Suppose $M$ is a hyperbolic 3-manifold which admits two Dehn fillings $M(r_1)$ and $M(r_2)$ such that $M(r_1)$ contains an essential torus and $M(r_2)$ contains an essential annulus. It is known that $Δ= Δ(r_1, r_2) \leq 5$. We will show that if $Δ= 5$ then $M$ is the Whitehead sister link exterior, and if $Δ= 4$ then $M$ is the exterior of either the Whitehead link or the 2-bridge link associated to the rational number $3/10$. There are infinitely many examples with $Δ= 3$.
We show that if a simple 3-manifold $M$ has two Dehn fillings at distance $Δ\geq 4$, each of which contains an essential annulus, then $M$ is one of three specific 2-component link exteriors in $S^3$. One of these has such a pair of annular fillings with $Δ= 5$, and the other two have pairs with $Δ= 4$.
If a simple 3-manifold M admits a reducible and a toroidal Dehn filling, the distance between the filling slopes is known to be bounded by three. In this paper, we classify all manifolds which admit a reducible Dehn filling and a toroidal Dehn filling with distance 3.
Exceptional Dehn surgeries have been classified for 2-bridge knots and Montesinos knots of length at least 4. In this paper we classify all toroidal Dehn surgeries on Montesinos knots of length 3.
A manifold M is simple if it contains no essential disk, sphere, annulus or torus. If M is simple and two Dehn fillings M(r_1), M(r_2) are nonsimple, then there is an upper bound on Δ(r_1,r_2), the geometric intersection number between r_1 and r_2. There are 10 possibilities, depending on the types of M(r_i). In this paper it will be shown that if M(r_1) contains an essential disk and M(r_2) contains an essential annulus, then Δ(r_1,r_2) is at most two. This completes the determination of the best possible upper bounds on Δ(r_1, r_2) for all ten cases.
It is conjectured that a hyperbolic knot admits at most three Dehn surgeries which yield closed three manifolds containing incompressible tori. We show that there exist infinitely many hyperbolic knots which attain the conjectural maximum number. Interestingly, those surgeries correspond to consecutive integers.
Let M be a simple 3-manifold with a toral boundary component partial_0 M. If Dehn filling M along partial_0 M one way produces a toroidal manifold and Dehn filling M along partial_0 M another way produces a boundary-reducible manifold, then we show that the absolute value of the intersection number on partial_0 M of the two filling slopes is at most two. In the special case that the boundary-reducing filling is actually a solid torus and the intersection number between the filling slopes is two, more is said to describe the toroidal filling.
We study the situation where we have two exceptional Dehn fillings on a given hyperbolic 3-manifold. We consider two cases that one filling creates a projective plane, and the other creates an essential torus or a Klein bottle, and give the best possible upper bound on the distance between two fillings for each case.
For a hyperbolic 3-manifold M with a torus boundary component, all but finitely many Dehn fillings on the torus component yield hyperbolic 3-manifolds. In this paper, we will focus on the situation where M has two exceptional Dehn fillings, both of which yield toroidal manifolds. For such situation, Gordon gave an upper bound for the distance between two slopes of Dehn fillings. In particular, if M is large, then the distance is at most 5. We show that this upper bound can be improved by 1 for a broad class of large manifolds.
We show that if a hyperbolic 3-manifold $M$ with a single torus boundary admits two Dehn fillings at distance 5, each of which contains an essential torus, then $M$ is a rational homology solid torus, which is not large in the sense of Wu. Moreover, one of the surgered manifold contains an essential torus which meets the core of the attached solid torus minimally in at most two points. This completes the determination of best possible upper bounds for the distance between two exceptional Dehn fillings yielding essential small surfaces in all ten cases for large hyperbolic 3-manifolds.
We determine all hyperbolic 3-manifolds $M$ admitting two toroidal Dehn fillings at distance 4 or 5. We show that if $M$ is a hyperbolic 3-manifold with a torus boundary component $T_0$, and $r,s$ are two slopes on $T_0$ with $Δ(r,s) = 4$ or 5 such that $M(r)$ and $M(s)$ both contain an essential torus, then $M$ is either one of 14 specific manifolds $M_i$, or obtained from $M_1, M_2, M_3$ or $M_{14}$ by attaching a solid torus to $\partial M_i - T_0$. All the manifolds $M_i$ are hyperbolic, and we show that only the first three can be embedded into $S^3$. As a consequence, this leads to a com…
We give three infinite families of examples of nonhyperbolic Dehn fillings on hyperbolic manifolds. A manifold in the first family admits two Dehn fillings of distance two apart, one of which is toroidal and annular, and the other is reducible and $\partial$-reducible. A manifold in the second family has boundary consisting of two tori, and admits two reducible Dehn fillings. A manifold in the third family admits a toroidal filling and a reducible filling with distance 3 apart. These examples establish the virtual bounds for distances between certain types of nonhyperbolic Dehn fillings.
A Dehn surgery on a knot $K$ in $S^3$ is exceptional if it produces a reducible, toroidal or Seifert fibred manifold. It is known that a large arborescent knot admits no such surgery unless it is a type II arborescent knot. The main theorem of this paper shows that up to isotopy there are exactly three large arborescent knots admitting exceptional surgery, each of which admits exactly one exceptional surgery, producing a toroidal manifold.
The exceptional Dehn filling conjecture of the second author concerning the relationship between exceptional slopes $α, β$ on the boundary of a hyperbolic knot manifold $M$ has been verified in all cases other than small Seifert filling slopes. In this paper we verify it when $α$ is a small Seifert filling slope and $β$ is a toroidal filling slope in the generic case where $M$ admits no punctured-torus fibre or semi-fibre, and there is no incompressible torus in $M(β)$ which intersects $\partial M$ in one or two components. Under these hypotheses we show that $Δ(α, β) \leq 5$. Our proof is bas…
For a hyperbolic 3-manifold $M$ with a torus boundary component, all but finitely many Dehn fillings yield hyperbolic 3-manifolds. In this paper, we will focus on the situation where $M$ has two exceptional Dehn fillings: an annular filling and a toroidal filling. For such situation, Gordon gave an upper bound 5 for the distance between such slopes. Furthermore, the distance 4 is realized only by two specific manifolds, and 5 is realized by a single manifold. These manifolds all have a union of two tori as their boundaries. Also, there is a manifold with three tori as its boundary which realize…
We show that if a Montesinos knot admits a Dehn surgery yielding a toroidal Seifert fibered 3-manifold, then the knot is the trefoil knot and the surgery slope is 0.
Let $M$ be a simple 3-manifold with a toral boundary component. It is known that if two Dehn fillings on $M$ along the boundary produce a reducible manifold and a toroidal manifold, then the distance between the filling slopes is at most three. This paper gives a remarkably short proof of this result.
Suppose $K$ is a hyperbolic knot in a solid torus $V$ intersecting a meridian disk $D$ twice. We will show that if $K$ is not the Whitehead knot and the frontier of a regular neighborhood of $K \cup D$ is incompressible in the knot exterior, then $K$ admits at most one exceptional surgery, which must be toroidal. Embedding $V$ in $S^3$ gives infinitely many knots $K_n$ with a slope $r_n$ corresponding to a slope $r$ of $K$ in $V$. If $r$ surgery on $K$ in $V$ is toroidal then either all but at most three $K_n(r_n)$ are toroidal, or they are all reducible or small Seifert fibered with two commo…
We show that on any hyperbolic knot in $S^3$ there is at most one non-integral Dehn surgery which yields a manifold containing an incompressible torus.
We consider knots whose diagrams have a high amount of twisting of multiple strands. By encircling twists on multiple strands with unknotted curves, we obtain a link called a generalized augmented link. Dehn filling this link gives the original knot. We classify those generalized augmented links that are Seifert fibered, and give a torus decomposition for those that are toroidal. In particular, we find that each component of the torus decomposition is either "trivial", in some sense, or homeomorphic to the complement of a generalized augmented link. We show this structure persists under high D…
For a hyperbolic knot in the 3-sphere, at most finitely many Dehn surgeries yield non-hyperbolic 3-manifolds. As a typical case of such an exceptional surgery, a toroidal surgery is one that yields a closed 3-manifold containing an incompressible torus. The slope corresponding to a toroidal surgery, called a toroidal slope, is known to be integral or half-integral. We show that the distance between two integral toroidal slopes for a hyperbolic knot, except the figure-eight knot, is at most four. Hence any hyperbolic knot admits at most 5 toroidal surgeries.
We define for each g>=2 and k>=0 a set M_{g,k} of orientable hyperbolic 3-manifolds with $k$ toric cusps and a connected totally geodesic boundary of genus g. Manifolds in M_{g,k} have Matveev complexity g+k and Heegaard genus g+1, and their homology, volume, and Turaev-Viro invariants depend only on g and k. In addition, they do not contain closed essential surfaces. The cardinality of M_{g,k} for a fixed k has growth type g^g. We completely describe the non-hyperbolic Dehn fillings of each M in M_{g,k}, showing that, on any cusp of any hyperbolic manifold obtained by partially filling M, the…
For a compact, orientable, irreducible 3-manifold with toroidal boundary that is not the product of a torus and an interval or a cable space, each boundary torus has a finite set of slopes such that, if avoided, the Thurston norm of a Dehn filling behaves predictably. More precisely, for all but finitely many slopes, the Thurston norm of a class in the second homology of the filled manifold plus the so-called winding norm of the class will be equal to the Thurston norm of the corresponding class in the second homology of the unfilled manifold. This generalizes a result of Sela and is used to a…
The construction of knots via annular twisting has been used to create families of knots yielding the same manifold via Dehn surgery. Prior examples have all involved Dehn surgery where the surgery slope is an integral multiple of 2. In this note we prove that for any integer $n$ there exist infinitely many different knots in $S^3$ such that $n$-surgery on those knots yields the same manifold. In particular, when $|n|=1$ homology spheres arise from these surgeries. In addition, when $n \neq 0$ the bridge numbers of the knots constructed tend to infinity as the number of twists along the annulu…
We classify all the non-hyperbolic Dehn fillings of the complement of the chain-link with 3 components, conjectured to be the smallest hyperbolic 3-manifold with 3 cusps. We deduce the classification of all non-hyperbolic Dehn fillings of infinitely many 1-cusped and 2-cusped hyperbolic manifolds, including most of those with smallest known volume. Among other consequences of this classification, we mention the following: - for every integer n we can prove that there are infinitely many hyperbolic knots in the 3-sphere having exceptional surgeries n, n+1, n+2, n+3, with n+1, n+2 giving small S…
Let $F$ be a closed essential surface in a hyperbolic 3-manifold $M$ with a toroidal cusp $N$. The depth of $F$ in $N$ is the maximal distance from points of $F$ in $N$ to the boundary of $N$. It will be shown that if $F$ is an essential pleated surface which is not coannular to the boundary torus of $N$ then the depth of $F$ in $N$ is bounded above by a constant depending only on the genus of $F$. The result is used to show that an immersed closed essential surface in $M$ which is not coannular to the torus boundary components of $M$ will remain essential in the Dehn filling manifold $M(γ)$ a…
Let $T$ be a separating incompressible torus in a 3-manifold $M$. Assuming that a genus $g$ Heegaard splitting $V \cup_S W$ can be positioned nicely with respect to $T$ (e.g. $V \cup_S W$ is strongly irreducible), we obtain an upper bound on the number of stabilizations required for $V \cup_S W$ to become isotopic to a Heegaard splitting which is an amalgamation along $T$. In particular, if $T$ is a canonical torus in the JSJ decomposition of $M$, then the number of necessary stabilizations is at most $4g-4$. As a corollary, this establishes an upper bound on the number of stabilizations requi…
We give a complete description of exceptional surgeries on pretzel knots of type $(-2, p, p)$ with $p \ge 5$. It is known that such a knot admits a unique toroidal surgery yielding a toroidal manifold with a unique incompressible torus. By cutting along the torus, we obtain two connected components, one of which is a twisted $I$-bundle over the Klein bottle. We show that the other is homeomorphic to the one obtained by certain Dehn filling on the magic manifold. On the other hand, we show that all such pretzel knots admit no Seifert fibered surgeries.
If a hyperbolic 3-manifold admits an exceptional Dehn filling, then the length of the slope of that Dehn filling is known to be at most six. However, the bound of six appears to be sharp only in the toroidal case. In this paper, we investigate slope lengths of other exceptional fillings. We construct hyperbolic 3-manifolds that have the longest known slopes for reducible fillings. As an intermediate step, we show that the problem of finding the longest such slope is equivalent to a problem on the maximal density horoball packings of planar surfaces, which should be of independent interest. We …
We prove the Turaev-Viro invariants volume conjecture for a "universal" class of cusped hyperbolic 3-manifolds that produces all 3-manifolds with empty or toroidal boundary by Dehn filling. This leads to two-sided bounds on the volume of any hyperbolic 3-manifold with empty or toroidal boundary in terms of the growth rate of the Turaev-Viro invariants of the complement of an appropriate link contained in the manifold. We also provide evidence for a conjecture of Andersen, Masbaum and Ueno (AMU conjecture) about certain quantum representations of surface mapping class groups. A key step in our …
