In this paper we present novel integrable symplectic maps, associated with ordinary difference equations, and show how they determine, in a remarkably diverse manner, the integrability, including Lax pairs and the explicit solutions, for integrable partial difference equations which are the discrete counterparts of integrable partial differential equations of Korteweg-de Vries-type (KdV-type). As a consequence it is demonstrated that several distinct Hamiltonian systems lead to one and the same difference equation by means of the Liouville integrability framework. Thus, these integrable symplectic maps may provide an efficient tool for characterizing, and determining the integrability of, partial difference equations.
Hirota's discrete Korteweg-de Vries equation (dKdV) is an integrable partial difference equation on 2-dimensional integer lattice, which approaches the Korteweg-de Vries equation in a continuum limit. We find new transformations to other equations, including a second-degree second-order partial difference equation, which provide an unusual embedding into a three-dimensional lattice. The consistency of the resulting system extends a property that has been widely used to study partial difference equations on multidimensional lattices.
We perform enhanced Lie symmetry analysis of generalized fifth-order Korteweg-de Vries equations with time-dependent coefficients. The corresponding similarity reductions are classified and some exact solutions are constructed.
This is a continuation of Ref.[1](arXiv:nlin.SI/0603008). In the present paper we review solutions to the modified Korteweg-de Vries equation in terms of Wronskians. The Wronskian entry vector needs to satisfy a matrix differential equation set which contains complex operation. This is different from the case of the Korteweg-de Vries equation. We introduce an auxiliary matrix to deal with the complex operation and then we are able to give complete solution expressions for the matrix differential equation set. The obtained solutions to the modified Korteweg-de Vries equation can simply be categ…
Certain explicit solutions to the Korteweg-de Vries equation in the first quadrant of the $xt$-plane are presented. Such solutions involve algebraic combinations of truly elementary functions, and their initial values correspond to rational reflection coefficients in the associated Schrödinger equation. In the reflectionless case such solutions reduce to pure $N$-soliton solutions. An illustrative example is provided.
All three-point and five-point conservation laws for the discrete Korteweg-de Vries equations are found. These conservation laws satisfy a functional equation, which we solve by reducing it to a system of partial differential equations. Our method uses computer algebra intensively, because the determining functional equation is quite complicated.
The Cauchy problem for the Burgers equation and the Korteweg-de Vries equation is considered. Uniform renormalized asymptotic solutions are constructed in cases of a large initial gradient and a perturbed initial weak discontinuity.
We apply the method of nonlinear steepest descent to compute the long-time asymptotics of the Korteweg-de Vries equation for decaying initial data in the soliton and similarity region. This paper can be viewed as an expository introduction to this method.
We solve the Cauchy problem for the Korteweg-de Vries equation with initial conditions which are steplike Schwartz-type perturbations of finite-gap potentials under the assumption that the respective spectral bands either coincide or are disjoint.
We present a new method for computation of the Korteweg-de Vries hierarchy via heat invariants of the 1-dimensional Schrodinger operator. As a result new explicit formulas for the KdV hierarchy are obtained. Our method is based on an asymptotic expansion of resolvent kernels of elliptic operators due to S.Agmon and Y.Kannai.
A differential-algebraic approach to studying the Lax type integrability of the generalized Riemann type hydrodynamic equations at N = 3; 4 is devised. The approach is also applied to studying the Lax type integrability of the well known Korteweg-de Vries dynamical system.
A recursion operator is constructed for a new integrable system of coupled Korteweg - de Vries equations by the method of gauge-invariant description of zero-curvature representations. This second-order recursion operator is characterized by unusual structure of its nonlocal part.
We classify the admissible transformations in a class of variable coefficient Korteweg--de Vries equations. As a result, full description of the structure of the equivalence groupoid of the class is given. The class under study is partitioned into six disjoint normalized subclasses. The widest possible equivalence group for each subclass is found which appears to be generalized extended in five cases. Ways for improvement of transformational properties of the subclasses are proposed using gaugings of arbitrary elements and mapping between classes. The group classification of one of the subclas…
We study numerically the small dispersion limit for the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation $u_t+6uu_x+ε^{2}u_{xxx}=0$ for $ε\ll1$ and give a quantitative comparison of the numerical solution with various asymptotic formulae for small $ε$ in the whole $(x,t)$-plane. The matching of the asymptotic solutions is studied numerically.
We apply the method of nonlinear steepest descent to compute the long-time asymptotics of the Korteweg-de Vries equation with steplike initial data leading to a rarefaction wave. In addition to the leading asymptotic we also compute the next term in the asymptotic expansion of the rarefaction wave, which was not known before.
Explicit hyperelliptic solutions of the modified Korteweg-de Vries equations without any ambiguous parameters were constructed in terms only of the hyperelliptic $\al$-functions over non-degenerated hyperelliptic curve $y^2 = f(x)$ of arbitrary genus $g$. In the derivation, any $θ$-functions or Baker-Akhiezer functions were not essentially used. Then the Miura transformation naturally appears as the connections between the hyperelliptic $\wp$-functions and hyperelliptic $\al$-functions.
We construct a deformation quantized version (ncKdV) of the KdV equation which possesses an infinite set of conserved densities. Solutions of the ncKdV are obtained from solutions of the KdV equation via a kind of Seiberg-Witten map. The ncKdV is related to a modified ncKdV equation by a noncommutative Miura transformation.
Preliminary results about Lie and potential symmetries of a class of Korteweg-de Vries type equations are presented. In order to prove existence of potential symmetries three different systems of so called determining equations are analysed. It is shown that two systems lead only to Lie symmetries while the third system produces potential symmetries provided the equation in question has an appropriate structure
Differential invariants for the maximal Lie invariance group of the Korteweg-de Vries equation are computed using the moving frame method and compared with existing results. Closed forms of differential invariants of any order are presented for two sets of normalization conditions. Minimal bases of differential invariants associated with the chosen normalization conditions are given.
We propose a numerical method for finding solitary wave solutions of generalized Korteweg-de Vries equations by solving the nonlinear eigenvalue problem on an unbounded domain. The artificial boundary conditions are obtained to make the domain finite. We specially discuss the soliton solutions of the K(m, n) equation and KdV-K(m,n) equation. Furthermore for the mixed models of linear and nonlinear dispersion, the collision behaviors of soliton-soliton and soliton-antisoliton are observed.
We introduce a long wave scaling for the Vlasov-Poisson equation and derive, in the cold ions limit, the Korteweg-De Vries equation (in 1D) and the Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation (in higher dimensions, in the presence of an external magnetic field). The proofs are based on the relative entropy method.
A new integrable sixth-order nonlinear wave equation is discovered by means of the Painleve analysis, which is equivalent to the Korteweg - de Vries equation with a source. A Lax representation and a Backlund self-transformation are found of the new equation, and its travelling wave solutions and generalized symmetries are studied.
We establish the nonlinear stability of solitary waves (solitons) and periodic traveling wave solutions (cnoidal waves) for a Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation which includes a fifth order dispersive term. The traveling wave solutions which yield solitons for zero boundary conditions and wave-trains of cnoidal waves for nonzero boundary conditions are analyzed using stability theorems, which rely on the positivity properties of the Fourier transforms. We show that all families of solutions considered here are (orbitally) stable.
We study the small dispersion limit for the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation $u_t+6uu_x+ε^{2}u_{xxx}=0$ in a critical scaling regime where $x$ approaches the trailing edge of the region where the KdV solution shows oscillatory behavior. Using the Riemann-Hilbert approach, we obtain an asymptotic expansion for the KdV solution in a double scaling limit, which shows that the oscillations degenerate to sharp pulses near the trailing edge. Locally those pulses resemble soliton solutions of the KdV equation.
We show how to descritize the Korteweg-de Vries equation in such a way as to preserve all the Lie point symmetries of the continuous differential equation. It is shown that, for a centered implicit scheme, there are at least two possible ways of doing so.
We present in this work the hamiltonian formulation of an octonionic extension for the Korteweg-de Vries equation. The formulation takes into account the non commmutativity and non associativity of the implicit algebra which defines the equation. We also analize the Poisson structure of the hamiltonian formulation. We propose a parametric master Lagrangian which contains the two hamiltonian structures of the integrable octonionic equation.
We discuss universality in random matrix theory and in the study of Hamiltonian partial differential equations. We focus on universality of critical behavior and we compare results in unitary random matrix ensembles with their counterparts for the Korteweg-de Vries equation, emphasizing the similarities between both subjects.
In the small dispersion limit, solutions to the Korteweg-de Vries equation develop an interval of fast oscillations after a certain time. We obtain a universal asymptotic expansion for the Korteweg-de Vries solution near the leading edge of the oscillatory zone up to second order corrections. This expansion involves the Hastings-McLeod solution of the Painlevé II equation. We prove our results using the Riemann-Hilbert approach.
In this paper we discuss some properties of linear fractional dispersive waves. In particular, we compare the dispersion relations emerging from the kinematic wave equation and from the linearised Korteweg - de Vries equation with the corresponding time-fractionalized versions. For this purpose, we evaluate the expressions for the phase velocity and for the group velocity, highlighting the differences not only analytically, but also by means of illuminating plots.
We describe the equivalence groupoid of the class of general Burgers - Korteweg - de Vries equations with space-dependent coefficients. This class is shown to reduce by a family of equivalence transformations to a subclass whose usual equivalence group is four-dimensional. Classified are admissible transformations of this subclass and singled out are its subclasses admitting maximal nontrivial conditional equivalence groups. All of them turn out to have dimension higher than four. In particular, a few new examples of nontrivial cases of normalization in the generalized sense of classes of diff…
We prove the instability of a ``critical'' solitary wave of the generalized Korteweg -- de Vries equation, the one with the speed at the border between the stability and instability regions. The instability mechanism involved is ``purely nonlinear'', in the sense that the linearization at a critical soliton does not have eigenvalues with positive real part. We prove that critical solitons correspond generally to the saddle-node bifurcation of two branches of solitons.
We propose a new family of complex PT-symmetric extensions of the Korteweg-de Vries equation. The deformed equations can be associated to a sequence of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians. The first charges related to the conservation of mass, momentum and energy are constructed. We investigate solitary wave solutions of the equation of motion for various boundary conditions.
Following Deift-Zhou's nonlinear steepest descent method, the long-time asymptotic behavior for the Cauchy problem of the 5th order modified Korteweg-de Vries equation is analyzed. Based on the inverse scattering transform, the 5th order MKdV is transformed to a 2 by 2 oscillatory Riemann-Hilbert problem, then by manipulating the Cauchy operator and reducing the degree of the phase function, the long-time asymptotics of the solution is given in terms of solutions of the parabolic cylinder equation.
We review the construction of homological evolutionary vector fields on infinite jet spaces and partial differential equations. We describe the applications of this concept in three tightly inter-related domains: the variational Poisson formalism (e.g., for equations of Korteweg-de Vries type), geometry of Liouville-type hyperbolic systems (including the 2D Toda chains), and Euler-Lagrange gauge theories (such as the Yang-Mills theories, gravity, or the Poisson sigma-models). Also, we formulate several open problems.
We consider the linearized Korteweg-de-Vries equa- tions, sometimes called Airy equation, on general metric graphs with edge lengths bounded away from zero. We show that pro- perties of the induced dynamics can be obtained by studying boundary operators in the corresponding boundary space indu- ced by the vertices of the graph. In particular, we characterize unitary dynamics and contractive dynamics. We demonstrate our results on various special graphs, including those recently treated in the literature.
We discuss several PT-symmetric deformations of superderivatives. Based on these various possibilities, we propose new families of complex PT-symmetric deformations of the supersymmetric Korteweg-de Vries equation. Some of these new models are mere fermionic extensions of the former in the sense that they are formulated in terms of superspace valued superfields containing bosonic and fermionic fields, breaking however the supersymmetry invariance. Nonetheless, we also find extensions, which may be viewed as new supersymmetric Korteweg-de Vries equation. Moreover, we show that these deformation…
We show how to apply ideas from the theory of rough paths to the analysis of low-regularity solutions to non-linear dispersive equations. Our basic example will be the one dimensional Korteweg--de Vries (KdV) equation on a periodic domain and with initial condition in $\FF L^{α,p}$ spaces. We discuss convergence of Galerkin approximations, a modified Euler scheme and the presence of a random force of white-noise type in time.
In the paper, we consider a stochastic hybrid Korteweg - de Vries - Burgers type equation with multiplicative noise in the form of cylindrical Wiener process. We prove the existence of a martingale solution to the equation studied. The proof of the existence of the solution is based on two approximations of the considered problem and the compactness method. First, we introduce an auxiliary problem corresponding to the equation studied. Then, we prove the existence of a martingale solution to this problem. Finally, we show that the solution of the auxiliary problem converges, in some sense, to …
We address the problem of long-time asymptotics for the solutions of the Korteweg-de Vries equation under low regularity assumptions. We consider rapidly decreasing initial data admitting only a finite number of moments. For the so-called "soliton region", an improved asymptotic estimate is provided, in comparison with the one already present in the literature. Our analysis is based on the dbar steepest descent method proposed by P. Miller and K. T. D. -R. McLaughlin.
We consider the modified Korteweg-de Vries equation, $ u_{xxx} + 6u^2 u_x + u_t \ =\ 0 $, and explore its dynamics in {\it spatial} direction. Higher $x$ derivatives bring about the {\it ghosts}. We argue that these ghosts are benign, i.e. the classical dynamics of this system does not involve a blow-up. This probably means that also the associated quantum problem is well defined.
The Korteweg-de Vries equation u_t+uu_x+u_{xxx}=0 is PT symmetric (invariant under space-time reflection). Therefore, it can be generalized and extended into the complex domain in such a way as to preserve the PT symmetry. The result is the family of complex nonlinear wave equations u_t-iu(i u_x)^epsilon+u_{xxx}=0, where epsilon is real. The features of these equations are discussed. Special attention is given to the epsilon=3 equation, for which conservation laws are derived and solitary waves are investigated.
We propose and demonstrate, with the one-dimensional Korteweg-de Vries-Burgers model, the scenarios of transfer loop and \textit{all-scale} statistical equilibrium, the former being associated to shock formation and the latter to Gaussian distributions as in a canonical ensemble, but with wavelength-dependent temperatures. The discussions emphasize, among the multi-disciplinary relevance, the classical nonlinear acoustics and quantum shock waves, for the possibility of more favorable experimental tests.
