Let A be a finite set of integers. For a polynomial f(x_1,...,x_n) with integer coefficients, let f(A) = {f(a_1,...,a_n) : a_1,...,a_n \in A}. In this paper it is proved that for every pair of normalized binary linear forms f(x,y)=u_1x+v_1y and g(x,y)=u_2x+v_2y with integral coefficients, there exist arbitrarily large finite sets of integers A and B such that |f(A)| > |g(A)| and |f(B)| < |g(B)|.
Consider the sets of integers $A$ that avoid any arrangement of $g$ congruent $h$-subsets. Our findings refine and improve upon some results by Erdős and Harzheim about these sets.
Stern's diatomic sequence is a well-studied and simply defined sequence with many fascinating characteristics. The binary signed-digit representation of integers is an alternative representation of integers with much use in efficient computation, coding theory and cryptography. We link these two ideas here, showing that the number of $i$-bit binary signed-digit representations of an integer $n$ with $n<2^i$ is the $(2^i-n)^\text{th}$ element in Stern's diatomic sequence. This correspondence makes the vast range of results known for Stern's diatomic sequence available for consideration in the s…
We consider the problem of characterizing finite sets which tile the integers by translations. Coven and Meyerowitz (J. Algebra 1999) found necessary and sufficient conditions for a finite set A to tile the integers under the assumption that |A| has at most 2 distinct prime factors. The purpose of this article is to settle, for the first time, certain three-prime cases.
Let A be a set of integers dense in a finite interval. We establish upper and lower bounds for the longest regularly-spaced and convex subsets of A and of A-A.
We construct subsets of {1,...,N} of cardinality at least N exp(-C(log N)^{1/(k+1)}) which do not contain arithmetic progressions of length 2^k+1. This extends a result of Behrend (1946) concerning sets which do not contain aritmetic progressions of length 3.
We prove the following theorem: for all positive integers $b$ there exists a positive integer $k$, such that for every finite set $A$ of integers with cardinality $|A| > 1$, we have either $$ |A + ... + A| \geq |A|^b$$ or $$ |A \cdot ... \cdot A| \geq |A|^b$$ where $A + ... + A$ and $A \cdot ... \cdot A$ are the collections of $k$-fold sums and products of elements of $A$ respectively. This is progress towards a conjecture of Erdös and Szemerédi on sum and product sets.
We study sets of the form $A = \big\{ n \in \mathbb N \big| \lVert p(n) \rVert_{\mathbb R / \mathbb Z} \leq \varepsilon(n) \big\}$ for various real valued polynomials $p$ and decay rates $\varepsilon$. In particular, we ask when such sets are bases of finite order for the positive integers. We show that generically, $A$ is a basis of order $2$ when $\operatorname{deg} p \geq 3$, but not when $\operatorname{deg} p = 2$, although then $A + A$ still has asymptotic density $1$.
Let $\mathcal{A}$ be a finite set of integers, and let $h\mathcal{A}$ denote the $h$-fold sumset of $\mathcal{A}$. Let $(h\mathcal{A})^{(t)}$ be subset of $h\mathcal{A}$ consisting of all integers that have at least $t$ representations as a sum of $h$ elements of $\mathcal{A}$. The structure of the set $(h\mathcal{A})^{(t)}$ is completely determined for all $h \geq h_t$.
In this note we show that for a given irreducible binary quadratic form $f(x,y)$ with integer coefficients, whenever we have $f(x,y) = f(u,v)$ for integers $x,y,u,v$, there exists a rational automorphism of $f$ which sends $(x,y)$ to $(u,v)$.
A set of integers $S \subset \mathbb{N}$ is an $α$-strong Sidon set if the pairwise sums of its elements are far apart by a certain measure depending on $α$, more specifically if $| (x+w) - (y+z) | \geq \max \{ x^α,y^α,z^α,w^α\}$ for every $x,y,z,w \in S$ satisfying $\max \{x,w\} \neq \max \{y,z\}$. We obtain a new lower bound for the growth of $α$-strong infinite Sidon sets when $0 \leq α< 1$. We also further extend that notion in a natural way by obtaining the first non-trivial bound for $α$-strong infinite $B_h$ sets. In both cases, we study the implications of these bounds for the density …
Let $h,k \ge 2$ be integers. A set $A$ of positive integers is called asymptotic basis of order $k$ if every large enough positive integer can be written as the sum of $k$ terms from $A$. A set of positive integers $A$ is said to be a $B_{h}[g]$-set if every positive integer can be written as the sum of $h$ terms from $A$ at most $g$ different ways. In this paper we prove the existence of $B_{h}[1]$ sets which are asymptotic bases of order $2h$ by using probabilistic methods.
Given an integral indefinite binary Hermitian form f over an imaginary quadratic number field, we give a precise asymptotic equivalent to the number of nonequivalent representations, satisfying some congruence properties, of the rational integers with absolute value at most s by f, as s tends to infinity.
A subset $C$ of an abelian group $G$ is a minimal additive complement to $W \subseteq G$ if $C + W = G$ and if $C' + W \neq G$ for any proper subset $C' \subset C$. In this paper, we study which sets of integers arise as minimal additive complements. We confirm a conjecture of Kwon, showing that bounded-below sets with arbitrarily large gaps arise as minimal additive complements. Moreover, our construction shows that any such set belongs to a co-minimal pair, strengthening a result of Biswas and Saha for lacunary sequences. We bound the upper and lower Banach density of syndetic sets that aris…
Let f(x_1,x_2,...,x_m) = u_1x_1+u_2 x_2+... + u_mx_m be a linear form with positive integer coefficients, and let N_f(k) = min{|f(A)| : A \subseteq Z and |A|=k}. A minimizing k-set for f is a set A such that |A|=k and |f(A)| = N_f(k). A finite sequence (u_1, u_2,...,u_m) of positive integers is called complete if {\sum_{j\in J} u_j : J \subseteq {1,2,..,m}} = {0,1,2,..., U}, where $U = \sum_{j=1}^m u_j.$ It is proved that if f is an m-ary linear form whose coefficient sequence (u_1,...,u_m) is complete, then N_f(k) = Uk-U+1 and the minimizing k-sets are precisely the arithmetic progressions of…
Let $φ(x_1,\ldots,x_h,y) = u_1x_1 + \cdots + u_hx_h+vy$ be a linear form with nonzero integer coefficients $u_1,\ldots, u_h, v.$ Let $\mathcal{A} = (A_1,\ldots, A_h)$ be an $h$-tuple of finite sets of integers and let $B$ be an infinite set of integers. Define the representation function associated to the form $φ$ and the sets \mca\ and $B$ as follows: $$ R^{(φ)}_{\mathcal{A},B}(n) = \text{card}\left( \left\{ (a_1,\ldots, a_h,b) \in A_1 \times \cdots \times A_h \times B: φ(a_1, \ldots , a_h,b ) = n \right\} \right).$$ If this representation function is constant, then the set $B$ is periodic an…
We prove that for any countable set $A$ of real numbers, the set of binary indefinite quadratic forms $Q$ such that the closure of $Q(\mathbb{Z}^2)$ is disjoint from $A$ has full Hausdorff dimension.
We prove part of a conjecture of Borwein and Choi concerning an estimate on the square of the number of solutions to n=x^2+Ny^2 for a squarefree integer N.
We present a versatile construction allowing one to obtain pairs of integer sets with infinite symmetric difference, infinite intersection, and identical representation functions.
We revisit old conjectures of Fermat and Euler regarding representation of integers by binary quadratic form x^2+5y^2. Making use of Ramanujan's_1ψ_1 summation formula we establish a new Lambert series identity for \sum_{n,m=-\infty}^{\infty} q^{n^2+5m^2}. Conjectures of Fermat and Euler are shown to follow easily from this new formula. But we don't stop there. Employing various formulas found in Ramanujan's notebooks and using a bit of ingenuity we obtaina collection of new Lambert series for certain infinite products associated with quadratic forms such as x^2+6y^2, 2x^2+3y^2, x^2+15y^2, 3x^…
Let $F$ be a binary form with integer coefficients, non-zero discriminant and degree $d$ with $d$ at least $3$. Let $R_F(Z)$ denote the number of integers of absolute value at most $Z$ which are represented by $F$. We prove that there is a positive number $C_F$ such that $R_F(Z)$ is asymptotic to $C_F Z^{\frac{2}{d}}$.
A Sidon set is a set A of integers such that no integer has two essentially distinct representations as the sum of two elements of A. More generally, for every positive integer g, a B_2[g]-set is a set A of integers such that no integer has more than g essentially distinct representations as the sum of two elements of A. It is proved that almost all small sumsets of {1,2,...,n} are B_2[g]-sets, in the sense that if B_2[g](k,n) denotes the number of B_2[g]-sets of cardinality k contained in the interval {1,2,...,n}, then lim_{n\to\infty} B_2[g](k,n)/\binom{n}{k} = 1 if k = o(n^{g/(2g+2)}).
For a rational number $r>1$, a set $A$ of positive integers is called an $r$-multiple-free set if $A$ does not contain any solution of the equation $rx = y$. The extremal problem on estimating the maximum possible size of $r$-multiple-free sets contained in $[n]:={1,2,...,n}$ has been studied for its own interest in combinatorial number theory and application to coding theory. Let $a$, $b$ be positive integers such that $a<b$ and the greatest common divisor of $a$ and $b$ is 1. Wakeham and Wood showed that the maximum size of $(b/a)$-multiple-free sets contained in $[n]$ is $\frac{b}{b+1}n+O(\…
The study of the additive volume of sets can be reduced to the case of one-dimensional sets. The exact values of the volume of extremal sets are given as a conjecture.

In this paper we present a method for producing asymptotic estimates for the number of integers in a given S having only ``small'' prime factors. The conditions that need to be verified are simpler than those required by other methods, and we apply our result to give an easy proof of a result which says that dense subsets A and B of {1,2,...,x} always produce asymptotically the expected number of x^r - smooth sums a+b, where a in A and b in B. Recall that a number n is said to be y-smooth if all its prime divisors are at most y.
We establish some upper bounds for the number of integer solutions to the Thue inequality $|F(x , y)| \leq m$, where $F$ is a binary form of degree $n \geq 3$ and with non-zero discriminant $D$, and $m$ is an integer. Our upper bounds are independent of $m$, when $m$ is smaller than $|D|^{\frac{1}{4(n-1)}}$. We also consider the Thue equation $|F(x , y)| = m$ and give some upper bounds for the number of its integral solutions. In the case of equation, our upper bounds will be independent of integer $m$, when $ m < |D|^{\frac{1}{2(n-1)}}$.
Let A be a set of integers and let h \geq 2. For every integer n, let r_{A, h}(n) denote the number of representations of n in the form n=a_1+...+a_h, where a_1,...,a_h belong to the set A, and a_1\leq ... \leq a_h. The function r_{A,h} from the integers Z to the nonnegative integers N_0 U {\infty} is called the representation function of order h for the set A. We prove that every function f from Z to N_0 U {\infty} satisfying liminf_{|n|->\infty} f (n)\geq g is the representation function of order h for some sequence A of integers, and that A can be constructed so that it increases "almost" a…
We consider redundant binary joint digital expansions of integer vectors. The redundancy is used to minimize the Hamming weight, i.e., the number of nonzero digit vectors. This leads to efficient linear combination algorithms in abelian groups, which are for instance used in elliptic curve cryptography. If the digit set is a set of contiguous integers containing the zero, a special syntactical condition is known to minimize the weight. We analyze the optimal weight of all non-negative integer vectors with maximum entry less than N. The expectation and the variance are given with a main term an…
Given a negative $D>-(\log X)^{\log 2-δ}$, we give a new upper bound on the number of square free integers $<X$ which are represented by some but not all forms of the genus of a primitive positive definite binary quadratic form $f$ of discriminant $D$. We also give an analogous upper bound for square free integers of the form $q+a<X$ where $q$ is prime and $a\in\mathbb Z$ is fixed. Combined with the 1/2-dimensional sieve of Iwaniec, this yields a lower bound on the number of such integers $q+a<X$ represented by a binary quadratic form of discriminant $D$, where $D$ is allowed to grow with $X$ …
We consider sets of positive integers containing no sum of two elements in the set and also no product of two elements. We show that the upper density of such a set is strictly smaller than 1/2 and that this is best possible. Further, we also find the maximal order for the density of such sets that are also periodic modulo some positive integer.
We will give new upper bounds for the number of solutions to the inequalities of the shape $|F(x , y)| \leq h$, where $F(x , y)$ is a sparse binary form, with integer coefficients, and $h$ is a sufficiently small integer in terms of the absolute value of the discriminant of the binary form $F$. Our bounds depend on the number of non-vanishing coefficients of $F(x , y)$. When $F$ is really sparse, we establish a sharp upper bound for the number of solutions that is linear in terms of the number of non-vanishing coefficients. This work will provide affirmative answers to a number of conjectures …
The homogeneous form $Φ_n(X,Y)$ of degree $φ(n)$ which is associated with the cyclotomic polynomial $ϕ_n(X)$ is dubbed a {\it cyclotomic binary form}. A positive integer $m\ge 1$ is said to be {\it representable by a cyclotomic binary form} if there exist integers $n,x,y$ with $n\ge 3$ and $\max\{|x|, |y|\}\ge 2$ such that $Φ_n(x,y)=m$. We prove that the number $a_m$ of such representations of $m$ by a cyclotomic binary form is finite. More precisely, we have $\,φ(n) \le ({2}/ {\log 3})\log m\, $ and $\, \max\{|x|,|y|\} \le ({2}/{\sqrt{3}})\, m^{1/φ(n)}.\,$ We give a description of the asympto…
Let $F$ be a binary form with integer coefficients, non-zero discriminant and degree $d \geq 3$. Let $R_F(Z)$ denote the number of integers of absolute value at most $Z$ which are represented by $F$. In 2019 Stewart and Xiao proved that $R_F(Z) \sim C_FZ^{2/d}$ for some positive number $C_F$. We compute $C_{R_n}$ and $C_{J_n}$ for the binary forms $R_n(x, y)$ and $J_n(x, y)$ defined by means of the relation $ (x + yi)^n = R_n(x, y) + J_n(x, y)i$, where the variables $x$ and $y$ are real.
We consider two number-theoretic problems arising from Fuglede's spectral set conjecture: characterizing finite sets that tile integers, and finding polynomials with (0,1) coefficients whose roots have a certain multiplicative structure. We verify several special cases of the relevant conjectures; in particular, we find necessary and sufficient conditions for a set A to tile the integers if A is a direct sum of cyclic subsets.
This paper presents an integer decomposition method. The method first writes an integer as a polynomial with 2 as variable that its coefficients are zero or one. Then, suppose that an integer is decomposed into product of such two polynomials that their orders are greater than one. By comparing the coefficients of two side, we obtain a system of the multivariate quadratic equations. Therefore, the integer decomposition problem is transformed into the problem of solving a system of the multivariate quadratic equations. Furthermore, the method transforms integer decomposition problem into solvin…
Let $f(x,y)=ax^2+bxy+cy^2$ be a binary quadratic form with integer coefficients. For a prime $p$ not dividing the discriminant of $f$, we say $f$ is completely $p$-primitive if for any non-zero integer $N$, the diophantine equation $f(x,y)=N$ has always an integer solution $(x,y)=(m,n)$ with $(m,n,p)=1$ whenever it has an integer solution. In this article, we study various properties of completely $p$-primitive binary quadratic forms. In particular, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for a definite binary quadratic form $f$ to be completely $p$-primitive.
In this article, we establish an average behaviour of the normalised Fourier coefficients of the Hecke eigenforms supported at the integers represented by any primitive integral positive definite binary quadratic form of fixed discriminant $D < 0$ when the class number $h(D) = 1$. We also obtain a quantitative result for the number of sign changes of the sequence of the normalised Fourier coefficients $λ_{f}(n)$ of the Hecke eigenforms $f$ where $n$ is represented by any primitive integral positive definite binary quadratic form of fixed discriminant $D < 0$ when the class number $h(D) = 1$ in…
A natural number is a binary $k$'th power if its binary representation consists of $k$ consecutive identical blocks. We prove an analogue of Waring's theorem for sums of binary $k$'th powers. More precisely, we show that for each integer $k \geq 2$, there exists a positive integer $W(k)$ such that every sufficiently large multiple of $E_k := \gcd(2^k - 1, k)$ is the sum of at most $W(k)$ binary $k$'th powers. (The hypothesis of being a multiple of $E_k$ cannot be omitted, since we show that the $\gcd$ of the binary $k$'th powers is $E_k$.) Also, we explain how our results can be extended to ar…
We discuss the problem of finding distinct integer sets $\{x_1,x_2,...,x_n\}$ where each sum $x_i+x_j, i \ne j$ is a square, and $n \le 7$. We confirm minimal results of Lagrange and Nicolas for $n=5$ and for the related problem with triples. We provide new solution sets for $n=6$ to add to the single known set. This provides new information for problem D15 in Guy's {\it Unsolved Problems in Number Theory}
A set of integers is sum-free if it contains no solution to the equation $x+y=z$. We study sum-free subsets of the set of integers $[n]=\{1,\ldots,n\}$ for which the integer $2n+1$ cannot be represented as a sum of their elements. We prove a bound of $O(2^{n/3})$ on the number of these sets, which matches, up to a multiplicative constant, the lower bound obtained by considering all subsets of $B_n = \{ \lceil \frac{2}{3}(n+1) \rceil, \ldots, n \}$. A main ingredient in the proof is a stability theorem saying that if a subset of $[n]$ of size close to $|B_n|$ contains only a few subsets that co…
Let $h$ and $l$ be integers such that $0\le h\le 2$, $0\le l\le 4$. We obtain asymptotic formulas for the numbers of solutions of the equations $n-3m=h$, $n-5m=l$ in positive integers $m$ and $n$ of a special kind, $m\le X$.
The binary signed-digit representation of integers is used for efficient computation in various settings. The Stern polynomial is a polynomial extension of the well-studied Stern diatomic sequence, and has itself has been investigated in some depth. In this paper, we show previously unknown connections between BSD representations and the Stern polynomial. We derive a weight-distribution theorem for $i$-bit BSD representations of an integer $n$ in terms of the coefficients and degrees of the terms of the Stern polynomial of $2^i-n$. We then show new recursions on Stern polynomials, and from the…
We show that if there exists an integer subject to some congruence conditions that cannot be written as the sum of the norm of an ideal in $\mathbb{Z}[\exp(2πi/2^k)]$ and at most $k$ powers of $2$, $k\geq 3$, then there are infinitely many such integers. Also, if there exists an integer that cannot be written as the sum of an integer which is the norm of an ideal in in $\mathbb{Z}[\exp(2πi/p)]$ and at most $p-2$ powers of $p$, where $p\geq 3$ is a prime, then there are infinitely many such integers. Finally it is shown that there are infinitely many integers not the sum of the norm of an ideal…
We prove that Hilbert's Tenth Problem for a ring of integers in a number field K has a negative answer if K satisfies two arithmetical conditions (existence of a so-called division-ample set of integers and of an elliptic curve of rank one over K). We relate division-ample sets to arithmetic of abelian varieties.
For nonempty sets $A,B$ of nonnegative integers and an integer $n$, let $r_{A,B}(n)$ be the number of representations of $n$ as $a+b$ and $d_{A,B}(n)$ be the number of representations of $n$ as $a-b$, where $a\in A, b\in B$. In this paper, we determine the sets $A,B$ such that $r_{A,B}(n)=1$ for every nonnegative integer $n$. We also consider the \emph{difference} structure and prove that: there exist sets $A$ and $B$ of nonnegative integers such that $r_{A,B}(n)\ge 1$ for all large $n$, $A(x)B(x)=(1+o(1))x$ and for any given nonnegative integer $c$, we have $d_{A,B}(n)=c$ for infinitely many …
