According to a theorem of S. Schumacher and T. Brox, for a diffusion $X$ in a Brownian environment it holds that $(X_t-b_{\log t})/\log^2t\to 0 $ in probability, as $t\to\infty$, where $b_{\cdot}$ is a stochastic process having an explicit description and depending only on the environment. We compute the distribution of the number of sign changes for $b$ on an interval $[1,x]$ and study some of the consequences of the computation; in particular we get the probability of $b$ keeping the same sign on that interval. These results have been announced in 1999 in a non-rigorous paper by P. Le Doussal, C. Monthus, and D. Fisher and were treated with a Renormalization Group analysis. We prove that this analysis can be made rigorous using a path decomposition for the Brownian environment and renewal theory. Finally, we comment on the information these results give about the behavior of the diffusion.
A uniform key renewal theorem is deduced from the uniform Blackwell's renewal theorem. A uniform LDP (large deviations principle) for renewal-reward processes is obtained, and MDP (moderate deviations principle) is deduced under conditions much weaker than existence of exponential moments.
We consider quasi-stationary distributions for one-dimensional diffusions via the renewal dynamical approach. We show that convergence of the iterative renewal transform to quasi-stationary distributions is equivalent to a condition on the moment growth rate of the lifetime, which is at the same time a necessary condition for the existence of Yaglom limits.
This paper presents a new proof of the renewal theorem by bijecting a general point process to a deterministic one (where the time between events is always fixed). It also provides insight into the workings of the renewal theorem.
Renewal theorems are developed for point processes with interarrival times $W_n=ξ(X_{n+1}X_n\cdots)$, where $(X_n)_{n\in\mathbb Z}$ is a stochastic process with finite state space $Σ$ and $ξ\colonΣ_A\to\mathbb R$ is a Hölder continuous function on a subset $Σ_A\subsetΣ^{\mathbb N}$. The theorems developed here unify and generalise the key renewal theorem for discrete measures and Lalley's renewal theorem for counting measures in symbolic dynamics. Moreover, they capture aspects of Markov renewal theory. The new renewal theorems allow for direct applications to problems in fractal and hyperboli…
We obtain a strong renewal theorem with infinite mean beyond regular variation, when the underlying distribution belongs to the domain of geometric partial attraction a semistable law with index $α\in (1/2,1]$. In the process we obtain local limit theorems for both finite and infinite mean, that is for the whole range $α\in (0,2)$. We also derive the asymptotics of the renewal function for $α\in (0,1]$.
We consider a time-homogeneous Markov chain $X_n$, $n\ge0$, valued in ${\bf R}$. Suppose that this chain is transient, that is, $X_n$ generates a $σ$-finite renewal measure. We prove the key renewal theorem under condition that this chain has asymptotically homogeneous at infinity jumps and asymptotically positive drift.
Martingales constitute a basic tool in stochastic analysis; this paper considers their application to counting processes. We use this tool to revisit a renewal theorem and its extensions for various counting processes. We first consider a renewal process as a pilot example, deriving a new semimartingale representation that differs from the standard decomposition via the stochastic intensity function. We then revisit Blackwell's renewal theorem, its refinements and extensions. Based on these observations, we extend the semimartingale representation to a general counting process, and give condit…
A necessary and sufficient condition is established for an asymptotically stable renewal process to satisfy the strong renewal theorem. This result is valid for all alpha in (0, 1), thus completing a result for alpha in (1/2, 1) which was proved in the 1963 paper of Garsia and Lamperti [6]. This paper is superseded by arXiv:1612.07635.
In this note we explain two transitions known for moment generating functions of local times by means of properties of the renewal measure of a related renewal equation. The arguments simplify and strengthen results on the asymptotic behavior in the literature.
In this paper, we consider the perturbed renewal risk process. Systems of integro-differential equations for the Gerber-Shiu functions at ruin caused by a claim and oscillation are established, respectively. The explicit Laplase transforms of Gerber-Shiu functions are obtained, while the closed form expressions for the Gerber-Shiu functions are derived when the claim amount distribution is from the rational family. Finally, we present numerical examples intended to illustrate the main results.
A famous result in renewal theory is the Central Limit Theorem for renewal processes. As in applications usually only observations from a finite time interval are available, a bound on the Kolmogorov distance to the normal distribution is desirable. Here we provide an explicit non-uniform bound for the Renewal Central Limit Theorem based on Stein's method and track the explicit values of the constants. For this bound the inter-arrival time distribution is required to have only a second moment. As an intermediate result of independent interest we obtain explicit bounds in a non-central Berry-Es…
We consider real random walks with positive increments (renewal processes) in the domain of attraction of a stable law with index $α\in (0,1)$. The famous local renewal theorem of Garsia and Lamperti, also called strong renewal theorem, is known to hold in complete generality only for $α> \frac{1}{2}$. Understanding when the strong renewal theorem holds for $α\le \frac{1}{2}$ is a long-standing problem, with sufficient conditions given by Williamson, Doney and Chi. In this paper we give a complete solution, providing explicit necessary and sufficient conditions (an analogous result has been in…
We establish explicit exponential convergence estimates for the renewal theorem, in terms of a uniform component of the inter arrival distribution, of its Laplace transform which is assumed finite on a positive interval, and of the Laplace transform of some related random variable. Our proof is based on a coupling construction relying on discrete-time Markovian structures that underly the renewal processes and on Lyapunov-Doeblin type arguments.
This article is devoted to the investigation of limit theorems for mixed max-sum processes with renewal type stopping indexes. Limit theorems of weak convergence type are obtained as well as functional limit theorems.
The aims of this paper are twofold. Firstly, we derive some probabilistic representation for the constant which appears in the one-dimensional case of Kesten's renewal theorem. Secondly, we estimate the tail of some related random variable which plays an essential role in the description of the stable limit law of one-dimensional transient sub-ballistic random walks in random environment.
We review the theory of renewal reward processes, which describes renewal processes that have some cost or reward associated with each cycle. We present a new simplified proof of the renewal reward theorem that mimics the proof of the elementary renewal theorem and avoids the technicalities in the proof that is presented in most textbooks. Moreover, we mention briefly the extension of the theory to partial rewards, where it is assumed that rewards are not accrued only at renewal epochs but also during the renewal cycle. For this case, we present a counterexample which indicates that the standa…
Large deviations for the local time of a process $X_t$ are investigated, where $X_t=x_i$ for $t \in [S_{i-1},S_i[$ and $(x_j)$ are i.i.d.\ random variables on a Polish space, $S_j$ is the $j$-th arrival time of a renewal process depending on $(x_j)$. No moment conditions are assumed on the arrival times of the renewal process.
An elementary renewal theorem and a Blackwell theorem provided by Jasiulis-Gołdyn et al. (2020) in a setting of Kendall convolutions are proved under weaker hypothesis and extended to the Gamma class. Convergence rates of the limits concerned in these theorems are analyzed.
In this article we study a diophantine property of probability measures on R. We will always assume that the considered measures have an exponential moment and a drift. We link this property to the points in C close to the imaginary axis where the Fourier-Laplace transform of those measures take the value 1 and finally, we apply this to the study of the speed in Kesten's renewal theorem on R.
We study tails of the supremum of a perturbed random walk under regime which was not yet considered in the literature. Our approach is based on a new renewal theorem, which is of independent interest. We obtain first and second order asymptotics of the solution to renewal equation under weak assumptions and we apply these results to obtain first and second order asymptotics of the tail of the supremum of a perturbed random walk.
In dimension $d\geq3$, we present a general assumption under which the renewal theorem established by Spitzer for i.i.d. sequences of centered nonlattice r.v. holds true. Next we appeal to an operator-type procedure to investigate the Markov case. Such a spectral approach has been already developed by Babillot, but the weak perturbation theorem of Keller and Liverani enables us to greatly weaken thehypotheses in terms of moment conditions. Our applications concern the v$-geometrically ergodic Markov chains, the $ρ$-mixing Markov chains, and the iterative Lipschitz models, for which the renewal…
We consider renewal shot noise processes with response functions which are eventually nondecreasing and regularly varying at infinity. We prove weak convergence of renewal shot noise processes, properly normalized and centered, in the space $D[0,\infty)$ under the $J_1$ or $M_1$ topology. The limiting processes are either spectrally nonpositive stable Lévy processes, including the Brownian motion, or inverse stable subordinators (when the response function is slowly varying), or fractionally integrated stable processes or fractionally integrated inverse stable subordinators (when the index of …
We consider the so-called Dickman subordinator, whose Levy measure has density 1/x restricted to the interval (0,1). The marginal density of this process, known as the Dickman function, appears in many areas of mathematics, from number theory to combinatorics. In this paper, we study renewal processes in the domain of attraction of the Dickman subordinator, for which we prove local renewal theorems. We then present applications to marginally relevant disordered systems, such as pinning and directed polymer models, and prove sharp second moment estimates on their partition functions.
We study a one-dimensional diffusion $X$ in a drifted Brownian potential $W\_κ$, with $ 0\textless{}κ\textless{}1$, and focus on the behavior of the local times $(\mathcal{L}(t,x),x)$ of $X$ before time $t\textgreater{}0$.In particular we characterize the limit law of the supremum of the local time, as well as the position of the favorite sites. These limits can be written explicitly from a two dimensional stable L{é}vy process. Our analysis is based on the study of an extension of the renewal structure which is deeply involved in the asymptotic behavior of $X$.
If the step distribution in a renewal process has finite mean and regularly varying tail with index -α, 1<α<2, the first two terms in the asymptotic expansion of the renewal function have been known for many years. Here we show that, without making any additional assumptions, it is possible to give, in all cases except for α=3/2 , the exact asymptotic behaviour of the next term. In the case α=3/2 the result is exact to within a slowly varying correction. Similar results are shown to hold in the random walk case.
We study a double-ended queue where buyers and sellers arrive to conduct trades. When there is a pair of buyer and seller in the system, they immediately transact a trade and leave. Thus there cannot be non-zero number of buyers and sellers simultaneously in the system. We assume that sellers and buyers arrive at the system according to independent renewal processes, and they would leave the system after independent exponential patience times. We establish fluid and diffusion approximations for the queue length process under a suitable asymptotic regime. The fluid limit is the solution of an o…
This paper takes the so-called probabilistic approach to the Strong Renewal Theorem (SRT) for multivariate distributions in the domain of attraction of a stable law. A version of the SRT is obtained that allows any kind of lattice-nonlattice composition of a distribution. A general bound is derived to control the so-called "small-$n$ contribution", which arises from random walk paths that have a relatively small number of steps but make large cumulative moves. The asymptotic negligibility of the small-$n$ contribution is essential to the SRT. Applications of the SRT are given, including some t…
We investigate a connection between generalized Fibonacci numbers and renewal theory for stochastic processes. Using Blackwell's renewal theorem we find an approximation to the generalized Fibonacci numbers. With the help of error estimates in the renewal theorem we figure out an explicit representation.
The paper deals with renewal theory for a class of extremal Markov sequences connected with the Kendall convolution. We consider here some particular cases of the Wold processes associated with generalized convolutions. We prove an analogue of the Fredholm theorem for all regular generalized convolutions algebras. Using regularly varying functions we prove a Blackwell theorem for renewal processes defined by Kendall random walks.
We establish two different, but related results for random walks in the domain of attraction of a stable law of index $α$. The first result is a local large deviation upper bound, valid for $α\in (0,1) \cup (1,2)$, which improves on the classical Gnedenko and Stone local limit theorems. The second result, valid for $α\in (0,1)$, is the derivation of necessary and sufficient conditions for the random walk to satisfy the strong renewal theorem (SRT). This solves a long standing problem, which dates back to the 1962 paper of Garsia and Lamperti [Comm. Math. Helv.] for renewal processes (i.e. rand…
We continue the study of the compound renewal processes (c.r.p.), where the moment Cramer's condition holds (see [1]-[10], where the study of c.r.p. was started). In the paper arithmetic c.r.p. Z(n) are studied. In such processes random vector ξ = (τ,ζ) has the arithmetic distribution, where τ > 0 defines the distance between jumps, ζ defines the values of jumps. For this processes the fine asymptotics in the local limit theorem for probabilities P(Z(n) = x) has been obtained in Cramer's deviation region of x $\in$ Z. In [6]-[10] the similar problem has been solved for non-lattice c.r.p., when…
We study a random walk $\mathbf{S}_n$ on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ ($d\geq 1$), in the domain of attraction of an operator-stable distribution with index $\boldsymbolα=(α_1,\ldots,α_d) \in (0,2]^d$: in particular, we allow the scalings to be different along the different coordinates. We prove a strong renewal theorem, $i.e.$ a sharp asymptotic of the Green function $G(\mathbf{0},\mathbf{x})$ as $\|\mathbf{x}\|\to +\infty$, along the "favorite direction or scaling": (i) if $\sum_{i=1}^d α_i^{-1} < 2$ (reminiscent of Garsia-Lamperti's condition when $d=1$ [Comm. Math. Helv. $\mathbf{37}$, 1962]); (ii) if a…
Let $F$ be a probability measure on $\mathbb{R}$ in the domain of attraction of a stable law with exponent $α\in (0, 1)$. We establish integral criteria on $F$ that significantly expand the probabilistic approach to Strong Renewal Theorems (SRTs). The criterion for $α\in (0,1/2]$ is much weaker than currently available ones and in some cases provides sufficient and necessary conditions for the SRT. The criterion for $α\in (1/2, 1)$ establishes the SRT in full generality and in a unified way, barring the Limit Local Theorems employed. As an application, for infinitely divisible $F$, an integral…
We use point processes theory to describe the asymptotic distribution of all upper order statistics for observations collected at renewal times. As a corollary, we obtain limiting theorems for corresponding extremal processes.
We extend a functional limit theorem for symmetric $U$-statistics [Miller and Sen, 1972] to asymmetric $U$-statistics, and use this to show some renewal theory results for asymmetric $U$-statistics. Some applications are given.
We construct a renewal structure for random walks on surface groups. The renewal times are defined as times when the random walks enters a particular type of a cone and never leaves it again. As a consequence, the trajectory of the random walk can be expressed as an "aligned union" of i.i.d. trajectories between the renewal times. Once having established this renewal structure, we prove a central limit theorem for the distance to the origin under exponential moment conditions. Analyticity of the speed and of the asymptotic variance are natural consequences of our approach. Furthermore, our met…
Subordinating a random walk to a renewal process yields a continuous time random walk (CTRW) model for diffusion, including the possibility of anomalous diffusion. Transition densities of scaling limits of power law CTRWs have been shown to solve fractional Fokker-Planck equations. We consider limits of sequences of CTRWs which arise when both waiting times and jumps are taken from an infinitesimal triangular array. We identify two different limit processes $X_t$ and $Y_t$ when waiting times precede or follow jumps, respectively. In the limiting procedure, we keep track of the renewal times of…
Consider multiple sums $S_n$ on the $d$-dimensional integer grid, which are generated by i.i.d.\ random variables with a positive expectation. We prove the strong law of large numbers, the law of the iterated logarithm and the distributional limit theorem for random sets ${\mathcal M}_t$ that appear as inversion of the multiple sums, that is, as the set of all arguments $x\in{\mathbb R}_+^d$ such that the interpolated multiple sum $S_x$ exceeds $t$. The moment conditions are identical to those imposed in the almost sure limit theorems for multiple sums. The results are expressed in terms of set…
Let $F$ be a distribution function on the line in the domain of attraction of a stable law with exponent $α\in(0,1/2]$. We establish the strong renewal theorem for a random walk $S_1,S_2,\ldots$ with step distribution $F$, by extending the large deviations approach in Doney [Probab. Theory Related Fileds 107 (1997) 451-465]. This is done by introducing conditions on $F$ that in general rule out local large deviations bounds of the type $\mathbb{P}\{S_n\in(x,x+h]\}=O(n)\overline{F}(x)/x$, hence are significantly weaker than the boundedness condition in Doney (1997). We also give applications of…
Consider distributional fixed point equations of the form R =d f(C_i, R_i, 1 <= i <= N), where f(.) is a possibly random real valued function, N in {0, 1, 2, 3,...} U {infty}, {C_i}_{i=1}^N are real valued random weights and {R_i}_{i >= 1} are iid copies of R, independent of (N, C_1,..., C_N); =d represents equality in distribution. Fixed point equations of this type are of utmost importance for solving many applied probability problems, ranging from average case analysis of algorithms to statistical physics. We develop an Implicit Renewal Theorem that enables the characterization of the power…
We establish an exponential error term for the renewal theorem in the context of products of random matrices, which is surprising compared with classical abelian cases. A key tool is the Fourier decay of the Furstenberg measures on the projective spaces, which is a higher dimensional generalization of a recent work of Bourgain-Dyatlov.
We study null recurrent renewal Markov chains with renewal distribution in the domain of geometric partial attraction of a semistable law. Using the classical procedure of inversion, we derive a limit theorem similar to the Darling-Kac law along subsequences and obtain some interesting properties of the limit distribution. Also in this context, we obtain a Karamata type theorem along subsequences for positive operators. In both results, we identify the allowed class of subsequences. We provide several examples of nontrivial infinite measure preserving systems to which these results apply.
The standard functional central limit theorem for a renewal process with finite mean and variance, results in a Brownian motion limit. This note shows how to obtain a Brownian bridge process by a direct procedure that does not involve conditioning. Several examples are also considered.
We study i.i.d. sums $τ_k$ of nonnegative variables with index $0$: this means $\mathbf{P}(τ_1=n) = φ(n) n^{-1}$, with $φ(\cdot)$ slowly varying, so that $\mathbf{E}(τ_1^\varepsilon)=\infty$ for all $\varepsilon>0$. We prove a local limit and local (upward) large deviation theorem, giving the asymptotics of $\mathbf{P}(τ_k=n)$ when $n$ is at least the typical length of $τ_k$. A recent renewal theorem by Nagaev [21] is an immediate consequence: $\mathbf{P}(n\inτ) \sim \mathbf{P}(τ_1=n)/\mathbf{P}(τ_1 > n)^2$ as $n\to\infty$. If instead we only assume regular variation of $\mathbf{P}(n\inτ)$ and…
Let $(ξ_k,η_k)_{k\in\mathbb{N}}$ be independent identically distributed random vectors with arbitrarily dependent positive components. We call a (globally) perturbed random walk a random sequence $(T_k)_{k\in\mathbb{N}}$ defined by $T_k:=ξ_1+\cdots+ξ_{k-1}+η_k$ for $k\in\mathbb{N}$. Further, by an iterated perturbed random walk is meant the sequence of point processes defining the birth times of individuals in subsequent generations of a general branching process provided that the birth times of the first generation individuals are given by a perturbed random walk. For $j\in\mathbb{N}$ and $t\…
Random walks in random scenery are processes defined by $Z_n:=\sum_{k=1}^nξ_{X_1+...+X_k}$, where $(X_k,k\ge 1)$ and $(ξ_y,y\in\mathbb Z)$ are two independent sequences of i.i.d. random variables. We suppose that the distributions of $X_1$ and $ξ_0$ belong to the normal domain of attraction of strictly stable distributions with index $α\in[1,2]$ and $β\in(0,2)$ respectively. We are interested in the asymptotic behaviour as $|a|$ goes to infinity of quantities of the form $\sum_{n\ge 1}{\mathbb E}[h(Z_n-a)]$ (when $(Z_n)_n$ is transient) or $\sum_{n\ge 1}{\mathbb E}[h(Z_n)-h(Z_n-a)]$ (when $(Z_…
We give a generalization of the ergodic theorem for semi-Markov linear-type processes. This generalization is proved for the case when a common support of distributions defining this process is not arithmetic. Also we give an uniform estimate of expectations of the forward renewal time. These facts are based on the key renewal (Walter Smith's) theorem, and they are very useful in research in the queueing theory.
Let $F\{dx\}$ be a relatively stable probability distribution on the whole real line and $S_n$ the random walk started at the origin with step distribution $F$. We obtain an exact asymptotic form of the Green measure $U\{x+dy\}= \sum_{n=0}^\infty P[S_n-x \in dy]$ as $x\to \infty$ when $S_n$ is transient and $S_n\to \infty$ in probability. If $F$ is concentrated on $[0,\infty)$, it is relatively stable if and only if $\ell(x) :=\int_0^x F\{(t,\infty)\}dt$ is slowly varying at infinity; our result entails that if $F$ is non-arithmetic and relatively stable, then $\lim_{x\to\infty}\, \ell(x)U\{[x…
Statistical properties of spike trains as well as other neurophysiological data suggest a number of mathematical models of neurons. These models range from entirely descriptive ones to those deduced from the properties of the real neurons. One of them, the diffusion leaky integrate-and-fire neuronal model, which is based on the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck stochastic process that is restricted by an absorbing barrier, can describe a wide range of neuronal activity in terms of its parameters. These parameters are readily associated with known physiological mechanisms. The other model is descriptive, Gamm…
Let $(S_n)_n$ be a $R^d$-valued random walk ($d\geq2$). Using Babillot's method [2], we give general conditions on the characteristic function of $S_n$ under which $(S_n)_n$ satisfies the same renewal theorem as the classical one obtained for random walks with i.i.d. non-centered increments. This statement is applied to additive functionals of strongly ergodic Markov chains under the non-lattice condition and (almost) optimal moment conditions.
We consider shot noise processes $(X(t))_{t \geq 0}$ with deterministic response function $h$ and the shots occurring at the renewal epochs $0= S_0 < S_1 < S_2 ...$ of a zero-delayed renewal process. We prove convergence of the finite-dimensional distributions of $(X(ut))_{u \geq 0}$ as $t \to \infty$ in different regimes. If the response function $h$ is directly Riemann integrable, then the finite-dimensional distributions of $(X(ut))_{u \geq 0}$ converge weakly as $t \to \infty$. Neither scaling nor centering are needed in this case. If the response function is eventually decreasing, non-int…
Let $(ξ_k,η_k)_{k\in\mathbb{N}}$ be independent identically distributed random vectors with arbitrarily dependent positive components. We call a (globally) perturbed random walk a random sequence $T:=(T_k)_{k\in\mathbb{N}}$ defined by $T_k:=ξ_1+\ldots+ξ_{k-1}+η_k$ for $k\in\mathbb{N}$. Consider a general branching process generated by $T$ and denote by $N_j(t)$ the number of the $j$th generation individuals with birth times $\leq t$. We treat early generations, that is, fixed generations $j$ which do not depend on $t$. In this setting we prove counterparts for $\mathbb{E}N_j$ of the Blackwell …
