In the geometric situation of the simple Shimura varieties of Kottwitz studied in Harris and Taylor's book, we describe the monodromy filtration of the vanishing cycles complex and the spectral sequence associated to it. We prove in particular that this filtration coincides with the weight one up to shift. Thanks to the Berkovich-Fargues' theorem, we deduce the description of the local monodromy filtration of the Deligne-Carayol model. In application, we obtain the description of the local components of cohomological automorphic representations of certains unitary groups, a global Jacquet-Langlands correspondence between two such groups and a proof of the weight-monodromy conjecture for the cohomology of these Shimura varieties.
We show that there is a perverse sheaf on a fine moduli space of stable sheaves on a smooth projective Calabi-Yau 3-fold, which is locally the perverse sheaf of vanishing cycles for a local Chern-Simons functional, possibly after taking an etale Galois cover. This perverse sheaf lifts to a mixed Hodge module and gives us a cohomology theory which enables us to define the Gopakumar-Vafa invariants mathematically.
We prove a criterion for determining whether the normalization of a complex analytic space on which the constant sheaf is perverse is a rational homology manifold, using a perverse sheaf known as the multiple-point complex. This perverse sheaf is naturally associated to any "parameterized space", and has several interesting connections with the Milnor monodromy and mixed Hodge Modules.
We show that there is a natural perverse sheaf on the moduli space of semistable sheaves on a smooth projective Calabi-Yau 3-fold which is locally the perverse sheaf of vanishing cycles for a local Chern-Simons functional. This gives us a cohomology theory whose Euler numbers are Donaldson-Thomas invariants.
We define and study new filtrations called of stratification of a perverse sheaf on a scheme; beside the cases of the weight or monodromy filtrations, these filtrations are available whatever are the ring of coefficients. We illustrate these constructions in the geometric situation of the simple unitary Shimura varieties of Harris and Taylor's book for the perverse sheaves of Harris-Taylor and the complex of vanishing cycles, introduced and studied in my 2009 paper at inventiones. In the situation studied in loc. cit., we show how to use these filtrations to simplify the principal step of this…
It is shown that for a perverse sheaf $K$ on an abelian variety $X$ the integers $i$ for which the cohomology $H^i(X,K)$ does not vanish define an interval in the number line (under certain conditions on the field of definition of $K$)
A perverse schober is a categorification of a perverse sheaf proposed by Kapranov--Schechtman. In this paper, we construct examples of perverse schobers on the Riemann sphere, which categorify the intersection complexes of natural local systems arising from the mirror symmetry for Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces. The Orlov equivalence plays a key role for the construction.
We suggest a possibility for a categorical generalization of the concept of a perverse sheaf, in which vector spaces are replaced by triangulated categories. We call such hypothetical objects perverse Schobers and consider several examples, giving a natural but ad hoc definition in each case. In the simplest case (perverse sheaves on a disk with one possible singular point) we propose, as a categorical analog, the data of a spherical functor.
On an $n$-dimensional locally reduced complex analytic space $X$ on which the shifted constant sheaf $\Q_X^\bullet[n]$ is perverse, it is well-known that, locally, $\Q_X^\bullet[n]$ underlies a mixed Hodge module of weight $\leq n$ on $X$, with weight $n$ graded piece isomorphic to the intersection cohomology complex $\Idot_X$ with constant $\Q$ coefficients. In this paper, we identify the weight $n-1$ graded piece $\Gr_{n-1}^W \Q_X^\bullet[n]$ in the case where $X$ is a "parameterized space", using the comparison complex, a perverse sheaf naturally defined on any space for which the shifted c…
We prove a characteristic p analogue of a result of Massey which bounds the dimensions of the stalks of a perverse sheaf in terms of certain intersection multiplicities of the characteristic cycle of that sheaf. This uses the construction of the characteristic cycle of a perverse sheaf in characteristic p by Saito. We apply this to prove a conjecture of Shende and Tsimerman on the Betti numbers of the intersections of two translates of theta loci in a hyperelliptic Jacobian. This implies a function field analogue of the Michel-Venkatesh mixing conjecture about the equidistribution of CM points…
It was proved by Ginzburg and Mirkovic-Vilonen that the $G(O)$-equivariant perverse sheaves on the affine grassmannian of a connected reductive group $G$ form a tensor category equivalent to the tensor category of finite dimensional representations of the dual group $G^\vee$. The proof use the Tannakian formalism. The purpose of this paper is to construct explicitely the action of $G^\vee$ on the global cohomology of a perverse sheaf.
For a balanced wall crossing in geometric invariant theory, there exist derived equivalences between the corresponding GIT quotients if certain numerical conditions are satisfied. Given such a wall crossing, I construct a perverse sheaf of categories on a disk, singular at a point, with half-monodromies recovering these equivalences, and with behaviour at the singular point controlled by a GIT quotient stack associated to the wall. Taking complexified Grothendieck groups gives a perverse sheaf of vector spaces: I characterise when this is an intersection cohomology complex of a local system on…
Let (P,X) be Shimura data, M=M(P,X,K) the Shimura variety of level K. To an algebraic representation of P, one can associate a mixed sheaf (variation of Hodge structure, l-adic sheaf) on M. In the paper, we study the degeneration of such sheaves along strata in toroidal compactifications of M. The main result (2.8 in the Hodge setting, 3.9 in the l-adic setting) gives a formula for this degeneration in terms of Hochschild cohomology of certain unipotent subgroups of P. The new version differs from the earlier one in that the proof of 2.8 was rewritten. In particular, the effect of Saito's spec…
The method of intersection spaces associates rational Poincaré complexes to singular stratified spaces. For a conifold transition, the resulting cohomology theory yields the correct count of all present massless 3-branes in type IIB string theory, while intersection cohomology yields the correct count of massless 2-branes in type IIA theory. For complex projective hypersurfaces with an isolated singularity, we show that the cohomology of intersection spaces is the hypercohomology of a perverse sheaf, the intersection space complex, on the hypersurface. Moreover, the intersection space complex …
The convolution powers of a perverse sheaf on an abelian variety define an interesting family of branched local systems whose geometry is still poorly understood. We show that the generating series for their generic rank is a rational function of a very simple shape and that a similar result holds for the symmetric convolution powers. We also give formulae for other Schur functors in terms of characteristic classes on the dual abelian variety, and as an example we discuss the case of Prym-Tjurin varieties.
Informal lecture notes with examples on sheaf theory and the derived category of sheaves; sheaves and Morse theory; perverse sheaves, and some applications to representation theory. Added Oct 2021: cellular perverse sheaves. Proofs are outlined with references for further details.
We present a detailed introduction of the theory of constructible sheaf complexes in the complex algebraic and analytic setting. All concepts are illustrated by many interesting examples and relevant applications, while some important results are presented with complete proofs. This paper is intended as a broadly accessible user's guide to these topics, providing the readers with a taste of the subject, reflected by concrete examples and applications that motivate the general theory. We discuss the stability of constructible sheaf complexes under the standard functors, and explain the relation…
The purpose of this talk is to present an (apparently) new way to look at the intersection complex of a singular variety over a finite field, or, more generally, at the intermediate extension functor on pure perverse sheaves, and an application of this to the cohomology of noncompact Shimura varieties.
Given a birational modification $X \to Y$ of complex projective varieties with fiber dimension 1 and rational singularities, consider the main component of Bridgeland's moduli space $W \to Y$ of perverse point sheaves on $X/Y$. We give criteria for the normalization of $W$ to coincide with the transform (flip/flop) $X^+ \to Y$ of $X \to Y$. First, this holds if the exceptional loci of $X \to Y$ and $W \to Y$ have codimension $>1$. Second, if the ideal sheaf of $X \times_Y X^+$ is flat over $X^+$ then there is at least a morphism $X^+ \to W$. We illustrate the results using a number of examples…
For oriented $-1$-shifted symplectic derived Artin stacks, Ben-Bassat-Brav-Bussi-Joyce introduced certain perverse sheaves on them which can be regarded as sheaf theoretic categorifications of the Donaldson-Thomas invariants. In this paper, we prove that the hypercohomology of the above perverse sheaf on the $-1$-shifted cotangent stack over a quasi-smooth derived Artin stack is isomorphic to the Borel-Moore homology of the base stack up to a certain shift of degree. This is a global version of the dimensional reduction theorem due to Davison. We give two applications of our main theorem. Firs…
Let Y be a non-singular projective manifold with an ample canonical sheaf, and let V be a rational variation of Hodge structures of weight one on Y with Higgs bundle E(1,0) + E(0,1), coming from a family of Abelian varieties. If Y is a curve the Arakelov inequality says that the difference of the slope of E(1,0) and the one of E(0,1) is is smaller than or equal to the degree of the canonical sheaf. We prove a similar inequality in the higher dimensional case. If the latter is an equality, as well as the Bogomolov inequality for E(1,0) or for E(0,1), one hopes that Y is a Shimura variety, and V…
We describe an analogue of the notion of a perverse sheaf in the setting of the derived category of coherent sheaves on an algebraic stack. Under strong additional assumptions the construction of coherent "intersection cohomology" complexes works. This paper supersedes the preprint arXiv:math/0005152 by the second author.
We develop the theory of semi-orthogonal decompositions and spherical functors in the framework of stable $\infty$-categories. Building on this, we study the relative Waldhausen S-construction $S_\bullet(F)$ of a spherical functor $F$ and equip it with a natural paracyclic structure (``rotational symmetry''). This fulfills a part of the general program to provide a rigorous account of perverse schobers which are (thus far conjectural) categorifications of perverse sheaves. Namely, in terms of our previous identification of perverse sheaves on Riemann surfaces with Milnor sheaves, the relative …
This paper is a continuation of our paper math.AG/0006222. We study the reduction of certain PEL Shimura varieties with parahoric level structure at primes p at which the group that defines the Shimura variety ramifies. We describe "good" $p$-adic integral models of these Shimura varieties and study their 'etale local structure. In particular, we exhibit a stratification of their (singular) special fibers and give a partial calculation of the sheaf of nearby cycles.
We present a result which can be used for stratifications with conical singularities to deduce that a perverse sheaf (in particular, an intersection homology sheaf) has reducible characteristic variety, given a hypothesis on the monodromy of the vanishing cycles local system of a stratum. We apply it to explain most of the examples currently known where SS(IC(X)) is reducible for X a Schubert variety in a flag variety.
Let $X$ be a (smooth and complete) curve and $G$ a reductive group. In [BG] we introduced the object that we called "geometric Eisenstein series". This is a perverse sheaf $\bar{Eis}_E$ (or rather a complex of such) on the moduli stack $Bun_G(X)$ of principal $G$-bundles on $X$, which is attached to a local system $E$ on $X$ with respect to the torus $\check{T}$, Langlands dual to the Cartan subgroup $T\subset G$. In loc. cit. we showed that$\bar{Eis}_E$ corresponds to the $\check{G}$-local system induced from $E$, in the sense of the geometric Langlands correspondence. In the present paper we…
Given a Heegaard splitting of a three-manifold Y, we consider the SL(2,C) character variety of the Heegaard surface, and two complex Lagrangians associated to the handlebodies. We focus on the smooth open subset corresponding to irreducible representations. On that subset, the intersection of the Lagrangians is an oriented d-critical locus in the sense of Joyce. Bussi associates to such an intersection a perverse sheaf of vanishing cycles. We prove that in our setting, the perverse sheaf is an invariant of Y, i.e., it is independent of the Heegaard splitting. The hypercohomology of this sheaf …
Let $ S $ be the special fibre of the good reduction of a Shimura variety of Hodge type. By constructing adapted deformations for the associated $p$-divisible groups of $ S $, we manage to construct a morphism from $S$ to some quotient sheaf of the loop group associated with $S$. We show that the geometric fibres of this morphism give back the Ekedahl-Oort strata of $S$. For any geometric point $ x $ of $ S $, we give a deformation over $ W(k(x)) $ of the $ p $-divisible group associated with $ x $ by (non-canonically) constructing a Breuil-Kisin window (which corresponds to a $ p $-divisible …
Two major results in the theory of l-adic mixed constructible sheaves are the purity theorem (every simple perverse sheaf is pure) and the decomposition theorem (every pure object in the derived category is a direct sum of shifts of simple perverse sheaves). In this paper, we prove analogues of these results for coherent sheaves. Specificially, we work with staggered sheaves, which form the heart of a certain t-structure on the derived category of equivariant coherent sheaves. We prove, under some reasonable hypotheses, that every simple staggered sheaf is pure, and that every pure complex of …
For an odd prime p, we construct integral models over p for Shimura varieties with parahoric level structure, attached to Shimura data (G,X) of abelian type, such that G splits over a tamely ramified extension of Q_p. The local structure of these integral models is related to certain "local models", which are defined group theoretically. Under some additional assumptions, we show that these integral models satisfy a conjecture of Kottwitz which gives an explicit description for the trace of Frobenius action on their sheaf of nearby cycles.
This survey article discusses some results on the structure of families f:V-->U of n-dimensional manifolds over quasi-projective curves U, with semistable reduction over a compactification Y of U. We improve the Arakelov inequality for the direct images of powers of the dualizing sheaf. For families of Abelian varieties we recall the characterization of Shimura curves by Arakelov equalities. For families of curves we recall the characterization of Teichmueller curves in terms of the existence of certain sub variation of Hodge structures. We sketch the proof that the moduli scheme of curves of …
We use the Springer correspondence to give a partial characterization of the irreducible representations which appear in the Tymoczko dot-action of the Weyl group on the cohomology ring of a regular semisimple Hessenberg variety. In type A, we apply these techniques to prove that all irreducible summands which appear in the pushforward of the constant sheaf on the universal Hessenberg family have full support. We also observe that the recent results of Brosnan and Chow, which apply the local invariant cycle theorem to the family of regular Hessenberg varieties in type A, extend to arbitrary Li…
In this article, we study local models associated to certain Shimura varieties. In particular, we present a resoultion of their singularities. As a consequence, we are able to determine the alternating semisimple trace of the geometric Frobenius on the sheaf of nearby cycles.
For any Shimura variety of Hodge type with hyperspecial level at a prime $p$ and automorphic lisse sheaf on it, we prove a formula, conjectured by Kottwitz \cite{Kottwitz90}, for the Lefschetz numbers of Frobenius-twisted Hecke correspondences acting on the compactly supported étale cohomology. Our proof is an adaptation of the arguments of Langlands and Rapoport \cite{LR87} of deriving the Kottwitz's formula from their conjectural description of the set of mod-$p$ points of Shimura variety (Langlands-Rapoport conjecture), which replaces their Galois gerb theoretic arguments by more geometric …
We the study of the monodromy of local systems with bounded ramification on a punctured disc defined over a non-archimedean valued field of characteristic zero. First, we construct the local Fourier transforms and we establish their main properties. Also, we show that the Fourier transform of a "perverse sheaf" with bounded ramification on the affine line, is again a "perverse sheaf" with bounded ramification (we put that in quotes, because actually the language of perversity is not used). These foundations are then used to exhibit a natural break decomposition for local systems with bounded r…
Using the theory of perverse sheaves of vanishing cycles, we define a homological invariant of knots in three-manifolds, similar to the three-manifold invariant constructed by Abouzaid and the second author. We use spaces of SL(2,C) flat connections with fixed holonomy around the meridian of the knot. Thus, our invariant is a sheaf-theoretic SL(2,C) analogue of the singular knot instanton homology of Kronheimer and Mrowka. We prove that for two-bridge and torus knots, the SL(2,C) invariant is determined by the l-degree of the $\widehat{A}$-polynomial. However, this is not true in general, as c…
The purpose of this paper is to introduce and study certain irreducible perverse l-adic sheaves on a reductive group G over a finite field (we call them gamma-sheaves). One can construct such a sheaf starting with (almost) every finite-dimensional representation of the Langlands dual group. We present conjecture connecting the above sheaves with generalized gamma-functions introduced in our previous paper. We also conjecture that the convolution functor with the above sheaves enjoys certain nice properties (in particular, we compute the convolution of a gamma-sheaf with a character sheaf). We …

V.Berkovich, K.Fujiwara and R.Huber have proved independently by different methods that the fiber of the vanishing cycles at a point of the special fiber depends only on the formal completion at this point. We refine this result and prove the invariance under formal completion of the perverse monodromy filtration on the fiber of vanishing cycles. This result is used in an essential way by P.Boyer in his work on some "simple Shimura varieties".
In this article we study the perverse sheaf on Drinfeld's compactification obtained by applying the geometric Jacquet functor (alias nearby cycles) to a nondegenerate Whittaker sheaf. Namely, we describe its restrictions along the defect stratification in terms of the Langlands dual Lie algebra, in particular showing that this nearby cycles sheaf is tilting. We also describe the subquotients of the monodromy filtration using the Picard-Lefschetz oscillators introduced by S. Schieder, including a proof that the subquotients are semisimple without reference to any theory of weights. This argumen…
