We show that the space of all holomorphic maps of degree one from the Riemann sphere into a Grassmann manifold is a sphere bundle over a flag manifold. Using the notions of "kernel" and "span" of a map, we completely identify the space of unparameterized maps as well. The illustrative case of maps into the quadric Grassmann manifold is discussed in details and the homology of the corresponding spaces computed.
Let $\widetilde{I}_{2n,k}$ denote the space of $k$-dimensional, oriented isotropic subspaces of $\mathbb{R}^{2n}$, called the oriented isotropic Grassmannian. Let $f \colon \widetilde{I}_{2n,k} \rightarrow \widetilde{I}_{2m,l} $ be a map between two oriented isotropic Grassmannians of the same dimension, where $k,l \geq 2$. We show that either $(n,k) = (m,l)$ or the degree of $f$ must be zero. Let $\mathbb{R}\widetilde{G}_{m,l}$ denote the oriented real Grassmann manifold. For $k,l \geq 2$ and $\dim{\widetilde{I}_{2n,k}} = \dim{\mathbb{R}\widetilde{G}_{m,l}}$, we also show that the degree of m…
In the first part, this paper studies the characteristic rank of the canonical oriented $k$-plane bundle over the Grassmann manifold $SO(n)/(SO(k) \times SO(n-k))$ of oriented $k$-planes in Euclidean $n$-space. It presents infinitely many new exact values if $k = 3$ or $k = 4$, as well as new lower bounds for the number in question if $k > 4$. In the second part, these results enable us to improve on the general upper bounds for the $Z/2Z$-cup-length of $SO(n)/(SO(k) \times SO(n-k))$. In particular, for $SO(2^t)/(SO(3) \times SO(2^t-3))$ (with $t > 2$) we prove that the cup-length is equal to …
We define the notion of an approximate triangulation for a manifold $M$ embedded in euclidean space. The basic idea is to build a nested family of simplicial complexes whose vertices lie in $M$ and use persistent homology to find a complex in the family whose homology agrees with that of $M$. Our key examples are various Grassmann manifolds $G_k({\mathbb R}^n)$.
Let $G(k,n)$ be the complex Grassmann manifold of $k$-planes in $\mathbb C^{k+n}$. In this note, we show that for $1<k<n$ and for any selfmap $f:G(k,n)\to G(k,n)$, there exists a $k$-plane $V^k\in G(k,n)$ such that $f(V^k)\cap V^k\ne \{0\}$.
Buchstaber and Terzic introduced a notion of universal space of parameters $\mathcal{F}$ for a manifold $M^{2n}$, which has an effective action of compact torus $T^k$ , $k \leq n$ with some additional properties. with special properties. This space is needed to construction of factor $M^{2n}/T^k$. Buchstaber and Terzic constructed the universal space of parameters for $G_{5,2}$. In this work we construct universal space of parameters for complex Grassmann manifold $G_{q+1,2}$. Our construction is based on the construction of moduli space of stable curves of genus zero with $q+1$ marked points …
Let $G_{n,k}$ denote the real Grassmann manifold of $k$-dimensional vector subspaces of $\mathbb R^n$. Using the Hodgkin spectral sequence, we compute the complex $K$-ring of $G_{n,k}$, up to a small indeterminacy, for all values of $n,k$ where $2\le k\le n-2$. When $n\equiv 0\!\!\mod 4, k\equiv 1\!\!\mod 2$ our result is complete.
Let $G_{n,k}$ denote the complex Grassmann manifold of $k$-dimensional vector subspaces of $\mathbb{C}^n$. Assume $l,k\le \lfloor n/2\rfloor$. We show that, for sufficiently large $n$, any continuous map $h:G_{n,l}\to G_{n,k}$ is rationally null homotopic if $(i)~ 1\le k< l,$ $(ii)~2<l<k< 2(l-1)$, $(iii)~1<l<k$, $l$ divides $n$ but $l$ does not divide $k$.

The existence of characteristic structure, or shape, in complex data sets has been recognized as increasingly important for mathematical data analysis. This realization has motivated the development of new tools such as persistent homology for exploring topological invariants, or features, in large data sets. In this paper we apply persistent homology to the characterization of gas plumes in time dependent sequences of hyperspectral cubes, i.e. the analysis of 4-way arrays. We investigate hyperspectral movies of Long-Wavelength Infrared data monitoring an experimental release of chemical simul…
In this paper we study the $\Z/2$ action on real Grassmann manifolds $G_{n}(\R^{2n})$ and $\widetilde{G}_{n}(\R^{2n})$ given by taking (appropriately oriented) orthogonal complement. We completely evaluate the related $\Z/2$ Fadell--Husseini index utilizing a novel computation of the Stiefel--Whitney classes of the wreath product of a vector bundle. These results are used to establish the following geometric result about the orthogonal shadows of a convex body: For $n=2^a (2 b+1)$, $k=2^{a+1}-1$, $C$ a convex body in $\R^{2n}$, and $k$ real valued functions $α_1,\ldots,α_k$ continuous on conve…
