Given a hyperbolic 3-manifold with torus boundary, we bound the change in volume under a Dehn filling where all slopes have length at least 2π. This result is applied to give explicit diagrammatic bounds on the volumes of many knots and links, as well as their Dehn fillings and branched covers. Finally, we use this result to bound the volumes of knots in terms of the coefficients of their Jones polynomials.
We calculate limits of the colored Jones polynomials of the figure-eight knot and conclude that in most cases they determine the volumes and the Chern--Simons invariants of the three-manifolds obtained by Dehn surgeries along it.
Following the approach of Dahmani, Guirardel and Osin, we extend the group theoretical Dehn filling theorem to show that the pre-images of infinite order elements have a certain structure of a free product. We then apply this result to show that groups hyperbolic relative to residually finite groups satisfying the Farrell-Jones conjecture, they satisfy the Farrell-Jones conjecture.
We prove an explicit, quantitative criterion that ensures the Heegaard surfaces in Dehn fillings behave "as expected." Given a cusped hyperbolic manifold X, and a Dehn filling whose meridian and longitude curves are longer than 2pi(2g-1), we show that every genus g Heegaard splitting of the filled manifold is isotopic to a splitting of the original manifold X. The analogous statement holds for fillings of multiple boundary tori. This gives an effective version of a theorem of Moriah-Rubinstein and Rieck-Sedgwick.
To a hyperbolic manifold one can associate a canonical projective structure and ask whether it can be deformed or not. In a cusped manifold, one can ask about the existence of deformations that are trivial on the boundary. We prove that if the canonical projective structure of a cusped manifold is infinitesimally projectively rigid relative to the boundary, then infinitely many Dehn fillings are projectively rigid. We analyze in more detail the figure eight knot and the Withehead link exteriors, for which we can give explicit infinite families of slopes with projectively rigid Dehn fillings.
Any one-cusped hyperbolic manifold M with an unknotting tunnel tau is obtained by Dehn filling a cusp of a two-cusped hyperbolic manifold. In the case where M is obtained by "generic" Dehn filling, we prove that tau is isotopic to a geodesic, and characterize whether tau is isotopic to an edge in the canonical decomposition of M. We also give explicit estimates (with additive error only) on the length of tau relative to a maximal cusp. These results give generic answers to three long-standing questions posed by Adams, Sakuma, and Weeks. We also construct an explicit sequence of one-tunnel knot…
If a simple 3-manifold M admits a reducible and a toroidal Dehn filling, the distance between the filling slopes is known to be bounded by three. In this paper, we classify all manifolds which admit a reducible Dehn filling and a toroidal Dehn filling with distance 3.
In this paper we study the difference between algebraic and geometric solutions of the hyperbolic Dehn filling equations for ideally triangulated 3-manifolds. We show that any geometric solution is an algebraic one, and we prove the uniqueness of the geometric solutions. Then we do explicit calculations for three interesting examples. With the first two examples we see that not all algebraic solutions are geometric and that the algebraic solutions are not unique. The third example is a non-hyperbolic manifold that admits a positive, partially flat solution of the compatibility and completeness…
We introduce and study some deformations of complete finite-volume hyperbolic four-manifolds that may be interpreted as four-dimensional analogues of Thurston's hyperbolic Dehn filling. We construct in particular an analytic path of complete, finite-volume cone four-manifolds $M_t$ that interpolates between two hyperbolic four-manifolds $M_0$ and $M_1$ with the same volume $\frac {8}3π^2$. The deformation looks like the familiar hyperbolic Dehn filling paths that occur in dimension three, where the cone angle of a core simple closed geodesic varies monotonically from $0$ to $2π$. Here, the sin…
We give three infinite families of examples of nonhyperbolic Dehn fillings on hyperbolic manifolds. A manifold in the first family admits two Dehn fillings of distance two apart, one of which is toroidal and annular, and the other is reducible and $\partial$-reducible. A manifold in the second family has boundary consisting of two tori, and admits two reducible Dehn fillings. A manifold in the third family admits a toroidal filling and a reducible filling with distance 3 apart. These examples establish the virtual bounds for distances between certain types of nonhyperbolic Dehn fillings.
This paper gives a quantitative version of Thurston's hyperbolic Dehn surgery theorem. Applications include the first universal bounds on the number of non-hyperbolic Dehn fillings on a cusped hyperbolic 3-manifold, and estimates on the changes in volume and core geodesic length during hyperbolic Dehn filling. The proofs involve the construction of a family of hyperbolic cone-manifold structures, using infinitesimal harmonic deformations and analysis of geometric limits.
If a hyperbolic 3-manifold M admits a reducible and a finite Dehn filling, the distance between the filling slopes is known to be 1. This has been proved recently by Boyer, Gordon and Zhang. The first example of a manifold with two such fillings was given by Boyer and Zhang. In this paper, we give examples of hyperbolic manifolds admitting a reducible Dehn filling and a finite Dehn filling of every type: cyclic, dihedral, tetrahedral, octahedral and icosahedral.
This paper describes the complete list of all 205,822 exceptional Dehn fillings on the 1-cusped hyperbolic 3-manifolds that have ideal triangulations with at most 9 ideal tetrahedra. The data is consistent with the standard conjectures about Dehn filling and suggests some new ones.
We show that there are at most finitely many one cusped orientable hyperbolic 3-manifolds which have more than eight non-hyperbolic Dehn fillings. Moreover, we show that determining these finitely many manifolds is decidable.
We prove results showing that the existence of essential maps of surfaces in a manifold M' obtained from a 3-manifold M by Dehn filling implies the existence of essential maps of surfaces in M.
We show that Dehn filling on the manifold $v2503$ results in a non-orderable space for all rational slopes in the interval $(-\infty , -1)$. This is consistent with the L-space conjecture, which predicts that all fillings will result in a non-orderable space for this manifold.
We prove that any knot or link in any 3-manifold can be nicely decomposed (splitted) by a filling Dehn sphere. This has interesting consequences in the study of branched coverings over knots and links. We give an algorithm for computing Johansson diagrams of filling Dehn surfaces out from coverings of 3-manifolds branched over knots or links.
We study the situation where we have two exceptional Dehn fillings on a given hyperbolic 3-manifold. We consider two cases that one filling creates a projective plane, and the other creates an essential torus or a Klein bottle, and give the best possible upper bound on the distance between two fillings for each case.
Let $M$ be a simple 3-manifold with a toral boundary component. It is known that if two Dehn fillings on $M$ along the boundary produce a reducible manifold and a toroidal manifold, then the distance between the filling slopes is at most three. This paper gives a remarkably short proof of this result.
We study Dehn fillings of relatively hyperbolic group pairs $(Γ, ¶)$ and the persistence of connectedness of Bowditch boundary in sufficiently long Dehn fillings. We show that the restriction of peripheral subgroups to virtually polycyclic subgroups is not needed.
We prove that, for a hyperbolic two bridge knot, infinitely many Dehn fillings are rigid in $SO_0(4,1)$. Here rigidity means that any discrete and faithful representation in $SO_0(4,1)$ is conjugate to the holonomy representation in $SO_0(3,1)$. We also show local rigidity for almost all Dehn fillings.
Let M be a simple 3-manifold with a toral boundary component partial_0 M. If Dehn filling M along partial_0 M one way produces a toroidal manifold and Dehn filling M along partial_0 M another way produces a boundary-reducible manifold, then we show that the absolute value of the intersection number on partial_0 M of the two filling slopes is at most two. In the special case that the boundary-reducing filling is actually a solid torus and the intersection number between the filling slopes is two, more is said to describe the toroidal filling.
Hyperbolic Dehn surgery and the bending procedure provide two ways which can be used to describe hyperbolic deformations of a complete hyperbolic structure on a 3-manifold. Moreover, one can obtain examples of non-Haken manifolds without the use of Thurston's Uniformization Theorem. We review these gluing techniques and present a logical continuity between these ideas and gluing methods for Higgs bundles. We demonstrate how one can construct certain model objects in representation varieties $\text{Hom} \left( π_{1} \left( Σ\right), G \right) $ for a topological surface $Σ$ and a semisimple Lie…
We show that if a simple 3-manifold $M$ has two Dehn fillings at distance $Δ\geq 4$, each of which contains an essential annulus, then $M$ is one of three specific 2-component link exteriors in $S^3$. One of these has such a pair of annular fillings with $Δ= 5$, and the other two have pairs with $Δ= 4$.
We give a summary of known results on the maximal distances between Dehn fillings on a hyperbolic 3-manifold that yield 3-manifolds containing a surface of non-negative Euler characteristic that is either essential or Heegaard.
In this paper we investigate the distances between Dehn fillings on a hyperbolic 3-manifold that yield 3-manifolds containing essential small surfaces including non-orientable surfaces. Especially we study the situations where one filling creates an essential sphere or projective plane, and the other creates an essential sphere, projective plane, annulus, Moebius band, torus or Klein bottle, all 11 pairs of such non-hyperbolic manifolds.
In order to obtain a closed orientable convex projective four-manifold with small positive Euler characteristic, we build an explicit example of convex projective Dehn filling of a cusped hyperbolic four-manifold through a continuous path of projective cone-manifolds.
We show that after generic filling along a torus boundary component of a 3-manifold, no two closed, 2-sided, essential surfaces become isotopic, and no closed, 2-sided, essential surface becomes inessential. That is, the set of essential surfaces (considered up to isotopy) survives unchanged in all suitably generic Dehn fillings. Furthermore, for all but finitely many non-generic fillings, we show that two essential surfaces can only become isotopic in a constrained way.
For a hyperbolic 3-manifold M with a torus boundary component, all but finitely many Dehn fillings on the torus component yield hyperbolic 3-manifolds. In this paper, we will focus on the situation where M has two exceptional Dehn fillings, both of which yield toroidal manifolds. For such situation, Gordon gave an upper bound for the distance between two slopes of Dehn fillings. In particular, if M is large, then the distance is at most 5. We show that this upper bound can be improved by 1 for a broad class of large manifolds.
We give a complete proof of Thurston's celebrated hyperbolic Dehn filling theorem, following the ideal triangulation approach of Thurston and Neumann-Zagier. We avoid to assume that a genuine ideal triangulation always exists, using only a partially flat one, obtained by subdividing an Epstein-Penner decomposition. This forces us to deal with negatively oriented tetrahedra. Our analysis of the set of hyperbolic Dehn filling coefficients is elementary and self-contained. In particular, it does not assume smoothness of the complete point in the variety of deformations.
We show that if a hyperbolic 3-manifold $M$ with a single torus boundary admits two Dehn fillings at distance 5, each of which contains an essential torus, then $M$ is a rational homology solid torus, which is not large in the sense of Wu. Moreover, one of the surgered manifold contains an essential torus which meets the core of the attached solid torus minimally in at most two points. This completes the determination of best possible upper bounds for the distance between two exceptional Dehn fillings yielding essential small surfaces in all ten cases for large hyperbolic 3-manifolds.
In this article, we study the Euler class of taut foliations on the Dehn fillings of a $\mathbb{Q}$-homology solid torus. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for the Euler class of a foliation transverse to the core of the filling solid torus to vanish. We apply this condition to taut foliations on Dehn fillings of hyperbolic fibered manifolds and obtain many new left-orderable Dehn filling slopes on these manifolds. For instance, we show that when $X$ is the exterior of a pretzel knot $P(-2,3,2r+1)$, $r\geq 3$, $π_1(X(α_n))$ is left-orderable for a sequence of positive slopes $α_n$ w…
Let $K= K(w,b,t)$ be a 1-bridge braid in a solid torus $V$, and let $γ$ be a $(p,q)$ curve on the torus $T = \partial V$ of the exterior $M_K$ of $K$. It will be shown that Dehn filling on $T$ along $γ$ produces a solid torus if and only if $p$ and $q$ satisfy one of four conditions determined by the parameters $(w,b,t)$ of the knot $K$. This solves the classification problem raised by Menasco and Zhang for such Dehn fillings.
We provide a calculus for the presentation of closed 3-manifolds via nullhomotopic filling Dehn spheres and we use it to define an invariant of closed 3-manifolds by applying the state-sum machinery. As a potential application of this invariant, we show how to get lower bounds for the Matveev complexity of P2-irreducible closed 3-manifolds. We also describe an easy algorithm for constructing a nullhomotopic filling Dehn sphere of each closed 3-manifold from any of its one-vertex triangulations.
In this paper, we study the Riley polynomial of double twist knots with higher genus. Using the root of the Riley polynomial, we compute the range of rational slope $r$ such that $r$-filling of the knot complement has left-orderable fundamental group. Further more, we make a conjecture about left-orderable surgery slopes of two-bridge knots.
In this paper, we develop a method for constructing left-orders on the fundamental groups of rational homology 3-spheres. We begin by constructing the holonomy extension locus of a rational homology solid torus $M$, which encodes the information about peripherally hyperbolic $\widetilde{\text{PSL}_2\mathbb{R}}$ representations of $π_1(M)$. Plots of the holonomy extension loci of many rational homology solid tori are shown, and the relation to left-orderability is hinted. Using holonomy extension loci, we study rational homology 3-spheres coming from Dehn filling on rational homology solid tori…
Let M be a 1-cusped hyperbolic 3-manifold whose cusp shape is quadratic. We show that there exists c=c(M) such that the number of hyperbolic Dehn fillings of M with any given volume v is uniformly bounded by c.
Dehn fillings for relatively hyperbolic groups generalize the topological Dehn surgery on a non-compact hyperbolic $3$-manifold such as a hyperbolic knot complement. We prove a rigidity result saying that if two non-elementary relatively hyperbolic groups without suitable splittings have sufficiently many isomorphic Dehn fillings, then these groups are in fact isomorphic. Our main application is a solution to the isomorphism problem in the class of non-elementary relatively hyperbolic groups with residually finite parabolic groups and with no suitable splittings.
Every cusped, finite-volume hyperbolic three-manifold has a canonical decomposition into ideal polyhedra. We study the canonical decomposition of the hyperbolic manifold obtained by filling some (but not all) of the cusps with solid tori: in a broad range of cases, generic in an appropriate sense, this decomposition can be predicted from that of the unfilled manifold. As an example, we treat all hyperbolic fillings on one cusp of the Whitehead link complement.
In our previous paper, we discussed the hyperbolization of the configuration space of n(> 4) marked points with weights in the projective line up to projective transformations. A variation of the weights induces a deformation. It was shown that this correspondence of the set of the weights to the Teichmüller space when n = 5 and to the Dehn filling space when n= 6 is locally one-to-one near the equal weight. In this paper, we establish its global injectivity.
Suppose $M$ is a hyperbolic 3-manifold which admits two Dehn fillings $M(r_1)$ and $M(r_2)$ such that $M(r_1)$ contains an essential torus and $M(r_2)$ contains an essential annulus. It is known that $Δ= Δ(r_1, r_2) \leq 5$. We will show that if $Δ= 5$ then $M$ is the Whitehead sister link exterior, and if $Δ= 4$ then $M$ is the exterior of either the Whitehead link or the 2-bridge link associated to the rational number $3/10$. There are infinitely many examples with $Δ= 3$.
These are notes of a talk given at the Mathematische Arbeitstagung 2005 in Bonn. Following ideas of Ozbagci-Stipsicz, a proof based on contact Dehn surgery is given of Eliashberg's concave filling theorem for contact 3-manifolds. The role of that theorem in the Kronheimer-Mrowka proof of property P for nontrivial knots is sketched.
We use Heegaard splittings to give a criterion for a tunnel number one knot manifold to be non-fibered and to have large cyclic covers. We also show that such a knot manifold (satisfying the criterion) admits infinitely many virtually Haken Dehn fillings. Using a computer, we apply this criterion to the 2 generator, non-fibered knot manifolds in the cusped Snappea census. For each such manifold M, we compute a number c(M), such that, for any n>c(M), the n-fold cyclic cover of M is large.
We consider in this paper the minimally twisted chain link with 5 components in the 3-sphere, and we analyze the Dehn surgeries on it, namely the Dehn fillings on its exterior M5. The 3-manifold M5 is a nicely symmetric hyperbolic one, filling which one gets a wealth of hyperbolic 3-manifolds having 4 or fewer (including 0) cusps. In view of Thurston's hyperbolic Dehn filling theorem it is then natural to face the problem of classifying all the exceptional fillings on M5, namely those yielding non-hyperbolic 3-manifolds. Here we completely solve this problem, also showing that, thanks to the s…
We define for each g>=2 and k>=0 a set M_{g,k} of orientable hyperbolic 3-manifolds with $k$ toric cusps and a connected totally geodesic boundary of genus g. Manifolds in M_{g,k} have Matveev complexity g+k and Heegaard genus g+1, and their homology, volume, and Turaev-Viro invariants depend only on g and k. In addition, they do not contain closed essential surfaces. The cardinality of M_{g,k} for a fixed k has growth type g^g. We completely describe the non-hyperbolic Dehn fillings of each M in M_{g,k}, showing that, on any cusp of any hyperbolic manifold obtained by partially filling M, the…
This paper concerns with a rigidity of core geodesics in hyperbolic Dehn fillings. For instance, for an $n$-cusped hyperbolic $3$-manifold $M$ having non-symmetric cusp shapes, we show any Dehn filling of $M$ with sufficiently large coefficient is uniquely determined by the product of the holonomies of its core geodesics. We also explore various implications of the main results. An appendix by I. Agol provides an alternative geometric proof of one of the corollaries of our main arguments.
A generalized torsion element is a non-trivial element such that some non-empty finite product of its conjugates is the identity. We construct a generalized torsion element of the fundamental group of a 3-manifold obtained by Dehn surgery along a knot in the 3-sphere.
We define a new condition on relatively hyperbolic Dehn filling which allows us to control the behavior of a relatively quasiconvex subgroups which need not be full. As an application, in combination with a recent result of Cooper and Futer, we provide a new proof of the virtual fibering of non-compact finite-volume hyperbolic 3-manifolds, a result first proved by Wise. Additionally, we explain how the results of [2, Appendix A] can be generalized to the relative setting to control the relative height of relatively quasiconvex subgroups under appropriate Dehn fillings.
