In this note, which is an addendum to the e-print math.AG/9810121, we prove that the variety VSP(F,10) of presentations of a general cubic form F in 6 variables as a sum of 10 cubes is a smooth symplectic 4-fold, which is deformation equivalent to the Hilbert square of a K3 surface of genus 8 but different from the family of lines on a cubic 4-fold. This provides a new geometric construction of a compact complex symplectic fourfold, different from a Hilbert square of a K3 surface, a generalized Kummer 4-fold, the variety of lines on a cubic 4-fold and the recent examples of O'Grady (see Duke M…
We study holomorphic symplectic manifolds which are fibred by abelian varieties. This structure is a higher dimensional analogue of an elliptic fibration on a K3 surface. We investigate when a holomorphic symplectic manifold is fibred in this way, and are led to several natural conjectures. We then study the geometry of these fibrations. The expectation is that this point of view will prove useful in understanding holomorphic symplectic manifolds, and possibly lead to a classification.
In a recent paper \cite{3}, a semi-stable degeneration of moduli space of Higgs bundles on a curve has been constructed. In this paper, we show that there is a relative log-symplectic form on this degeneration, whose restriction to the generic fibre is the classical symplectic form discovered by Hitchin. We compute the Poisson ranks at every point and describe the symplectic foliation on the closed fibre. We also show that the closed fibre, which is a variety with normal crossing singularities, acquires a structure of an algebraically completely integrable system.
In this note, we investigate fibre space structures of a projective irreducible symplectic manifold. We prove that an 2n-dimensional projective irreducible symplectic manifold admits only an n-dimensional fibration over a Fano variety which has only Q-factorial log-terminal singularities and whose Picard number is one. Moreover we prove that a general fibre is an abelian variety up to finite unramified cover, especially, a general fibre is an abelian surface for 4-fold.
We study the vanishing cycles on the Milnor fibre of a holomorphic map germ with special kind of non-isolated singularities which appear in symplectic geometry. We show, under assumptions given in the text, that the Lefschetz vanishing cycles freely generate the corresponding homology group of the Milnor fibre. We study two examples of applications: involutive systems in symplectic geometry (as characteristic varieties of $\hbar$-differential equations are of this type) and ajoint orbits in Lie algebras.
We describe the minimal number of critical points and the minimal number $s$ of singular fibres for a non isotrivial fibration of a surface $S$ over a curve $B$ of genus $1$, constructing a fibration with $s=1$ and irreducible singular fibre with $4$ nodes. Then we consider the associated factorizations in the mapping class group and in the symplectic group. We describe explicitly which products of transvections on homologically independent and disjoint circles are a commutator in the Symplectic group $Sp (2g, \mathbb{Z})$.
We define and parametrise so-called $\mathfrak{sl}(2)$-type fibres of the $\mathsf{Sp}(2n,\mathbb{C})$- and $\mathsf{SO}(2n+1,\mathbb{C})$-Hitchin system. These are (singular) Hitchin fibres, where the spectral curve induces a two-sheeted covering of a second Riemann surface $Y$. This identifies the $\mathfrak{sl}(2)$-type Hitchin fibres with fibres of an $\mathsf{SL}(2,\mathbb{C})$- respectively $\mathsf{PSL}(2,\mathbb{C})$-Hitchin map on $Y$. We give a stratification of these singular spaces by semi-abelian spectral data, study their irreducible components and obtain a global description of …
We consider birational projective contractions f:X -> Y from a smooth symplectic variety X over the complex numbers. We first show that exceptional rational curves on X deform in a family of dimension at least 2n-2. Then we show that these contractions are generically coisotropic, provided X is projective. Then we specialize to contractions with 1-dimensional exceptional fibres. We classify them in a natural way in terms of (Γ, G), where Γis a Dynkin diagram of type A_l, D_l or E_l and G is a permutation group of automorphisms of Γ. The 1-dimensional fibres do not degenerate, except if the con…
We generalize Fujiki relation of Beauville-Bogomolov quadratic form on a projective symplectic variety. As an application, we study a fibre space structure of a projective symplectic variety.
We study in this paper a new family of stable algebraic symplectic vector bundles of rank $ 2n $ on the complex projective space $P^{2n+1}$ whose classical null correlation bundles belongs. We show that these bundles are invariant under a miniversal deformation. We also study the sufficient cohomological conditions for a symplectic vector bundle on a projective variety to be stable.
Let $X\to¶^n$ be an irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifold of dimension $2n$ fibred over $¶^n$. Matsushita proved that the generic fibre is a holomorphic Lagrangian abelian variety. In this article we study the discriminant locus $Δ\subset¶^n$ parametrizing singular fibres. Our main result is a formula for the degree of $Δ$, leading to bounds on the degree when $X$ is a four-fold.
We give a general construction of extremal Kaehler metrics on the total space of certain holomorphic submersions, extending results of Dervan-Sektnan, Fine, and Hong. We consider submersions whose fibres admit a degeneration to Kaehler manifolds with constant scalar curvature, in a way that is compatible with the fibration structure. Thus we allow fibres that are K-semistable, rather than K-polystable; this is crucial to moduli theory. On these fibrations we phrase a partial differential equation whose solutions, called optimal symplectic connections, represent a canonical choice of a relative…
We consider morphisms $π: X \to \mathbb{P}^1$ of smooth projective varieties over $\mathbb{C}$. We show that if $π$ has at most one singular fibre, then $X$ is uniruled and $π$ admits sections. We reach the same conclusions, but with genus zero multisections instead of sections, if $π$ has at most two singular fibres, and the first Chern class of $X$ is supported in a single fibre of $π$. To achieve these result, we use action completed symplectic cohomology groups associated to compact subsets of convex symplectic domains. These groups are defined using Pardon's virtual fundamental chains pac…
We encode the variation structure of a quasihomogeneous polynomial with an isolated singularity as introduced by Nemethi in a set of spectral flows of the signature operator on the Milnor bundle by varying global elliptic boundary conditions in a specific way using the quasihomogeneous circle action on the Brieskorn lattice. For this, we use adiabatic techniques and well-known results on spectral flow and Maslov index. Furthermore we interpret the inequality of a certain member of this family of spectral flows with a spectral flow induced by a Reeb flow on the boundary of the Milnor fibre as g…
In this paper, we introduce the notions of $p$-Hermitian-symplectic and $p$-pluriclosed compact complex manifolds as generalisations for an arbitrary positive integer $p$ not exceeding the complex dimension of the manifold of the standard notions of Hermitian-symplectic and SKT manifolds that correspond to the case $p=1$. We then notice that these two properties are equivalent on $\partial\bar{\partial}$-manifolds and go on to prove that in (smooth) complex analytic families of $\partial\bar{\partial}$-manifolds, they are deformation open. Concerning closedness results, we prove that the cones…
We study a cylindrical Lagrangian cobordism group for Lagrangian torus fibres in symplectic manifolds which are the total spaces of smooth Lagrangian torus fibrations. We use ideas from family Floer theory and tropical geometry to obtain both obstructions to and constructions of cobordisms; in particular, we give examples of symplectic tori in which the cobordism group has no non-trivial cobordism relations between pairwise distinct fibres, and ones in which the degree zero fibre cobordism group is a divisible group. The results are independent of but motivated by mirror symmetry, and a relati…
We prove that the higher direct images of the dualizing sheaf of a Lagrangian fibration between smooth projective manifolds are isomorphic to the cotangent bundles of base space. As a corollary, we obtain that every Hodge number of the base space of a fibre space of an irreducible symplectic manifold is the same to that of a projective space if the base space is smooth.
Motivated by the study of hyperkahler structures in moduli problems and hyperkahler implosion, we initiate the study of non-reductive hyperkahler and algebraic symplectic quotients with an eye towards those naturally tied to projective geometry, like cotangent bundles of blow-ups of linear arrangements of projective space. In the absence of a Kempf-Ness theorem for non-reductive quotients, we focus on constructing algebraic symplectic analogues of additive quotients of affine spaces, and obtain hyperkahler structures on large open subsets of these analogues by comparison with reductive analogu…
According to Taubes, the Gromov invariants of a symplectic four-manifold X with b_+ > 1 satisfy the duality Gr(A) = +/- Gr(K-A), where K is Poincare dual to the canonical class. Extending joint work with Simon Donaldson in math.SG/0012067, we interpret this result in terms of Serre duality on the fibres of a Lefschetz pencil, by proving an analogous symmetry for invariants counting sections of associated bundles of symmetric products. Using similar methods we give a new proof of an existence theorem for symplectic surfaces in four-manifolds with b_+ = 1 and b_1 = 0. This reproves another theor…
The main result of this paper is to study the local deformations of Calabi-Yau $\partial\bar{\partial}$-manifold that are co-polarised by the Gauduchon metric by considering the subfamily of co-polarised fibres by the class of Aeppli/De Rham-Gauduchon cohomology of Gauduchon metric given at the beginning on the central fibre. In the latter part, we prove that the $p$-SKT $h$-$\partial\bar{\partial}$-property is deformation open by constructing and studying a new notion called $hp$-Hermitian symplectic ($hp$-HS) form.
We prove that any symplectic Fano $6$-manifold $M$ with a Hamiltonian $S^1$-action is simply connected and satisfies $c_1 c_2(M)=24$. This is done by showing that the fixed submanifold $M_{\min}\subseteq M$ on which the Hamiltonian attains its minimum is diffeomorphic to either a del Pezzo surface, a $2$-sphere or a point. In the case when $\dim(M_{\min})=4$, we use the fact that symplectic Fano $4$-manifolds are symplectomorphic to del Pezzo surfaces. The case when $\dim(M_{\min})=2$ involves a study of $6$-dimensional Hamiltonian $S^1$-manifolds with $M_{\min}$ diffeomorphic to a surface of …
Based on the localization result for descendants in rational SFT moduli spaces from our last joint paper, we prove topological recursion relations for the Hamiltonian in SFT of symplectic mapping tori and in local SFT. Combined with the dilaton equation in SFT, we use them to prove a reconstruction theorem for descendants from primaries. While it turns out that (in contrast to Gromov-Witten theory and non-equivariant cylindrical contact homology) the descendant Hamiltonian cannot be computed from the Hamiltonian without descendants alone, we get that the only additional piece of information ne…
We prove that adjoint orbits of semisimple Lie algebras have the structure of symplectic Lefschetz fibrations. We then describe the topology of the regular and singular fibres, in particular calculating their middle Betti numbers. For the example of sl(2,C) we compute the Fukaya--Seidel category of Lagrangian vanishing cycles.
This is a book aimed at graduate students and researchers in symplectic geometry, based on a course I taught in 2019. The primary message is that the base of a Lagrangian torus fibration inherits an integral affine structure, which you can use to "read off" a lot of interesting geometry of the total space. Topics covered include: action-angle coordinates, symplectic reduction, toric manifolds, visible and tropical Lagrangians, almost toric systems, Milnor fibres of cyclic quotient singularities, mutation of polygons, non-toric blow-up, an almost toric view on Lisca's classification of fillings…
This is a survey of the author's book "D-manifolds and d-orbifolds: a theory of derived differential geometry", available at http://people.maths.ox.ac.uk/~joyce/dmanifolds.html We introduce a 2-category dMan of "d-manifolds", new geometric objects which are 'derived' smooth manifolds, in the sense of the 'derived algebraic geometry' of Toen and Lurie. They are a 2-category truncation of the 'derived manifolds' of Spivak (see arXiv:0810.5174, arXiv:1212.1153). The category of manifolds Man embeds in dMan as a full subcategory. We also define 2-categories dMan^b,dMan^c of "d-manifolds with bound…
This is a long summary of the author's book "D-manifolds and d-orbifolds: a theory of derived differential geometry", available at http://people.maths.ox.ac.uk/~joyce/dmanifolds.html . A shorter survey paper on the book, focussing on d-manifolds without boundary, is arXiv:1206.4207, and readers just wanting a general overview are advised to start there.
