We consider the empirical process G_t of a one-dimensional diffusion with finite speed measure, indexed by a collection of functions F. By the central limit theorem for diffusions, the finite-dimensional distributions of G_t converge weakly to those of a zero-mean Gaussian random process G. We prove that the weak convergence G_t\Rightarrow G takes place in \ell^{\infty}(F) if and only if the limit G exists as a tight, Borel measurable map. The proof relies on majorizing measure techniques for continuous martingales. Applications include the weak convergence of the local time density estimator and the empirical distribution function on the full state space.
We consider the process of partial sums of moving averages of finite order with a regular varying memory function, constructed from a stationary sequence, variance of the sum of which is a regularly varying function. We study the Gaussian approximation of this process of partial sums with the aid of a certain class of Gaussian processes, and obtain sufficient conditions for the $C$-convergence in the invariance principle in the Donsker form
We give several conditions for pregaussianity of norm balls of Besov spaces defined over $\mathbb{R}^d$ by exploiting results in Haroske and Triebel (2005). Furthermore, complementing sufficient conditions in Nickl and Pötscher (2005), we give necessary conditions on the parameters of the Besov space to obtain the Donsker property of such balls. For certain parameter combinations Besov balls are shown to be pregaussian but not Donsker.
We give necessary and sufficient conditions for existence and infinite divisibility of $α$-determinantal processes. For that purpose we use results on negative binomial and ordinary binomial multivariate distributions.
We provide a unifying approach to central limit type theorems for empirical optimal transport (OT). In general, the limit distributions are characterized as suprema of Gaussian processes. We explicitly characterize when the limit distribution is centered normal or degenerates to a Dirac measure. Moreover, in contrast to recent contributions on distributional limit laws for empirical OT on Euclidean spaces which require centering around its expectation, the distributional limits obtained here are centered around the population quantity, which is well-suited for statistical applications. Necessary and sufficient conditions for convergence in distribution of first-rare-event times and convergence in Skorokhod J-topology of first-rare-event-time processes for perturbed semi-Markov processes with finite phase space are obtained.
The continuity of Gaussian processes is extensively studied topic and it culminates in the Talagrand's notion of majorizing measures that gives complicated necessary and sufficient conditions. In this note we study the Hölder continuity of Gaussian processes. It turns out that necessary and sufficient conditions can be stated in a simple form that is a variant of the celebrated Kolmogorov-Čentsov condition.
Under some mild regularity on the normalizing sequence, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for the Strong Law of Large Numbers for (symmetrized) U-statistics. We also obtain nasc's for the a.s. convergence of series of an analogous form.
A general maximum principle (necessary and sufficient conditions) for an optimal control problem governed by a stochastic differential equation driven by an infinite dimensional martingale is established. The solution of this equation takes its values in a separable Hilbert space and the control domain need not be convex. The result is obtained by using the adjoint backward stochastic differential equation.
In this note we consider stochastic heat equation with general additive Gaussian noise. Our aim is to derive some necessary and sufficient conditions on the Gaussian noise in order to solve the corresponding heat equation. We investigate this problem invoking two different methods, respectively based on variance computations and on path-wise considerations in Besov spaces. We are going to see that, as anticipated, both approaches lead to the same necessary and sufficient condition on the noise. In addition, the path-wise approach brings out regularity results for the solution.
In this paper, we firstly establish the weak laws of large numbers on the canonical space $(\br^\bn,\cb(\br^\bn))$ by traditional truncation method and Chebyshev's inequality as in the classical probability theory. Then we extend them from the canonical space to the general sublinear expectation space. The necessary and sufficient conditions for Peng's law of large numbers are obtained.
We consider a branching random walk on the line. Biggins and Kyprianou [6] proved that, in the boundary case, the associated derivative martingale converges almost surly to a finite nonnegative limit, whose law serves as a fixed point of a smoothing transformation (Mandelbrot's cascade). In the present paper, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for the non-triviality of this limit and establish a Kesten-Stigum-like result.
We show that a weak concentration property for quadratic forms of isotropic random vectors ${\bf x}$ is necessary and sufficient for the validity of the Marchenko-Pastur theorem for sample covariance matrices of random vectors having the form $C{\bf x}$, where $C$ is any rectangular matrix with orthonormal rows. We also obtain some general conditions guaranteeing the weak concentration property.
This paper presents the general form and essential properties of the q-optimal measure following the approach of Delbaen and Schachermayer (1996) and proves its existence under mild conditions. Most importantly, it states a necessary and sufficient condition for a candidate measure to be the q-optimal measure in the case even of signed measures. Finally, an updated characterization of the q-optimal measure for continuous asset price processes is presented in the light of the counterexample appearing in Cerny and Kallsen (2006) concerning Hobson's (2004) approach.
The double sequence of standardized sample means constructed from an infinite sequence of square integrable independent random vectors in the plane with identically distributed coordinates is jointly asymptotically Normal if and only if the Cesaro means of the sequence of cross sample correlation coefficients converges to 0.
Consider a supercritical branching random walk on the real line. The consistent maximal displacement is the smallest of the distances between the trajectories followed by individuals at the $n$th generation and the boundary of the process. Fang and Zeitouni, and Faraud, Hu and Shi proved that under some integrability conditions, the consistent maximal displacement grows almost surely at rate $λ^* n^{1/3}$ for some explicit constant $λ^*$. We obtain here a necessary and sufficient condition for this asymptotic behaviour to hold.
Distributional equation is an important tool in the characterization theory because many characteristic properties of distributions can be transferred to such equations. Using a novel and natural approach, we retreat a remarkable distributional equation whose corresponding functional equation in terms of Laplace-Stieltjes transform is of the Poincare type. The necessary and sufficient conditions for the equation to have a unique distributional solution with finite variance are provided. This complements the previous results which involve at most the mean of the distributional solution. Besides…
Let X and Y be two independent and nonnegative random variables with corresponding distributions F and G. Denote by H the distribution of the product XY , called the product convolution of F and G. Cline and Samorodnitsky (1994) proposed sufficient conditions for H to be subexponential, given the subexponentiality of F. Relying on a related result of Tang (2008) on the long-tail of product convolution, we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for the subexponentiality of H, given that of F. We also study the reverse problem and obtain sufficient conditions for the subexponentiality of F …
Anticipated backward stochastic differential equations, studied the first time in 2007, are equations of the following type: {tabular}{rlll} $-dY_t$ &=& $f(t, Y_t, Z_t, Y_{t+δ(t)}, Z_{t+ζ(t)})dt-Z_tdB_t, $ & $ t\in[0, T];$ $Y_t$ &=& $ξ_t, $ & $t\in[T, T+K];$ $Z_t$ &=& $η_t, $ & $t\in[T, T+K].$ In this paper, we give a necessary and sufficient condition under which the comparison theorem holds for multidimensional anticipated backward stochastic differential equations with generators independent of the anticipated term of $Z$.
For a smooth vectorial stationary Gaussian random field $X : Ω\times \mathbb{R}^d \to \mathbb{R}^d$, we give necessary and sufficient conditions to have a finite second moment for the number of roots of $X(t) - u$. The results are obtained by using a method of proof inspired on the one obtained by D. Geman for stationary Gaussian processes long time ago. Afterwards the same method is applied to the number of critical points of a scalar random field and also to the level set of a vectorial process $X : Ω\times \mathbb{R}^D \to \mathbb{R}^d$ with $D > d$.
We consider a stochastic control problem where the set of strict (classical) controls is not necessarily convex, and the system is governed by a nonlinear backward stochastic differential equation. By introducing a new approach, we establish necessary as well as sufficient conditions of optimality for two models. The first concerns the relaxed controls, who are measure-valued processes. The second is a particular case of the first and relates to strict control problems.
We provide new necessary and sufficient conditions for the convergence of positive series developing Bertran-De Morgan and Cauchy type tests given in [M. Martin, Bull. Amer. Math. Soc. 47(1941), 452-457] and [L. Bourchtein et al, Int. J. Math. Anal. 6(2012), 1847-1869]. The obtained result enables us to extend the known conditions for recurrence and transience of birth-and-death processes given in [V. M. Abramov, Amer. Math. Monthly 127(2020) 444-448].
We establish necessary and sufficient conditions for consistent root reconstruction in continuous-time Markov models with countable state space on bounded-height trees. Here a root state estimator is said to be consistent if the probability that it returns to the true root state converges to 1 as the number of leaves tends to infinity. We also derive quantitative bounds on the error of reconstruction. Our results answer a question of Gascuel and Steel and have implications for ancestral sequence reconstruction in a classical evolutionary model of nucleotide insertion and deletion.
