inverse local time at 0 of one-dimensional reflected diffusions on $[0, \infty)$, and establish a comparison principle for inverse local times. Applications to Green function estimates for non-local operators are given.
We revisit functional central limit theorems for additive functionals of ergodic Markov diffusion processes. Translated in the language of partial differential equations of evolution, they appear as diffusion limits in the asymptotic analysis of Fokker-Planck type equations. We focus on the square integrable framework, and we provide tractable conditions on the infinitesimal generator, including degenerate or anomalously slow diffusions. We take advantage on recent developments in the study of the trend to the equilibrium of ergodic diffusions. We discuss examples and formulate open problems.
We formulate a martingale problem that describes a diffusion process in a multidimensional Euclidean space with a membrane located on a given smooth surface and having the properties of skewing and delaying. The theorem on the existence of no more than one solution to the problem is proved.
We study rigidity phenomenons for infinite dimension diffusion operators of positive curvature using semigroup interpolations. In particular, for such diffusions, an analogous statement of Obata's theorem is established. Moreover, the same rigidity holds for the Bakry--Ledoux isoperimetric comparison Theorem - a result due to Franck Morgan. Recently, Mossel and Neeman have exploited the semigroup proof of Bakry and Ledoux to derive dimension free bounds for the Gaussian isoperimetry. We extend theirs arguments to obtain in particular new quantitative bounds on the spherical isoperimetric inequ…
Cyclic structure and dynamics are of great interest in both the fields of stochastic processes and nonequilibrium statistical physics. In this paper, we find a new symmetry of the Brownian motion named as the quasi-time-reversal invariance. It turns out that such an invariance of the Brownian motion is the key to prove the cycle symmetry for diffusion processes on the circle, which says that the distributions of the forming times of the forward and backward cycles, given that the corresponding cycle is formed earlier than the other, are exactly the same. With the aid of the cycle symmetry, we …
We study the escape rate of diffusion process with two approaches. We first give an upper rate function for the diffusion process associated with a symmetric, strongly local regular Dirichlet form. The upper rate function is in terms of the volume growth of the underlying state space. The method is due to Hsu and Qin [Ann. Probab., 38(4), 2010] where an upper rate function was given for Brownian motion on Riemannian manifold. In the second part, we prove a comparison theorem and give an upper rate function for diffusion process on Riemannian manifold in terms of the upper rate function for the…
This paper develops central limit theorems (CLT's) and large deviations results for additive functionals associated with reflecting diffusions in which the functional may include a term associated with the cumulative amount of boundary reflection that has occurred. Extending the known central limit and large deviations theory for Markov processes to include additive functionals that incorporate boundary reflection is important in many applications settings in which reflecting diffusions arise, including queueing theory and economics. In particular, the paper establishes the partial differentia…
The paper considers an Euler discretization based numerical scheme for approximating functionals of invariant distribution of an ergodic diffusion. Convergence of the numerical scheme is shown for suitably chosen discretization step, and a thorough error analysis is conducted by proving central limit theorem and moderate deviation principle for the error term. The paper is a first step in understanding efficiency of discretization based numerical schemes for estimating invariant distributions, which is comparatively much less studied than the schemes used for generating approximate trajectorie…
In this paper we establish a comparison theorem for stochastic differential delay equations with jumps. An example is constructed to demonstrate that the comparison theorem need not hold whenever the diffusion term contains a delay function although the jump-diffusion coefficient could contain a delay function. Moreover, another example is established to show that the comparison theorem is not necessary to be true provided that the jump-diffusion term is non-increasing with respect to the delay variable.
We prove a Central Limit Theorem for the finite dimensional distributions of the displacement for the 1D self-repelling diffusion which solves \begin{equation*} dX_t =dB_t -\big(G'(X_t)+ \int_0^t F'(X_t-X_s)ds\big)dt, \end{equation*} where $B$ is a real valued standard Brownian motion and $F(x)=\sum_{k=1}^n a_k \cos(kx)$ with $n<\infty$ and $a_1,\cdots ,a_n >0$. In dimension $d\geq 3$, such a result has already been established by Horváth, Tóth and Vetö in \cite{HTV} in 2012 but not for $d=1,2$. Under an integrability condition, Tarrès, Tóth and Valkó conjectured in \cite{TTV} that a Central L…
Ordinary differential equations obtained as limits of Markov processes appear in many settings. They may arise by scaling large systems, or by averaging rapidly fluctuating systems, or in systems involving multiple time-scales, by a combination of the two. Motivated by models with multiple time-scales arising in systems biology, we present a general approach to proving a central limit theorem capturing the fluctuations of the original model around the deterministic limit. The central limit theorem provides a method for deriving an appropriate diffusion (Langevin) approximation.
We give a proof of Lehoczky's drawdown formula for one-dimensional diffusion processes, using the Poisson structure of the excursions of the diffusion below its running maximum.
We address the issue of the Central Limit Theorem for (both local and global) empirical measures of diffusions interacting on a possibly diluted Erdős-Rényi graph. Special attention is given to the influence of initial condition (not necessarily i.i.d.) on the nature of the limiting fluctuations. We prove in particular that the fluctuations remain the same as in the mean-field framework when the initial condition is chosen independently from the graph. We give an example of non-universal fluctuations for carefully chosen initial data that depends on the graph. A crucial tool for the proof is t…
We find Feynman-Kac type representation theorems for generalized diffusions. To do this we need to establish existence, uniqueness and regularity results for equations with measure-valued coefficients.
We give necessary and sufficient conditions to characterize the convergence in distribution of a sequence of arbitrary random variables to a probability distribution which is the invariant measure of a diffusion process. This class of target distributions includes the most known continuous probability distributions. Precisely speaking, we characterize the convergence in total variation to target distributions which are not Gaussian or Gamma distributed, in terms of the Malliavin calculus and of the coefficients of the associated diffusion process. We also prove that, among the distributions wh…
We formulate simple criteria for positive Harris recurrence of strongly degenerate stochastic differential equations with smooth coefficients when the drift depends on time and space and is periodic in the time argument. There is no time dependence in the diffusion coefficient. Our criteria rely on control systems and the support theorem, existence of an attainable inner point of full weak Hoermander dimension and of some Lyapunov function. Positive Harris recurrence enables us to prove limit theorems for such diffusions. As an application, we consider a stochastic Hodgkin-Huxley model for a s…
We present a central limit theorem for stationary random fields that are short-range dependent and asymptotically independent. As an application, we present a central limit theorem for an infinite family of interacting Itô-type diffusion processes.
We consider $\mathbb{R}^d$-valued diffusion processes of type \begin{align*} dX_t\ =\ b(X_t)dt\, +\, dB_t. \end{align*} Assuming a geometric drift condition, we establish contractions of the transitions kernels in Kantorovich ($L^1$ Wasserstein) distances with explicit constants. Our results are in the spirit of Hairer and Mattingly's extension of Harris' Theorem. In particular, they do not rely on a small set condition. Instead we combine Lyapunov functions with reflection coupling and concave distance functions. We retrieve constants that are explicit in parameters which can be computed with…
Prolongating our previous paper on the Einstein relation, we study the motion of a particle diffusing in a random reversible environment when subject to a small external forcing. In order to describe the long time behavior of the particle, we introduce the notions of steady state and weak steady state. We establish the continuity of weak steady states for an ergodic and uniformly elliptic environment. When the environment has finite range of dependence, we prove the existence of the steady state and weak steady state and compute its derivative at a vanishing force. Thus we obtain a complete "F…
We consider sub-critical configuration models and show that the central limit theorem for any additive statistic holds when the statistics satisfies a fourth moment assumption, a variance lower bound and the degree sequence of graph satisfies a growth condition. If the degree sequence is bounded, for well known statistics like component counts, log-partition function, and maximum cut-size which are Lipschitz under addition of an edge or switchings then the assumptions reduce to linear growth condition for the variance of the statistic. Our proof is based on an application of the central limit …
The classical Chernoff's theorem is a statement about discrete-time approximations of semigroups, where the approximations are consturcted as products of time-dependent contraction operators strongly differentiable at zero. We generalize the version of Chernoff's theorem for semigroups proved in a paper by Smolyanov et al., and obtain a theorem about descrete-time approximations of backward propagators.
Let $X$ be a one dimensional positive recurrent diffusion with initial distribution $ν$ and invariant probability $μ$. Suppose that for some $p> 1$, $\exists a\in\R$ such that $\forall x\in\R, \E_x T_a^p<\infty$ and $\E_νT_a^{p/2}<\infty$, where $T_a$ is the hitting time of $a$. For such a diffusion, we derive non asymptotic deviation bounds of the form $$¶_ν (|\frac1t\int_0^tf(X_s)ds-μ(f)|\geq\ge)\leq K(p)\frac1{t^{p/2}}\frac 1{\ge^p}A(f)^p.$$ Here $f$ bounded or bounded and compactly supported and $A(f)=\|f\|_{\infty}$ when $f$ is bounded and $A(f)=μ(|f|)$ when $f$ is bounded and compactly s…
We consider the optimal stopping problem consisting in, given a strong Markov process, a reward function and a discount rate, finding the stopping time such that the expected reward at the stopping time is maximum. The approach we follow, has two main components: the Dynkin's characterization of the value function as the smallest excessive function dominating the reward; and the Riesz representation of excessive functions in terms of the Green kernel, the main reference being Salminen 85. In the context of one-dimensional diffusions we give a complete characterization of the solution under som…
We study a symmetric diffusion $X$ on $\mathbb{R}^d$ in divergence form in a stationary and ergodic environment, with measurable unbounded and degenerate coefficients. We prove a quenched local central limit theorem for $X$, under some moment conditions on the environment; the key tool is a local parabolic Harnack inequality obtained with Moser iteration technique.
In this paper we explain that the natural filtration of a continuous Hunt process is continuous, and show that martingales over such a filtration are continuous. We further establish a martingale representation theorem for a class of continuous Hunt processes under certain technical conditions. In particular we establish the martingale representation theorem for the martingale parts of (reflecting) symmetric diffusions in a bounded domain with a continuous boundary. Together with an approach put forward in Lyons et al(2009), our martingale representation theorem is then applied to the study of…
This paper studies many-server limits for multi-server queues that have a phase-type service time distribution and allow for customer abandonment. The first set of limit theorems is for critically loaded $G/Ph/n+GI$ queues, where the patience times are independent and identically distributed following a general distribution. The next limit theorem is for overloaded $G/ Ph/n+M$ queues, where the patience time distribution is restricted to be exponential. We prove that a pair of diffusion-scaled total-customer-count and server-allocation processes, properly centered, converges in distribution to…
An important problem in modeling networks is how to generate a randomly sampled graph with given degrees. A popular model is the configuration model, a network with assigned degrees and random connections. The erased configuration model is obtained when self-loops and multiple edges in the configuration model are removed. We prove an upper bound for the number of such erased edges for regularly-varying degree distributions with infinite variance, and use this result to prove central limit theorems for Pearson's correlation coefficient and the clustering coefficient in the erased configuration …
Inspired by the insightful article arXiv:1210.7587, we revisit the Nualart-Peccati-criterion arXiv:math/0503598 (now known as the Fourth Moment Theorem) from the point of view of spectral theory of general Markov diffusion generators. We are not only able to drastically simplify all of its previous proofs, but also to provide new settings of diffusive generators (Laguerre, Jacobi) where such a criterion holds. Convergence towards gamma and beta distributions under moment conditions is also discussed.
We derive limit theorems for the empirical distribution function of "devolatilized" increments of an Itô semimartingale observed at high frequencies. These "devolatilized" increments are formed by suitably rescaling and truncating the raw increments to remove the effects of stochastic volatility and "large" jumps. We derive the limit of the empirical c.d.f. of the adjusted increments for any Itô semimartingale whose dominant component at high frequencies has activity index of $1<β\le2$, where $β=2$ corresponds to diffusion. We further derive an associated CLT in the jump-diffusion case. We use…
We discuss a family of time-reversible, scale-invariant diffusions with singular coefficients. In analogy with the standard Gaussian theory, a corresponding family of generalized characteristic functions provides a useful tool for proving limit theorems resulting in non-Gaussian, scale-invariant diffusions. We apply the generalized characteristic functions in combination with a martingale construction to prove a simple invariance principle starting from a spatially inhomogeneous nearest-neighbor random walk.
Affine jump-diffusions constitute a large class of continuous-time stochastic models that are particularly popular in finance and economics due to their analytical tractability. Methods for parameter estimation for such processes require ergodicity in order establish consistency and asymptotic normality of the associated estimators. In this paper, we develop stochastic stability conditions for affine jump-diffusions, thereby providing the needed large-sample theoretical support for estimating such processes. We establish ergodicity for such models by imposing a `strong mean reversion' conditio…
We consider bootstrap percolation and diffusion in sparse random graphs with fixed degrees, constructed by configuration model. Every node has two states: it is either active or inactive. We assume that to each node is assigned a nonnegative (integer) threshold. The diffusion process is initiated by a subset of nodes with threshold zero which consists of initially activated nodes, whereas every other node is inactive. Subsequently, in each round, if an inactive node with threshold $θ$ has at least $θ$ of its neighbours activated, then it also becomes active and remains so forever. This is repe…
