The based loop space homology of a special family of homogeneous spaces, flag manifolds of connected compact Lie groups is studied. First, the rational homology of the based loop space on a complete flag manifold is calculated together with its Pontrjagin structure. Second, it is shown that the integral homology of the based loop space on a flag manifold is torsion free. This results in a description of the integral homology. In addition, the integral Pontrjagin structure is determined.
We study the singular homology (with field coefficients) of the moduli stack of stable n-pointed complex curves of genus g (the Deligne-Mumford compactification). Each of its irreducible boundary components determines via the Pontrjagin-Thom construction a map to a certain infinite loop space whose homology is well understood. We show that these maps are surjective on homology in a range of degrees proportional to the genus. This implies the existence of many new torsion classes in the homology of the moduli stack.
In this paper we calculate the integral Pontrjagin homology ring of the based loop space on some generalised symmetric spaces with a toral stationary subgroup. In the Appendix we show that the method can be applied to other type generalised symmetric spaces as well.
We provide the rational-homotopic proof that the ranks of the homotopy groups of a simply connected four-manifold depend only on its second Betti number. We also consider the based loop spaces of the gauge groups and the spaces of connections of a simply connected four-manifold and, appealing to~\cite{TI} and using the models from the rational homotopy theory, we obtain the explicit formulas for their rational Pontrjagin homology rings.
We present a new computing package Flagser, designed to construct the directed flag complex of a finite directed graph, and compute persistent homology for flexibly defined filtrations on the graph and the resulting complex. The persistent homology computation part of Flagser is based on the program Ripser [Bau18a], but is optimized specifically for large computations. The construction of the directed flag complex is done in a way that allows easy parallelization by arbitrarily many cores. Flagser also has the option of working with undirected graphs. For homology computations Flagser has an A…
We construct cohomology classes in the space of knots by considering a bundle over this space and "integrating along the fiber" classes coming from the cohomology of configuration spaces using a Pontrjagin-Thom construction. The bundle we consider is essentially the one considered by Bott and Taubes, who integrated differential forms along the fiber to get knot invariants. By doing this "integration" homotopy-theoretically, we are able to produce integral cohomology classes. We then show how this integration is compatible with the homology operations on the space of long knots, as studied by B…
Complete digraphs are referred to in the combinatorics literature as tournaments. We consider a family of semi-simplicial complexes, that we refer to as "tournaplexes", whose simplices are tournaments. In particular, given a digraph $\mathcal{G}$, we associate with it a "flag tournaplex" which is a tournaplex containing the directed flag complex of $\mathcal{G}$, but also the geometric realisation of cliques that are not directed. We define several types of filtrations on tournaplexes, and exploiting persistent homology, we observe that flag tournaplexes provide finer means of distinguishing g…
Let $\mathbb{F}_{Θ}=G/P_{Θ}$ be a generalized flag manifold, where $G$ is a real noncompact semi-simple Lie group and $P_{Θ}$ a parabolic subgroup. A classical result says the Schubert cells, which are the closure of the Bruhat cells, endow $\mathbb{F}_Θ$ with a cellular CW structure. In this paper we exhibit explicit parametrizations of the Schubert cells by closed balls (cubes) in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ and use them to compute the boundary operator $\partial $ for the cellular homology. We recover the result obtained by Kocherlakota [1995], in the setting of Morse Homology, that the coefficients o…
In this paper we prove a new formula for the coefficients of the cellular homology of real flag manifolds in terms of the height of certain roots. In particular, for flag manifolds of type A, we get a very simple formula for these coefficients and an explicit expression for the first and second homology groups with integer coefficients.
We classify flag complexes on at most 12 vertices with torsion in the first homology group. The result is moderately computer-aided. As a consequence we confirm a folklore conjecture that the smallest poset whose order complex is homotopy equivalent to the real projective plane (and also the smallest poset with torsion in the first homology group) has exactly 13 elements.
Multi-parameter persistent homology naturally arises in applications of persistent topology to data that come with extra information depending on additional parameters, like for example time series data. We introduce the concept of a Vietoris-Rips transformation, a method that reduces the computation of the one-parameter persistent homology of pathwise subcomplexes in multi-filtered flag complexes to the computation of the Vietoris-Rips persistent homology of certain semimetric spaces. The corresponding pathwise persistence barcodes track persistence features of the ambient multi-filtered comp…
Described the algebraic structure on the space of homotopy classes of cycles with marked topological flags of disks. This space is a non-commutative monoid, with an Abelian quotient corresponding to the group of singular homologies $H_k(M)$. For the marked flag contracted to a point the multiplication becomes commutative and the subgroup of spherical cycles corresponds to the usual homotopy group $π_k(M)$.
This paper is an exposition of the new subject of String Topology. We present an introduction to this exciting new area, as well as a survey of some of the latest developments, and our views about future directions of research. We begin with reviewing the seminal paper of Chas and Sullivan, which started String Topology by introducing a BV-algebra structure on the homology of a loop space of a manifold, then discuss the homotopy theoretic approach to String Topology, using the Thom-Pontrjagin construction, the cacti operad, and fat graphs. We review quantum field theories and indicate how stri…
We construct an explicit equivariant cellular decomposition of the $(4n-1)$-sphere with respect to binary polyhedral groups, and describe the associated cellular homology chain complex. As a corollary of the binary octahedral case, we deduce an $\mathfrak{S}_3$-equivariant decomposition of the flag manifold of $SL_3(\mathbb{R})$.
Associated to any finite flag complex L there is a right-angled Coxeter group W_L and a cubical complex Σ_L on which W_L acts properly and cocompactly. Its two most salient features are that (1) the link of each vertex of Σ_L is L and (2) Σ_L is contractible. It follows that if L is a triangulation of S^{n-1}, then Σ_L is a contractible n-manifold. We describe a program for proving the Singer Conjecture (on the vanishing of the reduced L^2-homology except in the middle dimension) in the case of Σ_L where L is a triangulation of S^{n-1}. The program succeeds when n < 5. This implies the Charney…
This paper describes a paving by affines for regular nilpotent Hessenberg varieties in all Lie types, namely a kind of cell decomposition that can be used to compute homology despite its weak closure conditions. Precup recently proved a stronger result; we include ours because we use different methods. We then use this paving to prove that the homology of the Peterson variety injects into the homology of the full flag variety. The proof uses intersection theory and expands the class of the Peterson variety in the homology of the flag variety in terms of the basis of Schubert classes. We explic…
Boissonnat and Pritam introduced an algorithm to reduce a filtration of flag (or clique) complexes, which can in particular speed up the computation of its persistent homology. They used so-called edge collapse to reduce the input flag filtration and their reduction method required only the 1-skeleton of the filtration. In this paper we revisit the usage of edge collapse for efficient computation of persistence homology. We first give a simple and intuitive explanation of the principles underlying that algorithm. This in turn allows us to propose various extensions including a zigzag filtratio…
Let M be a closed, oriented, n-dimensional manifold. In this paper we describe a spectrum in the sense of homotopy theory, Z(T^*M), whose homology is naturally isomorphic to the Floer homology of the cotangent bundle, T^*M. This Floer homology is taken with respect to a Hamiltonian H: S^1 x T^*M --> R, which is quadratic near infinity. Z(T^*M) is constructed assuming a basic smooth gluing result of J-holomorphic cylinders. This spectrum will have a C.W decomposition with one cell for every periodic solution of the equation defined by the Hamiltonian vector field X_H. Its induced cellular chain…
Let $\mathbb{F}_{Θ}=G/P_{Θ}$ be a flag manifold associated to a non-compact real simple Lie group $G$ and the parabolic subgroup $% P_{Θ}$. This is a closed subgroup of $G$ determined by a subset $% Θ$ of simple restricted roots of $\mathfrak{g}=Lie(G)$. This paper computes the second de Rham cohomology group of $\mathbb{F}_Θ$. We prove that it zero in general, with some rare exceptions. When it is non-zero, we give a basis of $H^2(\mathbb{F}_Θ,\mathbb{R})$ through the Weil construction of closed 2-forms as characteristic classes of principal fiber bundles. The starting point is the computatio…
Although intersection homology lacks a ring structure, certain expressions (called uniform) in the intersection homology of an irreducible projective variety $X$ always give the same value, when computed via the decomposition theorem on any resolution $X_r\to X$. This paper uses uniform (and non-uniform) expressions to define what is believed to be the usual intersection homology (and its local-global variant) of a convex polytope (or a projective toric variety). Such expressions are generated by the facets, and so may lead to necessary numerical conditions on the flag vector. Most of the conc…
We study the space of all triples of projective lines in $\mathbb{RP}^n$ such that any line in a triple intersects the two others at distinct points. We show that for $n=2$ and $3$ these spaces are homotopically equivalent to the real complete flag variety $Flag(\mathbb{R}^n)$ for $n=3$ and $4,$ respectively, and we explicitly calculate the integral homology of the corresponding spaces. We prove that for arbitrary $n$, this space is homotopy equivalent to $Flag(1,2,3,\mathbb{R}^{n+1}),$ the variety of all partial flags of signature $(0,1,2,3,n+1)$ in an $(n+1)$-dimensional vector space over $\…

We provide a characterization of two types of directed homology for fully-connected, feedforward neural network architectures. These exact characterizations of the directed homology structure of a neural network architecture are the first of their kind. We show that the directed flag homology of deep networks reduces to computing the simplicial homology of the underlying undirected graph, which is explicitly given by Euler characteristic computations. We also show that the path homology of these networks is non-trivial in higher dimensions and depends on the number and size of the layers withi…
We show that the space of all holomorphic maps of degree one from the Riemann sphere into a Grassmann manifold is a sphere bundle over a flag manifold. Using the notions of "kernel" and "span" of a map, we completely identify the space of unparameterized maps as well. The illustrative case of maps into the quadric Grassmann manifold is discussed in details and the homology of the corresponding spaces computed.
We construct and study a closed, two-dimensional, quasi-topological (0,2) gauged sigma model with target space a smooth G-manifold, where G is any compact and connected Lie group. When the target space is a flag manifold of simple G, and the gauge group is a Cartan subgroup thereof, the perturbative model describes, purely physically, the recently formulated mathematical theory of "Twisted Chiral Differential Operators". This paves the way, via a generalized T-duality, for a natural physical interpretation of the geometric Langlands correspondence for simply-connected, simple, complex Lie grou…
We prove a formula for the structure constants of multiplication of equivariant Schubert classes in both equivariant cohomology and equivariant K-theory of Kac-Moody flag manifolds G/B. We introduce new operators whose coefficients compute these (in a manifestly polynomial, but not positive, way), resulting in a formula much like and generalizing the positive Andersen-Jantzen-Soergel/Billey and Graham/Willems formulae for the restriction of classes to fixed points. Our proof involves Bott-Samelson manifolds, and in particular, the (K-)cohomology basis dual to the (K-)homology basis consisting …
Let $(X,J) $ be an almost complex manifold with a (smooth) involution $σ:X\to X$ such that fix($σ$) is non-empty. Assume that $σ$ is a complex conjugation, i.e, the differential of $σ$ anti-commutes with $J$. The space $P(m,X):=\mathbb{S}^m\times X/\!\sim$ where $(v,x)\sim (-v,σ(x))$ was referred to as a generalized Dold manifold. The above definition admits an obvious generalization to a much wider class of spaces where $X, S$ are arbitrary topological spaces. The resulting space $P(S,X)$ will be called a generalized Dold space. When $S$ and $X$ are CW complexes satisfying certain natural req…
