We study the vanishing cycles on the Milnor fibre of a holomorphic map germ with special kind of non-isolated singularities which appear in symplectic geometry. We show, under assumptions given in the text, that the Lefschetz vanishing cycles freely generate the corresponding homology group of the Milnor fibre. We study two examples of applications: involutive systems in symplectic geometry (as characteristic varieties of $\hbar$-differential equations are of this type) and ajoint orbits in Lie algebras.
We study families of rational curves on certain irreducible holomorphic symplectic varieties. In particular, we prove that any ample linear system on a projective holomorphic symplectic variety of K3[n]-type contains a uniruled divisor. As an application we provide a generalization of the Beauville-Voisin result on the Chow group of 0-cycles on such varieties.
We formulate a notion of $E_0$ quantisation of $(-1)$-Poisson structures on derived Artin $N$-stacks, and construct a map from $E_0$ quantisations of $(-1)$-shifted symplectic structures to power series in de Rham cohomology. For a square root of the dualising line bundle, this gives an equivalence between even power series and self-dual quantisations. In particular, there is a canonical quantisation of any such square root, which localises to recover the perverse sheaf of vanishing cycles on derived DM stacks, thus giving a form of derived categorification of Donaldson--Thomas invariants.

We study intersections of complex Lagrangian in complex symplectic manifolds, proving two main results. First, we construct global canonical perverse sheaves on complex Lagrangian intersections in complex symplectic manifolds for any pair of {\it oriented} Lagrangian submanifolds in the complex analytic topology. Our method uses classical results in complex symplectic geometry and some results from arXiv:1304.4508. This article is the first in a series of two in which we study the vanishing cycles of curves in toric surfaces. We give a list of possible obstructions to contract vanishing cycles within a given complete linear system. Using tropical means, we show that any non-separating simple closed curve is a vanishing cycle whenever none of the listed obstructions appears.
We develop a theory of tame vanishing cycles for schemes over $[\mathbb{A}^1_{S}/\mathbb{G}_{m,S}]$ in the context of étale sheaves. If $\Adot$ is a bounded, constructible complex of sheaves on a complex analytic space $X$, and $f:X\to\C$ and $g:X\to\C$ are complex analytic functions, then the iterated vanishing cycles $ϕ_g[-1](ϕ_f[-1]\Adot)$ are important for a number of reasons. We give a formula for the stalk cohomology $H^*(ϕ_g[-1]ϕ_f[-1]\Adot)_x$ in terms of relative polar curves, algebra, and the normal Morse data and micro-support of $\Adot$.
Using iterated vanishing cycles and convolution, we prove a motivic version of a conjecture of Steenbrink concerning the spectrum of hypersurface singularities
For a holomorphic function on a complex manifold, we show that the vanishing cohomology of lower degree at a point is determined by that for the points near it, using the perversity of the vanishing cycle complex. We calculate it explicitly in the case the hypersurface has simple normal crossings outside the point. We also give some applications to the monodromy.
We survey nearby and vanishing cycles for both perverse sheaves and D-modules under analytic setting. Following ideas of A. Beilinson, M. Kashiwara and M. Saito, we explain in detail the proof of the comparison theorem between them in the sense of Riemann-Hilbert correspondence.
We show that the motivic vanishing cycles introduced by J. Denef and F. Loeser give rise to a motivic measure on the Grothendieck ring of varieties over the affine line. We discuss the relation of this motivic measure to the motivic measure we constructed earlier using categories of matrix factorizations.
Given the germ of an analytic function on affine space with a smooth critical locus, we prove that the constancy of the stalk cohomology of the Milnor fiber in lowest degree off a codimension two subset of the critical locus implies that the vanishing cycles are concentrated in lowest degree and are constant.
In this paper we discuss an obstruction to the integral Hodge conjecture, which arises from certain behavior of vanishing cycles. This allows us to construct new counter-examples to the integral Hodge conjecture. One typical such counter-example is the product of a very general hypersurface of odd dimension and an Enriques surface. Our approach generalizes the degeneration argument of Benoist-Ottem.
Moduli spaces of stable objects in the derived category of a $K3$ surface provide a large class of holomorphic symplectic varieties. In this paper, we study the interplay between Chern classes of stable objects and zero-cycles on holomorphic symplectic varieties which arise as moduli spaces. First, we show that the second Chern class of any object in the derived category lies in a suitable piece of O'Grady's filtration on the $\mathrm{CH}_0$-group of the $K3$ surface. We extend the results from the previous paper by A. Frühbis-Krüger and the author [arXiv:1501.01915] to the vanishing topology of those singularities in the title. Studying the case of possibly non-isolated singularities in the Tjurina- transform, we reveal that in dimension 3 and 2 there always is exactly one special vanishing cycle in degree 2 closely related to the determinantal structure of the singularity.
We show that using an idea from a paper by Van de Ven one may obtain a simple proof of Zak's classification of smooth projective surfaces with zero vanishing cycles. This method of proof allows one to extend Zak's theorem to the case of finite characteristic.
We extend slightly the results of Evens-Mirković, and "compute" the characteristic cycles of Intersection Cohomology sheaves on the transversal slices in the double affine Grassmannian and on the hypertoric varieties. We propose a conjecture relating the hyperbolic stalks and the microlocalization at a torus-fixed point in a Poisson variety.
In the definition of irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifolds the condition of being simply connected can be replaced by vanishing irregularity. We discuss finite quotients X of complex tori where the space of reflexive 2-forms is generated by a holomorphic symplectic form, and their Lagrangian fibrations. Neither X nor the base can be smooth unless X is a 2-torus.
As is remarked by B. Totaro, R. Thomas essentially proved that the Hodge conjecture is inductively equivalent to the existence of a hyperplane section, called a generalized Thomas hyperplane section, such that the restriction to it of a given primitive Hodge class does not vanish. Let $X$ be a closed Riemann surface. When $X$ is embedded into a projective space, the first rational cohomology group can be concretely obtained from the monodromy in the family of its smooth hyperplane sections by C. Schnell's tube mapping. We generalize this result to the first integral homology group by relating the tube mapping with the topological Abel--Jacobi mapping. By making use of the mapping class group action, we prove that all tube classes constructed from the elementary vanishing cycles form a cofinite subgroup of the first integral homology group of $X$.
A study of certain symplectic $4$-orbifolds with vanishing canonical class is initiated. We show that for any such symplectic $4$-orbifold $X$, there is a canonically constructed symplectic $4$-orbifold $Y$, together with a cyclic orbifold covering $Y\rightarrow X$, such that $Y$ has at most isolated Du Val singularities and a trivial orbifold canonical line bundle. The minimal resolution of $Y$, to be denoted by $\tilde{Y}$, is a symplectic Calabi-Yau $4$-manifold endowed with a natural symplectic finite cyclic action, extending the deck transformations of the orbifold covering $Y\rightarrow …
We consider the Lie algebra consisting of all derivations on the free associative algebra, generated by the first homology group of a closed oriented surface, which kill the symplectic class. We find the first non-trivial abelianization of this Lie algebra and discuss its relation to unstable cohomology classes of the moduli space of curves via a theorem of Kontsevich.
Let $X$ be a general complete intersection of a given multi-degree in a complex projective space. Suppose that the anti-canonical line bundle of $X$ is ample. Using the cylinder homomorphism associated with the family of complete intersections contained in $X$, we prove that the vanishing cycles in the middle homology group of $X$ are represented by topological cycles whose support is contained in a proper Zariski closed subset $T\subset X$ of certain codimension. In this paper we prove an explicit formula which compares the dimensions of the spaces of vanishing cycles in a Galois cover of degree p between formal germ of curves over a complete discrete valuation ring of inequal characteristics (0,p). This formula can be easily generalised to the case of a Galois cover with group which is nilpotent or which has a normal p-Sylow subgroup. We study families of rational curves on irreducible holomorphic symplectic varieties. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a sufficiently ample linear system on a holomorphic symplectic variety of $K3^{[n]}$-type to contain a uniruled divisor covered by rational curves of primitive class. In particular, for any fixed $n$, we show that there are only finitely many polarization types of holomorphic symplectic variety of $K3^{[n]}$-type that do not contain such a uniruled divisor. We prove that the integral Hodge conjecture holds for 1-cycles on irreducible holomorphic symplectic varieties of K3 type and of Generalized Kummer type. As an application, we give a new proof of the integral Hodge conjecture for cubic fourfolds.
Suppose that the critical locus $Σ$ of a complex analytic function $f$ on affine space is, itself, a space with an isolated singular point at the origin $\0$, and that the Milnor number of $f$ restricted to normal slices of $Σ-\{\0\}$ is constant. Then, the general theory of perverse sheaves puts severe restrictions on the cohomology of the Milnor fiber of $f$ at $\0$, and even more surprising restrictions on the cohomology of the Milnor fiber of generic hyperplane slices.
Given a smooth formal scheme over the ring of integers of a mixed-characteristic perfectoid field, we study its $p$-adic vanishing cycles via de Rham--Witt and $q$-de Rham complexes.
We study the vanishing cycles of a one-parameter smoothing of a complex analytic space and show that the weight filtration on its perverse cohomology sheaf of the highest degree is quite close to the monodromy filtration so that its graded pieces have a modified Lefschetz decomposition. In the geometric situation of the simple Shimura varieties of Kottwitz studied in Harris and Taylor's book, we describe the monodromy filtration of the vanishing cycles complex and the spectral sequence associated to it. We prove in particular that this filtration coincides with the weight one up to shift. Thanks to the Berkovich-Fargues' theorem, we deduce the description of the local monodromy filtration of the Deligne-Carayol model. For a local system and a function on a smooth complex algebraic variety, we give a proof of a conjecture of M. Kontsevich on a formula for the vanishing cycles using the twisted de Rham complex of the formal microlocalization of the corresponding locally free sheaf with integrable connection having regular singularity at infinity. We study the monodromy of vanishing cycles for map-germs $f:(C^{2n},0) \to (\CM^k,0)$ whose components are in involution. Although the singular fibres of such maps have non-isolated singularities, it is shown that the regular fibres are $2(n-k)$-connected and that the vanishing homology group of rank $2(n-k)+1$ is freely generated by the vanishing cycles.
