We show how to apply ideas from the theory of rough paths to the analysis of low-regularity solutions to non-linear dispersive equations. Our basic example will be the one dimensional Korteweg--de Vries (KdV) equation on a periodic domain and with initial condition in $\FF L^{α,p}$ spaces. We discuss convergence of Galerkin approximations, a modified Euler scheme and the presence of a random force of white-noise type in time.
We introduce a long wave scaling for the Vlasov-Poisson equation and derive, in the cold ions limit, the Korteweg-De Vries equation (in 1D) and the Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation (in higher dimensions, in the presence of an external magnetic field). The proofs are based on the relative entropy method.
We discuss universality in random matrix theory and in the study of Hamiltonian partial differential equations. We focus on universality of critical behavior and we compare results in unitary random matrix ensembles with their counterparts for the Korteweg-de Vries equation, emphasizing the similarities between both subjects.
We prove the instability of a ``critical'' solitary wave of the generalized Korteweg -- de Vries equation, the one with the speed at the border between the stability and instability regions. The instability mechanism involved is ``purely nonlinear'', in the sense that the linearization at a critical soliton does not have eigenvalues with positive real part. We prove that critical solitons correspond generally to the saddle-node bifurcation of two branches of solitons.
In the small dispersion limit, solutions to the Korteweg-de Vries equation develop an interval of fast oscillations after a certain time. We obtain a universal asymptotic expansion for the Korteweg-de Vries solution near the leading edge of the oscillatory zone up to second order corrections. This expansion involves the Hastings-McLeod solution of the Painlevé II equation. We prove our results using the Riemann-Hilbert approach.
We apply the method of nonlinear steepest descent to compute the long-time asymptotics of the Korteweg-de Vries equation for decaying initial data in the soliton and similarity region. This paper can be viewed as an expository introduction to this method.
We solve the Cauchy problem for the Korteweg-de Vries equation with initial conditions which are steplike Schwartz-type perturbations of finite-gap potentials under the assumption that the respective spectral bands either coincide or are disjoint.
Following Deift-Zhou's nonlinear steepest descent method, the long-time asymptotic behavior for the Cauchy problem of the 5th order modified Korteweg-de Vries equation is analyzed. Based on the inverse scattering transform, the 5th order MKdV is transformed to a 2 by 2 oscillatory Riemann-Hilbert problem, then by manipulating the Cauchy operator and reducing the degree of the phase function, the long-time asymptotics of the solution is given in terms of solutions of the parabolic cylinder equation.
A recursion operator is constructed for a new integrable system of coupled Korteweg - de Vries equations by the method of gauge-invariant description of zero-curvature representations. This second-order recursion operator is characterized by unusual structure of its nonlocal part.
In the paper we consider stochastic Korteweg - de Vries - type equation. We give sufficient conditions for the existence and uniqueness of local mild solution to the equation with additive noise. We discuss possibility of globalization of mild solution, as well.
We study numerically the small dispersion limit for the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation $u_t+6uu_x+ε^{2}u_{xxx}=0$ for $ε\ll1$ and give a quantitative comparison of the numerical solution with various asymptotic formulae for small $ε$ in the whole $(x,t)$-plane. The matching of the asymptotic solutions is studied numerically.
We apply the method of nonlinear steepest descent to compute the long-time asymptotics of the Korteweg-de Vries equation with steplike initial data leading to a rarefaction wave. In addition to the leading asymptotic we also compute the next term in the asymptotic expansion of the rarefaction wave, which was not known before.
We consider the linearized Korteweg-de-Vries equa- tions, sometimes called Airy equation, on general metric graphs with edge lengths bounded away from zero. We show that pro- perties of the induced dynamics can be obtained by studying boundary operators in the corresponding boundary space indu- ced by the vertices of the graph. In particular, we characterize unitary dynamics and contractive dynamics. We demonstrate our results on various special graphs, including those recently treated in the literature.
We address the problem of long-time asymptotics for the solutions of the Korteweg-de Vries equation under low regularity assumptions. We consider rapidly decreasing initial data admitting only a finite number of moments. For the so-called "soliton region", an improved asymptotic estimate is provided, in comparison with the one already present in the literature. Our analysis is based on the dbar steepest descent method proposed by P. Miller and K. T. D. -R. McLaughlin.
A new integrable sixth-order nonlinear wave equation is discovered by means of the Painleve analysis, which is equivalent to the Korteweg - de Vries equation with a source. A Lax representation and a Backlund self-transformation are found of the new equation, and its travelling wave solutions and generalized symmetries are studied.
In this paper we will prove the existence of weak solutions to the Korteweg-de Vries initial value problem on the real line with H^{-1} initial data; moreover, we will study the problem of orbital and asymptotic H^{s} stability of solitons for integers s\ge -1; finally, we will also prove new a priori H^{-1} bounds for solutions to the Korteweg-de Vries equation. The paper will utilise the Miura transformation to link the Korteweg-de Vries equation to the modified Korteweg-de Vries equation.
We consider the Rosenau-Korteweg-de Vries-regularized long wave and Rosenau- Korteweg-de Vries equations, which contain nonlinear dispersive effects. We prove that, as the diffusion parameter tends to zero, the solutions of the dispersive equations converge to the unique entropy solution of a scalar conservation law. The proof relies on deriving suitable a priori estimates together with an application of the compensated compactness method in the L^p setting.
In the paper two kinds of solutions are derived for the complex Korteweg-de Vries equation, including blow-up solutions and non-singular solutions. We derive blow-up solutions from known 1-soliton solution and a double-pole solution. There is a complex Miura transformation between the complex Korteweg-de Vries equation and a modified Korteweg-de Vries equation. Using the transformation, solitons, breathers and rational solutions to the complex Korteweg-de Vries equation are obtained from those of the modified Korteweg-de Vries equation. Dynamics of the obtained solutions are illustrated.
We consider the modified Korteweg-de Vries equation, $ u_{xxx} + 6u^2 u_x + u_t \ =\ 0 $, and explore its dynamics in {\it spatial} direction. Higher $x$ derivatives bring about the {\it ghosts}. We argue that these ghosts are benign, i.e. the classical dynamics of this system does not involve a blow-up. This probably means that also the associated quantum problem is well defined.
The goal of this note is to construct a class of traveling solitary wave solutions for the compound Burgers-Korteweg-de Vries equation by means of a hyperbolic ansatz.
We prove existence and multiplicity of bound and ground state solutions, under appropriate conditions on the parameters, for a bi-harmonic stationary system of coupled nonlinear Schrödinger--Korteweg-de Vries equations.
In this paper, we study a compound Korteweg-de Vries-Burgers equation with a higher-order nonlinearity. A class of solitary wave solutions is obtained by means of a series expansion.
We prove global existence and modified scattering for the solutions of the Cauchy problem to the fractional Korteweg-de Vries equation with cubic nonlinearity for small, smooth and localized initial data.
We study the large time behavior of solutions to the dissipative Korteweg-de Vrie equations $u_t+u_{xxx}+|D|^αu+uu_x=0$ with $0<α<2$. We find $v$ such that $u-v$ decays like $t^{-r(α)}$ as $t\to\infty$ in various Sobolev norm.
The exponential decay rate of $L^2-$norm related to the Korteweg-de Vries equation with localized damping posed on whole real line will be established. In addition, by using classical arguments we determine the $H^1-$norm of the solution associated to Korteweg-de Vries equation with damping in whole domain, can not have a decay property for an arbitrary initial data.
This paper presents an output feedback control law for the Korteweg-de Vries equation. The control design is based on the backstepping method and the introduction of an appropriate observer. The local exponential stability of the closed-loop system is proven. Some numerical simulations are shown to illustrate this theoretical result.
In this paper we express tau functions for the Korteweg de Vries (KdV) equation, as Laplace transforms of iterated Skorohod integrals. Our main tool is the notion of Fredholm determinant of an integral operator. Our result extends the paper of Ikeda and Taniguchi who obtained a stochastic representation of tau functions for the $N$-soliton solutions of KdV as the Laplace transform of a quadratic functional of $N$ independent Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes. Our general result goes beyond the $N$-soliton case and enables us to consider a non soliton solution of KdV associated to a Gaussian process…
We prove local well-posedness of the initial-boundary value problem for the Korteweg-de Vries equation on the right half-line, left half-line, and line segment, in the low regularity setting. This is accomplished by introducing an analytic family of boundary forcing operators, extending the techniques of Colliander-Kenig (2002).
For more than 20 years, the Korteweg-de Vries equation has been intensively explored from the mathematical point of view. Regarding control theory, when adding an internal force term in this equation, it is well known that the Korteweg-de Vries equation is exponentially stable in a bounded domain. In this work, we propose a weak forcing mechanism, with a lower cost than that already existing in the literature, to achieve the result of the global exponential stability to the Korteweg-de Vries equation.
This paper is dedicated to finding the solutions of the equation of the loaded modified Korteweg-de Vries. By the way, it is shown to find the solutions via $(G'/G)$-expansion method that is one of the most effective ways of finding solutions.
We establish local exact control and local exponential stability of periodic solutions of fifth order Korteweg-de Vries type equations in $H^s(\mathbb{T})$, $s>2$. A dissipative term is incorporated into the control which, along with a propagation of regularity property, yields a smoothing effect permitting the application of the contraction principle.
In the course of the years the names of Korteweg and de Vries have come to be closely associated. The equation which is named after them plays a fundamental role in the theory of non-linear partial differential equations. What are the origins of the doctoral dissertation of De Vries and of the Korteweg-de Vries paper? Bastiaan Willink, a distant relative of both of these mathematicians, has sought to answer these questions. This article is based on a lecture delivered by the author at the symposium dedicated to Korteweg and de Vries at University of Amsterdam in September 2003.
The Korteweg-de Vries equation has a central place in a model for waves on shallow water and it is an example of the propagation of weakly dispersive and weakly nonlinear waves. Its history spans a period of about sixty years, starting with experiments of Scott Russell in 1834, followed by theoretical investigations of, among others, Lord Rayleigh and Boussinesq in 1871 and, finally, Korteweg and De Vries in 1895. In this essay we compare the work of Boussinesq and Korteweg-de Vries, stressing essential differences and some interesting connections. Although there exist a number of articles, re…
- This paper presents the design of an output feedback control for a linear Korteweg-de Vries equation. This design is based on the backstepping method which uses a Volterra transformation. An appropriate observer is introduced and the exponential stability of the closed-loop system is proven.
We solve the Cauchy problem for the Korteweg-de Vries equation with steplike quasi-periodic, finite-gap initial conditions under the assumption that the perturbations have a given number of derivatives with finite moments.
We are concerned with the decay of long time solutions of the initial value problem associated with the Schrödinger-Korteweg-de Vries system. We use recent techniques in order to show that solutions of this system decay to zero in the energy space. The result is independent of the integrability of the equations involved and it does not require any size assumptions.
In this article we consider the problem of unique continuation for a class of high order equations of Korteweg-de Vries type which include the kdV hierachy. It is proved that if the difference w of two solutions of an equation of this form has certain exponential decay for x>0 at two different times, then w is identically zero.
We consider a linear Korteweg-de Vries equation on a bounded domain with a left Dirichlet boundary control. The controllability to the trajectories of such a system was proved in the last decade by using Carleman estimates. Here, we go a step further by establishing the exact controllability in a space of analytic functions with the aid of the flatness approach.
We propose a model using the Korteweg-de Vries $(KdV)$ equation on a finite star-shaped network. We first prove the well-posedness of the system and give some regularity results. Then we prove that the energy of the solutions of the dissipative system decays exponentially to zero when the time tends to infinity. Lastly we show an exact boundary controllability result.
Existence and a priori estimates for real-valued periodic solutions to the modified Korteweg-de Vries equation with initial data in $H^s$ are established for $s>0$. The short-time Fourier restriction norm method is employed to overcome the derivative loss. Further, non-existence of solutions below $L^2$ is proved conditional upon conjectured linear Strichartz estimates.
We prove a local well posedness result for the modified Korteweg-de Vries equation in a critical space designed so that is contains self-similar solutions. As a consequence, we can study the flow of this equation around self-similar solutions: in particular, we give an as-ymptotic description of small solutions as t $\rightarrow$ +$\infty$ and construct solutions with a prescribed blow up behavior as t $\rightarrow$ 0.
The aim of this work is to consider the controllability problem of the linear system associated to Korteweg-de Vries Burgers equation posed in the whole real line. We obtain a sort of exact controllability for solutions in $L^2_{loc}(\R^2)$ by deriving an internal observability inequality and a Global Carlemann estimate. Following the ideas contained in \cite{rosier2000}, the problem is reduced to prove an approximate theorem.
In this paper, we develop dispersive PDE techniques for the Fermi--Pasta--Ulam (FPU) system with infinitely many oscillators, and we show that general solutions to the infinite FPU system can be approximated by counter-propagating waves governed by the Korteweg--de Vries (KdV) equation as the lattice spacing approaches zero. Our result not only simplifies the hypotheses but also reduces the regularity requirement in the previous study [45].
This work is divided into two parts. First, we analyze the existence of positive bound and ground states for a second order stationary system coming from a coupled system of nonlinear Schrödinger--Korteweg-de Vries equations. Second, we extend these results for a higher order system of nonlinear Schrödinger--Korteweg-de Vries equations. Looking for "standing-traveling" waves we arrive at a bi-harmonic stationary system, for which we prove the existence and multiplicity of solutions under appropriate conditions on the parameters.
The present paper develops boundary output-feedback stabilization of the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation with sensors and an actuator located at different boundaries (anti collocated set-up) using backstepping method. The feedback control law and output injection gains are found using the backstepping method for linear KdV equation. The proof of stability is based on construction of a strict Lyapunov functional which includes the observer states. A numerical simulation is presented to validate the result.
The initial-boundary value problem for the generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation on a half-line is studied by adapting the initial value techniques developed by Kenig, Ponce and Vega and Bourgain to the initial-boundary setting. The approach consists of replacing the initial-boundary problem by a forced initial value problem. The forcing is selected to satisfy the boundary condition by inverting a Riemann-Liouville fractional integral.
We prove weighted estimates on the linear KdV group, which are scaling sharp. This kind of estimates are in the spirit of that used to prove small data scattering for the generalized KdV equations.
In this paper, we study a class of initial-boundary value problems for the Korteweg-de Vries equation posed on a bounded domain $(0,L)$. We show that the initial-boundary value problem is locally well-posed in the classical Sobolev space $H^s(0,L)$ for $s>-\frac34$, which provides a positive answer to one of the open questions of Colin and Ghidalia .
We study that a solution of the initial value problem associated for the coupled system of equations of Korteweg - de Vries type which appears as a model to describe the strong interaction of weakly nonlinear long waves, has analyticity in time and smoothing effect up to real analyticity if the initial data only has a single point singularity at $x=0.$
In this paper, a viscous shock wave under space-periodic perturbation of generalized Korteweg-de Vries-Burgers equation is investigated. It is shown that if the initial periodic perturbation around the viscous shock wave is small, then the solution time asymptotically tends to a viscous shock wave with a shift partially determined by the periodic oscillations. Moreover the exponential time decay rate toward the viscous shock wave is also obtained for some certain perturbations.
We study the spectral stability of a family of periodic wave trains of the Korteweg-de Vries/Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation $ \partial_t v+v\partial_x v+\partial_x^3 v+δ(\partial_x^2 v +\partial_x^4 v)=0$, $δ>0$, in the Korteweg-de Vries limit $δ\to 0$, a canonical limit describing small-amplitude weakly unstable thin film flow. More precisely, we carry out a rigorous singular perturbation analysis reducing the problem to the evaluation for each Bloch parameter $ξ\in [0,2π]$ of certain elliptic integrals derived formally (on an incomplete set of frequencies/Bloch parameters, hence as necessary …
We prove local well-posedness for the initial-boundary value problem (IBVP) associated to the Schrödinger-Korteweg de Vries system on right and left half-lines. The results are obtained in the low regularity setting by using two analytic families of boundary forcing operators, being one of these family developed by Holmer to study the IBVP associated to the Korteweg-de Vries equation (Communications in Partial Differential Equations, 31 (2006)) and the other family one was recently introduced by Cavalcante (Differential and Integral Equations (2017)) in the context of nonlinear Schrödinger wit…
We solve the Cauchy problem for the modified Korteweg--de Vries equation with steplike quasi-periodic, finite-gap initial conditions under the assumption that the perturbations have a given number of derivatives and moments finite.
Local asymptotic stability analysis is conducted for an initial-boundary-value problem of a Korteweg-de Vries equation posed on a finite interval $\left[0, 2π\sqrt{7/3}\right]$. The equation comes with a Dirichlet boundary condition at the left end-point and both of the Dirichlet and Neumann homogeneous boundary conditions at the right end-point. It is known that the associated linearized equation around the origin is not asymptotically stable. In this paper, the nonlinear Korteweg-de Vries equation is proved to be locally asymptotically stable around the origin through the center manifold met…
