We say that a space X admits a homology exponent if there exists an exponent for the torsion subgroup of the integral homology. Our main result states if an H-space of finite type admits a homology exponent, then either it is, up to 2-completion, a product of spaces of the form BZ/2^r, S^1, K(Z, 2), and K(Z,3), or it has infinitely many non-trivial homotopy groups and k-invariants. We then show with the same methods that simply connected $H$-spaces whose mod 2 cohomology is finitely generated as an algebra over the Steenrod algebra do not have homology exponents, except products of mod 2 finite H-spaces with copies of K(Z, 2) and K(Z,3).
A spectral sequence calculating the homology groups of some spaces of maps equivariant under compact group actions is described. For the main example, we calculate the rational homology groups of spaces of even and odd maps $S^m \to S^M$, $m<M$, or, which is the same, the stable homology groups of spaces of non-resultant homogeneous polynomial maps ${\mathbb R}^{m+1} \to {\mathbb R}^{M+1}$ of growing degrees. Also, we find the homology groups of spaces of ${\mathbb Z}_r$-equivariant maps of odd-dimensional spheres for any $r$. As a technical tool, we calculate the homology groups of configurat…
We calculate the homology of the free loop space of (n-1)-connected closed manifolds of dimension at most 3n-2 (n > 1), with the Chas-Sullivan loop product and loop bracket. Over a field of characteristic zero, we obtain an expression for the BV-operator. We also give explicit formulas for the Betti numbers, showing they grow exponentially. Our main tool is the connection between formality, coformality and Koszul algebras that was elucidated in earlier work by the first author.
We study the Bousfield-Kan spectral sequence associated to the Munson-Volić cosimplicial model for the space of long links with $l$ strings in $\mathbb{R}^N$ . We compute explicitely some Euler-Poincaré series associated to the second page of that spectral sequence and deduce exponential growth of their Betti numbers.
In this paper, we clarify the relationship among the Vietoris-type homology theories and the microsimplicial homology theories, where the latter are nonstandard homology theories defined by M. C. McCord (for topological spaces), T. Korppi (for completely regular topological spaces) and the author (for uniform spaces). We show that McCord's and our homology are isomorphic for all compact uniform spaces and that Korppi's and our homology are isomorphic for all fine uniform spaces. Our homology shares many good properties with Korppi's homology. As an example, we outline a proof of the continuity…
We study the homology of free loop spaces via techniques arising from the theory of topological coHochschild homology (coTHH). Topological coHochschild homology is a topological analogue of the classical theory of coHochschild homology for coalgebras. We produce new spectrum-level structure on coTHH of suspension spectra as well as new algebraic structure in the coBökstedt spectral sequence for computing coTHH. These new techniques allow us to compute the homology of free loop spaces in several new cases, extending known calculations.
We study a spectral sequence that computes the (mod 2) S^1-equivariant homology of the free loop space LM of a manifold M (the "string homology" of M). Using it and knowledge of the string topology operations on the homology of LM, we compute the string homology of M when M is a sphere or a projective space.
We introduce a new homology theory of uniform spaces, provisionally called $μ$-homology theory. Our homology theory is based on hyperfinite chains of microsimplices. This idea is due to McCord. We prove that $μ$-homology theory satisfies the Eilenberg-Steenrod axioms. The characterization of chain-connectedness in terms of $μ$-homology is provided. We also introduce the notion of S-homotopy, which is weaker than uniform homotopy. We prove that $μ$-homology theory satisfies the S-homotopy axiom, and that every uniform space can be S-deformation retracted to a dense subset. It follows that for e…
The homology of an unknown subspace of Euclidean space can be determined from the intrinsic Čech complex of a sample of points in the subspace, without reference to the ambient Euclidean space. More precisely, given a subspace $X$ of Euclidean space and a sample $A$ of points in $X$, we give conditions for the homology of $X$ to be isomorphic to a certain persistent homology group of the intrinsic Čech complex.
In this article we study the Poisson algebra structure on the homology of the totalization of a fibrant cosimplicial space associated with an operad with multiplication. This structure is given as the Browder operation induced by the action of little disks operad, which was found by McClure and Smith. We show that the Browder operation coincides with the Gerstenhaber bracket on the Hochschild homology, which appears as the E2-term of the homology spectral sequence constructed by Bousfield. In particular we consider a variant of the space of long knots in higher dimensional Euclidean space, and…
We show that the homology of ordered configuration spaces of finite trees with loops is torsion free. We introduce configuration spaces with sinks, which allow for taking quotients of the base space. Furthermore, we give a concrete generating set for all homology groups of configuration spaces of trees with loops and the first homology group of configuration spaces of general finite graphs. An important technique in the paper is the identification of the $E^1$-page and differentials of Mayer-Vietoris spectral sequences for configuration spaces.
We consider the rational vector space generated by all rational homology spheres up to orientation-preserving homeomorphism, and the filtration defined on this space by Lagrangian-preserving rational homology handlebody replacements. We identify the graded space associated with this filtration with a graded space of augmented Jacobi diagrams.
The (co)homology self-closeness number of a simply-connected based CW-complexes $X$ is the minimal number $k$ such that any self-map $f$ of $X$ inducing an automorphism of the (co)homology groups for dimensions$\leq k$ is a self-homotopy equivalence. These two numbers are homotopy invariants and have a close relation with the group of self-homotopy equivalences. In this paper, we compare the (co)homology self-closeness numbers of spaces in certain cofibrations, define the mod $p$ (co)homology self-closeness number of simply-connected $p$-local spaces with finitely generated homologies and stud…
We produce explicit geometric representatives of nontrivial homology classes in the space of long knots in R^d, when d is even. We generalize results of Cattaneo, Cotta-Ramusino and Longoni to define cycles which live off of the vanishing line of a homology spectral sequence due to Sinha. We use configuration space integrals to show our classes pair nontrivially with cohomology classes due to Longoni.
In this paper, we introduce a kind of homology which we call Hawaiian homology to study and classify pointed topological spaces. The Hawaiian homology group has advantages of Hawaiian groups. Moreover, the first Hawaiian homology group is isomorphic to the abelianization of the first Hawaiian group for path-connected and locally path-connected topological spaces. Since Hawaiian homology has concrete elements and abelian structure, its calculations are more routine. Thus we use Hawaiian homology groups to compare Hawaiian groups, and then we obtain some information about Hawaiian groups of some…
Using factorization homology, we realize the rational homology of the unordered configuration spaces of an arbitrary manifold $M$, possibly with boundary, as the homology of a Lie algebra constructed from the compactly supported cohomology of $M$. By locating the homology of each configuration space within the Chevalley-Eilenberg complex of this Lie algebra, we extend theorems of Bödigheimer-Cohen-Taylor and Félix-Thomas and give a new, combinatorial proof of the homological stability results of Church and Randal-Williams. Our method lends itself to explicit calculations, examples of which we …
The singular chain complex of the iterated loop space is expressed in terms of the cobar construction. After that we consider the spectral sequence of the cobar construction and calculate its first term over Z/p-coefficients and over a field of characteristic zero. Finally we apply these results to calculate the homology of the iterated loop spaces of the stunted real and complex projective spaces. In the Appendix, written by F.Sergeraert there are considered computer methods for calculations of the homology of iterated loop spaces.
Let $R\subseteq \Bbb Q$ be a subring of the rationals and let $p$ be the least prime (if none, $p=\infty $) which is not invertible in $R.$ For an $R$-local $r$-connected $CW$-complex $X$ of dimension $\leq \min(r+2p-3,rp-1), r\geq 1, $ a complete homotopy invariant is constructed in terms of the loop space homology $H_*(ΩX).$ This allows us to classify all such $R$-local spaces up to homotopy with a fixed loop space homology.
We show that the homology over a field of the space of free maps from the n-sphere to the n-fold suspension of X depends only on the cohomology algebra of X and compute it explicitly. We compute also the homology of the closely related labelled configuration space on the n-sphere with labels in X and of its completion, that depends only on the homology of X. In many but not all cases the homology of the configuration space coincides with the homology of the mapping space. In particular we obtain the homology of the unordered configuration spaces on a sphere.
The $A(\inft)$-algebra structure in homology of a DG-algebra is constructed. This structure is unique up to isomorphism of $A(\infty)$ algebras. Connection of this structure with Massey products is indicated. The notion of $A(\infty)$-module over an $A(\infty)$-algebra is introduced and such a structure is constructed in homology of a DG-modules over a DG-algebra. The theory of twisted tensor products is generalized from the case of DG-algebras to the case of $A(\infty)$-algebras. These algebraic results are used to describe homology of classifying spaces, cohomology of loop spaces, and homolo…
We provide a short proof that the dimensions of the mod $p$ homology groups of the unordered configuration space $B_k(T)$ of $k$ points in a torus are the same as its Betti numbers for $p>2$ and $k\leq p$. Hence the integral homology has no $p$-power torsion. The same argument works for the punctured genus $g$ surface with $g>0$, thereby recovering a result of Brantner-Hahn-Knudsen via Lubin-Tate theory.
If X is a cosimplical $E_{n+1}$ space then Tot(X) is an $E_{n+1}$ space and its mod 2 homology $H_*(Tot(X))$ has Dyer-Lashof and Browder operations. It's natural to ask if the spectral sequence converging to $H_*(Tot(X))$ admits compatible operations. In this paper I give a positive answer to this question.
An IP-space is a pseudomanifold whose defining local properties imply that its middle perversity global intersection homology groups satisfy Poincaré duality integrally. We show that the symmetric signature induces a map of Quinn spectra from IP bordism to the symmetric $L$-spectrum of $\Z$, which is, up to weak equivalence, an $E_\infty$ ring map. Using this map, we construct a fundamental $L$-homology class for IP-spaces, and as a consequence we prove the stratified Novikov conjecture for IP-spaces.
While the Vietoris-Rips complex is now widely used in both topological data analysis and the theory of hyperbolic groups, many of the fundamental properties of its homology have remained elusive. In this article, we define the Vietoris-Rips homology for semi-uniform spaces, which generalizes the classical theory for graphs and metric spaces, and provides a natural, general setting for the construction. We then prove a version of the Eilenberg-Steenrod axioms in this setting, giving a natural definition of homotopy for semi-uniform spaces in the process.
The aim of this short note is to develop a (co)homology theory for topological spaces together with the specialisation preorder. A known way to construct such a (co)homology is to define a partial order on the topological space starting from the preorder, and then to consider some (co)homology for the obtained poset; however, we will prove that every topological space with the above preorder consists of two disjoint parts (one called 'poset part', and the other one called 'complementary part', which is not a poset in general): this suggests an improvement of the previous method that also takes…

For a finite group G and a finite G-CW-complex X, we construct groups H_\bullet(G,X) as the homology groups of the G-invariants of the cellular chain complex C_\bullet(X). These groups are related to the homology of the quotient space X/G via a norm map, and therefore provide a mechanism for calculating H_\bullet(X/G). We compute several examples and provide a new proof of ``Smith theory": if G=Z/p and X is a mod p homology sphere on which G acts, then the subcomplex X^G is empty or a mod $p$ homology sphere. We also get a new proof of the Conner conjecture: If G=Z/p acts on a Z-acyclic space …
We study fibred spaces with fibres in a structure category $\V$ and we show that cellular approximation, Blakers--Massey theorem, Whitehead theorems, obstruction theory, Hurewicz homomorphism, Wall finiteness obstruction, and Whitehead torsion theorem hold for fibred spaces. For this we introduce the cohomology of fibred spaces.
Let P_{k, n}^l be the space consisting of monic complex polynomials f(z) of degree k and such that the number of n-fold roots of f(z) is at most l. In this paper, we determine the integral homology groups of P_{k, n}^l.
We describe the topological Hochschild homology of ring spectra that arise as Thom spectra for loop maps f: X->BF, where BF denotes the classifying space for stable spherical fibrations. To do this, we consider symmetric monoidal models of the category of spaces over BF and corresponding strong symmetric monoidal Thom spectrum functors. Our main result identifies the topological Hochschild homology as the Thom spectrum of a certain stable bundle over the free loop space L(BX). This leads to explicit calculations of the topological Hochschild homology for a large class of ring spectra, includin…
Following ideas of Graeme Segal, we construct an equivariant con- figuration space that is a model of equivariant connective K-homology spec- trum for finite groups, as a consequence we obtain an induction structure for equivariant connective K-homology. We describe explicitly the homology with complex coefficients for the fixed points of this configuration space as a Hopf algebra.
The based loop space homology of a special family of homogeneous spaces, flag manifolds of connected compact Lie groups is studied. First, the rational homology of the based loop space on a complete flag manifold is calculated together with its Pontrjagin structure. Second, it is shown that the integral homology of the based loop space on a flag manifold is torsion free. This results in a description of the integral homology. In addition, the integral Pontrjagin structure is determined.
We calculate rational homology groups of spaces of non-resultant (i.e. having no non-trivial common zeros) systems of homogemeous quadratic polynomials in R^3
This work forms a foundational study of factorization homology, or topological chiral homology, at the generality of stratified spaces with tangential structures. Examples of such factorization homology theories include intersection homology, compactly supported stratified mapping spaces, and Hochschild homology with coefficients. Our main theorem characterizes factorization homology theories by a generalization of the Eilenberg--Steenrod axioms; it can also be viewed as an analogue of the Baez--Dolan cobordism hypothesis formulated for the observables, rather than state spaces, of a topologic…
In this article, we study the magnitude homology of geodesic metric spaces of curvature $\leq κ$, especially ${\rm CAT}(κ)$ spaces. We will show that the magnitude homology $MH^{l}_{n}(X)$ of such a meric space $X$ vanishes for small $l$ and all $n > 0$. Conseqently, we can compute a total $\mathbb{Z}$-degree magnitude homology for small $l$ for the shperes $\mathbb{S}^{n}$, the Euclid spaces $\mathbb{E}^{n}$, the hyperbolic spaces $\mathbb{H}^{n}$, and real projective spaces $\mathbb{RP}^{n}$ with the standard metric. We also show that an existence of closed geodesic in a metric space guarant…
A new method is given for computing generators of the homology groups with integer coefficients for any finite $T_0$-space. An important role in this method is played by irreducible cycles which are defined here and give rise to continuous injective maps between spaces called immersions. The so-called orb complex which is much smaller than the order complex induces a surjective map of its homology to the simplicial homology of the space. An analysis of the kernel of this map allows to define an effective algorithm for computing the homology groups, whose time complexity is polynomial in the si…
The aim of this paper is to explain the relationship between the (co)homology of the free loop space and the Hochschild homology of its singular cochain algebra. We introduce all the relevant technical tools, namely simplicial and cyclic objects, and we provide the various steps of the proofs, which are scattered around in the literature. This paper can be seen as a companion to the paper "Cyclic homology and equivariant homology" by J.D.S. Jones dealing with the cyclic case.
In this paper we calculate the integral Pontrjagin homology ring of the based loop space on some generalised symmetric spaces with a toral stationary subgroup. In the Appendix we show that the method can be applied to other type generalised symmetric spaces as well.
We calculate the annihilator of the ku-toral class for the p-groups Z_{p^2} X Z_{p^k}$ with k > 2. This allows us to give a description of the ku-homology of these groups.
In this paper we compute the singular homology of the space of immersions of the circle into the $n$-sphere. Equipped with Chas-Sullivan's loop product these homology groups are graded commutative algebras, we also compute these algebras. We enrich Morse spectral sequences for fibrations of free loop spaces together with loop products, this offers some new computational tools for string topology.
The paper describes a natural splitting in the rational homology and homotopy of the spaces of long knots. This decomposition presumably arises from the cabling maps in the same way as a natural decomposition in the homology of loop spaces arises from power maps. The generating function for the Euler characteristics of the terms of this splitting is presented. Based on this generating function we show that both the homology and homotopy ranks of the spaces in question grow at least exponentially. Using natural graph-complexes we show that this splitting on the level of the bialgebra of chord d…
In this paper we introduce various associative products on the homology of the space of knots and singular knots in $S^n$. We prove that these products are related through a desingularization map. We also compute some of these products and prove the nontriviality of the desingularization morphism.
We provide a construction of free factorization algebras in algebraic geometry and link factorization homology of a scheme with coefficients in a free factorization algebra to the homology of its (unordered) configuration spaces. As an application, this construction allows for a purely algebro-geometric proof of homological stability of configuration spaces.
In this paper, we shall compute the chain complex and the corresponding homology of some Morse function $f$ over integer coefficients. The definition of the correct boundary operator requires a careful construction of moduli space of (pseudo)gradient flow lines orientations. We will then apply this construction in the computation of these homology groups on 4-manifolds.
In this article we give a survey of homology computations for moduli spaces $\mathfrak{M}_{g,1}^m$ of Riemann surfaces with genus $g\geqslant 0$, one boundary curve, and $m\geqslant 0$ punctures. While rationally and stably this question has a satisfying answer by the Madsen-Weiss theorem, the unstable homology remains notoriously complicated. We discuss calculations with integral, mod-2, and rational coefficients. Furthermore, we determine, in most cases, explicit generators using homology operations.
We propose a homology theory for locally compact spaces with ends in which the ends play a special role. The approach is motivated by results for graphs with ends, where it has been highly successful. But it was unclear how the original graph-theoretical definition could be captured in the usual language for homology theories, so as to make it applicable to more general spaces. In this paper we provide such a general topological framework: we define a homology theory which satisfies the usual axioms, but which maintains the special role for ends that has made this homology work so well for gra…
