We investigate higher topological cyclic homology as an approach to studying chromatic phenomena in homotopy theory. Higher topological cyclic homology is constructed from the fixed points of a version of topological Hochschild homology based on the n-dimensional torus, and we propose it as a computationally tractable cousin of n-fold iterated algebraic K-theory.
The fixed points of toral topological Hochschild homology are related to one another by restriction and Frobenius operators. We introduce two additional families of operators on fixed points, the Verschiebung, indexed on self-isogenies of the n-torus, and the differentials, indexed on n-vectors. We give a detailed analysis of the relations among the restriction, Frobenius, Verschiebung, and differentials, producing a higher analog of the structure Hesselholt and Madsen described for 1-dimensional topological cyclic homology.
We calculate two important pieces of higher topological cyclic homology, namely topological restriction homology and topological Frobenius homology, for the sphere spectrum. The latter computation allows us to establish the Segal conjecture for the torus, which is to say to completely compute the cohomotopy type of the classifying space of the torus.
In the 1980's, Ravenel introduced sequences of spectra $X(n)$ and $T(n)$ which played an important role in the proof of the Nilpotence Theorem of Devinatz--Hopkins--Smith. In the present paper, we solve the homotopy limit problem for topological Hochschild homology of $X(n)$, which is a generalized version of the Segal Conjecture for the cyclic groups of prime order. This result is the first step towards computing the algebraic K-theory of $X(n)$ using trace methods, which approximates the algebraic K-theory of the sphere spectrum in a precise sense. We solve the homotopy limit problem for top…
We study the C_p-equivariant Tate construction on the topological Hochschild homology THH(B) of a symmetric ring spectrum B by relating it to a topological version R_+(B) of the Singer construction, extended by a natural circle action. This enables us to prove that the fixed and homotopy fixed point spectra of THH(B) are p-adically equivalent for B = MU and BP. This generalizes the classical C_p-equivariant Segal conjecture, which corresponds to the case B = S.
We give a new proof, independent of Lin's theorem, of the Segal conjecture for the cyclic group of order two. The key input is a calculation, as a Hopf algebroid, of the Real topological Hochschild homology of $\mathbb{F}_2$. This determines the $\mathrm{E}_2$-page of the descent spectral sequence for the map $\mathrm{N}\mathbb{F}_2 \to \mathbb{F}_2$, where $\mathrm{N}\mathbb{F}_2$ is the $C_2$-equivariant Hill--Hopkins--Ravenel norm of $\mathbb{F}_2$. The $\mathrm{E}_2$-page represents a new upper bound on the $RO(C_2)$-graded homotopy of $\mathrm{N}\mathbb{F}_2$, from which the Segal conject…
We compute the homology of the space of equivariant loops on the classifying space of a simplicial monoid $M$ with anti-involution, provided $π_0 (M)$ is central in the homology ring of $M$. The proof is similar to McDuff and Segal's proof of the group completion theorem. Then we compute the homology of the $C_2$-fixed points of a Segal-type model of the algebraic $K$-theory of an additive category with duality. As an application we show that this fixed point space is sometimes group complete, but not in general.
Following ideas of Graeme Segal, we construct an equivariant con- figuration space that is a model of equivariant connective K-homology spec- trum for finite groups, as a consequence we obtain an induction structure for equivariant connective K-homology. We describe explicitly the homology with complex coefficients for the fixed points of this configuration space as a Hopf algebra.
For a spectrum $X$ represented by a special $Γ$-space $Y$ via the Segal machine, we give an elementary formula computing the homology groups of $X$ in terms of $Y$. Both the result and the method of proof are essentially due to T. Pirashvili, but the end result does not appear explicitly in his papers.
Let M be an open, connected manifold. A classical theorem of McDuff and Segal states that the sequence of configuration spaces of n unordered, distinct points in M is homologically stable with coefficients in Z: in each degree, the integral homology is eventually independent of n. The purpose of this note is to prove that this phenomenon also holds for homology with twisted coefficients. We first define an appropriate notion of finite-degree twisted coefficient system for configuration spaces and then use a spectral sequence argument to deduce the result from the untwisted homological stabilit…
We show that the basic categorical concept of an S-algebra as derived from the theory of Segal's Gamma-sets provides a unifying description of several constructions attempting to model an algebraic geometry over the absolute point. It merges, in particular, the approaches using monoids, semirings and hyperrings as well as the development by means of monads and generalized rings in Arakelov geometry. The assembly map determines a functorial way to associate an S-algebra to a monad on pointed sets. The notion of an S-algebra is very familiar in algebraic topology where it also provides a suitabl…
Topological cyclic homology is a refinement of Connes--Tsygan's cyclic homology which was introduced by Bökstedt--Hsiang--Madsen in 1993 as an approximation to algebraic $K$-theory. There is a trace map from algebraic $K$-theory to topological cyclic homology, and a theorem of Dundas--Goodwillie--McCarthy asserts that this induces an equivalence of relative theories for nilpotent immersions, which gives a way for computing $K$-theory in various situations. The construction of topological cyclic homology is based on genuine equivariant homotopy theory, the use of explicit point-set models, and …
In this paper, we study the well-know $g$-conjecture for rational homology spheres in a topological way. To do this, we construct a class of topological spaces with torus actions, which can be viewed as topological generalizations of toric varieties. Along this way we prove that after doing stellar subdivision operations at some middle dimensional faces of an arbitrary rational homology sphere, the $g$-conjecture is valid. Furthermore, we give topological proofs of several fundamental algebraic results about Buchsbaum complexes and simplicial manifolds. In this process, we also get a few inter…
We compute the integral homology (including torsion), the topological K-theory, and the Hodge structure on cohomology of Calabi-Yau threefold hypersurfaces and complete intersections in Gorenstein toric Fano varieties. The methods are purely topological.
Let T be a torus, X a smooth quasi-compact separated scheme equipped with a T-action, and [X/T] the associated quotient stack. Given any localizing A1-homotopy invariant of dg categories E, we prove that the derived completion of E([X/T]) at the augmentation ideal I of the representation ring R(T) of T agrees with the Borel construction associated to the T-action on X. Moreover, for certain localizing A1-homotopy invariants, we extend this result to the case of a linearly reductive group scheme G. As a first application, we obtain an alternative proof of Krishna's completion theorem in algebra…
We prove an equivariant localization theorem over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero for smooth quotient stacks by reductive groups $X/G$ in the setting of derived loop spaces as well as Hochschild homology and its cyclic variants. We show that the derived loop spaces of the stack $X/G$ and its classical $z$-fixed point stack $π_0(X^z)/G^z$ become equivalent after completion along a semisimple parameter $[z] \in G//G$, implying the analogous statement for Hochschild and cyclic homology of the dg category of perfect complexes $\text{Perf}(X/G)$. We then prove an analogue of th…
We prove that the rank of the cohomology of a closed symplectic manifold with coefficients in a field of characteristic $p$ is smaller than the number of periodic orbits of any non-degenerate Hamiltonian flow. Following Floer, the proof relies on constructing a homology group associated to each such flow, and comparing it with the homology of the ambient symplectic manifold. The proof does not proceed by constructing a version of Floer's complex with characteristic $p$ coefficients, but uses instead the canonical (stable) complex orientations of moduli spaces of Floer trajectories to construct…
Let T be a torus. We show that Koszul duality can be used to compute the equivariant cohomology of topological T-spaces as well as the cohomology of pull backs of the universal T-bundle. The new features are that no further assumptions about the spaces are made and that the coefficient ring may be arbitrary. This gives in particular a Cartan-type model for the equivariant cohomology of a T-space with arbitrary coefficients. Our method works for intersection homology as well.
We determine the integral homology of the orbit space of a maximal compact torus action on the Grassmannian Gr(2,5). Our approach uses the well-known Geometric Invariant Theory of the maximal algebraic torus action on this Grassmannian.
We introduce a homology theory for k-graphs and explore its fundamental properties. We establish connections with algebraic topology by showing that the homology of a k-graph coincides with the homology of its topological realisation as described by Kaliszewski et al. We exhibit combinatorial versions of a number of standard topological constructions, and show that they are compatible, from a homological point of view, with their topological counterparts. We show how to twist the C*-algebra of a k-graph by a T-valued 2-cocycle and demonstrate that examples include all noncommutative tori. In t…
