Contact Dehn surgery, symplectic fillings, and Property P for knots

These are notes of a talk given at the Mathematische Arbeitstagung 2005 in Bonn. Following ideas of Ozbagci-Stipsicz, a proof based on contact Dehn surgery is given of Eliashberg's concave filling theorem for contact 3-manifolds. The role of that theorem in the Kronheimer-Mrowka proof of property P for nontrivial knots is sketched.

The Dehn surgery characterization of the trefoil and the figure eight knot

We give a Dehn surgery characterization of the trefoil and the figure eight knots. These results are gotten by combining surgery formulas in Heegaard Floer homology from an earlier paper with the characterization of these knots in terms of their knot Floer homology given in a recent paper of Ghiggini.

Fukaya categories of the torus and Dehn surgery

This paper is a companion to the authors' forthcoming work extending Heegaard Floer theory from closed 3-manifolds to compact 3-manifolds with two boundary components via quilted Floer cohomology. Dehn surgery, rational open books and knot Floer homology

By recent results of Baker--Etnyre--Van Horn-Morris, a rational open book decomposition defines a compatible contact structure. We show that the Heegaard Floer contact invariant of such a contact structure can be computed in terms of the knot Floer homology of its (rationally null-homologous) binding. We then use this description of contact invariants, together with a formula for the knot Floer homology of the core of a surgery solid torus, to show that certain manifolds obtained by surgeries on bindings of open books carry tight contact structures. Transverse Surgery on Knots in Contact 3-Manifolds

We study the effect of surgery on transverse knots in contact 3-manifolds. In particular, we investigate the effect of such surgery on open books, the Heegaard Floer contact invariant, and tightness. The overarching theme of this paper is to show that in many contexts, surgery on transverse knots is more natural than surgery on Legendrian knots. Knot surgery and Scharlemann manifolds

We discuss the relation between Fintushel-Stern knot surgery operation on 4-manifolds and Scharlemann manifolds, and as a corollary show that they all are standard. Along the way we show that the fishtail can exotically knot in the 4-sphere infinitely many ways.

Fintushel--Stern knot surgery in torus bundles

Suppose that $X$ is a torus bundle over a closed surface with homologically essential fibers. Let $X_K$ be the manifold obtained by Fintushel--Stern knot surgery on a fiber using a knot $K\subset S^3$. We prove that $X_K$ has a symplectic structure if and only if $K$ is a fibered knot. The proof uses Seiberg--Witten theory and a result of Friedl--Vidussi on twisted Alexander polynomials.

A surgery formula for knot Floer homology

Let $K$ be a rationally null-homologous knot in a $3$-manifold $Y$, equipped with a nonzero framing $λ$, and let $Y_λ(K)$ denote the result of $λ$-framed surgery on $Y$. Ozsváth and Szabó gave a formula for the Heegaard Floer homology groups of $Y_λ(K)$ in terms of the knot Floer complex of $(Y,K)$. Fillable contact structures from positive surgery

We consider the question of when the operation of contact surgery with positive surgery coefficient, along a knot $K$ in a contact 3-manifold $Y$, gives rise to a weakly fillable contact structure. We show that this happens if and only if $Y$ itself is weakly fillable, and $K$ is isotopic to the boundary of a properly embedded symplectic disk inside a filling of $Y$. Luttinger surgery along Lagrangian tori and non-isotopy for singular symplectic plane curves

We discuss the properties of a certain type of Dehn surgery along a Lagrangian torus in a symplectic 4-manifold, known as Luttinger's surgery, and use this construction to provide a purely topological interpretation of a non-isotopy result for symplectic plane curves with cusp and node singularities due to Moishezon.

In this paper we introduce the following new ingredients: (1) rework on part of the Lagrangian surgery theory; (2) constructions of Lagrangian cobordisms on product symplectic manifolds; (3) extending Biran-Cornea Lagrangian cobordism theory to the immersed category.
