Certain subgroups of the groups $Aut(F_n)$ of automorphisms of a free group $F_n$ are considered. Comparing Alexander polynomials of two poly-free groups $Cb_4^+$ and $P_4$ we prove that these groups are not isomorphic, despite the fact that they have a lot of common properties. This answers the question of Cohen-Pakianathan-Vershinin-Wu from \cite{CVW}. The questions of linearity of subgroups of $Aut(F_n)$ are considered. As an application of the properties of poison groups in the sense of Formanek and Procesi, we show that the groups of the type $Aut(G*\mathbb Z)$ for certain groups $G$ and the subgroup of $IA$-automorphisms $IA(F_n)\subset Aut(F_n)$ are not linear for $n\geq 3$. This generalizes the recent result of Pettet that $IA(F_n)$ are not linear for $n\geq 5$.
We consider translation surfaces with poles on surfaces. We shall prove that any finite group appears as the automorphism group of some translation surface with poles. As a direct consequence we obtain the existence of structures achieving the maximal possible number of automorphisms allowed by their genus and we finally extend the same results to branched projective structures.
A presentation as well as a structural description of the automorphism group of a family of 3-generator finite $p$-groups is given, $p$ being an odd prime.
In this paper, we study a flag complex which is naturally associated to the Thurston theory of surface diffeomorphisms for compact connected orientable surfaces with boundary. The various pieces of the Thurston decomposition of a surface diffeomorphism, thick domains and annular or thin domains, fit into this flag complex, which we call the complex of domains. The main result of this paper is a computation of the group of automorphisms of this complex. Unlike the complex of curves, introduced by Harvey, for which, for all but a finite number of exceptional surfaces, by the works of Ivanov, Kor…
We prove that if the order of a splitting automorphism of free Burnside group~$B(m,n)$ of odd period~$n\ge1003$ is a prime power, then the automorphism is inner. Thus, we give an affirmative answer to the question on the coincidence of splitting and inner automorphisms of free Burnside groups $B(m,n)$ for automorphisms of orders~$p^k$ ($p$ is a prime number). This question was posed in the Kourovka Notebook in 1990 (see 11th ed., Question 11.36.~b).
Let $G$ be a finite $p$-group and let Aut$(G)$ denote the full automorphism group of $G$. In the recent past, there has been interest in finding necessary and sufficient conditions on $G$ such that certain subgroups of Aut$(G)$ are equal. We prove a technical lemma and, as a consequence, obtain some new results and short and alternate proofs of some known results of this type.
For a positive integer $n$, with $n \geq 4$, let $R_{n}$ be a free (nilpotent of class 2)-by-abelian and abelian-by-(nilpotent of class 2) Lie algebra of rank $n$. We show that the subgroup of Aut$(R_{n})$ generated by the tame automorphisms and a countably infinite set of explicitly given automorphisms of $R_{n}$ is dense in Aut$(R_{n})$ with respect to the formal power series topology.
We find a set of generators for the automorphism group of a graph product of finitely generated abelian groups entirely from a certain labeled graph. In addition, we find generators for the important subgroup of star-automorphisms defined in [7]. We follow closely the plan of M. Laurence's paper [11].
In this article we raise some new questions about positive definite functions on free groups, and explain how these are related to more well-known questions. The article is intended as a survey of known results that also offers some new perspectives and interesting observations; therefore the style is expository.
We discuss the following question of G. Makanin from ``Kourovka notebook'': does there exist an algorithm to determine is for an arbitrary pair of words $U$ and $V$ of a free group $F_n$ and an arbitrary automorphism $ϕ\in Aut(F_n)$ the equation $ϕ(X) U = V X$ solvable in $F_n$? We give the affirmative answer in the case when an automorphism is virtually inner, i.e. some its non-zero power is an inner automorphism of $F_n$.
Let $W$ be a quasiprojective variety over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. Assume that $W$ is birational to a product of a smooth projective variety $A$ and the projective line. We prove that if $A$ contains no rational curves then the automorphism group $G:=Aut(W)$ of $W$ is Jordan. That means that there is a positive integer $J=J(W)$ such that every finite subgroup $\mathcal{B}$ of ${G}$ contains a commutative subgroup $\mathcal{A}$ such that $\mathcal{A}$ is normal in $\mathcal{B}$ and the index $[\mathcal{B}:\mathcal{A}] \le J$ .
Let $G=\mathbf{Z}_{p} \oplus \mathbf{Z}_{p^2}$, where $p$ is a prime number. Suppose that $d$ is a divisor of the order of $G$. In this paper we find the number of automorphisms of $G$ fixing $d$ elements of $G$, and denote it by $θ(G,d)$. As a consequence, we prove a conjecture of Checco-Darling-Longfield-Wisdom. We also find the exact number of fixed-point-free automorphisms of the group $\mathbf{Z}_{p^{a}} \oplus \mathbf{Z}_{p^{b}}$, where $a$ and $b$ are positive integers with $a<b$. Finally, we compute $θ(D_{2q},d)$, where $D_{2q}$ is the dihedral group of order $2q$, $q$ is an odd prime …
Let $G = H\times A$ be a group, where $H$ is a purely non-abelian subgroup of $G$ and $A$ is a non-trivial abelian factor of $G$. Then, for $n \geq 2$, we show that there exists an isomorphism $ϕ: Aut_{Z(G)}^{γ_{n}(G)}(G) \rightarrow Aut_{Z(H)}^{γ_{n}(H)}(H)$ such that $ϕ(Aut_{c}^{n-1}(G))=Aut_{c}^{n-1}(H)$. Also, for a finite non-abelian $p$-group $G$ satisfying a certain natural hypothesis, we give some necessary and sufficient conditions for $Autcent(G) = Aut_c^{n-1}(G)$. Furthermore, for a finite non-abelian $p$-group $G$ we study the equality of $Autcent(G)$ with $Aut_{Z(G)}^{γ_{n}(G)}(G)…
We give simple examples of Kazhdan groups with infinite outer automorphism groups. This answers a question of Paulin, independently answered by Ollivier and Wise by completely different methods. As arithmetic lattices in (non-semisimple) Lie groups, our examples are in addition finitely presented. We also use results of Abels about compact presentability of p-adic groups to exhibit a finitely presented non-Hopfian Kazhdan group. This answers a question of Ollivier and Wise.
Let $1 \to N \to G \to H \to 1$ be an abelian extension. The purpose of this paper is to study the problem of extending automorphisms of $N$ and lifting automorphisms of $H$ to certain automorphisms of $G$.
We use the Bass--Jiang group for automorphism-induced HNN-extensions to build a framework for the construction of tractable groups with pathological outer automorphism groups. We apply this framework to a strong form of a question of Bumagin--Wise on the outer automorphism groups of finitely presented, residually finite groups.
We construct an example of an IA-automorphism of the free metabelian group of rank $n\geq 3$ without nontrivial fixed points. That gives a negative answer to the question raised by Shpilrain. By a result of Bachmuth \cite{Ba1}, such an automorphism does not exist if the rank is equal to 2.

Bumagin-Wise posed the question of whether every countable group can be realised as the outer automorphism group of a finitely generated, residually finite group. We give a partial answer to this problem for recursively presentable groups.
We prove that the automorphism group of a Fraïssé structure M equipped with a notion of stationary independence is universal for the class of automorphism groups of substructures of M. Furthermore, we show that this applies to certain homogeneous n-gons.
This article studies automorphism groups of graph products of arbitrary groups. We completely characterise automorphisms that preserve the set of conjugacy classes of vertex groups as those automorphisms that can be decomposed as a product of certain elementary automorphisms (inner automorphisms, partial conjugations, automorphisms associated to symmetries of the underlying graph). This allows us to completely compute the automorphism group of certain graph products, for instance in the case where the underlying graph is finite, connected, leafless and of girth at least $5$. If in addition the…
The question of existence of outer automorphisms of a simple algebraic group $G$ arises naturally both when working with the Galois cohomology of $G$ and as an example of the algebro-geometric problem of determining which connected components of the automorphism group of $G$ have rational points. The existence question remains open only for four types of groups, and we settle one of the remaining cases, type $^3D_4$. The key to the proof is a Skolem-Noether theorem for cubic etale subalgebras of Albert algebras which is of independent interest. Necessary and sufficient conditions for a simply …
Let F be a local field of positive characteristic, and let G be either a Heisenberg group over F, or a certain (nonabelian) two-dimensional unipotent group over F. If H is an arithmetic subgroup of G, we provide an explicit description of every automorphism of H. From this description, it follows that every automorphism of H virtually extends to a virtual automorphism of G.
We observe that there is an example of an automorphism group of a model of an omega-stable theory---in fact, the prime model of an uncountably-categorical theory---that is not locally (OB), answering a question of C. Rosendal.
Let $\mathfrak g_i$ be a simple complex Lie algebra, $1\leq i \leq d$, and let $G=G_1\times...\times G_d$ be the corresponding adjoint group. Consider the $G$-module $V=\oplus r_i\mathfrak g_i$ where $r_i\geq 1$ for all $i$. We say that $V$ is \emph{large} if all $r_i\geq 2$ and $r_i\geq 3$ if $G_i$ has rank 1. In [Schwarz12] we showed that when $V$ is large any algebraic automorphism $ψ$ of the quotient $Z:= V//G$ lifts to an algebraic mapping $Ψ\colon V\to V$ which sends the fiber over $z$ to the fiber over $ψ(z)$, $z\in Z$. (Most cases were already handled in [Kuttler11]). We also showed th…
We construct the first known examples of infinite subgroups of the outer automorphism group of Out(A_Gamma), for certain right-angled Artin groups A_Gamma. This is achieved by introducing a new class of graphs, called focused graphs, whose properties allow us to exhibit (infinite) projective linear groups as subgroups of Out(Out(A_Gamma)). This demonstrates a marked departure from the known behavior of Out(Out(A_Gamma)) when A_Gamma is free or free abelian, as in these cases Out(Out(A_Gamma)) has order at most 4. We also disprove a previous conjecture of the second author, producing new exampl…
We observe that automorphism groups of right-angled Artin groups contain nilpotent non-abelian subgroups, namely $H_3(\mathbb{Z})$ the three-dimensional integer Heisenberg group, provided they admit a certain type of element, called an adjacent transvection. This represents a (minor) extension of a result of Charney-Vogtmann.
In 1911, Burnside asked whether or not there exist groups that have an outer automorphism which preserves conjugacy classes. Two years later he answered his own question by constructing a family of such groups. Using the small group library in MAGMA we determine all of the groups of order n < 512 that possess such an automorphism. Our investigations led to the discovery of four new infinite families of such groups, all of which are 2-groups of coclass 4.
We study the automorphism group Aut(G) of a free product G of finite cyclic groups. We investigate the question in which cases Aut(G) has Serre's property FA. In the case of two or three free factors, we prove that Aut(G) does not have property FA. However, if each free factor of G occurs at least four times we show that Aut(G) does have property FA.
Given a finitely presented group $G$, we wish to explore the conditions under which automorphisms of quotients $G/N$ can be lifted to automorphisms of $G$. We discover that in the case where $N$ is a central subgroup of $G$, the question of lifting can be reduced to solving a certain matrix equation. We then use the techniques developed to show that $Inn(G)$ is not characteristic in $Aut(G)$, where $G$ is a metacyclic group of order $p^n$, $p\neq 2$.
We compute the topological complexity of Eilenberg-Mac Lane spaces associated to the group of automorphisms of a finitely generated free group which act by conjugation on a given basis, and to certain subgroups.
In this article we study automorphisms and endomorphisms of lacunary hyperbolic groups. We prove that every lacunary hyperbolic group is Hopfian, answering a question by Henry Wilton. In addition, we show that if a lacunary hyperbolic group has the fix point property for actions on $\mathbf R$-trees, then it is co-Hopfian and its outer automorphism group is locally finite. We also construct lacunary hyperbolic groups whose automorphism group is infinite, locally finite, and contains any locally finite group given in advance.
We study the automorphism group of an idempotent evolution algebra, show that any finite group can be the automorphism group of an evolution algebra, and describe certain evolution algebras with given automorphism groups. In particular, we classify $n$-dimensional idempotent evolution algebras whose automorphism group is isomorphic to the symmetric group $S_n$, and classify idempotent evolution algebras with maximal diagonal automorphism subgroups.
We investigate some situation in which automorphisms of a group G are uniquely determined by their restrictions to a proper subgroup H. Much of the paper is devoted to studying under which additional hypotheses this property forces G to be nilpotent if H is. As an application we prove that certain countably infinite locally nilpotent groups have uncountably many (outer) automorphisms.
We investigate the action of outer automorphisms of finite groups of Lie type on their irreducible characters. We obtain a definite result for cuspidal characters. As an application we verify the inductive McKay condition for some further infinite families of simple groups at certain primes.
Polytopes are ubiquitous in different areas of mathematics. Gleason and Hubard established a factorisation theorem, stating that every abstract polytope has a unique factorisation into prime polytopes. We compute the automorphism group of a certain family of inductively constructed polytopes using the unique factorisation.
The automorphism groups of several of Thompson's countable groups of piecewise linear homeomorphisms of the line and circle are computed and it is shown that the outer automorphism groups of these groups are relatively small. These results can be interpreted as stability results for certain structures of PL functions on the circle. Machinery is developed to relate the structures on the circle to corresponding structures on the line.
We present a new simple proof of the fact that certain group manifolds as well as certain homogeneous spaces G/H of dimension 4n admit a quaternionic triple of integrable complex structures that are covariantly constant with respect to the same torsionful Bismut connection, i.e. exhibit the HKT geometry. The key observation is that different complex structures are interrelated by automorphisms of the Lie algebra. To construct the quaternion triples, one only needs to construct the proper automorphisms, which is a more simple problem.
We show that the automorphism groups of certain countable structures obtained using the Hrushovski amalgamation method are simple groups. The structures we consider are the 'uncollapsed' structures of infinite Morley rank obtained by the ab initio construction and the (unstable) omega-categorical pseudoplanes. The simplicity of the automorphism groups of these follows from results which generalize work of Lascar and of Tent and Ziegler.
We offer a criterion for showing that the automorphism group of an ultrahomogeneous structure is topologically 2-generated and even has a cyclically dense conjugacy class. We then show how finite topological rank of the automorphism group of an $ω$-categorical structure can go down to reducts. Together, those results prove that a large number of $ω$-categorical structures that appear in the literature have an automorphism group of finite topological rank. In fact, we are not aware of any $ω$-categorical structure to which they do not apply (assuming the automorphism group has no compact quotie…
A criterion for quadratic or higher growth of group automorphisms is established which are represented by graph-of-groups automorphisms with certain well specified properties. As a consequence, it is derived (using results of a previous paper of the author) that every partial Dehn twist automorphism of $\FN$ relative to local Dehn twist automorphisms is either an honest Dehn twist automorphism, or else has quadratic growth.
We consider transformations preserving certain linear structure in Grassmannians and give some generalization of the Fundamental Theorem of Projective Geometry and the Chow Theorem [Ch]. It will be exploited to study linear $(k,n-k)$-involutions, $1<k<n-1$. The analogy of the well-known J. Dieudonné and C. E. Rickart result will be obtained.
Let $F_n$ be the free group on $n\ge 2$ elements and $\A(F_n)$ its group of automorphisms. In this paper we present a rich collection of linear representations of $\A(F_n)$ arising through the action of finite index subgroups of it on relation modules of finite quotient groups of $F_n$. We show (under certain conditions) that the images of our representations are arithmetic groups.
We classify rational surfaces for which the image of the automorphisms group in the group of linear transformations of the Picard group is the largest possible. This answers a question raised by Arthur Coble in 1928, and can be rephrased in terms of periodic orbits of a birational action of an infinite Coxeter group on ordered point sets in the projective plane modulo projective equivalence. We also outline the classification of non-rational surfaces with large automorphism groups.
We study automorphism groups of sparse graphs from the viewpoint of topological dynamics and the Kechris, Pestov, Todorčević correspondence. We investigate amenable and extremely amenable subgroups of these groups using the space of orientations of the graph and results from structural Ramsey theory. Resolving one of the open questions in the area, we show that Hrushovski's example of an $ω$-categorical sparse graph has no $ω$-categorical expansion with extremely amenable automorphism group.
