The aim of this short note is to develop a (co)homology theory for topological spaces together with the specialisation preorder. A known way to construct such a (co)homology is to define a partial order on the topological space starting from the preorder, and then to consider some (co)homology for the obtained poset; however, we will prove that every topological space with the above preorder consists of two disjoint parts (one called 'poset part', and the other one called 'complementary part', which is not a poset in general): this suggests an improvement of the previous method that also takes into account the poset part, and this is indeed what we will study here.
We study the homology of free loop spaces via techniques arising from the theory of topological coHochschild homology (coTHH). Topological coHochschild homology is a topological analogue of the classical theory of coHochschild homology for coalgebras. We produce new spectrum-level structure on coTHH of suspension spectra as well as new algebraic structure in the coBökstedt spectral sequence for computing coTHH. These new techniques allow us to compute the homology of free loop spaces in several new cases, extending known calculations.
In this paper we analyze the higher topological Hochschild homology of commutative Thom S-algebras. This includes the case of the classical cobordism spectra MO, MSO, MU, etc. We consider the homotopy orbits of the torus action on iterated topological Hochschild homology and we describe the relationship to topological Andre-Quillen homology.
Hess and Shipley defined an invariant of coalgebra spectra called topological coHochschild homology, and Bohmann-Gerhardt-Høgenhaven-Shipley-Ziegenhagen developed a coBökstedt spectral sequence to compute the homology of coTHH for coalgebras over the sphere spectrum. We construct a relative coBökstedt spectral sequence to study coTHH of coalgebra spectra over any commutative ring spectrum $R$. Further, we use algebraic structures in this spectral sequence to complete some calculations of the homotopy groups of relative topological coHochschild homology.
We compute the component group of the derived $G$-geometric fixed points of the real topological Hochschild homology of a ring with anti-involution, where $G$ denotes the Galois group Gal($\mathbb{C}$/$\mathbb{R}$) of order 2.
We generalize a spectral sequence of Brun for the computation of topological Hochschild homology. The generalized version computes the $E$-homology of $THH(A;B)$, where $E$ is a ring spectrum, $A$ is a commutative $S$-algebra and $B$ is a connective commutative $A$-algebra. The input of the spectral sequence are the topological Hochschild homology groups of $B$ with coefficients in the $E$-homology groups of $B \wedge_A B$. The mod $p$ and $v_1$ topological Hochschild homology of connective complex $K$-theory has been computed by Ausoni and later again by Rognes, Sagave and Schlichtkrull. We p…
In this short note we study the topological Hoschschild homology of Eilenberg-MacLane spectra for finite cyclic groups. In particular, we show that the Eilenberg-MacLane spectrum H(Z/p^k) is a Thom spectrum for any prime p (except, possibly, when p=k=2) and we also compute its topological Hoschshild homology. This yields a short proof of the results obtained by Brun, and by Pirashvili except for the anomalous case p=k=2.
Motivated by a result from string topology, we prove a duality in topological Hochschild homology (THH). The duality relates the THH of an E_1-algebra spectrum and the THH of its derived Koszul dual algebra under certain compactness conditions. The result relies on results about module categories which may be of interest on their own. Finally, we relate this result to topological field theories and outline some future work.
The tools and arguments developed by Kevin Costello are adapted to families of "Outer Spaces" or spaces of graphs. This allows us to prove a version of Deligne's conjecture: the Harrison homology associated to a homotopy commutative algebra is naturally a module over a particular cobordism category of 3-manifolds.
In this paper we examine certain filtrations of topological Hochschild homology and topological cyclic homology. As an example we show how the filtration with respect to a nilpotent ideal gives rise to an analog of a theorem of Goodwillie saying that rationally relative K-theory and relative cyclic homology agree. Our variation says that the p-torsion parts agree in a range of degrees. We use it to compute K_i(Z/p^m) for i < p-2.
The classical trace map is a highly non-trivial map from algebraic K-theory to topological Hochschild homology (or topological cyclic homology) introduced by Bökstedt, Hsiang and Madsen. It led to many computations of algebraic K-theory of rings. Hesselholt and Madsen recently introduced a Z/2-equivariant version of Waldhausen S-construction for categories with duality. The output is a certain spectrum with involution, called the real K-theory spectrum KR, and associated bigraded groups analogous to Atiyah's real (topological) K-groups. This thesis develops a theory of topological Hochschild h…
We determine higher topological Hochschild homology of rings of integers in number fields with coefficients in suitable residue fields. We use the iterative description of higher THH for this and Postnikov arguments that allow us to reduce the necessary computations to calculations in homological algebra, starting from the results of Bökstedt and Lindenstrauss-Madsen on (ordinary) topological Hochschild homology.
We describe the topological Hochschild homology of ring spectra that arise as Thom spectra for loop maps f: X->BF, where BF denotes the classifying space for stable spherical fibrations. To do this, we consider symmetric monoidal models of the category of spaces over BF and corresponding strong symmetric monoidal Thom spectrum functors. Our main result identifies the topological Hochschild homology as the Thom spectrum of a certain stable bundle over the free loop space L(BX). This leads to explicit calculations of the topological Hochschild homology for a large class of ring spectra, includin…
In this paper, we clarify the relationship among the Vietoris-type homology theories and the microsimplicial homology theories, where the latter are nonstandard homology theories defined by M. C. McCord (for topological spaces), T. Korppi (for completely regular topological spaces) and the author (for uniform spaces). We show that McCord's and our homology are isomorphic for all compact uniform spaces and that Korppi's and our homology are isomorphic for all fine uniform spaces. Our homology shares many good properties with Korppi's homology. As an example, we outline a proof of the continuity…
In this paper, we introduce a kind of homology which we call Hawaiian homology to study and classify pointed topological spaces. The Hawaiian homology group has advantages of Hawaiian groups. Moreover, the first Hawaiian homology group is isomorphic to the abelianization of the first Hawaiian group for path-connected and locally path-connected topological spaces. Since Hawaiian homology has concrete elements and abelian structure, its calculations are more routine. Thus we use Hawaiian homology groups to compare Hawaiian groups, and then we obtain some information about Hawaiian groups of some…
We show that the topological Hochschild homology THH(R of an E_n-ring spectrum R is an E_{n-1}-ring spectrum. The proof is based on the fact that the tensor product of the operad Ass for monoid structures and the the little n-cubes operad is an E_{n+1}-operad, a result which is of independent interest.
Topological invariance of the intersection homology of a pseudomanifold without codimension one strata, proven by Goresky and MacPherson, is one of the main features of this homology. This property is true for codimension-dependent perversities with some growth conditions, verifying $\overline p(1)=\overline p(2)=0$. King reproves this invariance by associating an intrinsic pseudomanifold $X^*$ to any pseudomanifold $X$. His proof consists of an isomorphism between the associated intersection homologies $H^{\overline{p}}_{*}(X) \cong H^{\overline{p}}_{*}( X^*)$ for any perversity $\overline{p}…
Symmetric spectra were introduced by Jeff Smith as a symmetric monoidal category of spectra. In this paper, a detection functor is defined which detects stable equivalences of symmetric spectra. This detection functor is useful because the classic stable homotopy groups do not detect stable equivalences in symmetric spectra. One of the advantages of a symmetric monoidal category of spectra is that one can define topological Hochschild homology on ring spectra simply by mimicking the Hochschild complex from algebra. Using the detection functor mentioned above, this definition of topological Hoc…
The element $P_2^1$ of the mod 2 Steenrod algebra has the property $(P_2^1)^2=0$. This property allows one to view $P_2^1$ as a differential on $H_*(X, \mathbb{F}_2)$ for any spectrum $X$. Homology with respect to this differential, $\mathcal{M}(X, P_2^1)$, is called the $P_2^1$ Margolis homology of $X$. In this paper we give a complete calculation of the $P_2^1$ Margolis homology of the 2-local spectrum of topological modular forms $tmf$ and identify its $\mathbb{F}_2$ basis via an iterated algorithm. We apply the same techniques to calculate $P_2^1$ Margolis homology for any smash power of $…
We use ku-cohomology to determine lower bounds for the topological complexity of 2-torsion lens spaces. In the process, we give an almost-complete description of the tensor product of two copies of the ku-homology of infinite mod 2^e lens space, proving a conjecture of Gonzalez about the annihilator ideal of the bottom class. Our proof involves an elaborate row reduction of presentation matrices of arbitrary size.
We introduce a new approach to determining the structure of topological cyclic homology by means of a descent spectral sequence. We carry out the computation for a p-adic local field with Fp-coefficients, including the case p=2 which was only covered by motivic methods except in the totally unramified case.
We study the C_p-equivariant Tate construction on the topological Hochschild homology THH(B) of a symmetric ring spectrum B by relating it to a topological version R_+(B) of the Singer construction, extended by a natural circle action. This enables us to prove that the fixed and homotopy fixed point spectra of THH(B) are p-adically equivalent for B = MU and BP. This generalizes the classical C_p-equivariant Segal conjecture, which corresponds to the case B = S.
It is shown that a surjective monotone map $X\to Y$ between finite $T_0$-spaces induces a surjective map on homology. As such a map turns out to be a sequence of edge contractions in the Hasse diagram of $X$, followed by a homeomorphism, this leads to an explicit relation between the Betti numbers of $X$ to those of $Y$ and the cokernels of the edge contraction maps on the order complexes.
Working in the context of symmetric spectra, we describe and study a homotopy completion tower for algebras and left modules over operads in the category of modules over a commutative ring spectrum (e.g., structured ring spectra). We prove a strong convergence theorem that for 0-connected algebras and modules over a (-1)-connected operad, the homotopy completion tower interpolates (in a strong sense) between topological Quillen homology and the identity functor. By systematically exploiting strong convergence, we prove several theorems concerning the topological Quillen homology of algebras an…
We describe the topological Hochschild homology of the periodic complex $K$-theory spectrum, $THH(KU)$, as a commutative $KU$-algebra: it is equivalent to $KU[K(\mathbb{Z},3)]$ and to $F(ΣKU_{\mathbb{Q}})$, where $F$ is the free commutative $KU$-algebra functor on a $KU$-module. Moreover, $F(ΣKU_{\mathbb{Q}})\simeq KU \vee ΣKU_{\mathbb{Q}}$, a square-zero extension. In order to prove these results, we first establish that topological Hochschild homology commutes, as an algebra, with localization at an element. Then, we prove that $THH^n(KU)$, the $n$-fold iteration of $THH(KU)$, i.e. $T^n\otim…
By proving that several new complexes of embedded disks are highly connected, we obtain several new homological stability results. Our main result is homological stability for topological chiral homology on an open manifold with coefficients in certain partial framed $E_n$-algebras. Using this, we prove a special case of a conjecture of Vakil and Wood on homological stability for complements of closures of particular strata in the symmetric powers of an open manifold and we prove that the bounded symmetric powers of closed manifolds satisfy homological stability rationally.
We develop a theory of R-module Thom spectra for a commutative symmetric ring spectrum R and we analyze their multiplicative properties. As an interesting source of examples, we show that R-algebra Thom spectra associated to the special unitary groups can be described in terms of quotient constructions on R. We apply the general theory to obtain a description of the R-based topological Hochschild homology associated to an R-algebra Thom spectrum.
Manfred Stelzer has pointed out that part of Corollary 4.5 of our paper "Topological nonrealization results via the Goodwillie tower approach to iterated loopspace homology" [Alg. Geo. Top. 8 (2008), 2109--2129] was not sufficiently proved, and, indeed, is likely incorrect as stated. This necessitates a little more argument to finish the proof of the main theorem of the original paper. The statement of this theorem, and all the examples, remain unchanged.
The topological Hochschild homology THH(R) of a commutative S-algebra (E_infty ring spectrum) R naturally has the structure of a commutative R-algebra in the strict sense, and of a Hopf algebra over R in the homotopy category. We show, under a flatness assumption, that this makes the Boekstedt spectral sequence converging to the mod p homology of THH(R) into a Hopf algebra spectral sequence. We then apply this additional structure to the study of some interesting examples, including the commutative S-algebras ku, ko, tmf, ju and j, and to calculate the homotopy groups of THH(ku) and THH(ko) af…
We construct a genuine $G$-equivariant extension of factorization homology for $G$ a finite group, assigning a genuine $G$-spectrum to a manifold with $G$-action. We show that $G$-factorization homology is compatible with Hill-Hopkins-Ravenel norms and satisfies equivariant $\otimes$-excision. Following Ayala-Francis we prove an axiomatic characterization of genuine $G$-factorization homology. Applications include a description of real topological Hochschild homology and relative topological Hochschild homology of $C_n$-rings using genuine $G$-factorization homology.
We extend Torleif Veen's calculation of higher topological Hochschild homology ${\sf THH}^{[n]}_*(\mathbb{F}_p)$ from $n\leq 2p$ to $n\leq 2p+2$ for $p$ odd, and from $n=2$ to $n\leq 3$ for $p=2$. We calculate higher Hochschild homology ${\sf HH}_*^{[n]}(k[x])$ over $k$ for any integral domain $k$, and ${\sf HH}_*^{[n]}(\mathbb{F}_p[x]/x^{p^\ell})$ for all $n>0$. We use this and étale descent to calculate ${\sf HH}_*^{[n]}(\mathbb{F}_p[G])$ for all $n>0$ for any cyclic group $G$, and therefore also for any finitely generated abelian group $G$. We show a splitting result for higher ${\sf THH}$ …
The Alexandroff-Čech normal cohomology theory [Mor$_1$], [Bar], [Ba$_1$],[Ba$_2$] is the unique continuous extension \cite{Wat} of the additive cohomology theory [Mil], [Ber-Mdz$_1$] from the category of polyhedral pairs $\mathcal{K}^2_{Pol}$ to the category of closed normally embedded, the so called, $P$-pairs of general topological spaces $\mathcal{K}^2_{Top}$. In this paper we define the Alexander-Spanier normal cohomology theory based on all normal coverings and show that it is isomorphic to the Alexandroff-Čech normal cohomology. Using this fact and methods developed in [Ber-Mdz$_3$] we c…
Graph-based representations of point-cloud data are widely used in data science and machine learning, including epsilon-graphs that contain edges between pairs of data points that are nearer than epsilon and kNN-graphs that connect each point to its k-nearest neighbors. Recently, topological data analysis has emerged as a family of mathematical and computational techniques to investigate topological features of data using simplicial complexes. These are a higher-order generalization of graphs and many techniques such as Vietoris-Rips (VR) filtrations are also parameterized by a distance epsilo…
We establish a new theory which gives a unified topological approach to data science, by being applicable both to point cloud data and to graph data, including networks beyond pairwise interactions. We generalize simplicial complexes and hypergraphs to super-hypergraphs and establish super-hypergraph homology as an extension of simplicial homology. Driven by applications, we also introduce super-persistent homology.
We give a new proof, independent of Lin's theorem, of the Segal conjecture for the cyclic group of order two. The key input is a calculation, as a Hopf algebroid, of the Real topological Hochschild homology of $\mathbb{F}_2$. This determines the $\mathrm{E}_2$-page of the descent spectral sequence for the map $\mathrm{N}\mathbb{F}_2 \to \mathbb{F}_2$, where $\mathrm{N}\mathbb{F}_2$ is the $C_2$-equivariant Hill--Hopkins--Ravenel norm of $\mathbb{F}_2$. The $\mathrm{E}_2$-page represents a new upper bound on the $RO(C_2)$-graded homotopy of $\mathrm{N}\mathbb{F}_2$, from which the Segal conject…
Let A be an A_\infty ring spectrum. We use the description from [2] of the cyclic bar and cobar construction to give a direct definition of topological Hochschild homology and cohomology of A using the Stasheff associahedra and another family of polyhedra called cyclohedra. This construction builds the maps making up the A_\infty structure into THH(A), and allows us to study how THH(A) varies over the moduli space of A_\infty structures on A. As an example, we study how topological Hochschild cohomology of Morava K-theory varies over the moduli space of A_\infty structures and show that in the…
We show that Ravenel's spectrum $X(2)$ is the versal $E_1$-$S$-algebra of characteristic $η$. This implies that every $E_1$-$S$-algebra $R$ of characteristic $η$ admits an $E_1$-ring map $X(2)\to R$, i.e. an $\mathbb{A}_\infty$ complex orientation of degree 2. This implies that $R^\ast(\mathbb{C}P^2)\cong R_\ast[x]/x^3$. Additionally, if $R$ is an $\mathbb{E}_2$-ring Thom spectrum admitting a map (of homotopy ring spectra) from $X(2)$, e.g. $X(n)$, its topological Hochschild homology has a simple description.
We consider a fixed basis of a finitely generated free chain complex as a finite topological space and we present a sufficient condition for the singular homology of this space to be isomorphic with the homology of the chain complex.
Let $M$ be a covariant coefficient system for a finite group $G$. In this paper we analyze several topological abelian groups, some of them new, whose homotopy groups are isomorphic to the Bredon-Illman $G$-equivariant homology theory with coefficients in $M$. We call these groups equivariant Dold-Thom topological groups and we show that they are unique up to homotopy. We use one of the new groups to prove that the Bredon-Illman homology satisfies the infinite-wedge axiom and to make some calculations of the 0th equivariant homology.
A homology and cohomology theory for topological quandles are introduced. The relation between these (co)homology groups and quandle (co)homology groups are studied. The 1 - topological quandle cocycles are used to compute state sum invariants corresponding to knot diagrams.
We construct localization cofiber sequences for the topological Hochschild homology (THH) and topological cyclic homology (TC) of spectral categories. Using a global construction of the THH and TC of a scheme in terms of the perfect complexes in a spectrally enriched version of the category of unbounded complexes, the sequences specialize to localization cofiber sequences associated to the inclusion of an open subscheme. These are the targets of the cyclotomic trace from the localization sequence of Thomason-Trobaugh in K-theory. We also deduce versions of Thomason's blow-up formula and the pr…
We investigate higher topological cyclic homology as an approach to studying chromatic phenomena in homotopy theory. Higher topological cyclic homology is constructed from the fixed points of a version of topological Hochschild homology based on the n-dimensional torus, and we propose it as a computationally tractable cousin of n-fold iterated algebraic K-theory. The fixed points of toral topological Hochschild homology are related to one another by restriction and Frobenius operators. We introduce two additional families of operators on fixed points, the Verschiebung, indexed on self-isogenie…
We compute topological Hochschild homology mod $p$ and $v_1$ of the connective cover of the $K(1)$-local sphere spectrum for all primes $p\ge 3$. This is accomplished using a May-type spectral sequence in topological Hochschild homology constructed from a filtration of a commutative ring spectrum.
Topological periodic cyclic homology (i.e., $\mathbb{T}$-Tate fixed points of $THH$) has the structure of a strong symmetric monoidal functor of smooth and proper dg categories over a perfect field of finite characteristic.
In this paper we continue our study of logarithmic topological Hochschild homology. We show that the inclusion of the connective Adams summand into the p-local complex connective K-theory spectrum, equipped with suitable log structures, is a formally log THH-etale map, and compute the V(1)-homotopy of their logarithmic topological Hochschild homology spectra. As an application, we recover Ausoni's computation of the V(1)-homotopy of the ordinary THH of ku.
We show the topological Hochschild homology spectrum of a twisted group algebra $\THH(A^τ[G])$ is the Thom spectrum associated to a parametrized orthogonal spectrum $E(A,G)$. We then analyze the structure of the parametrized orthogonal spectrum $E(A,G)$ and show that it is locally trivial.
We study the logarithmic topological Hochschild homology of ring spectra with logarithmic structures and establish localization sequences for this theory. Our results apply, for example, to connective covers of periodic ring spectra like real and complex topological K-theory.
