The (local) invariant symplectic action functional $\A$ is associated to a Hamiltonian action of a compact connected Lie group $\G$ on a symplectic manifold $(M,ω)$, endowed with a $\G$-invariant Riemannian metric $<\cdot,\cdot>_M$. It is defined on the set of pairs of loops $(x,ξ):S^1\to M\x\Lie\G$ for which $x$ satisfies some admissibility condition. I prove a sharp isoperimetric inequality for $\A$ if $<\cdot,\cdot>_M$ is induced by some $ω$-compatible and $\G$-invariant almost complex structure $J$, and, as an application, an optimal result about the decay at $\infty$ of symplectic vortices on the half-cylinder $[0,\infty)\x S^1$.
Consider a Hamiltonian action of a compact connected Lie group on a symplectic manifold $(M,ω)$. Conjecturally, under suitable assumptions there exists a morphism of cohomological field theories from the equivariant Gromov-Witten theory of $(M,ω)$ to the Gromov-Witten theory of the symplectic quotient. The morphism should be a deformation of the Kirwan map. The idea, due to D. A. Salamon, is to define such a deformation by counting gauge equivalence classes of symplectic vortices over the complex plane $C$. The present memoir is part of a project whose goal is to make this definition rigorous.…
We prove a gluing theorem for a symplectic vortex on a compact complex curve and a collection of holomorphic sphere bubbles. Using the theorem we show that the moduli space of regular stable symplectic vortices on a fixed curve with varying markings has the structure of a stratified-smooth topological orbifold. In addition, we show that the moduli space has a non-canonical $C^1$-orbifold structure.
We prove that the moduli space of gauge equivalence classes of symplectic vortices with uniformly bounded energy in a compact Hamiltonian manifold admits a Gromov compactification by polystable vortices. This extends results of Mundet i Riera and Tian for circle actions to the case of arbitrary compact Lie groups. Our argument relies on an a priori estimate for vortices that allows us to apply techniques used by McDuff and Salamon in their proof of Gromov compactness for pseudoholomorphic curves. As an intermediate result we prove a removable singularity theorem for vortices.
We present the Hamiltonian formalism for the Euler equation of symplectic fluids, introduce symplectic vorticity, and study related invariants. In particular, this allows one to extend D.Ebin's long-time existence result for geodesics on the symplectomorphism group to metrics not necessarily compatible with the symplectic structure. We also study the dynamics of symplectic point vortices, describe their symmetry groups and integrability.
Let $(X,ω)$ be a compact symplectic manifold with a Hamiltonian action of a compact Lie group $G$ and $μ: X\to \mathfrak g$ be its moment map. In this paper, we study the $L^2$-moduli spaces of symplectic vortices on Riemann surfaces with cylindrical ends. We studied a circle-valued action functional whose gradient flow equation corresponds to the symplectic vortex equations on a cylinder $S^1\times \mathbb R$. Assume that $0$ is a regular value of the moment map $μ$, we show that the functional is of Bott-Morse type and its critical points of the functional form twisted sectors of the symplec…
We derive a wall crossing formula for the symplectic vortex invariants of toric manifolds. As an application, we give a proof of Batyrev's formula for the quantum cohomology of a monotone toric manifold with minimal Chern number at least two.
We show that the symplectic reduction of the dynamics of $N$ point vortices on the plane by the special Euclidean group $\mathsf{SE}(2)$ yields a Lie--Poisson equation for relative configurations of the vortices. Specifically, we combine symplectic reduction by stages with a dual pair associated with the reduction by rotations to show that the $\mathsf{SE}(2)$-reduced space with non-zero angular impulse is a coadjoint orbit. This result complements some existing works by establishing a relationship between the symplectic/Hamiltonian structures of the original and reduced dynamics. We also find…
Assume $(X, ω)$ is a compact symplectic manifold with a Hamiltonian compact Lie group action and the zero in the Lie algebra is a regular value of the moment map $μ$. We prove that a finite energy symplectic vortex exponentially converges to (un)twisted sectors of the symplectic reduction at cylinder ends whose metrics grow up at least cylindrically fast, without assuming the group action on the level set $μ^{-1}(0)$ is free. It generalizes the corresponding results by Ziltener [23, 24] under the free action assumption. The result of this paper is the first step in setting up the quotient morp…
Consider a Hamiltonian action of a compact connected Lie group $G$ on an aspherical symplectic manifold $(M,ω)$. Under suitable assumptions, counting gauge equivalence classes of (symplectic) vortices on the plane $R^2$ conjecturally gives rise to a quantum deformation $Qk_G$ of the Kirwan map. This is the second of a series of articles, whose goal is to define $Qk_G$ rigorously. The main result is that every sequence of vortices with uniformly bounded energies has a subsequence that converges to a genus 0 stable map of vortices on $R^2$ and holomorphic spheres in the symplectic quotient. Pote…
We prove the invariant of the symplectic capacity for the Zakharov system on a torus. If the Zakharov solution map is well-defined, then it can be regarded as a symplectomorphism. Thus, we first show the global well-posedness via the local well-posedness and the conservation law. The invariant of the symplectic capacity can be obtained using an approximation method. Many authors use an approximation method to obtain the nonsqueezing theorem, instead of an invariant of the symplectic capacity. However, the conditions of the Hamiltonian system introduced by Kuksin can be relaxed by a new modifie…
We show that the moduli space of regular affine vortices, which are solutions of the symplectic vortex equation over the complex plane, has the structure of a smooth manifold. The construction uses Ziltener's Fredholm theory results [31]. We also extend the result to the case of affine vortices over the upper half plane. These results are necessary ingredients in defining the "open quantum Kirwan map" proposed by Woodward [24].
We study families of objects in Fukaya categories, specifically ones whose deformation behaviour is prescribed by the choice of an odd degree cohomology class. This leads to invariants of symplectic manifolds, which we apply to blowups along symplectic mapping tori.
This paper studies how symplectic invariants created from Hamiltonian Floer theory change under the perturbations of symplectic structures, not necessarily in the same cohomology class. These symplectic invariants include spectral invariants, boundary depth, and (partial) symplectic quasi-states. This paper can split into two parts. In the first part, we prove some energy estimations that control the shifts of symplectic action functionals. These directly imply positive conclusions on the continuity of spectral invariants and boundary depth, in some important cases including any symplectic sur…
We give detailed descriptions of gluing pseudoholomorphic maps in symplectic geometry, especially in the presence of an obstruction bundle. The main motivation is to try to compare the symplectic and enumerative invariants of algebraic manifolds. These descriptions can also be used to enumerate rational curves with high-order degeneracies of local nature in projective spaces.
The shape invariant of a symplectic manifold encodes the possible area classes of embedded Lagrangian tori. Potentially this is a powerful invariant, but for most manifolds the shape is unknown. We compute the shape for 4 dimensional symplectic ellipsoids where the ratio of the factors is an integer. The full shape invariant gives stronger embedding obstructions than results by considering only monotone tori.
In this paper, we investigate the relationship between J-anti-invariant cohomology of a closed symplectic 4-manifold introduced by T.-J. Li and W. Zhang and new symplectic cohomologies introduced by L.-S. Tseng and S.-T. Yau. We also prove that the dimension of J-anti-invariant cohomology is constant for almost structures J which are compatible with a fixed symplectic form.
After reviewing recent results on symplectic Lefschetz pencils and symplectic branched covers of CP^2, we describe a new construction of maps from symplectic manifolds of any dimension to CP^2 and the associated monodromy invariants. We also show that a dimensional induction process makes it possible to describe any compact symplectic manifold by a series of words in braid groups and a word in a symmetric group.
In this paper we define invariants of Hamiltonian group actions for central regular values of the moment map. The key hypotheses are that the moment map is proper and that the ambient manifold is symplectically aspherical. The invariants are based on the symplectic vortex equations. Applications include an existence theorem for relative periodic orbits, a computation for circle actions on a complex vector space, and a theorem about the relation between the invariants introduced here and the Seiberg--Witten invariants of a product of a Riemann surface with a two-sphere.
We consider the equivalence problem for symplectic and conformal symplectic group actions on submanifolds and functions of symplectic and contact linear spaces. This is solved by computing differential invariants via the Lie-Tresse theorem.
Let $M^4$ be a smooth compact manifold with a free circle action generated by a vector field $X.$ Then for any invariant symplectic form $ω$ on $M$ the contracted form $ι_X ω$ is nondegenerate. Using the map $ω--> ι_X ω$ and the related map to $H^1(M / S^1, R)$ we study the topology of the space $S_{inv}$ of invariant symplectic forms. In particular we give a description of $π_0 S_{inv}(M^4)$ in terms of the unit Thurston ball.
We study pseudoholomorphic curves in symplectic quotients as adiabatic limits of solutions of a system of nonlinear first order elliptic partial differential equations in the ambient symplectic manifold. The symplectic manifold carries a Hamiltonian group action. The equations involve the Cauchy-Riemann operator over a Riemann surface, twisted by a connection, and couple the curvature of the connection with the moment map. Our main theorem asserts that the genus zero invariants of Hamiltonian group actions defined by these equations are related to the genus zero Gromov--Witten invariants of th…
Let $(X,\om)$ be a symplectic manifold and $L$ be a Lagrangian submanifold diffeomorphic to $S^n$, $\R¶^n$, or a Lens space of a certain type. Using the symplectic cut and symplectic sum constructions, we express the open Gromov-Witten invariants of $(X,L)$ in terms of open Gromov-Witten invariants of a pair $(X_-,L)$ determined by $L$ and the standard Gromov-Witten invariants of a symplectic manifold $X_+$ determined by $(X,L)$. We also describe other applications of this approach.
We compute the Yamabe invariant for a class of symplectic 4-manifolds of general type obtained by taking the rational blowdown of Kahler surfaces. In particular, for any point on the half-Noether line we exhibit a simply connected minimal symplectic manifold for which we compute the Yamabe invariant.
This paper gives methods for understanding invariants of symplectic quotients. The symplectic quotients considered here are compact symplectic manifolds (or more generally orbifolds), which arise as the symplectic quotients of a symplectic manifold by a compact torus. (A companion paper examines symplectic quotients by a nonabelian group, showing how to reduce to the maximal torus.) Let X be a symplectic manifold, with a Hamiltonian action of a compact torus T. The main topological result of this paper describes an explicit cobordism that exists between a symplectic quotient of X by T, and a c…
We introduce new invariants associated to collections of compact subsets of a symplectic manifold. They are defined through an elementary-looking variational problem involving Poisson brackets. The proof of the non-triviality of these invariants involves various flavors of Floer theory. We present applications to approximation theory on symplectic manifolds and to Hamiltonian dynamics.
Using the degeneration technique, one studies the behavior of Welschinger invariants under the blow-up, and obtains some blow-up formulae of Welschinger invariants. One also analyses the variation of Welschinger invariants when replacing a pair of real points in the real configuration by a pair of conjugated points, and reproves Welschinger's wall crossing formula.
We study the irreducible decomposition under Sp(2n, R) of the space of torsion tensors of almost symplectic connections. Then a description of all symplectic quadratic invariants of torsion-like tensors is given. When applied to a manifold M with an almost symplectic structure, these instruments give preliminary insight for finding a preferred linear almost symplectic connection on M . We rediscover Ph. Tondeur's Theorem on almost symplectic connections. Properties of torsion of the vectorial kind are deduced.
We describe the extent to which Ionel-Parker's proposed refinement of the standard relative Gromov-Witten invariants sharpens the usual symplectic sum formula. The key product operation on the target spaces for the refined invariants is specified in terms of abelian covers of symplectic divisors, making it suitable for studying from a topological perspective. We give several qualitative applications of this refinement, which include vanishing results for Gromov-Witten invariants.
We establish an infinitesimal version of fragility for squared Dehn twists around even dimensional Lagrangian spheres. The precise formulation involves twisting the Fukaya category by a closed two-form or bulk deforming it by a half-dimensional cycle. As our main application, we compute the twisted and bulk deformed symplectic cohomology of the subflexible Weinstein manifolds constructed in \cite{murphysiegel}.
This text is a set of lecture notes for a series of four talks given at I.P.A.M., Los Angeles, on March 18-20, 2003. The first lecture provides a quick overview of symplectic topology and its main tools: symplectic manifolds, almost-complex structures, pseudo-holomorphic curves, Gromov-Witten invariants and Floer homology. The second and third lectures focus on symplectic Lefschetz pencils: existence (following Donaldson), monodromy, and applications to symplectic topology, in particular the connection to Gromov-Witten invariants of symplectic 4-manifolds (following Smith) and to Fukaya catego…
Gromov-Witten invariants of a symplectic manifold are a count of holomorphic curves. We describe a formula expressing the GW invariants of a symplectic sum $X# Y$ in terms of the relative GW invariants of $X$ and $Y$. This formula has several applications to enumerative geometry. As one application, we obtain new relations in the cohomology ring of the moduli space of complex structures on a genus g Riemann surface with n marked points.
We first present the construction of the moduli space of real pseudo-holomorphic curves in a given real symplectic manifold. Then, following the approach of Gromov and Witten, we construct invariants under deformation of real rational symplectic 4-manifolds. These invariants provide lower bounds for the number of real rational $J$-holomorphic curves in a given homology class passing through a given real configuration of points.
We study the symplectic vortex equation over the complex plane, for the target space ${\mathbb C}^N$ ($N\geq 2$) with diagonal U(1)-action. We classify all solutions with finite energy and identify their moduli spaces, which generalizes Taubes' result for N=1. We also studied their compactifications and use them to compute the associated quantum Kirwan maps $κ_Q: H^*_{U(1)}({\mathbb C}^N) \to QH^*({\mathbb P}^{N-1})$.
This article analyzes the interplay between symplectic geometry in dimension four and the invariants for smooth four-manifolds constructed using holomorphic triangles introduced in math.SG/0110169. Specifically, we establish a non-vanishing result for the invariants of symplectic four-manifolds, which leads to new proofs of the indecomposability theorem for symplectic four-manifolds and the symplectic Thom conjecture. As a new application, we generalize the indecomposability theorem to splittings of four-manifolds along a certain class of three-manifolds obtained by plumbings of spheres. This …
Exterior differential forms with values in the (Kostant's) symplectic spinor bundle on a manifold with a given metaplectic structure are decomposed into invariant subspaces. Projections to these invariant subspaces of a covariant derivative associated to a torsion-free symplectic connection are described.
We prove the vanishing of many Welschinger invariants of real symplectic $4$-manifolds. In some particular instances, we also determine their sign and show that they are divisible by a large power of 2. Those results are a consequence of several relations among Welschinger invariants obtained by a real version of symplectic sum formula. In particular, this note contains proofs of results announced in [BP13].
The natural sum operation for symplectic manifolds is defined by gluing along codimension two submanifolds. Specifically, let X be a symplectic 2n-manifold with a symplectic (2n-2)-submanifold V. Given a similar pair (Y,W) with a symplectic identification V=W and a complex anti-linear isomorphism between the normal bundles of V and W, we can form the symplectic sum Z=X # Y. This note announces a general formula for computing the Gromov-Witten invariants of the sum Z in terms of relative Gromov-Witten invariants of (X,V) and (Y,W). Two applications are presented: a short derivation of the Capor…
In the symplectic category there is a `connect sum' operation that glues symplectic manifolds by identifying neighborhoods of embedded codimension two submanifolds. This paper establishes a formula for the Gromov-Witten invariants of a symplectic sum Z=X#Y in terms of the relative GW invariants of X and Y. Several applications to enumerative geometry are given.
We obtain estimates showing that on monotone symplectic manifolds (asymptotic) spectral invariants of Hamiltonians which vanish on a non-empty open set, U, descend to Ham_c(M\setminus U) from its universal cover. Furthermore, we show these invariants and are continuous with respect to the C^0-topology on Ham_c(M\setminus U). We apply these results to Hofer geometry and establish unboundedness of the Hofer diameter of $Ham_c(M\setminus U)$ for stably displaceable $U$. We also answer a question of F. Le Roux about $C^0$-continuity properties of the Hofer metric.
In this paper we construct and classify Lagrangian T^3-fibrations on non compact symplectic manifolds with singular fibres of prescribed topological type. This contributes to the understanding of the structure of the singular fibres that may appear on a mirror pair of T^3-fibred Calabi-Yau 3-folds.
We introduce the concept of pseudo symplectic capacities which is a mild generalization of that of symplectic capacities. As a generalization of the Hofer-Zehnder capacity we construct a Hofer-Zehnder type pseudo symplectic capacity and estimate it in terms of Gromov-Witten invariants. The (pseudo) symplectic capacities of Grassmannians and some product symplectic manifolds are computed. As applications we first derive some general nonsqueezing theorems that generalize and unite many previous versions, then prove the Weinstein conjecture for cotangent bundles over a large class of symplectic u…
Following the approach of Gromov and Witten, we define invariants under deformation of stongly semipositive real symplectic six-manifolds. These invariants provide lower bounds in real enumerative geometry, namely for the number of real rational $J$-holomorphic curves which realize a given homology class and pass through a given real configuration of points.
All second order scalar differential invariants of symplectic hyperbolic and elliptic Monge-Ampère equations with respect to symplectomorphisms are explicitly computed. In particular, it is shown that the number of independent second order invariants is equal to 7, in sharp contrast with general Monge-Ampère equations for which this number is equal to 2. We also introduce a series of invariant differential forms and vector fields which allows us to construct numerous scalar differential invariants of higher order. The introduced invariants give a solution of the symplectic equivalence of Monge…
For a complex projective manifold Gromov-Witten invariants can be constructed either algebraically or symplectically. Using the versions of Gromov-Witten theory by Behrend and Fantechi on the algebraic side and by the author on the symplectic side, we prove that both points of view give the same results. A similar statement has been obtained independently by Li and Tian using their definitions of algebraic and symplectic Gromov-Witten invariants (alg-geom/9712035).
This set of lectures aims to give an overview of Donaldson's theory of linear systems on symplectic manifolds and the algebraic and geometric invariants to which they give rise. After collecting some of the relevant background, we discuss topological, algebraic and symplectic viewpoints on Lefschetz pencils and branched covers of the projective plane. The later lectures discuss invariants obtained by combining this theory with pseudo-holomorphic curve methods.
We prove that symplectic 4-manifolds with $b_1 = 0$ and $b^+ > 1$ have nonvanishing Donaldson invariants, and that the canonical class is always a basic class. We also characterize in many situations the basic classes of a Lefschetz fibration over the sphere which evaluate maximally on a generic fiber.
We use Donaldson hypersurfaces to construct pseudo-cycles which define Gromov-Witten invariants for any symplectic manifold which agree with the invariants in the cases where transversality could be achieved by perturbing the almost complex structure.
Calculating the spectral invariant of Floer homology of the distance function, we can find some kind of superheavy subsets in symplectic manifolds. We show if convex open subsets in Euclidian space with the standard symplectic form are disjointly embedded in a spherically negative monotone closed symplectic manifold, their compliment is superheavy. In particular, the $S^1$ bouquet in a closed Riemann surface with genus $g\geq 1$ is superheavy. We also prove some analogous properties of a monotone closed symplectic manifold. These can be used to extend Seyfaddni's result about lower bounds of P…
The purpose of this note is to prove that the symplectic mapping class groups of many K3 surfaces are infinitely generated. Our proof makes no use of any Floer-theoretic machinery but instead follows the approach of Kronheimer and uses invariants derived from the Seiberg-Witten equations.
In this paper we exploit the geometric approach to the virtual fundamental class, due to Fukaya-Ono and Li-Tian, to compare the virtual fundamental classes of stable maps to a symplectic manifold and a symplectic submanifold whenever all constrained stable maps to the former are contained in the latter to first order. This extends versions of a statement well-known in the algebraic category to the symplectic category, where it appears to be less familiar. The latter's inherent flexibility then leads to a confirmation of Pandharipande's Gopakumar-Vafa prediction for GW-invariants of Fano classe…
We make use of $\mathcal{F}$-structures and technology developed by Paternain - Petean to compute minimal entropy, minimal volume, and Yamabe invariant of symplectic 4-manifolds, as well as to study their collapse with sectional curvature bounded from below. À la Gompf, we show that these invariants vanish on symplectic 4-manifolds that realize any given finitely presented group as their fundamental group. We extend to the symplectic realm a result of LeBrun which relates the Kodaira dimension with the Yamabe invariant of compact complex surfaces.
Polyfold theory, as developed by Hofer, Wysocki, and Zehnder, is a relatively new approach to resolving transversality issues that arise in the study of $J$-holomorphic curves in symplectic geometry. This approach has recently led to a well-defined Gromov-Witten invariant for $J$-holomorphic curves of arbitrary genus, and for all closed symplectic manifolds. The Gromov-Witten axioms, as originally described by Kontsevich and Manin, give algebraic relationships between the Gromov-Witten invariants. In this paper, we prove the Gromov-Witten axioms for the polyfold Gromov-Witten invariants.
In the present paper, we consider a smooth $C^\infty$ symplectic classification of Lagrangian fibrations near cusp singularities, parabolic orbits and cuspidal tori. We show that for these singularities as well as for an arrangement of singularities known as a flap, which arises in the integrable subcritical Hamiltonian Hopf bifurcation, the action variables form a complete set of $C^\infty$ symplectic invariants. We also give a symplectic classification for parabolic orbits in the real-analytic case. Namely, we prove that a complete symplectic invariant in this case is given by a real-analyti…
We study two related invariants of Lagrangian submanifolds in symplectic manifolds. For a Lagrangian torus these invariants are functions on the first cohomology of the torus. The first invariant is of topological nature and is related to the study of Lagrangian isotopies with a given Lagrangian flux. More specifically, it measures the length of straight paths in the first cohomology that can be realized as the Lagrangian flux of a Lagrangian isotopy. The second invariant is of analytical nature and comes from symplectic function theory. It is defined for Lagrangian submanifolds admitting fibr…
