In this version: (1) We correct an error in the proof of Lemma from Sec.2.3 due to an index shift; (2) We extend the characterisation of Monge-Ampere property for PDE in implicit form, in addition to evolutionary form; (3) We prove that integrability in higher dimensions also implies the Monge-Ampere property. We prove that integrability of a dispersionless Hirota type equation implies the symplectic Monge-Ampere property in any dimension $\geq 4$. In 4D this yields a complete classification of integrable dispersionless PDEs of Hirota type through a list of heavenly type equations arising in self-dual gravity. As a by-product of our approach we derive an involutive system of relations characterising symplectic Monge-Ampere equations in any dimension.
Moreover, we demonstrate that in 4D the requirement of integrability is equivalent to self-duality of the conformal structure defined by the characteristic variety of the equation on every solution, which is in turn equivalent to the existence of a dispersionless Lax pair. We also give a criterion of linerisability of a Hirota type equation via flatness of the corresponding conformal structure, and study symmetry properties of integrable equations.
The BKP hierarchy has a two-component analogue (the 2-BKP hierarchy). Dispersionless limit of this multi-component hierarchy is considered on the level of the $τ$-function. The so called dispersionless Hirota equations are obtained from the Hirota equations of the $τ$-function. These dispersionless Hirota equations turn out to be equivalent to a system of Hamilton-Jacobi equations. Other relevant equations, in particular, dispersionless Lax equations, can be derived from these fundamental equations. For comparison, another approach based on auxiliary linear equations is also presented.
We rederive dispersionless Hirota equations of the dispersionless Toda hierarchy from the method of kernel formula provided by Carroll and Kodama. We then apply the method to derive dispersionless Hirota equations of the extended dispersionless BKP(EdBKP) hierarchy proposed by Takasaki. Moreover, we verify associativity equations (WDVV equations) in the EdBKP hierarchy from dispersionless Hirota equations and give a realization of associative algebra with structure constants expressed in terms of residue formula.
The goal of this paper is to identify the universal Whitham hierarchy of genus zero with a dispersionless limit of the multi-component KP hierarchy. To this end, the multi-component KP hierarchy is (re)formulated to depend on several discrete variables called ``charges''. These discrete variables play the role of lattice coordinates in underlying Toda field equations. A multi-component version of the so called differential Fay identity are derived from the Hirota equations of the $τ$-function of this ``charged'' multi-component KP hierarchy. These multi-component differential Fay identities ha…
The dispersionless differential Fay identity is shown to be equivalent to a kernel expansion providing a universal algebraic characterization and solution of the dispersionless Hirota equations. Some calculations based on D-bar data of the action are also indicated.
Equations of dispersionless Hirota type have been thoroughly investigated in the mathematical physics and differential geometry literature. It is known that the parameter space of integrable Hirota type equations in 3D is 21-dimensional and the action of the natural equivalence group Sp(6, R) on the parameter space has an open orbit. However the structure of the `master-equation' corresponding to this orbit remained elusive. Here we prove that the master-equation is specified by the vanishing of any genus 3 theta constant with even characteristic. The rich geometry of integrable Hirota type eq…
We exploit the correspondence between the three-dimensional Lorentzian Einstein-Weyl geometries of the hyper-CR type, and the Veronese webs to show that the former structures are locally given in terms of solutions to the dispersionless Hirota equation. We also demonstrate how to construct hyper-CR Einstein--Weyl structures by Kodaira deformations of the flat twistor space $T\CP^1$, and how to recover the pencil of Poisson structures in five dimensions illustrating the method by an example of the Veronese web on the Heisenberg group.
This paper reconsiders finite variable reductions of the universal Whitham hierarchy of genus zero in the perspective of dispersionless Hirota equations. In the case of one-variable reduction, dispersionless Hirota equations turn out to be a powerful tool for understanding the mechanism of reduction. All relevant equations describing the reduction (Löwner-type equations and diagonal hydrodynamic equations) can be thereby derived and justified in a unified manner. The case of multi-variable reductions is not so straightforward. Nevertheless, the reduction procedure can be formulated in a genera…
We give a derivation of dispersionless Hirota equations for the extended dispersionless Toda hierarchy. We show that the dispersionless Hirota equations are nothing but a direct consequence of the genus-zero topological recursion relation for the topological $CP^1$ model. Using the dispersionless Hirota equations we compute the two point functions and express the result in terms of Catalan number.
We consider dispersionless Lax systems and present a new systematic method of deriving new integrable systems from a given one. We provide examples that include: the dispersionless Hirota equation, the general heavenly equation and the web equations.
The integrable structure, recently revealed in some classical problems of the theory of functions in one complex variable, is discussed. Given a simply connected domain in the complex plane, bounded by a simple analytic curve, we consider the conformal mapping problem, the Dirichlet boundary problem, and to the 2D inverse potential problem associated with the domain. A remarkable family of real-valued functionals on the space of such domains is constructed. Regarded as a function of infinitely many variables, which are properly defined moments of the domain, any functional from the family give…
We study second-order PDEs in 4D for which the conformal structure defined by the characteristic variety of the equation is half-flat (self-dual or anti-self-dual) on every solution. We prove that this requirement implies the Monge-Ampere property. Since half-flatness of the conformal structure is equivalent to the existence of a nontrivial dispersionless Lax pair, our result explains the observation that all known scalar second-order integrable dispersionless PDEs in dimensions four and higher are of Monge-Ampere type. Some partial classification results of Monge-Ampere equations in 4D with h…
In the series of recent publications we have proposed a novel approach to the classification of integrable differential/difference equations in 3D based on the requirement that hydrodynamic reductions of the corresponding dispersionless limits are `inherited' by the dispersive equations. In this paper we extend this to the fully discrete case. Our only constraint is that the initial ansatz possesses a non-degenerate dispersionless limit (this is the case for all known Hirota-type equations). Based on the method of deformations of hydrodynamic reductions, we classify discrete 3D integrable Hiro…
Recently the study of Fay-type identities revealed some new features of the DKP hierarchy (also known as "the coupled KP hierarchy" and "the Pfaff lattice"). Those results are now extended to a Toda version of the DKP hierarchy (tentatively called "the Pfaff-Toda hierarchy"). Firstly, an auxiliary linear problem of this hierarchy is constructed. Unlike the case of the DKP hierarchy, building blocks of the auxiliary linear problem are difference operators. A set of evolution equations for dressing operators of the wave functions are also obtained. Secondly, a system of Fay-like identities (diff…
We give a simple proof that the Neumann coefficients of surface states in Witten's SFT satisfy the Hirota equations for dispersionless KP hierarchy. In a similar way we show that the Neumann coefficients for the three string vertex in the same theory obey the Hirota equations of the dispersionless Toda Lattice hierarchy. We conjecture that the full (dispersive) Toda Lattice hierachy and, even more attractively a two--matrix model, may underlie open SFT.
The paper is an inquiry of the algebraic foundations of the theory of dispersionless integrable hierarchies, like the dispersionless KP and modified KP hierarchies and the universal Whitham's hierarchy of genus zero. It stands out for the idea of interpreting these hierarchies as equations of coisotropic deformations for the structure constants of certain associative algebras. It discusses the link between the structure constants and the Hirota's tau function, and shows that the dispersionless Hirota's bilinear equations are, within this approach, a way of writing the associativity conditions …
We derive the dispersionless Hirota equations of the universal Whitham hierarchy from the kernel formula approach proposed by Carroll and Kodama. Besides, we also verify the associativity equations in this hierarchy from the dispersionless Hirota equations and give a realization of the associative algebra with structure constants expressed in terms of the residue formulas.
We show that evolutionary Hirota type Euler-Lagrange equations in (2+1) dimensions have a symplectic Monge-Ampère form. We consider integrable equations of this type in the sense that they admit infinitely many hydrodynamic reductions and determine Lax pairs for them. For two seven-parameter families of integrable equations converted to two-component form we have constructed Lagrangians, recursion operators and bi-Hamiltonian representations. We have also presented a six-parameter family of tri-Hamiltonian systems.
Using the Hirota representation of dispersionless dKP and dToda hierarchies, we show that the chordal Löwner equations and radial Löwner equations respectively serve as consistency conditions for one variable reductions of these integrable hierarchies. We also clarify the geometric meaning of this result by relating it to the eigenvalue distribution of normal random matrices in the large N limit.
We present a new approach to construction of recursion operators for multidimensional integrable systems which have a Lax-type representation in terms of a pair of commuting vector fields. It is illustrated by the examples of the Manakov--Santini system which is a hyperbolic system in N dependent and N + 4 independent variables, where N is an arbitrary natural number, the six-dimensional generalization of the first heavenly equation, the modified heavenly equation, and the dispersionless Hirota equation.
We discuss the origin of the associativity (WDVV) equations in the context of quasiclassical or Whitham hierarchies. The associativity equations are shown to be encoded in the dispersionless limit of the Hirota equations for KP and Toda hierarchies. We show, therefore, that any tau-function of dispersionless KP or Toda hierarchy provides a solution to associativity equations. In general, they depend on infinitely many variables. We also discuss the particular solution to the dispersionless Toda hierarchy that describes conformal mappings and construct a family of new solutions to the WDVV equa…
We show that the three strings vertex coefficients in light--cone open string field theory satisfy the Hirota equations for the dispersionless Toda lattice hierarchy. We show that Hirota equations allow us to calculate the correlators of an associated quantum system where the Neumann coefficients represent the two--point functions. We consider next the three strings vertex coefficients of the light--cone string field theory on a maximally supersymmetric pp--wave background. Using the previous results we are able to show that these Neumann coefficients satisfy the Hirota equations for the full …
We give the Lax representations for for the elliptic, hyperbolic and homogeneous second order Monge-Ampere equations. The connection between these equations and the equations of hydrodynamical type give us a scalar dispersionless Lax representation. A matrix dispersive Lax representation follows from the correspondence between sigma models, a two parameter equation for minimal surfaces and Monge-Ampere equations. Local as well nonlocal conserved densities are obtained.
The (3+1)-dimensional dispersionless integrable hierarchy and nonlinear Riemann-Hilbert problem associated with the Doubrov-Ferapontov modified heavenly equation
Based on the commutativity of scalar vector fields, an algebraic scheme is developed which leads to a privileged multi-dimensionally consistent 2n+2n-dimensional integrable partial differential equation with the associated eigenfunction constituting an infinitesimal symmetry. The "universal" character of this novel equation of vanishing Pfaffian type is demonstrated by retrieving and generalising to higher dimensions a great variety of well-known integrable equations such as the dispersionless KP and Hirota equations and various avatars of the heavenly equation governing self-dual Einstein spa…
Quasiclassical approximation in the intrinsic description of the vortex filament dynamics is discussed. Within this approximation the governing equations are given by elliptic system of quasi-linear PDEs of the first order. Dispersionless Da Rios system and dispersionless Hirota equation are among them. They describe motion of vortex filament with slow varying curvature and torsion without or with axial flow. Gradient catastrophe for governing equations is studied. It is shown that geometrically this catastrophe manifests as a fast oscillation of a filament curve around the rectifying plane wh…
We consider (3+1)-dimensional second-order evolutionary PDEs where the unknown $u$ enters only in the form of the 2nd-order partial derivatives. For such equations which possess a Lagrangian, we show that all of them have a symplectic Monge--Ampère form and determine their Lagrangians. We develop a calculus for transforming the symmetry condition to a "skew-factorized" form from which we immediately extract Lax pairs and recursion relations for symmetries, thus showing that all such equations are integrable in the traditional sense. We convert these equations together with their Lagrangians to…
