Let P_{k, n}^l be the space consisting of monic complex polynomials f(z) of degree k and such that the number of n-fold roots of f(z) is at most l. In this paper, we determine the integral homology groups of P_{k, n}^l.
We describe an alternative approach to some results of Vassiliev on spaces of polynomials, by using the scanning method which was used by Segal in his investigation of spaces of rational functions. We explain how these two approaches are related by the Smale-Hirsch Principle or the h-Principle of Gromov. We obtain several generalizations, which may be of interest in their own right.
For any natural $d \ge k \ge 2$ we calculate the cohomology groups of the space of homogeneous polynomials $R^2 \to R$ of degree $d$, which do not vanish with multiplicity $\ge k$ on real lines. For $k=2$ this problem provides the simplest example of the situation, when the "finite degree" invariants of nonsingular objects are not a complete system of invariants.
In this paper we prove a new formula for the coefficients of the cellular homology of real flag manifolds in terms of the height of certain roots. In particular, for flag manifolds of type A, we get a very simple formula for these coefficients and an explicit expression for the first and second homology groups with integer coefficients.
We study rational homology groups of one-point compactifications of spaces of complex monic polynomials with multiple roots. These spaces are indexed by number partitions. A standard reformulation in terms of quotients of orbit arrangements reduces the problem to studying certain triangulated spaces $X_{λ,μ}$. We present a combinatorial description of the cell structure of $X_{λ,μ}$ using the language of marked forests. As applications we obtain a new proof of a theorem of Arnold and a counterexample to a conjecture of Sundaram and Welker, along with a few other smaller results.
By considering labeled configurations of ``bounded multiplicity'', one can construct a functor that fits between homology and stable homotopy. Based on previous work, we are able to give an equivalent description of this labeled construction in terms of loop space functors and symmetric products. This yields a direct generalization of the May-Milgram model for iterated loop spaces, and answers questions of Carlsson and Milgram posed in the handbook. We give a classifying space formulation of our results hence extending an older result of Segal. We finally relate our labeled construction to a t…
For positive integers $d,m,n\geq 1$ with $(m,n)\not= (1,1)$ and $\Bbb K=\Bbb R$ or $\Bbb C$, let $Q^{d,m}_{n}(\Bbb K)$ denote the space of $m$-tuples $(f_1(z),\cdots ,f_m(z))\in \Bbb K [z]^m$ of $\Bbb K$-coefficients monic polynomials of the same degree $d$ such that polynomials $\{f_k(z)\}_{k=1}^m$ have no common {\it real} root of multiplicity $\geq n$ (but may have complex common root of any multiplicity). %% These spaces can be regarded as one of generalizations of the spaces defined and studied by Arnold and Vassiliev, and they may be also considered as the real analogues of the spaces st…
In the late 80s, V.~Arnold and V.~Vassiliev initiated the topological study of the space of real univariate polynomials of a given degree which have no real roots of multiplicity exceeding a given positive integer. Expanding their studies, we consider the spaces P^{cΘ}_d of real monic univariate polynomials of degree d whose real divisors avoid given sequences of root multiplicities. These forbidden sequences are taken from an arbitrary poset Θof compositions that are closed under certain natural combinatorial operations. We reduce the computation of the homology H_*(P^{cΘ}_d) to the computati…
The homological information about a filtered simplicial complex over the poset of positive real numbers is often presented by a barcode which depicts the evolution of the associated Betti numbers. However, there is a wonderfully complex combinatorics associated with the homology classes of a filtered complex, and one can do more than just counting them over the index poset. Here, we show that this combinatorial information can be encoded by filtered matroids, or even better, by rooted forests. We also show that these rooted forests can be realized as cobordisms.
For a continuous angle-valued map defined on a compact ANR, a fixed field and any degree one proposes a refinement of the Novikov-Betti number and of the Novikov homology of the pair consisting of the ANR and the degree one integral cohomology class represented by the map. For each degree the first refinement is a configuration of points with multiplicity located in the punctured complex plane whose total cardinality is the Novikov-Betti number of the pair. The second refinement is a configuration of submodules of the Novikov homology whose direct sum is isomorphic to the Novikov homology and …
Persistence diagrams, combining geometry and topology for an effective shape description used in pattern recognition, have already proven to be an effective tool for shape representation with respect to a certainfiltering function. Comparing the persistence diagram of a query with those of a database allows automatic classification or retrieval, but unfortunately, the standard method for comparing persistence diagrams, the bottleneck distance, has a high computational cost. A possible algebraic solution to this problem is to switch to comparisons between the complex polynomials whose roots are…
In his paper titled "Torsion points on Fermat Jacobians, roots of circular units and relative singular homology", Anderson determines the homology of the degree $n$ Fermat curve as a Galois module for the action of the absolute Galois group $G_{\mathbb{Q}(ζ_n)}$. In particular, when $n$ is an odd prime $p$, he shows that the action of $G_{\mathbb{Q}(ζ_p)}$ on a more powerful relative homology group factors through the Galois group of the splitting field of the polynomial $1-(1-x^p)^p$. If $p$ satisfies Vandiver's conjecture, we prove that the Galois group of this splitting field over $\mathbb{…
Using the the theory of FS^op modules, we study the asymptotic behavior of the homology of $\overline M_{g,n}$, the Deligne--Mumford compactification of the moduli space of curves, for $n >> 0$. An FS^op module is a contravariant functor from the category of finite sets and surjections to vector spaces. Via maps that glue on marked P^1's, we give the homology of $\overline M_{g,n}$ the structure of an FS^op module and bound its degree of generation. As a consequence, we prove that the generating function $\sum_{n} \dim(H_i(\overline M_{g,n})) t^n$ is rational, and its denominator has roots in …
We study the eigenforms of the action of A. Baker's Hecke operators on the holomorphic elliptic homology of various topological spaces. We prove a multiplicity one theorem (i.e., one-dimensionality of the space of these "topological Hecke eigenforms" for any given eigencharacter) for some classes of topological spaces, and we give examples of finite CW-complexes for which multiplicity one fails. We also develop some abstract "derived eigentheory" whose motivating examples arise from the failure of classical Hecke operators to commute with multiplication by various Eisenstein series. Part of th…
