Enhanced ind-sheaves provide a suitable framework for the irregular Riemann-Hilbert correspondence. In this paper, we give some precisions on nearby and vanishing cycles for enhanced perverse objects in dimension one. As an application, we give a topological proof of the following fact. Let $\mathcal M$ be a holonomic algebraic $\mathcal D$-module on the affine line, and denote by ${}^{\mathsf{L}}\mathcal M$ its Fourier-Laplace transform. For a point $a$ on the affine line, denote by $\ell_a$ the corresponding linear function on the dual affine line. Then, the vanishing cycles of $\mathcal M$ at $a$ are isomorphic to the graded component of degree $\ell_a$ of the Stokes filtration of ${}^{\mathsf{L}}\mathcal M$ at infinity.
We survey nearby and vanishing cycles for both perverse sheaves and D-modules under analytic setting. Following ideas of A. Beilinson, M. Kashiwara and M. Saito, we explain in detail the proof of the comparison theorem between them in the sense of Riemann-Hilbert correspondence.
The purpose of this paper is to give two applications of Fourier transforms and generic vanishing theorems: - we give a cohomological characterization of principal polarizations - we prove that if $X$ an abelian variety and $Θ$ a polarization of type $(1,...,1,2)$, then a general pair $(X,Θ)$ is log canonical
The aim of this mainly expository note is to point out that, given an Fourier-Mukai functor, the condition making it fully faithful is an instance of \emph{generic vanishing}. We test this point of view on some fairly classical examples, including the strong simplicity criterion of Bondal and Orlov, the standard flip and the Mukai flop.
We recall the construction of the Hodge character and we show, using a result due to F. Bittner, that these can be constructed using classical pure Hodge theory only, sideskipping Deligne's construction of functorial mixed Hodge structures on the cohomology of algberaic varieties. We then give a proof, based on the weak factorization theorem, that the nearby fibre is well-defined in the Grothendieck group of varieties. Finally, various formulas for numerical invariants of Hodge-theoretic origin are presented which are associated to one-parameter degenerations of projective manifolds.
We use homological methods to establish a formal criterion for Generic Vanishing, in the sense originated by Green and Lazarsfeld and pursued further by Hacon and the first author, but in the context of an arbitrary Fourier-Mukai correspondence. For smooth projective varieties we apply this to deduce a Kodaira-type generic vanishing theorem for adjoint bundles of the form $K_X + L$ with $L$ a nef line bundle, and in fact a more general generic Nadel-type vanishing theorem for multiplier ideal sheaves. Still in the context of the Picard variety, the same method generates various other generic v…
In the first part of this paper we prove a vanishing criterion for higher direct images of projective families of line bundles on a Cohen-Macaulay variety X. The result involves certain first-order deformations of certain curves on X, and makes essential use of the notion of global co-gaussian maps, a generalization of Wahl's gaussian maps. In the second part we apply the criterion above, combined with Fourier-Mukai transform on abelian varieties, to prove an algebraic version of Green-Lazarsfeld's Generic Vanishing Theorem. In fact we prove a stronger result concerning higher direct images of…
In this article, we give a simple proof of the comparison of nearby and vanishing cycles in the sense of Riemann-Hilbert correspondence following the idea of Beilinson and Bernstein, without using the Kashiwara-Malgrange $V$-filtrations.
In this thesis, two $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}_\ell$-local systems, $\vphantom{\mathcal{E}}^\circ \mathcal{E}$ and $\vphantom{E}^\circ \mathcal{E}^\prime$ on the regular unipotent subvariety $\mathcal{U}_{0,K}$ of $p$-adic $\operatorname{SL}_2(K)$ are constructed. Making use of the equivalence between $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}_\ell$-local systems and $\ell$-adic representations of the étale fundamental group, we prove that these local systems are equivariant with respect to conjugation by $\operatorname{SL}_2(K)$ and that their nearby cycles, when taken with respect to appropriate integral models, descend to l…
We prove that the shifted vanishing cycles and nearby cycles commute with Verdier dualizing up to a {\bf natural} isomorphism, even when the coefficients are not in a field.
We will establish a nearby and vanishing cycle formalism for the arithmetic $\mathscr{D}$-module theory following Beilinson's philosophy. As an application, we define smooth objects in the framework of arithmetic $\mathscr{D}$-modules whose category is equivalent to the category of overconvergent isocrystals.
We give a reduction of the irregular case for the effective non-vanishing conjecture by virtue of the Fourier-Mukai transform. As a consequence, we reprove that the effective non-vanishing conjecture holds on algebraic surfaces.
We employ the perverse vanishing cycles to show that each reduced cohomology group of the Milnor fiber, except the top two, can be computed from the restriction of the vanishing cycle complex to only singular strata with a certain lower bound in dimension. Guided by geometric results, we alternately use the nearby and vanishing cycle functors to derive information about the Milnor fiber cohomology via iterated slicing by generic hyperplanes. These lead to the description of the reduced cohomology groups, except the top two, in terms of the vanishing cohomology of the nearby section. We use it …
We propose a slightly modified definition for the Fourier-Mukai transform (on abelian varieties) that makes it much easier to remember various formulas. As an application, we give relatively short proofs for two important theorems: the characterization of GV-sheaves in terms of vanishing, due to Hacon; and fact that M-regularity implies (continuous) global generation, due to Pareschi and Popa.
This paper studies the sliced nearby cycle functor and its commutation with duality. Over a Henselian discrete valuation ring, we show that this commutation holds, confirming a prediction of Deligne. As an application we give a new proof of Beilinson's theorem that the vanishing cycle functor commutes with duality up to twist. Over an excellent base scheme, we show that the sliced nearby cycle functor commutes with duality up to modification of the base. We deduce that duality preserves universal local acyclicity over an excellent regular base. We also present Gabber's theorem that local acycl…
We extend to manifolds of arbitrary dimension the Castelnuovo-de Franchis inequality for surfaces. The proof is based on the theory of Generic Vanishing and higher regularity, and on the Evans-Griffith Syzygy Theorem in commutative algebra. Along the way we give a positive answer, in the setting of Kähler manifolds, to a question of Green-Lazarsfeld on the vanishing of higher direct images of Poincaré bundles. We indicate generalizations to arbitrary Fourier-Mukai transforms.
We show the compatibility between the moderate or nearby cycle functor for regular holonomic $\mathcal{D}$-modules, as defined by Beilinson, Kashiwara and Malgrange, and the Hermitian duality functor, as defined by Kashiwara.
We extend the dimension and strong linearity results of generic vanishing theory to bundles of holomorphic forms and rank one local systems, and more generally to certain coherent sheaves of Hodge-theoretic origin associated to irregular varieties. Our main tools are Saito's mixed Hodge modules, the Fourier-Mukai transform for D-modules on abelian varieties introduced by Laumon and Rothstein, and Simpson's harmonic theory for flat bundles. In the process, we discover two natural categories of perverse coherent sheaves, one on the Picard variety, and the other on the moduli space of Higgs line …
On the product elliptic threefold $X = C \times S$ where $C$ is an elliptic curve and $S$ is a K3 surface of Picard rank 1, we define a notion of limit tilt stability, which satisfies the Harder-Narasimhan property. We show that under the Fourier-Mukai transform $Φ$ on $D^b(X)$ induced by the classical Fourier-Mukai transform on $D^b(C)$, a slope stable torsion-free sheaf satisfying a vanishing condition in codimension 2 (e.g. a reflexive sheaf) is taken to a limit tilt stable object. We also show that a limit tilt semistable object on $X$ is taken by $Φ$ to a slope semistable sheaf, up to mod…
We focus on a class of Weierstrass elliptic threefolds that allows the base of the fibration to be a Fano surface or a numerically $K$-trivial surface. We define the notion of limit tilt stability, and show that the Fourier-Mukai transform of a slope stable torsion-free sheaf satisfying a vanishing condition in codimension 2 (e.g. a reflexive sheaf) is a limit tilt stable object. We also show that the inverse Fourier-Mukai transform of a limit tilt semistable object of nonzero fiber degree is a slope semistable torsion-free sheaf, up to modification in codimension 2.
In this paper we give an introduction to our recent work on characteristic classes of complex hypersurfaces based on some talks given at conferences in Strasbourg, Oberwolfach and Kagoshima. We explain the relation between nearby cycles for constructible functions or sheaves as well as for (relative) Grothendieck groups of algebraic varieties and mixed Hodge modules, and the specialization of characteristic classes of singular spaces like the Chern-, Todd-, Hirzebruch- and motivic Chern-classes. As an application we get a description of the differences between the corresponding virtual and fun…
Let g be a complex semisimple Lie algebra, and f : g --> g/G the adjoint quotient map. Springer theory of Weyl group representations can be seen as the study of the singularities of f. We give a generalization of Springer theory to visible, polar representations. It is a class of rational representations of complex reductive groups, for which the invariant theory works by analogy with the adjoint representations. Let G|V be such a representation, f : V --> V/G the quotient map, and P the sheaf of nearby cycles of f. We show that the Fourier transform of P is an intersection homology sheaf on V…
In this paper we establish Springer correspondence for the symmetric pair $(\mathrm{SL}(N),\mathrm{SO}(N))$ using Fourier transform, parabolic induction functor, and a nearby cycle sheaves construction due to Grinberg. As applications, we obtain results on cohomology of Hessenberg varieties and geometric constructions of irreducible representations of Hecke algebras of symmetric groups at $q=-1$.
