Point-vortex dynamics describe idealized, non-smooth solutions to the incompressible Euler equations on 2-dimensional manifolds. Integrability results for few point-vortices on various domains is a vivid topic, with many results and techniques scattered in the literature. Here we give a unified framework for proving integrability results for $N=2$, $3$, or $4$ point-vortices (and also more general Hamiltonian systems), based on symplectic reduction theory. The approach works on any 2-dimensional manifold; we illustrate it on the sphere, the plane, the hyperbolic plane, and the flat torus. A systematic study of integrability is prompted by advances in 2-dimensional turbulence, bridging the long-time behaviour of 2D Euler equations with questions of point-vortex integrability. A gallery of solutions is given in the appendix.
An algebraic background in order to study the integrability properties of pseudo-null curve motions in a $3$-dimensional Lorentzian space form is developed. As an application we delve into the relationship between the Burgers' equation and the pseudo-null vortex filament equation. A recursion operator for the pseudo-null vortex filament equation is also provided.
We investigate the reduction process of a k-symplectic field theory whose Lagrangian is invariant under a symmetry group. We give explicit coordinate expressions of the resulting reduced partial differential equations, the so-called Lagrange-Poincare field equations. We discuss two issues about reconstructing a solution from a given solution of the reduced equations. The first one is an interpretation of the integrability conditions, in terms of the curvatures of some connections. The second includes the introduction of the concept of a k-connection to provide a reconstruction method. We show …
We present a Hamiltonian framework for higher-dimensional vortex filaments (or membranes) and vortex sheets as singular 2-forms with support of codimensions 2 and 1, respectively, i.e. singular elements of the dual to the Lie algebra of divergence-free vector fields. It turns out that the localized induction approximation (LIA) of the hydrodynamical Euler equation describes the skew-mean-curvature flow on vortex membranes of codimension 2 in any dimension, which generalizes the classical binormal, or vortex filament, equation in 3D. This framework also allows one to define the symplectic struc…
We obtain a Hitchin-Kobayashi-type correspondence for symplectic vortex equations, with the target a Kahler cone over a compact Sasakian manifold. We show that the correspondence reduces to studying the existence and uniqueness of Kazdan-Warner equations. Using this, we construct a map between the moduli space of solutions to the symplectic vortex equations and effective divisors.
The Mishchenko-Fomenko theorem on noncommutative integrability of Hamiltonian systems on a symplectic manifold is extended to the case of noncompact invariant submanifolds.
In this paper we present novel integrable symplectic maps, associated with ordinary difference equations, and show how they determine, in a remarkably diverse manner, the integrability, including Lax pairs and the explicit solutions, for integrable partial difference equations which are the discrete counterparts of integrable partial differential equations of Korteweg-de Vries-type (KdV-type). As a consequence it is demonstrated that several distinct Hamiltonian systems lead to one and the same difference equation by means of the Liouville integrability framework. Thus, these integrable symple…
We prove that integrability of a dispersionless Hirota type equation implies the symplectic Monge-Ampere property in any dimension $\geq 4$. In 4D this yields a complete classification of integrable dispersionless PDEs of Hirota type through a list of heavenly type equations arising in self-dual gravity. As a by-product of our approach we derive an involutive system of relations characterising symplectic Monge-Ampere equations in any dimension. Moreover, we demonstrate that in 4D the requirement of integrability is equivalent to self-duality of the conformal structure defined by the characteri…
The class of five integrable vortex equations discussed recently by Manton is extended so it includes the relativistic BPS Chern-Simons vortices, yielding a total of nineteen vortex equations. Not all the nineteen vortex equations are integrable, but four new integrable equations are discovered and we generalize them to infinitely many sets of four integrable vortex equations, with each set denoted by its integer order $n$. Their integrability is similar to the known cases, but give rise to different (generalized) Baptista geometries, where the Baptista metric is a conformal rescaling of the b…
We obtain compatible Hamiltonian and symplectic structure for a new two-component fifth-order integrable system recently found by Mikhailov, Novikov and Wang (arXiv:0712.1972), and show that this system possesses a hereditary recursion operator and infinitely many commuting symmetries and conservation laws, as well as infinitely many compatible Hamiltonian and symplectic structures, and is therefore completely integrable. The system in question admits a reduction to the Kaup--Kupershmidt equation.
The moduli space of solutions to the vortex equations on a Riemann surface are well known to have a symplectic (in fact Kähler) structure. We show this symplectic structure explictly and proceed to show a family of symplectic (in fact, Kähler) structures $Ω_{Ψ_0}$ on the moduli space, parametrised by $Ψ_0$, a section of a line bundle on the Riemann surface. Next we show that corresponding to these there is a family of prequantum line bundles ${\mathcal P}_{Ψ_0} $on the moduli space whose curvature is proportional to the symplectic forms $Ω_{Ψ_0}$.
We discuss the integrability of Jacobi manifolds by contact groupoids, and then look at what the Jacobi point of view brings new into Poisson geometry. In particular, using contact groupoids, we prove a Kostant-type theorem on the prequantization of symplectic groupoids, which answers a question posed by Weinstein and Xu \cite{prequan}. The methods used are those of Crainic-Fernandes on $A$-paths and monodromy group(oid)s of algebroids. In particular, most of the results we obtain are valid also in the non-integrable case.

This is the second of two companion papers. We describe a generalization of the point vortex system on surfaces to a Hamiltonian dynamical system consisting of two or three points on complex projective space CP^2 interacting via a Hamiltonian function depending only on the distance between the points. The system has symmetry group SU(3). The first paper describes all possible momentum values for such systems, and here we apply methods of symplectic reduction and geometric mechanics to analyze the possible relative equilibria of such interacting generalized vortices. The different types of poly…
Using geometrical approach exposed in arXiv:math/0304245 and arXiv:nlin/0511012, we explore the Camassa-Holm equation (both in its initial scalar form, and in the form of 2x2-system). We describe Hamiltonian and symplectic structures, recursion operators and infinite series of symmetries and conservation laws (local and nonlocal).
We give a method to determine relative periodic orbits in point vortex systems: it consists mainly into perform a symplectic reduction on a fixed point submanifold in order to obtain a two-dimensional reduced phase space. The method is applied to point vortices systems on a sphere and on the plane, but works for other surfaces with isotropy (cylinder, ellipsoid, ...). The method permits also to determine some relative equilibria and heteroclinic cycles connecting these relative equilibria.
Using the result by D.Gessler (Differential Geom. Appl. 7 (1997) 303-324, DIPS-9/98, http://diffiety.ac.ru/preprint/98/09_98abs.htm), we show that any invariant variational bivector (resp., variational 2-form) on an evolution equation with nondegenerate right-hand side is Hamiltonian (resp., symplectic).
We discuss a framework for quantizing a Poisson manifold via the quantization of its symplectic groupoid, that combines the tools of geometric quantization with the results of Renault's theory of groupoid C*-algebras. This setting allows very singular polarizations. In particular we consider the case when the modular function is "multiplicatively integrable", i.e. when the space of leaves of the polarization inherits a groupoid structure. If suitable regularity conditions are satisfied, then one can define the quantum algebra as the convolution algebra of the subgroupoid of leaves satisfying t…
A Hamilton-Jacobi theory for general dynamical systems, defined on fibered phase spaces, has been recently developed. In this paper we shall apply such a theory to contact Hamiltonian systems, as those appearing in thermodynamics and on geodesic flows in fluid mechanics. We first study the partial and complete solutions of the Hamilton-Jacobi Equation (HJE) related to these systems. Then we show that, for a given contact system, the knowledge of what we have called a complete pseudo-isotropic solution ensures the integrability by quadratures of its equations of motion. This extends to contact …
We consider nonholonomic geodesic flows of left-invariant metrics and left-invariant nonintegrable distributions on compact connected Lie groups. The equations of geodesic flows are reduced to the Euler-Poincare-Suslov equations on the corresponding Lie algebras. The Poisson and symplectic structures give raise to various algebraic constructions of the integrable Hamiltonian systems. On the other hand, nonholonomic systems are not Hamiltonian and the integration methods for nonholonomic systems are much less developed. In this paper, using chains of subalgebras, we give constructions that lead…
We study the relation between a given set of equations of motion in configuration space and a Poisson bracket. A Poisson structure is consistent with the equations of motion if the symplectic form satisfy some consistency conditions. When the symplectic structure is commutative these conditions are the Helmholtz integrability equations for the nonrestricted inverse problem of the calculus of variations. We have found the corresponding consistency conditions for the symplectic noncommutative case.
Motivated by the recent connection between nonholonomic integrable systems and twisted Poisson manifolds made in \cite{balseiro_garcia_naranjo}, this paper investigates the global theory of integrable Hamiltonian systems on almost symplectic manifolds as an initial step to understand Hamiltonian integrability on twisted Poisson (and Dirac) manifolds. Non-commutative integrable Hamiltonian systems on almost symplectic manifolds were first defined in \cite{fasso_sansonetto}, which proved existence of local generalised action-angle coordinates in the spirit of the Liouville-Arnol'd theorem. In an…
We present an algebraic formulation of the notion of integrability of dynamical systems, based on a nilpotency property of its flow: it can be explicitly described as a polynomial on its evolution parameter. Such a property is established in a purely geometric--algebraic language, in terms both of the algebra of all higher-order constants of the motion (named the nilpotent algebra of the dynamics), and of a maximal Abelian algebra of symmetries (called a Cartan subalgebra of the dynamics). It is shown that this notion of integrability amounts to the annihilator of the nilpotent algebra being c…
Ultra-cold quantum turbulence is expected to decay through a cascade of Kelvin waves. These helical excitations couple vorticity to the quantum fluid causing long wavelength phonon fluctuations in a Bose-Einstein condensate. This interaction is hypothesized to be the route to relaxation for turbulent tangles in quantum hydrodynamics. The local induction approximation is the lowest order approximation to the Biot-Savart velocity field induced by a vortex line and, because of its integrability, is thought to prohibit energy transfer by Kelvin waves. Using the Biot-Savart description, we derive a…
Non-holonomic deformations of integrable equations of the KdV hierarchy are studied by using the expansions over the so-called "squared solutions" (squared eigenfunctions). Such deformations are equivalent to perturbed models with external (self-consistent) sources. In this regard, the KdV6 equation is viewed as a special perturbation of KdV equation. Applying expansions over the symplectic basis of squared eigenfunctions, the integrability properties of the KdV hierarchy with generic self-consistent sources are analyzed. This allows one to formulate a set of conditions on the perturbation ter…
This paper studies the reduced dynamics of the three-vortex problem from the point of view of Lie-Poisson reduction on the dual of the Lie algebra of $ U(2) $. The algebraic study leading to this point of view has been given by Borisov and Lebedev 1998 (see also Bolsinov, Borisov and Mamaev 1999). The main contribution of this paper is to properly describe the dynamics as a Lie-Poisson reduced system on $ (\mathfrak{u}(2) ^\ast, \{\;,\,\}_{\text{LP}} ) $, giving a systematic construction of a one-parameter family of covectors $ \{ σ_1, σ_2, σ_3 \} $ closely related to Pauli spin matrices, and …
We study the integrability of a family of birational maps obtained as reductions of the discrete Hirota equation, which are related to travelling wave solutions of the lattice KdV equation. In particular, for reductions corresponding to waves moving with rational speed N/M on the lattice, where N,M are coprime integers, we prove the Liouville integrability of the maps when N + M is odd, and prove various properties of the general case. There are two main ingredients to our construction: the cluster algebra associated with each of the Hirota bilinear equations, which provides invariant (pre)sym…
We introduce a notion of quasi-antisymmetric Higgs $G$-bundles over curves with marked points. They are endowed with additional structures, which replace the parabolic structures at marked points in the parabolic Higgs bundles. The latter means that the coadjoint orbits are attached to the marked points. The moduli spaces of parabolic Higgs bundles are the phase spaces of complex completely integrable systems. In our case the coadjoint orbits are replaced by the cotangent bundles over some special symmetric spaces in such a way that the moduli space of the modified Higgs bundles are still phas…
The vortex dynamics of Euler's equations for a constant density fluid flow in $R^4$ is studied. Most of the paper focuses on singular Dirac delta distributions of the vorticity two-form $ω$ in $R^4$. These distributions are supported on two-dimensional surfaces termed {\it membranes} and are the analogs of vortex filaments in $R^3$ and point vortices in $R^2$. The self-induced velocity field of a membrane is shown to be unbounded and is regularized using a local induction approximation (LIA). The regularized self-induced velocity field is then shown to be proportional to the mean curvature vec…
