We first present the construction of the moduli space of real pseudo-holomorphic curves in a given real symplectic manifold. Then, following the approach of Gromov and Witten, we construct invariants under deformation of real rational symplectic 4-manifolds. These invariants provide lower bounds for the number of real rational $J$-holomorphic curves in a given homology class passing through a given real configuration of points.
Following the approach of Gromov and Witten, we define invariants under deformation of stongly semipositive real symplectic six-manifolds. These invariants provide lower bounds in real enumerative geometry, namely for the number of real rational $J$-holomorphic curves which realize a given homology class and pass through a given real configuration of points.
We build a bridge between Floer theory on open symplectic manifolds and the enumerative geometry of holomorphic disks inside their Fano compactifications, by detecting elements in symplectic cohomology which are mirror to Landau-Ginzburg potentials. We also treat the higher Maslov index versions of the potentials. We discover a relation between higher disk potentials and symplectic cohomology rings of smooth anticanonical divisor complements (themselves conjecturally related to closed-string Gromov-Witten invariants), and explore several other applications to the geometry of Liouville domains.
In this paper we are interested in the isotopy classes of symplectic log Calabi-Yau divisors in a fixed symplectic rational surface. We give several equivalent definitions and prove the stability, finiteness and rigidity results. Motivated by the problem of counting toric actions, we obtain a general counting formula of symplectic log Calabi-Yau divisors in a restrictive region of $c_1$-nef cone. A detailed count in the case of 2- and 3-point blow-ups of complex projective space for all symplectic forms is also given. In our framework the complexity of the combinatorics of analyzing Delzant po…
I first recall the various problems of real enumerative geometry out of which I could extract some integer valued invariants, providing some real counterpart to Gromov-Witten invariants. I then discuss sharpness of the lower bounds given by these invariants and some of their arithmetical properties. Finally, I present further results which guaranty the presence or absence of pseudo-holomorphic discs with boundary on a Lagrangian submanifold of a given symplectic manifold.
We express the genus-two fixed-complex-structure enumerative invariants of P^2 and P^3 in terms of the genus-zero enumerative invariants. The approach is to relate each genus-two fixed-complex-structure enumerative invariant to the corresponding symplectic invariant.
We prove that the inverse of a mirror map for a toric Calabi-Yau manifold of the form $K_Y$, where $Y$ is a compact toric Fano manifold, can be expressed in terms of generating functions of genus 0 open Gromov-Witten invariants defined by Fukaya-Oh-Ohta-Ono \cite{FOOO10}. Such a relation between mirror maps and disk counting invariants was first conjectured by Gross and Siebert \cite[Conjecture 0.2 and Remark 5.1]{GS11} as part of their program, and was later formulated in terms of Fukaya-Oh-Ohta-Ono's invariants in the toric Calabi-Yau case in \cite[Conjecture 1.1]{CLL12}.
We characterize transversality, non-transversality properties on the moduli space of genus 0 stable maps to a semipositive symplectic manifold of dimension 4, when GW([point],...,[point]) is enumerative. In particular, we show that the intersection theoretic property depends on the existence of a critical point on a stable map.
This is an introduction to: (1) the enumerative geometry of rational curves in equivariant symplectic resolutions, and (2) its relation to the structures of geometric representation theory. Written for the 2015 Algebraic Geometry Summer Institute.
We transform the positive-genus real Gromov-Witten invariants of many real-orientable symplectic threefolds into signed counts of curves. These integer invariants provide lower bounds for counts of real curves of a given genus that pass through conjugate pairs of constraints. We conclude with some implications and related conjectures for one- and two-partition Hodge integrals.
In the symplectic category there is a `connect sum' operation that glues symplectic manifolds by identifying neighborhoods of embedded codimension two submanifolds. This paper establishes a formula for the Gromov-Witten invariants of a symplectic sum Z=X#Y in terms of the relative GW invariants of X and Y. Several applications to enumerative geometry are given.
We define combinatorial counterparts to the geometric string vertices of Sen-Zwiebach and Costello-Zwiebach, which are certain closed subsets of the moduli spaces of curves. Our combinatorial vertices contain the same information as the geometric ones, are effectively computable, and act on the Hochschild chains of a cyclic $A_\infty$-algebra. This is the first in a series of two papers where we define enumerative invariants associated to a pair consisting of a cyclic $A_\infty$-algebra and a splitting of the Hodge filtration on its cyclic homology. These invariants conjecturally generalize th…
The natural sum operation for symplectic manifolds is defined by gluing along codimension two submanifolds. Specifically, let X be a symplectic 2n-manifold with a symplectic (2n-2)-submanifold V. Given a similar pair (Y,W) with a symplectic identification V=W and a complex anti-linear isomorphism between the normal bundles of V and W, we can form the symplectic sum Z=X # Y. This note announces a general formula for computing the Gromov-Witten invariants of the sum Z in terms of relative Gromov-Witten invariants of (X,V) and (Y,W). Two applications are presented: a short derivation of the Capor…
Let $X$ be a real algebraic convex 3-manifold whose real part is equipped with a $Pin^-$ structure. We show that every irreducible real rational curve with non-empty real part has a canonical spinor state belonging to $\{\pm 1\}$. The main result is then that the algebraic count of the number of real irreducible rational curves in a given numerical equivalence class passing through the appropriate number of points does not depend on the choice of the real configuration of points, provided that these curves are counted with respect to their spinor states. These invariants provide lower bounds f…
The first part of this work constructs real positive-genus Gromov-Witten invariants of real-orientable symplectic manifolds of odd "complex" dimensions; the second part studies the orientations on the moduli spaces of real maps used in constructing these invariants. The present paper applies the results of the latter to obtain quantitative and qualitative conclusions about the invariants defined in the former. After describing large collections of real-orientable symplectic manifolds, we show that the real genus 1 Gromov-Witten invariants of sufficiently positive almost Kahler threefolds are s…
In this paper we give concrete estimations for the pseudo symplectic capacities of toric manifolds in combinatorial data. Some examples are given to show that our estimates can compute their pseudo symplectic capacities. As applications we also estimate the symplectic capacities of the polygon spaces. Other related results are impacts of symplectic blow-up on symplectic capacities, symplectic packings in symplectic toric manifolds, the Seshadri constant of an ample line bundle on toric manifolds, and symplectic capacities of symplectic manifolds with $S^1$-action.
The first part of this work constructs positive-genus real Gromov-Witten invariants of real-orientable symplectic manifolds of odd "complex" dimensions; the present part focuses on their properties that are essential for actually working with these invariants. We determine the compatibility of the orientations on the moduli spaces of real maps constructed in the first part with the standard node-identifying immersion of Gromov-Witten theory. We also compare these orientations with alternative ways of orienting the moduli spaces of real maps that are available in special cases. In a sequel, we …
This paper derives an equality between the slab functions in Gross-Siebert program and generating functions of open Gromov-Witten invariants for toric Calabi-Yau manifolds, and thereby confirms a conjecture of Gross-Siebert on symplectic enumerative meaning of slab functions. The proof is based on the open mirror theorem of Chan-Cho-Lau-Tseng \cite{CCLT13}. It shows an instance of correspondence between tropical and symplectic geometry in the open sector.
We outline a proof that the stack of symplectic toric G-manifolds over a fixed orbit space W is a torsor for the stack of symplectic toric G-principal bundles over W.
The present note overviews our recent construction of real Gromov-Witten theory in arbitrary genera for many real symplectic manifolds, including the odd-dimensional projective spaces and the renowned quintic threefold, its properties, and its connections with real enumerative geometry. Our construction introduces the principle of orienting the determinant of a differential operator relative to a suitable base operator and a real setting analogue of the (relative) spin structure of open Gromov-Witten theory. Orienting the relative determinant, which in the now-standard cases is canonically equ…
We define relative Gromov-Witten invariants of a symplectic manifold relative to a codimension two symplectic submanifold. These invariants are the key ingredients in the symplectic sum formula of [IP4]. The main step is the construction of a compact space of `V-stable' maps. Simple special cases include the Hurwitz numbers for algebraic curves and the enumerative invariants of Caporaso and Harris.
In this paper, we complete the classification of six-dimensional closed monotone symplectic manifolds admitting semifree Hamiltonian $S^1$-actions. We also show that every such manifold is $S^1$-equivariantly symplectomorphic to some Käahler Fano manifold with a certain holomorphic Hamiltonian circle action.
We study symplectic structures on Kähler surfaces with p_g = 0. We give an example of a projective surface which admits a symplectic structure which is not compatible with any Kähler metric.
A key result in equivariant symplectic geometry is Delzant's classification of compact connected symplectic toric manifolds. The moment map induces an embedding of the quotient of the manifold by the torus action into the dual of the Lie algebra of the torus; its image is a unimodular ("Delzant") polytope; this gives a bijection between unimodular polytopes and isomorphism classes of compact connected symplectic toric manifolds. In this paper we extend Delzant's classification to non-compact symplectic toric manifolds. For a non-compact symplectic toric manifold the image of the moment map nee…
Let $(X, ω, c_X)$ be a real symplectic 4-manifold with real part $R X$. Let $L \subset R X$ be a smooth curve such that $[L] = 0 \in H_1 (R X ; Z / 2Z)$. We construct invariants under deformation of the quadruple $(X, ω, c_X, L)$ by counting the number of real rational $J$-holomorphic curves which realize a given homology class $d$, pass through an appropriate number of points and are tangent to $L$. As an application, we prove a relation between the count of real rational $J$-holomorphic curves done in math.AG/0303145 and the count of reducible real rational curves done in math.SG/0502355. Fi…
In this paper, we present foundational material towards the development of a rigorous enumerative theory of stable maps with Lagrangian boundary conditions, ie stable maps from bordered Riemann surfaces to a symplectic manifold, such that the boundary maps to a Lagrangian submanifold. Our main application is to a situation where our proposed theory leads to a well-defined algebro-geometric computation very similar to well-known localization techniques in Gromov-Witten theory. In particular, our computation of the invariants for multiple covers of a generic disc bounding a special Lagrangian su…
Let M be the blow--up of a manifold M along a submanifold X. In this paper we present closed formulae for the integral cohomology and the total Chern class of M. As applications we compute the cohomology of the varieties of complete conics and complete quadrices in 3--space, and justify two enumerative results due to Schubert.
We review the string/gauge theory duality relating Chern-Simons theory and topological strings on noncompact Calabi-Yau manifolds, as well as its mathematical implications for knot invariants and enumerative geometry.
For an Abelian surface $A$ with a symplectic action by a finite group $G$, one can define the partition function for $G$-invariant Hilbert schemes \[Z_{A, G}(q) = \sum_{d=0}^{\infty} e(\text{Hilb}^{d}(A)^{G})q^{d}.\] We prove the reciprocal $Z_{A,G}^{-1}$ is a modular form of weight $\frac{1}{2}e(A/G)$ for the congruence subgroup $Γ_{0}(|G|)$, and give explicit expressions in terms of eta products. Refined formulas for the $χ_{y}$-genera of $\text{Hilb}(A)^{G}$ are also given. For the group generated by the standard involution $τ: A \to A$, our formulas arise from the enumerative geometry of t…
Given two Calabi--Yau threefolds which are believed to constitute a mirror pair, there are very precise predictions about the enumerative geometry of rational curves on one of the manifolds which can be made by performing calculations on the other. We review the mechanics of making these predictions, including a discussion of two conjectures which specify how the elusive ``constants of integration'' in the mirror map should be fixed. Such predictions can be useful for checking whether or not various conjectural constructions of mirror manifolds are producing reasonable answers.
We describe an approach to the question of finding real solutions to problems of enumerative geometry, in particular the question of whether a problem of enumerative geometry can have all of its solutions be real. We give some methods to infer one problem can have all of its solutions be real, given that a related problem does. These are used to show many Schubert-type enumerative problems on some flag manifolds can have all of their solutions be real.
We use local Hamiltonian torus actions to degenerate a symplectic manifold to a normal crossings symplectic variety in a smooth one-parameter family. This construction, motivated in part by the Gross-Siebert and B. Parker's programs, contains a multifold version of the usual (two-fold) symplectic cut construction and in particular splits a symplectic manifold into several symplectic manifolds containing normal crossings symplectic divisors with shared irreducible components in one step.
A log symplectic manifold is a Poisson manifold which is generically nondegenerate. We develop two methods for constructing the symplectic groupoids of log symplectic manifolds. The first is a blow-up construction, corresponding to the notion of an elementary modification of a Lie algebroid along a subalgebroid. The second is a gluing construction, whereby groupoids defined on the open sets of an appropriate cover may be combined to obtain global integrations. This allows us to classify all Hausdorff symplectic groupoids of log symplectic manifolds in a combinatorial fashion, in terms of a cer…
A symplectic manifold $(M,ω)$ is called {\em (symplectically) uniruled} if there is a nonzero genus zero GW invariant involving a point constraint. We prove that symplectic uniruledness is invariant under symplectic blow-up and blow-down. This theorem follows from a general Relative/Absolute correspondence for a symplectic manifold together with a symplectic submanifold. A direct consequence is that symplectic uniruledness is a symplectic birational invariant. Here we use Guillemin and Sternberg's notion of cobordism as the symplectic analogue of the birational equivalence.
Let M be a closed oriented smooth 4-manifold admitting symplectic structures. If M is minimal and has b^+=1, we prove that there is a unique symplectic canonical class up to sign, and any real second cohomology class of positive square is represented by symplectic forms. Similar results hold when M is not minimal.
We prove that the information geometry's Frobenius manifold is a symplectic manifold having Poisson structures. By proving this statement, a bridge is created between the theories developed by Vinberg, Souriau and Koszul and the Frobenius manifold approach. Until now these approaches seemed disconnected.
In this article we apply the technique of Luttinger surgery to study the complexity of the fundamental group of symplectic $4$-manifolds with holomorphic Euler number $χ_h=1$. We discuss the topology of symplectic $4$-manifolds with $b^+=1$ and provide various constructions of symplectic $4$-manifolds with $b^+=1$ and prescribed $c_1^2$.
Let M be a closed symplectic manifold of volume V. We say that the symplectic packings of M by ellipsoids are unobstructed if any collection of disjoint symplectic ellipsoids (possibly of different sizes) of total volume less than V admits a symplectic embedding to M. We show that the symplectic packings by ellipsoids are unobstructed for all even-dimensional tori equipped with Kahler symplectic forms and all closed hyperkahler manifolds of maximal holonomy, or, more generally, for closed Campana simple manifolds (that is, Kahler manifolds that are not unions of their complex subvarieties), as…
We define the odd symplectic grassmannians and flag manifolds, which are smooth projective varieties equipped with an action of the odd symplectic group and generalizing the usual symplectic grassmannians and flag manifolds. Contrary to the latter, which are the flag manifolds of the symplectic group, the varieties we introduce are not homogeneous. We argue nevertheless that in many respects the odd symplectic grassmannians and flag manifolds behave like homogeneous varieties; in support of this claim, we compute the automorphism group of the odd symplectic grassmannians, and we prove a Borel-…
In this paper, we construct simply connected symplectic Calabi-Yau 6-manifolds by applying Gompf's symplectic fiber sum operation along $T^4$. Using our construction, we also produce symplectic non-Kähler Calabi-Yau 6-manifolds with fundamental group $\Z$. In this paper, we also produce the first examples of simply connected symplectic Calabi-Yau and non-Calabi-Yau 6-manifolds via coisotropic Luttinger surgery.
This paper is concerned with non-symplectic involutions of irreducible symplectic manifolds of $K3^{[n]}$-type. We will give a criterion for deformation equivalence and use this to give a lattice-theoretic description of all deformation types. While moduli spaces of $K3^{[n]}$-type manifolds with non-symplectic involutions are not necessarily Hausdorff, we will construct quasi-projective moduli spaces for a certain well-behaved class of such pairs.
We study non-symplectic involutions on irreducible symplectic manifolds of K3^{[2]}-type with 19 parameters, which is the second largest possible. We classify the conjugacy classes of cohomological representations into four different types and show that there are at most five deformation types, two of which are given by natural involutions and their flops. Next, we give a geometric realisation of one of the new types using moduli spaces of sheaves on K3 surfaces. The geometry of the manifold and the new involution is described in detail.
The present paper is devoted to the classification of symplectic automorphisms of some hyperkähler manifolds. The results contained here are an explicit classification of prime order automorphisms on manifolds of $K3^{[n]}$ type and a proof that all finite groups of symplectic automorphisms of such manifolds are contained in Conway's group $Co_1$.
Let X be a projective irreducible symplectic manifold and L a non trivial nef divisor on X. Assume that the nef dimension of L is strictly less than the dimension of X. We prove that L is semiample
We construct quasi-projective moduli spaces of $K$-general lattice polarized irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifolds. Moreover, we study their Baily--Borel compactification and investigate a relation between one-dimensional boundary components and equivalence classes of rational Lagrangian fibrations defined on mirror manifolds.
We investigate the stability of fibers of coisotropic fibrations on holomorphic symplectic manifolds and generalize Voisin's result on Lagrangian subvarieties to this framework. We present applications to the moduli space of holomorphic symplectic manifolds which are deformations equivalent to Hilbert schemes of points on a $K3$ surface or to generalized Kummer manifolds.
Exploiting recent results on the ample cone of irreducible symplectic manifolds, we provide a different point of view for the computation of their monodromy groups. In particular, we give the final step in the computation of the monodromy group for generalised Kummer manifolds and we prove that the monodromy of O'Grady's ten dimensional manifold is smaller than what was expected.
We prove that if a symplectic 4-manifold $X$ becomes a rational 4-manifold after applying rational blow-down surgery, then the symplectic 4-manifold $X$ is originally rational. That is, a symplectic rational blow-up of a rational symplectic $4$-manifold is again rational. As an application we show that a degeneration of a family of smooth rational complex surfaces is a rational surface if the degeneration has at most quotient surface singularities, which generalizes slightly a classical result of [Bădescu, 1986] in algebraic geometry under a mild additional condition.
